Madeleine McCann: Blonde Child Seen In Morocco
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY MAIL front page: “Could this be Maddie?”
Readers see a picture of a child being carried on a woman’s back - “The intriguing picture being probed by Interpol.”
Pages 10 and 11: “Could this really be Maddie?”
This is the picture of a girl “in the clutches of a group of Moroccans”. The picture was taken four weeks ago near Tangiers by Spaniard Clara Torres.
DAILY MIRROR front page: “MADDY IN MOROCCO?”
Readers see the same picture. The Full “astonishing story” is on pages 4 and 5.
Pages 4 and 5: “COULD IT BE?” Less the full story than another question.
“GERRY: I KNOW WE WILL BE CLEARED” – Gerry McCann says he and his wife “wanted to be eliminated from the enquiry as quickly as possible”. Some news.
THE SUN front page: “MOROCCO PHOTO SENSATION. IS THIS MADDIE?”
The picture is “sensational”. It has been described as “convincing”, but by whom is not said.
Pages 4 and 5: “GERRY & KATE: IT COULD BE HER – MADDIE PARENTS HOPE AT SIGHTING SENSATION.”
Clara Torres is talking on Spanish radio. She looks at the photo. Says she: “It sent shivers down my spine.”
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “NOW A ‘PHOTO’ OF MADELEINE IN MOROCCO.”
‘Photo’ is placed in quotes lest readers mistake the picture for a ‘SNAP’ or a ‘SHOT’.
Spanish Government official Jose Herrero Arcas says: “The National Police received a photograph by email taken by a young Spanish couple who believe it shows Madeleine McCann. The quality of the photograph is not very clear and it was taken from around 200 metres away. However, the National Police are taking the claim seriously enough to have sent it on to their colleagues at Interpol. I cannot give any more information than that.”
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE – AMAZING PHOTO IN MOROCCO.”
Pages 4 and 5: “MADDIE SEEN IN MOROCCO – Bombshell new photo is probed by Interpol.”
THE TIMES front page: “Police start investigation into ‘picture in Morocco of Madeleine McCann’.”
Page 5: “New photograph shows child like Madeleine on African woman’s back.”
A source close to the McCanns tells one and all: “The McCanns are not going to get their hopes up until the photograph has been sent for forensic examination.” And, dare it be said, a DNA test.
DAILY TELEGRAPH front page: “Is this Madeleine in Morocco?” The search for the missing child has taken a “dramatic turn”.
Page 9: “Gerry McCann is “confident” he and his wife will be cleared. A source tells us: “It is very unlikely that British police would question the McCanns on behalf of the Portuguese now.”
Robert Murat responds to claims by nanny Charlotte Pennington that on the night of Madeleine’s disappearance he was by the McCann family apartment: “I certainly was not there that night. At no point was I there.”
THE GUARDIAN & THE INDEPENDENT no Maddy news today.

this kinda gives you an idea about the african women carrying their children

63 - Jan. I think you will find that the McCanns have not had any charges formally brought against them - either in Portugal or the UK. So to say they have been ‘accused of murder’ is simply not true.

It is interesting to hear that today’s continental police forces are under instruction from a website discussion group.
How times change.

and thanks to people like you, the real suspects have managed to deflect attention long enough to start spinning and whinging that evidence is deteriorating, can’t be trusted after all this time, etc etc etc

Jan, you’re clearly not an expert.
The direction of the hair hanging tells you nothing about the reliability of the picture. In fact, many few elements are able to distinguish a well-doctored pictured from a real one. One of the most common elements used by me and Watson is the sun (not the newspaper). The shade is very difficult to recreate with Photoshop. So for example, if you would add an image of someone on top of an existing picture, the shade of the added person would not be visible on the floor - or in some cases it could show shades that would be contrary to the direction of the shades in the existing picture. It’s extremely hard even with photoshop to add a shade that looks real.
This particular picture is too small for me to judge if any shade should be reflected in the harm or shoulder of the woman carrying the child for example. But I’m sure that’ll be one of the things Interpol will be analysing.
This could of course be the picture of a real child but not Madeleine. In which case, it would make sense to publish the picture to encourage whoever is in that picture to come forward and say it’s them and not Madeleine Mccann.

I myself was once taken in by some photographs of fairies produced by two young girls from Cottingley.

62 - Judge Dread. I heard a spanish reporter talk about this on our local news this morning. The reporter said that the tourist saw the little girl and then said to her husband - I wonder if that could be Maddie, but then thought it simply couldn’t be!
My goodness, two different versions of even THIS!!
September 26th, 2007 at 9:53 am
“But she says when she reported the sighting, Portuguese police told her: “It wasn’t her - Madeleine’s dead.”
CONGRATULATIONS GUYS!! ALL YOUR SMEAR CAMPAIGNING AND PEDDALING OF MISTRUTHS IS APPARENTLY PAYING OFF - THE INVESTIGATION TO FINDING MADELEINE HAS SUFFERED. THE POLICE WERE ALERTED WEEKS AGO AND BECAUSE OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU WHO HAVE LITTLE ELSE TO DO HAVE CONVINCED HALF THE WORLD THE PARENTS KILLED HER THEY TOLD THE TOURIST MADELEINE WAS DEAD.
CONGRATULTIONS AGAIN - YOU SHOULD HANG YOUR HEADS IN SHAME!

