Madeleine McCann: Blonde Child Seen In Morocco
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY MAIL front page: “Could this be Maddie?”
Readers see a picture of a child being carried on a woman’s back - “The intriguing picture being probed by Interpol.”
Pages 10 and 11: “Could this really be Maddie?”
This is the picture of a girl “in the clutches of a group of Moroccans”. The picture was taken four weeks ago near Tangiers by Spaniard Clara Torres.
DAILY MIRROR front page: “MADDY IN MOROCCO?”
Readers see the same picture. The Full “astonishing story” is on pages 4 and 5.
Pages 4 and 5: “COULD IT BE?” Less the full story than another question.
“GERRY: I KNOW WE WILL BE CLEARED” – Gerry McCann says he and his wife “wanted to be eliminated from the enquiry as quickly as possible”. Some news.
THE SUN front page: “MOROCCO PHOTO SENSATION. IS THIS MADDIE?”
The picture is “sensational”. It has been described as “convincing”, but by whom is not said.
Pages 4 and 5: “GERRY & KATE: IT COULD BE HER – MADDIE PARENTS HOPE AT SIGHTING SENSATION.”
Clara Torres is talking on Spanish radio. She looks at the photo. Says she: “It sent shivers down my spine.”
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “NOW A ‘PHOTO’ OF MADELEINE IN MOROCCO.”
‘Photo’ is placed in quotes lest readers mistake the picture for a ‘SNAP’ or a ‘SHOT’.
Spanish Government official Jose Herrero Arcas says: “The National Police received a photograph by email taken by a young Spanish couple who believe it shows Madeleine McCann. The quality of the photograph is not very clear and it was taken from around 200 metres away. However, the National Police are taking the claim seriously enough to have sent it on to their colleagues at Interpol. I cannot give any more information than that.”
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE – AMAZING PHOTO IN MOROCCO.”
Pages 4 and 5: “MADDIE SEEN IN MOROCCO – Bombshell new photo is probed by Interpol.”
THE TIMES front page: “Police start investigation into ‘picture in Morocco of Madeleine McCann’.”
Page 5: “New photograph shows child like Madeleine on African woman’s back.”
A source close to the McCanns tells one and all: “The McCanns are not going to get their hopes up until the photograph has been sent for forensic examination.” And, dare it be said, a DNA test.
DAILY TELEGRAPH front page: “Is this Madeleine in Morocco?” The search for the missing child has taken a “dramatic turn”.
Page 9: “Gerry McCann is “confident” he and his wife will be cleared. A source tells us: “It is very unlikely that British police would question the McCanns on behalf of the Portuguese now.”
Robert Murat responds to claims by nanny Charlotte Pennington that on the night of Madeleine’s disappearance he was by the McCann family apartment: “I certainly was not there that night. At no point was I there.”

You’d expect them to react in a violent way or at least try to hide the girl when a camera is pointing at them????
I’ve changed my mind at sending you the pic - my kid has blonde hair and that seems enough for most people to suggest its Maddie!!!!
I agree the legs could be wrapped - but seriously who carries a 4 year old????

Are they tramps on the pic? Or are they made up ex sas bringing Maddie away?
Wasn’t the spanish girl saying she made the pics from a bus? And it’s a car. She’s just taken the opportunity to be once in her life on teli.

I have to agree with Toni there. I know a few people who don’t think that hygiene is that important, either for them personally or for their clothes/homes/belongings.

Thank you, 161, for correcting me about legs on the photo. Anyway, 173 and 174 spotted , too, that this photo might be well a fake, and the age doesn’t really fit.

I think if this was an elaborate kidnapping in PDL, it looks a bit careless for this people to now be walking around with Madeleine in public and next to a road.
Surely they’d be travelling by car at least.
Maybe it’s her, maybe it’s not, but if this is not a doctored-picture, that girl doesn’t look like she belongs to that family.

Why has the Portugese prosecutor intoned that,if the childs body is not found the parents will escape justice,do the Portugese police know more than the British gutter press give them credit for.

Well, I wasn’t even sure about gaggle of geese/flock of sheep - I thought it may be flock of geese?? (definitely not a gaggle of sheep though)
Shit, who knows.
Brandoflour - lets talk about the gay angle.
I have picked up definite gay vibes off Gerry (my older brother is gay and also a Dr and he reminds me a little of him)

177 - ‘p r i c k l e’ that was what I tried to put but it was bleeped out. Must be telepathy. And by putting something it is quotes does that mean it doesn’t get bleeped? Or is my Net Nanny obliterating things from this end.

