Madeleine McCann: Clarence Mitchell Speaks, Make Madeleine History And Breastfeeding
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY MAIL pages 10 and 11: “Madeleine cried for 18 hours a day. Kate tells of the special bond forged in the painful days of early childhood.”
Kate McCann is speaking with Portuguese magazine Flash!. This interview took place before Kate McCann was named as a suspect in Madeline’s disappearance. Kate says the first six months with Madeleine were “very difficult”. Madeleine had colic. “I had to carry her around permanently,” says Kate.
What does it mean, this interview that has “emerged”? That what you tell magazines can be taken out of context and used in evidence against you, or something else?
THE TIMES page 9: “McCanns go straight to the top in search for powerful backers.”
Gordon Brown is being kept abreast of the investigation on Kate and Gerry McCann, possibly by reading the British press and watching the news bulletins.
(Is any MP still wearing a yellow ribbon?)
The McCanns have a new spokesman. He’s called Clarence Mitchell. He resigned as head of the Government’s Media Monitoring unit to take this new post.
Mr Mitchell once offered: “There’s a whole level of debate taking place online which simply didn’t exist before and departments feel they need to be fully engaged in that.”
Look out for Kate’s blog.
DAILY MIRROR front page: “THE TIDE TURNS.”
“McCanns WON’T be ordered back to Portugal says Judge”
“Gordon Brown briefed on the case”
“New spokesman will declare Gerry and Kate innocent today”
Clarence Mitchell says: “They have nothing whatever to do with Madeleine’s disappearance.” And as the McCann’s new spokesman he should know.
Pages 4 and 5: “RAY OF HOPE.”
Madeleine has not been found but Kate and Gerry McCann will not have to fly back to Portugal for more questioning.
On the downside sales of the “Look for Madeleine” wristband are not going well in Portugal. In “LOCALS REJECTS ‘FIND HER’ BRACELETS,” this year’s Make Poverty History band is being turned down at a car boot sales in Praia da Luz.
Says one ex-pat: “It’s as if they want to forget something so horrible happened.” Or buy something less with their money?
Says another: “We can’t understand how they can carry on jogging after losing Madeleine. Gerry went to a hairdressers a few weeks after she disappeared and continued tennis lessons. The Portuguese feel they should b hysterical.” But not the British, who understand reserve…
THE SUN front page: “MADDIE COPS SLAPPED DOWN. KATE BACKED BY JUDGE. Mum won’t be hauled back to Portugal.”
Judge Pedro Anjos Frias rejected Portuguese police calls for the McCanns to return. “He is thought to have ruled the case to flimsy to justify the move.” Or, to put it another way, he has not received sufficient evidence to be convinced of the need for a trial.
Pages 4 and 5: “COPS CASE COLLAPSING.”
And: “McCanns tell Brown: We have solid defence.” Gordon Brown’s reaction to this news is not known.
THE INDEPENDENT page 32: Thomas Sutcliffe says the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has been “yoked by journalists to another kind of story – the primal faction of fairytale”. Here “the beautiful child is swallowed by something that has emerged from the dark”.
It is, is it not, every child’s worst nightmare.
Page 4: “Kate McCann ‘will not be reinterviewed in Portugal’.”
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE POLICE CASE FALLS APART.”
“Judge refuses to recall the McCanns”
“Impossible to detect sedatives in hair”
“But slurs against the parents continue”
Slurs?
Pages 8 and 9: “My struggles to control Madeleine – BY KATE MCCANN.”
As told to Flash! magazine. The twins arrive. “The worst thing is that she started to demand lots of attention, especially when I was breastfeeding them.”
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE ALL SEVEN McCANN PALS IN FRAME.” The seven dwarves, to continue Mr Sutcliffe’s analogy?
“Cops set to name them as suspects.”
Pages 6 and 7: “BRIT PALS ALL SUSPECTS.”
The Tapas 9 are in the frame. This will put the lid – the tapas – on the case. Right?
“Maddie cops jet to UK as group face grilling” – Portuguese police are “planning” to come to the UK to continue the investigation. British police will conduct interviews.
DAILY TELEGRAPH page 8: “McCanns to be interviewed by British police.”
Kate and Gerry are also keen to reach Gordon Brown. A source tell the paper: “The McCanns do not expect help or influence to be exerted on their behalf but want to get messages to the very top that they are innocent.”
Does Brown read the Telegraph?
THE GUARDIAN page 35: “Never mind the high street: Branson sells his Virgin Megastores.”
No mention of Madeleine McCann, granted, but this news one day after Branson pledged to help the parents clear their names looks like interesting timing?

do you think kate is good looking.
September 18th, 2007 at 5:04 pm
It may be 50 yards as the crow flies or as there is a pool in the way as the penguin swims but you can add on twice that distance walking around the perimeter. The apartment would be visible but then it is quite tall -unfortunately the McCanns occupied the ground floor with hedges, walls and trees obscuring the view. And it was night-time -unless of course they have night vision technology to hand.

