Madeleine McCann: Clarence Mitchell Speaks, Make Madeleine History And Breastfeeding
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY MAIL pages 10 and 11: “Madeleine cried for 18 hours a day. Kate tells of the special bond forged in the painful days of early childhood.”
Kate McCann is speaking with Portuguese magazine Flash!. This interview took place before Kate McCann was named as a suspect in Madeline’s disappearance. Kate says the first six months with Madeleine were “very difficult”. Madeleine had colic. “I had to carry her around permanently,” says Kate.
What does it mean, this interview that has “emerged”? That what you tell magazines can be taken out of context and used in evidence against you, or something else?
THE TIMES page 9: “McCanns go straight to the top in search for powerful backers.”
Gordon Brown is being kept abreast of the investigation on Kate and Gerry McCann, possibly by reading the British press and watching the news bulletins.
(Is any MP still wearing a yellow ribbon?)
The McCanns have a new spokesman. He’s called Clarence Mitchell. He resigned as head of the Government’s Media Monitoring unit to take this new post.
Mr Mitchell once offered: “There’s a whole level of debate taking place online which simply didn’t exist before and departments feel they need to be fully engaged in that.”
Look out for Kate’s blog.
DAILY MIRROR front page: “THE TIDE TURNS.”
“McCanns WON’T be ordered back to Portugal says Judge”
“Gordon Brown briefed on the case”
“New spokesman will declare Gerry and Kate innocent today”
Clarence Mitchell says: “They have nothing whatever to do with Madeleine’s disappearance.” And as the McCann’s new spokesman he should know.
Pages 4 and 5: “RAY OF HOPE.”
Madeleine has not been found but Kate and Gerry McCann will not have to fly back to Portugal for more questioning.
On the downside sales of the “Look for Madeleine” wristband are not going well in Portugal. In “LOCALS REJECTS ‘FIND HER’ BRACELETS,” this year’s Make Poverty History band is being turned down at a car boot sales in Praia da Luz.
Says one ex-pat: “It’s as if they want to forget something so horrible happened.” Or buy something less with their money?
Says another: “We can’t understand how they can carry on jogging after losing Madeleine. Gerry went to a hairdressers a few weeks after she disappeared and continued tennis lessons. The Portuguese feel they should b hysterical.” But not the British, who understand reserve…
THE SUN front page: “MADDIE COPS SLAPPED DOWN. KATE BACKED BY JUDGE. Mum won’t be hauled back to Portugal.”
Judge Pedro Anjos Frias rejected Portuguese police calls for the McCanns to return. “He is thought to have ruled the case to flimsy to justify the move.” Or, to put it another way, he has not received sufficient evidence to be convinced of the need for a trial.
Pages 4 and 5: “COPS CASE COLLAPSING.”
And: “McCanns tell Brown: We have solid defence.” Gordon Brown’s reaction to this news is not known.
THE INDEPENDENT page 32: Thomas Sutcliffe says the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has been “yoked by journalists to another kind of story – the primal faction of fairytale”. Here “the beautiful child is swallowed by something that has emerged from the dark”.
It is, is it not, every child’s worst nightmare.
Page 4: “Kate McCann ‘will not be reinterviewed in Portugal’.”
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE POLICE CASE FALLS APART.”
“Judge refuses to recall the McCanns”
“Impossible to detect sedatives in hair”
“But slurs against the parents continue”
Slurs?
Pages 8 and 9: “My struggles to control Madeleine – BY KATE MCCANN.”
As told to Flash! magazine. The twins arrive. “The worst thing is that she started to demand lots of attention, especially when I was breastfeeding them.”
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE ALL SEVEN McCANN PALS IN FRAME.” The seven dwarves, to continue Mr Sutcliffe’s analogy?
“Cops set to name them as suspects.”
Pages 6 and 7: “BRIT PALS ALL SUSPECTS.”
The Tapas 9 are in the frame. This will put the lid – the tapas – on the case. Right?
“Maddie cops jet to UK as group face grilling” – Portuguese police are “planning” to come to the UK to continue the investigation. British police will conduct interviews.
DAILY TELEGRAPH page 8: “McCanns to be interviewed by British police.”
Kate and Gerry are also keen to reach Gordon Brown. A source tell the paper: “The McCanns do not expect help or influence to be exerted on their behalf but want to get messages to the very top that they are innocent.”
Does Brown read the Telegraph?
THE GUARDIAN page 35: “Never mind the high street: Branson sells his Virgin Megastores.”
No mention of Madeleine McCann, granted, but this news one day after Branson pledged to help the parents clear their names looks like interesting timing?