#168 - I think what you have said sums up many peoples feelings/views on the whole situation. If she had not been left alone (which in itself IS a crime). No one would be writing any crap here. (would they).
Jon - As I have stated previously -if Maddie had wandered off and drowned or got injured (not disappeared)- they parents would have been charged with negligence. But because she is gone and they keep pleading their “innoncence” and stating they they did nothing wrong, everone feels sorry for them. Yes my heart breaks for the fact that such an inncocent little girl is missing and however it happened many people are suffering. but WHY did they leave her alone.

I have worked also in Photoshop as well as many other such software programs for many years. I have also seen that despite the best touch up jobs that it is impossible to disguise where the stamp tool has begun and ended fully despite doing so using intense magnification.
Any investigative team worth its salt could determine a touched up photo within minutes.
If this has gone to Interpol as reported then this fact would be established rapidly.
I have been wondering if the tourists who took the photo are in on the whole thing to get the substantial reward money. They could be ‘placed’ to have seen the child, report sighting, Madeleine ‘found’ reward collected and divided.

no, because if she was, she’d have to be kept in a dark, windowless room all the time now that she’s the most famous child in the world.
September 26th, 2007 at 10:47 am
Everyone is making a fuss about this photo.
The most strange thing about it is a white child with different race parents - so it should be checked out anyway in case it’s someone elses missing kid.
However - can I remind people of one thing - who carries a 4 year old on their back in a sling?????
I had a proper baby carrier for my back and carried my child until the age of about 6 months this way - then my husband managed it for a few more weeks until we both gave up - why? Because they are blooming heavy!!!
I now have a 2 year old that I can carry on my back a short while but in a photo like that her long legs would be wrapped around my body.
As for a 4 year old? I really do not think this is a 4 year old!
If they are kind enough to carry a 4 year old girl who is either capable of walking by herself they are hardly mistreating her !
A tired 4 year old would probably have had a ride on the first mans luggage carrier rather than on that poor womans back!
If you like I will send you a photo of my 2 year old on my back like that - she is a little bigger than that girl in the photo - but with legs!

5 - i too used photoshop, took one of the usual maddie pics, rotated it a bit and dropped down the opacity, layered it over this new photo and lined them up - and i have to admit it could be a match.
however, i am still adamant that the mccanns are to blame and that during this period of ‘no new evidence against them’ they are simply piling on the sympathy stories. It would be my cynical opinion that this poor quality photo is a fake…
September 26th, 2007 at 10:46 am
oh, I really really hope it’s maddie and they get her back. (By they, I don’t mean the negligent parents but the police.)
Doesn’t part of you just hope that she was stolen for a childless couple?

It is true Arthur. When Mr SSS and I go away, we relish the time we spend with the children, as we DO have very busy lives during the week. This is also why we bought another home on the coast, so we can go away every weekend and spend time relaxing with the kids.
Don’t think we are saints though. We DO go out for dinner about 3 times a month, but the difference is, we have older children in their late teens, early twenties, so we have instant, on-the-spot babysitters.
When the older children were young, we never went anywhere except for work without them, and THAT was hard, as back then, few holiday places had creches for young ones, and if you went out, you took the kids with you because leaving them alone just is NOT an option and never has been.

As I said Jon show me one malicious posting I have made directed at the McCanns.
I don’t support them and firmly believe that they should be locked up for negligence. That is not malicious, they committed a crime and should pay for it. Poor little Maddy is.

isn’t it a bit racist to suggest that moroccan nomads do not brush their hair for months at a time?

the ’sas’ they speak of is actually the territorial army.
it stands for ‘Saturdays and Sundays’
September 26th, 2007 at 10:41 am
regarding Maddies hair, if this her in the photo, I doubt they pop down to boots the chemist and pick up a bottle pantene to wash her hair it probably hasnt been properly washed or brushed for that matter for weeks so I should imagine that it would stick out at all angles, the face alone should be enough to identify her not the hairstyle
SSS yes I did see your reply, I am very happy for you and I hope you come right with the perfect job for yourself, boys are easier I think and of course they love their mums
