Madeleine McCann: Missing Hours, Found Again And A PR Disaster
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
THE SUN front page: “MADDIE DAD AGONY. Fiend hid from Gerry. He was already in room he tells cops.”
A source close to the family says: “When Gerry went to check on Madeleine at 9.05pm he realised the bedroom door was open. Gerry is firmly of the view the abductor was already in the apartment.”
It’s another theory.
“When he went in he saw Madeleine was asleep but the bedroom door was slightly open. He thought, ‘That’s odd’ because he had left it firmly closed. But all the children were asleep. So he just went in and closed the door again and came out about 9.10pm.”
Good to hear Gerry McCann joining in the mood of speculation?
“Gerry is convinced the man must have been hiding, and once Gerry went through the patio doors the only way out was through the window. The front door was locked so the kidnapper took Madeleine and climbed out the window.”
DAILY MIRROR front page: “HOW SHE WAS TAKEN. The McCanns’ story.”
“Stolen to order after being spied on for days
Abductor hid in flat as Gerry looked in on kids
He got in through patio doors and out by window”
Gerry is a “heart specialist”.
Says a source: “When Gerry leaves, the man realises he has only a few minutes. He thinks the only way to get out without being seen is through the window.”
And: “Initially he thought Madeleine might have got up and gone to the toilet, or to get a drink or something.”
So what has changed? Why a new theory now, with a new spokesman on hand and the McCanns named as suspects?
DAILY STAR front page: “SEVEN HOURS TO KLILL MADDIE. Police probe her ‘lost’ final afternoon”
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE: THE MISSING SEVEN HOURS.”
Police sources reveal that “despite exhaustive inquiries they cannot confirm the whereabouts of part-time GP Kate, 39, and her daughter after 1.29pm on May 3”. A source said Kate’s movements were “unaccounted for until she sat down to have dinner with friends at a tapas restaurant within their holiday complex at around 8.40pm”.
The last photograph of Madeleine was said to have been taken by Kate at 2.29pm on May 3.
DAILY MAIL: “McCanns: What we really did in the missing six hours.”
“Madeleine had high tea at 5.30pm with staff at the Kids Club. She was picked up shortly before 6pm by Kate and Gerry.”
The friend insisted: “Kate was never alone with Madeleine that afternoon. There were always other witnesses present. These details were all given to detectives during police interviews, so they know what Kate and Gerry said happened that day.”
So no missing hours, then?
THE TIMES front page: “MADELEINE McCANN: Matthew Parris laments a PR disaster.
“The fatal flaw of David Cameron and Kate and Gerry McCann” - Our correspondent looks at the baleful influence of the marketing men.
“Look what they’ve done to Kate and Gerry McCann. Here were two people deserving of the most intense public sympathy. On a superficial level they got it – by the media bucketload. Yet did you not sense from an early stage an undertone of irritation at the couple? I’ve sensed it everywhere I go: not a sign of doubt about their innocence, which most of us take for granted, but a feeling, nevertheless, that they in some way invited trouble – though we banish the thought as brutal and wrong.
“Which it is. So why the ungenerosity? I believe it is because Kate and Gerry McCann have allowed an impression to arise that they and their advisers are marketing their own tragedy. Where we would have expected to see parents distracted and disorganised by grief, we have seen a professionally run campaign to find out what the media want, and give it to them.
“This has been done for a most defensible reason: to enlist the entire European public as amateur detectives in the search for Madeleine. But now her parents have ended up looking like film stars in a Hollywood weepy.”
“Put up or shut up, Madeleine McCann police told” - Friend of McCanns counters claims of ‘lost’ six hours before girl vanished
DAILY TELEGRPAH: “Madeleine McCann: Gerry certain he was in bedroom with kidnapper”
THE GUARDIAN: “From prime suspects to hounded victims - how parents turned the media tide”

Brandon - are you really a Catholic mum?
…because I’ve been struck that for a couple of female Catholic posters here - two of the very few who just can’t bring themselves to believe that KM could possibly have done anything worse than criminal negligence, if that - their ‘belief’ in KM (and GM) really does seem to be something like faith. And sometimes, to me, a rather blind faith.
And - maybe it’s totally unrelated - but two of the few people today who ‘can’t believe’ the worst of the McCanns, have possibly Catholic female names, Maria and Fiona (the first more possibly than the second).
I’ve also seen stuff in the media about the ‘Catholic community’ supporting ‘our Kate and Gerry’.
As, perhaps, an ‘insider’, have you noticed any sort of ‘bonding’ in the Catholic community over this case? And how important do you think the ‘Catholic’ angle - bible (at II Samuel 12), Pope, seaside church &c is in all this, both to the McCanns and the ‘Catholic community’?

safe now we all gone to bed?!!!!!!!!!

