Madeleine McCann: Spies, Richard Branson PI And Maddy TV
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE. SPY-IN-SKY PLAN TO FIND HER KIDNAPPER.”
So she was kidnapped. Wasn’t she?
“Satellite and aerial footage as well as internet traffic should be used to help the hunt,” say “intelligence experts”, including Professor Anthony Glees, Director of Brunel University’s Centre for Intelligence and Security Studies. Security is his thing.
Pages 4 and 5: “Riddle of the McCanns’ day out” – Why did the McCanns go to Spain on August 3 and what did they do there? Clarence Mitchell says the TV cameras and journalists tracked their every move.
“Branson: They are innocent” – Richard Branson PI calls it a “grotesque nightmare”. He has donated £100,000 to help the McCanns clear their name. He says the McCanns have “the weight and support of Britain behind them”.
THE SUN front page: “OUTRAGE AS COPS CLAIM MADDIE ‘BURIED IN SPAIN’.”
Pages 6 and 7: “POLICE PROBE LOST 2 HOURS” – Police Claim the McCanns buried Madeleine during a “missing two hours” in Spain.
Kate and Gerry are “shattered”.
Says the Sun:
“SUSPICIOUS the trip was postponed from the day before – because Gerry had intestinal problems.
“’STRANGE’” that the couple from Rothley, Leics, chose to visit Spain on a national holiday, when the shops were shut.
“MYSTERIOUS that the McCanns racked up ‘unjustified mileage’ in their Renault Scenic – hired 25 days after Maddie disappeared.”
A source says a new ad campaign to find Madeleine will start in two weeks.
DAILY MAIL page 3: “Police use CCTV to map McCanns trips.”
As newspaper Correio de Manha reports, Spanish police have given their Portuguese counterparts CCTV footage “showing the Renault Scenic in places in Spain where there was ‘no reason’ for the couple to be.”
A TV series based on Madeleine McCann is being produced in Chile. Says Chilean newspaper El Mercurio: “The case is becoming a soap opera.”
DAILY MIRROR front page: “KATE IS SO FRAGILE. Fears for mum after latest blow.”
Kate McCann’s face is all over the front page. “The anguish is plain to see.” A friend hears that Madeleine had not been found in Morocco: “Kate is so fragile. She’s suffering a devastating disappointment.”
Page 5: “They suffered a devastating blow with the false alarm in Morocco. Kate has crashed.”
“COPS PROBE SPAIN TRIP.”
DAILY STAR pages 6 and 7: “MADDIE DUMPED IN SPAIN.” An “exclusive”.
THE TIMES page 16: Mick Hume says: “The line between investigation and emotive entertainment has disappeared.”
THE TELEGRAPH page 6: “Portuguese focus on McCanns’ Spain trip” – Clarence Mitchell says the McCanns are innocent.
THE GUARDIAN and THE INDEPENDENT: no Madeleine news today.

I’m assuming that if the police had the McCanns under surveillance on the day they went to Huelva they might just have noticed them burying Madeleine’s body. Maybe they did but decided not to say anything for a while?
With regard to pointing out the distinctive eye mark, I have to say that I agree with you that it seems a dangerous thing to have done. At the time I said that it made the child “too hot to handle”.
However, I think, in the final analysis, they just decided to go for full publicity, eye included, on the basis of advice. The US have always said that, despite the serious risks involved in publicity, statistically, the success in finding missing kids is more likely when full descriptions and insistent, persistent, non-stop publicity is given.
I do agree that it may have been counter-productive to publicise the one thing that an abductor could not change, unlike hair etc.
By saying the only known fact was the disappearance of the child, I just meant that all the timelines etc. etc. are only speculation and that all the reports since are known to us only through inaccurate press reports.
I have never defended leaving the kids in the apartment even if frequently checked. I do however think it is widely done, from what people tell me who use these holiday complexes but I have never defended the practice. However, I see little point in dwelling on that now. The child’s disappearance needs to be explained. I dislike the sanctimonious I-would-never-do-such-a-dreadful-thing attitude of some posters. Let the one who is without sin…..