53. If this picture is genuine and displays Madeleine, it’s just a start. Then there’s an urgent agenda to findthe girl and to get her back to her parents or the social services and then it’s appropriate to consider if the mcCanns’ are guilty of child neglect or innocent. They are not expecting to get “cleared” before the girl is found, are they.
September 26th, 2007 at 9:52 am
56. Uh common sense?….where else would you go if you were accused of murder? Would you stay on foreign soil or would you go home and get an attorney? It’s common sense. It was a strategy, a play, a push….

Taking pics on a moving bus is easy with a fast film in the camera. These days digital cameras make it even easier.
Apparently, according to Sky news, the person who took the picture didn’t realise at the time she had got the little girl. She was merely taking a pic of local nomads.
September 26th, 2007 at 9:51 am
the woman carrying the child -her face is not so clear as the rest as her hat is casting a shadow over face and shoulder-unlike the others with direct sunlight
September 26th, 2007 at 9:51 am
anyone have a pic of a hole and a spade i can borrow?
September 26th, 2007 at 9:51 am
Jan - what country are you from? I really hate all the xenophobic comments. So completely unneccesary and ott.
September 26th, 2007 at 9:50 am
I said yesterday that the forum was waning and some new breaking news needs to be injected,,but I never imagined a photo too, wow the mccann PR is good
September 26th, 2007 at 9:50 am
49, A lot of Africans do carry children on their backs just like the picture. the same heigh too. The also strap the children to them with a large cloth. The legs may be in the cloth……..

PG police chased the McCanns out of that country. the McCanns had no other choice but to leave and that was by design.
could you link to a source of this?
September 26th, 2007 at 9:48 am
49 -
true about the carrying of the child-
i also wondered if she is a slave would she be walking

PG police are slow, backwards, and a bunch of idiots…oh, and they have a nasty history. so ALL the major news broadcasting agencies that covered the sexual abuse in that country several years ago are considered tabloid?
Please, save it. They are useless and whats even worse is they don’t give a damn about children, theirs, or anyone elses.
September 26th, 2007 at 9:47 am
if this pic ends up being accepted as true, i can see a pic of gerry dumping the body following quite shortly.
September 26th, 2007 at 9:47 am
I was thinking the same as SSS - Maddie doesn’t have a cowlick (what we call it in Australia anyway)….where her fringe has a mind of its own.
September 26th, 2007 at 9:47 am
I still think it looks like those fake internet ghost pics
the girls face is clearer than the others even though shes further away
and looks displaced
September 26th, 2007 at 9:46 am
48-
slightly more hairy.
the face seems to be wider and higher cheekboned but like i say the pixels are blurring.
September 26th, 2007 at 9:45 am
great news, SSS boy or girl
regarding #41 in SA a lot of the africans carry the children on their backs and this looks at the right height to me, just cant figure out where the legs are, and at 4 years old they would make the child walk
September 26th, 2007 at 9:45 am

you could overlap agorilla and it would do the same.
September 26th, 2007 at 9:43 am
they are def on a bus as i have seen the pic,
i have also overlapped madeleines face onto the pic and it could be her.
the pixels bleed ito one another causing distortion

“I’ve had my suspicions about Madeleine being in Morocco espcially since no one bothered to follow up with the report of a sighting reported earlier by the social worker from……Belgium was it?”
Nope Norway. There was also a sighting in Tongeren Belgium…which led to a forensic analysys and someone being identified…innocent. The earlier sighting was from a couple that lived next to the hospital where Gerry works (a 5 minute drive from Rothley).
“The PG police are useless.”
Really? Why?
“They wanted the McCanns out of their country.”
Really? Why? They didn’t ask them to leave.
“They tried to make themselves look good by turning all the attention away from their lack of investigating and their incompetence(sp).”
They didn’t make themselves “look good”…
a) because of the xenophobia and chauvenism it would incite they took a difficult and brave decision to go after these “media managers”
b) they followed the statistically mostly likely line of inquiery (other country’s police forces would have done the same). The parents/people close to the family are involved in 85% of cases like this. It would have been “incompetent” NOT to treat them as suspects.
Also, I wouldn’t call the biggest man-hunt in Portuguese history a “lack of investigation”…
One piece of advice… stop reading the tabs…
September 26th, 2007 at 9:41 am
i think its a case of someone trying to get their hands on the reward. i have doubts about the photo. i think its hard to get a clear photo like that from a moving bus at 60km fromm 200 feet away
September 26th, 2007 at 9:40 am
The little girls hair seems to be hanging the right way for the way she’s being held….I’ll wait to see what the experts have to say about it.
September 26th, 2007 at 9:40 am
I do not understand why one of the Mc’s hasn’t gone to Morroco yet to raise awareness!
If it was one of mine, I would have been there like a shot!