None of you people have any evidence either way.
I have been reading this website for about a week and a half and to be honest I feel cheapened by the whole experience. Theory after theory has been put out with absolutely nothing supporting any of them other than supposition.
i thought that a journalist might be using this sight to release information, but it seems that all that is here is uninformed mob comment.
I think its disgusting that you people consistently come up with conspiracy theories about the McCanns which are based on no evidence (ie ‘evidence’ as concieved by a court of law rather than your circumstantial evidence). Guilty or not, you people commenting on this site are basically car crash watchers. You are also probably predjudicing the course of any real trial which might arise,
In the middle ages you would have been the first at the witch trials.
I bet you’ve all been taking money out of your Northern Rock accounts as well.

Something pretty close to that certainly seems the best-fit/most-likely to me, too, Brandon.
Still big questions, but hey - it’s early days yet.
Unfortunately I think strong commercial/political forces are protecting them (maybe just to avoid the embarassment of having been publically duped), and therefore there may never be any charges of any sort.
My one hope of a proper and honest investigation to reach the truth (whatever it is) is that the Portuguese people are becoming angered, and will insist on it all being done properly, ignoring the spin of the frightful PR machine.

Wow, after reading through 887 posts I realize I didn’t know what dizzy was until now. I am learning a lot, yes. The links are interesting too.

I take whatever flight is cheapest. Charter, low-cost, schedule or whatever. I’ve seen loads of people using cellphones when boarding so it’s not unusual is all I’m saying. Their video from their phone was done while walking along the tarmac before boarding so wasn’t filmed on the plane.
September 23rd, 2007 at 1:52 am
speaking as a catholic mother of 4 shes depressed, self medicating herself and kids, goes wrong, cover up made to feel better ( not your fault, accident, gods way, no one will believe it, what about twins, do it this way, its only way, trust me im a doctor, )
Then all her responses fit
Maddie “taken”, alive (in heaven), she ’s lovelly, bring her back to us (judgement day) campaign is a penance or was supposed to be for forgiveness
i.e kate to quit job as gp to work for missing kids
popes, churches etc….. seeking forgiveness
where is that priest?
September 23rd, 2007 at 1:45 am
im sure if you change the questions to
” your decision on 3 may afternoon do you feel the right choice ( as in cover up death )”

leaving it to t an ob and gm to cover up

I dunno, it just disgusts me.
To actually say it felt “so right“ to leave three such little children out of earshot (and thus without any adult help) for stretches of 30 minutes.
To go drinking.
She did say it, in a TV interview I saw.
What an appalling person.
In my opinion.
Doesn’t prove she’s guilty of anything more, but is it surprising if people lose faith in her as the evidence builds up - even if it’s not official.

The stuff I am referring to was news footage of the McCanns in the resort, going to church etc. There were no interviews. The material you refer to is way older than the stuff I’m talking about.

Maybe the Mccanns work for a major toy manufacturers and it’s all a ploy to get the latest craze Cuddle Cat toy in the shops for Xmas - the swines !
September 23rd, 2007 at 1:29 am
Yes, Stig, but you see that article makes exactly my point.
“I feel desperately sorry to her that we weren’t there,”
“But it did feel safe and so right. ”
“I love her and I’m a totally responsible parent and that’s the only thing that keeps me going”
“Kate, 38, reveals how she is haunted by the unbearable regret that she wasn’t there to protect her daughter.”
Its the same strange words again that I saw in interview, when she said she regrets that she wasn’t there “at that moment”.
Like a dentists appointment.
To say it felt “so right” to leave the children - that she is a “totally responsible parent”
To regret her absence at the moment of abduction, as though it was something inevitable that would have happened regardless.
Absolutely no recognition that it would not have happened at all but for the neglect, no acceptance of responsibility, no recognition of wrongdoing.
Frankly, it’s bizarre. Either it’s mild mental illness, or she is guilty of something worse, or she is taking legal advice to be very careful what she admits. Maybe they thought the worst threat against them at that time was a child neglect case.
Either way, it kills any empathy I might have managed.
So sorry, Stig. You just made exactly my point. No proper regret - no acceptance of responsibility.

Wonder if this guy is a “Stone Cutter” and why he feels “compelled” to help the McCanns but hasn’t previously felt compelled to help other families with missing children or people who are merely suspects, and haven’t yet, and don’t know if they will be, charged with anything so shouldn’t know yet whether they will need expensive lawyers?

i’m off to bed and going to think of ways to end my addiction to this site as i’m becoming increasingly concerned that i might get bumped off if i get too close to the truth about GM COMARE GB et al. If i’m not seen again wouldn’t bother with the police as i’m sure they are in on it too. lol
September 23rd, 2007 at 1:11 am
It is interesting that the new team seems to be trying to pick off the objections of the “commentariat” (forums, bloggers, us etc) one by one, one per day.
Maybe tomorrow they’ll have the McCanns express for the first time regret and contrition for the actual unacceptable child neglect. Be a bit late, but it might wash with some.
In fact, if we want to play predictions, that’s mine for tomorrow. A belated admission that the child neglect was wrong. Though of course pretending that it’s just a repeat of what they’ve said before, when in fact it’s entirely new.