Ah…Nottingham. I spent a lot of my youth there watching Nottm Forest during the Cloughie era. I’ve got fond memories of there and still miss the occasional gig at Rock City.
I went back to Mablethorpe as well and it should be in the Guiness Book of Records as the female tattoo capital of the world. It is a dump but the beach was reasonably good on what was a very hot day when I was there.

This whole McC story is an international phenomenon - with a middle-class, white British couple at the centre (let’s face it - this has had little to do with Madeleine for ages and all to do with KM and GM).
I wonder if the likes of Clarence Mitchell, Gordon Brown, Richard Branson, Sky News, Daily Mail etc. etc. etc. would be putting all this emphasis on portraying the McCanns in a completely favourable light if they had been holidaying in, say, Blackpool and the British police were trying to sort out all the conflicting stories from the Tappas9?
It seems to me (as a non-Brit) that the reason the McCann’s PR machine has succeeded so well in deflecting attention from the miriad of anomalies in the McCann’s story and their strange behaviour is because the ‘enemy/baddy/boogey man’ is being portrayed as the PJ and not British Police.
Would these ‘guilty of neglect’ parents really be given this preferencial and deferential treatment if this had all happened in the UK?

The Northern Rock story has ruined the Maccan story.

If you think the Times don’t like you having your say, try getting an entry on the findmadeleine site. Unless you want to lick the arses of the McCann family, you won’t be joining that club either.

I meant to add…the distance from Tapas Bar to Apartment is analogous to saying “I ran someone over with my car and killed them…” only to have people speculate on the speed involved. I wish people would stop discussion on the absolute distance or anything to do with that aspect. It really is irrelevant.

600 ~ Stevo … nottingham born and bred but not lived there for over 25yrs… went back to mablethorpe for a ~ george orwell - coming up for air moment last year…we had a fantastic time and loved every minute there…. even the kids were with us [all the time] but you know what … george orwell was right when you go back it’s never the same….. as a kid we thought mablethorpe was the bee knees [do bees have knees i wonder] but now as a grown up…. it’s a shit hole……. but the beach is one of the best in the uk
September 18th, 2007 at 4:56 pm
the times certainly dont like me ‘having my say’ on their website.

Yep, we’ve all seen the aerial pictures hundreds of times but isn’t the point that the kids were left alone? I get sick of reading about the actual distance involved from the bar to the apartment. Who cares whether it was 50ft or 500 yards?
The kids were left alone. That’s all that matters and distance has no relevance.

597 Feel free, I might be able to get them franked by the works machine so postage would be cheap (for me!)

It was funny because I was in the UK about a month ago and a place in Skeggy burned down. I felt it was because the year has been bad for business with all the rain etc. A typical insurance claim job no doubt!
Do you live in Lincolnshire or Yorkshire or Derbyshire? Aren’t they the three counties where it’s mandatory to visit Skegness or Mablethorpe?
September 18th, 2007 at 4:48 pm
594 ~ Well stevo thats because you and i are from the same mould and same era btw… loved the reference to skegness …we were piss poor and could never afford to stay at skeggy….we went to mable thorpe every year….. and no we were never left on our own… our parents… [to quote a well known song] “didn’t forget about us”
September 18th, 2007 at 4:47 pm
Here’s some more from Garth…on the McCann’s negligence.
Less offensive but quite funny:

I couldn’t even get my head around leaving my kids for any amount of time like your challenge. I don’t need any time to think about trying it because it couldn’t happen. Not for me.
Your challenge is a good one though. Unfortunately some parents do seem to believe that they would do the same as Kate and Gerry. I remember reading in other forums where people would write drivel such as “we’ve all left our kids under similar circumstances and it could happen to any of us…”
September 18th, 2007 at 4:43 pm
Bludger asked earlier about other nights. Skeletor admitted in an interview that was in The Sun that she had left them since the start of the holiday, they all had, as “everyone did it” .
Impressed, I will pass, my 2 babies are too precious to me I’m afraid.
September 18th, 2007 at 4:41 pm
591 ~ SSS oh yes please…. not only are you I and stevo in a 3some but you’ll cook for us as well….. and with hubby ironing… it’s like i’ve died and gone to heaven….