73… Rest, yeah your right I was just thinking out aloud, I cant imagine she would be, I would like to think she is being looked after safely and not being abused or worse, it seems so unfair that the parents are sitting on a huge nest egg that they are planning to spend on goodness knows what next, and then they openly go to the park the zoo the play school, while poor little maddie is …well who knows where,

77 I am the wrong colour to be a neo nazi or fascist (aren’t they mainly white?). Skinhead ‘do’s don’t suit me and I don’t look good in bovver boots!! I don’t believe in conspiracy theories either!

62 ~ Moderation…. unfortunately the reason why that has no real meaning is because on this case [probably more than any] we gravitate to the places where i sympathies most lie… so the votes have no basis of fact, they are based on hunches and if 80% think not guilty then in that forum they will have the greater voice than the guilty hang em high mob…. hey oh…. like life itself

76 How can you respect someone you don’t trust? Scepticism is distrust.

68. It is possible that the split of innocence and guilty belief in the McCanns is not uniform across the class spectrum.
I would suspect that psychologically the more affluent would like to believe that the “civilised” (of which they are part) are incapable of such acts of barbarity, unlike the great unwashed who are unable to control their primitive urges.

75 Apparently she left the twins with the neighbour in the next door apartment. Or rather, the neighbour came into the apartment, as even though Skeletor was hysterical, the (un)sedated twins never woke up, but the woman next door heard her screaming and went running. She offered to immediately call the PJ but Skelly said no, and went back to get the Tapas 9.
71 Deceived by whom? How odd.

Maybe none of us can understand how all this mess has come about with the investigation ,I will say one thing and that is something is amiss with the parents, all the parents I know who I have spoken with have all said the same where is the compassion in these people, why did they find it more important to start a campaign for money, write a daily blog,go jogging, see the pope ..the list goes on and on.There is nothing about thier actions in my mind that shows me a caring loving parent but plenty to show how to make money out of the totaly unthinkable loss of a small defencless child. They should be ashamed of themselfs and instead of keep criticising the police for scandaling thier name they should practice what they preach and get back to finding out what has happened to thier daughter.

60 the discussion turned to Hitler….
I wonder if that will end up in the media…thereby “proving” that these boards are full of conspiracy theorists and Neo Nazis….

74 - SSS, respecting police and remaining sceptical of them can peacefully coexist, no problem there.
Unfortunately, anyone who is in a position of power is also in a position to abuse it.

The twins should be on a social services at risk register. They were left every evening whilst their parents wined and dined. When Kate went back to the apartment and apparently noticed madeliene had gone, she left the twins again… this is not normal.
If Kate suspected someone had taken Madeliene didn’t it occur to her that they might be hiding and come back for the twins? A normal person would not have left them again - you would drag them out of bed or stay there and scream and raise the alarm.
How these children slept through the party of people afterwards, with lights going on and off is also abnormal.

66 This is where we differ in our opinion. My dealings with the police up until now have consisted of reporting a policeman who I thought was derelict in his duty by ignoring a man who was kerb crawling. I have brought my children up to respect the police as I think that perhaps the majority do a good job and it is the few crooked/corrupt/incompetent ones who spoil it for the good/decent majority.
Perhaps you have had more dealings with them, I don’t know, but I can only go by my own experiences.
I have heard that 90% of prisoners claim to be innocent, so perhaps there is something in this remaining silent thing, I don’t know!

69 - the sad thing, Toni, is that wherever Madeleine is, I don’t think she’s happy
September 18th, 2007 at 9:52 am
60 ~ SSS… it appeared that there were some staunch defenders of the faith….. and there were 1 or 2 isolated posters….who made their pro mccann post then left… but they were not the usual ill informed dimwits…by late evening [maybe it was the booze talking - or possibly sleep deprivation] the debate degenerated into the politics of hitler…. [don't mention the war...i did once but i think i got away with it...]
However there was an interesting post about No Stone unturned….
If any of you are bored..then google it….but take your time you need to be lloking at sites like amazon et al….. how ironic that the mccann mantra is … NO stone unturned….. as the poster last night said….
Are the Mccanns seriously taking the piss !!!
September 18th, 2007 at 9:51 am
thought this was a bit of an odd statement
Thanking the family’s supporters for their messages of support, he added: “It means so much to us to know that so many people have not been deceived.” GM

- the link to the independent page doesn’t need “www”
so just cut and paste this news.independent.co.uk/uk/crime/article2836182.ece
next to the forward slashes after http in your address bar
I couldn’t post the whole address as it got caught up in the spam filter - why - everyone else is allowed to post links!
It’s not fair!
September 18th, 2007 at 9:49 am
wow, went to make a cup of rooibos and when I look in again there is a whole toilet roll full of comments
well I have come to the conclusion that the maccanns are from another planet and Maddie has lost them, she is happy on her planet and we are left with these 2 and their 2 mini clones, how else do you explain there odd behaviour and the odd ppl they call their families,
got a new name for anutie Phil - rent a tent
September 18th, 2007 at 9:49 am
62 Seymour Laws was saying a similar thing yesterday. He felt that “chavs” were more likely to think that Teflon 2 guilty than those who are not “chavs”. This was apparently based on an informal grilling, sorry polling, of people he knew.

Maybe a poll should be constructed along these lines:
Will Madeleine ever be seen again? Yes/No
Will her abductors/ killers ever be brought to justice? Yes/No
September 18th, 2007 at 9:47 am
Wow, SSS, I never said your opinion was *wrong*
All I’m saying is I’m sure many of us here could imagine a situation where choosing to say nothing at all when being interrogated is in your best interest, regardless of guilt or innocence. I never said one should lie. It is every citizen’s duty to remain sceptical of the police.
By the way, I’m sure she likely answered the question “did you kill her?”

is there a link to it?

45. I suspect you are correct. Nobody likes admitting they were duped by anyone, and they do not, moreover, like to admit to being wrong.
Once somebody has made their mind up they will eschew with all logic and distort all evidence to delude themselves into proving their belief. The problem: People think it is a sign of strength to solidly maintain a view.
September 18th, 2007 at 9:43 am
A vote taken on the three private yahoo forums I’m on put it at over 80% think they are innocent. (Professional forums)
so it depends on where you go to get the figures!
September 18th, 2007 at 9:42 am
It is interesting that the Daily Mail is recycling the ‘Madeleine cried for 18 hours a day’ interview with KMcC from Flash magazine.
I read this on 5th August in the Independent. In the Independent version she also uses the phrase “catches me” and “caught me” and “shocking” in regard to her daughter’s bedroom.
Interesting if you are into analysis of language. If not, you can ignore that.
September 18th, 2007 at 9:42 am
55 What happened last night impressed?
September 18th, 2007 at 9:41 am
thanks firestar, LOL! I needed a little help
September 18th, 2007 at 9:41 am
How come if anyone goes against the ‘party line’ then they are Team McCann?
Is this strictly anti-McCann? Not!
What happened to freedom of speech for all?
September 18th, 2007 at 9:41 am
loved it when the reporter on GMTV called them the Tappas9 made my day
September 18th, 2007 at 9:40 am
51 I wonder why she said that? Hmm…………
Luckily, I have never been in the position where the police have interrogated me. Well, maybe not LUCKILY, I am not in the habit of breaking the law. I just think that surely telling the truth is the best thing if you are innocent, that is all. This is my opinion, which Rest seems to think is wrong. I am not sure how he can say an opinion is wrong, as after all it is an opinion and therefore neither right nor wrong. It just is.