I have no problem when you say what you just said - they come across odd. I accept that and haven’t a problem with it. It is not being judgmental of them I mind, and I am sorry if I came over as being judgmental about you, I don’t mean to be , so sorry.
What I was trying to say, but obviously have failed to, is that declaring that someone you see crying must be faking it or insincere because they are not doing it exactly as you would, is not a great way to think. Say you are left handed and I am right handed and I say to someone else “look at her, she must be writing rubbish, I doubt they are even proper words - if she could really write she would use her right hand like me” What I myself said about you would be the real rubbish.
Lets drop it, sorry I brought it up - no offense intended.

I can see the logic of registering both Madeline and Madeleine as it’s likely folk could easily mis-spell the name. And I guess it makes sense to register the other ones to make sure no-one else has them.

i find it interesting that cuddlecat.com is a swingers site too.
wonder who named the cat?

Although interestingly http://WWW.FINDMADELINE.COM does take you to the “official” site!
September 29th, 2007 at 1:25 am
Day 150 is sunday-tomorrow if you are in UK. I wonder if that website is officially recognised by the Mccanns-it seems to be American.
Maybe we’re all getting excited over nothing and the weekend will bring more of the same-K and G hand in hand telling us its ludicrous!

Stig,
to clarify my point, you’re assuming they’re feeling normal grief even though they’re not showing it - because you can’t believe they wouldn’t be feeling it.
Where as I don’t see normal grief - and we’ve plenty of parents to compare them to - so I wonder why. I’m not assuming it’s because they’re guilty - but it might be.
Also, I did apologise a couple of posts down. I have a dislike of Maura bordering on the irrational.

September 29th, 2007 at 1:10 am
Stranger than fiction - or what - a few weeks ago on this site someone was convinced that Maddie would be foind on day 150 - isn’t that tomorrow???
September 29th, 2007 at 1:10 am
Stig, I didn’t notice you were still here, so maybe you will.
September 29th, 2007 at 1:09 am
The real stig.
I doubt you’ll ever read this, but anyway -
My reaction is not invalid because you say I’m not allowed to react that way.
To me, the McCanns come across as odd.
I don’t know why they behave the way they do, and you don’t either - it could be grief, guilt, or something else.
I do know that when I watch them, I think, they’re odd.
I don’t understand why you don’t get the difference - between what they’re feeling (which is unknown to me - I can only assume or believe what they tell the press) and my reaction to them which I am sure about.
Your post was seriously irritating - you were being presumptuous, judgemental and trying to make me conform to your proscribed reactions - all while accusing me of the same.

I predict that Maddeleines body will be found tomorrow - K&G will be charged with her ‘killing’ whether accidental or murder. Why do I think this - because Team McCann think that Kate & Gerry will be imprisoned soon

Thank you for that informative post. These allegations are ones I would have rather not believed, so it is actually a relief that they appear to be groundless.

The Louise Woodward case allowed the press in Britain to be partisan because it was felt that the Americans were very harsh with Louise because she was a Brit. Perhaps they were, perhaps they weren’t but that’s the way it was portrayed. But I can’t remember any stops being pulled out for her. However, the McCanns have been treated like Royalty from the beginning and have begun to think of themselves as that.
But apart from this, despite the fact that a child is missing presumed dead, that they are the only suspects, that two other small children are in their care…they are regarded as saints by rich people galore, by journalists by the score and by our Prime Minister himself. The whole focus is on them, not on the children and that’s what is odd because this is such a child-centred country…and yet, it’s not.
There are other interests at work here far more important than children - the iron hand has come out of the velvet glove. What really counts in this whole sordid saga is influence, power and wealth, on both sides - the McCanns and the government’s. I can’t quite work out exactly why though in relation to the government. What lies behind? It could simply be that Brown has nailed his colours to the McCann mast to prove his “daddy” credentials and to have them torn down would be too much for his ego to bear and reflect on his judgment. Or there could be people in high places ‘involved’ in some way.It sounds fantastic, but this whole saga is fantastic and truth is stranger than fiction. I don’t know, I just don’t know.

I don’t mind providing sources to back up my claims but over many days the person I referred to made claims about emotional expression or lack thereof. Each and every time - without exception, that person rejected any links or evidence I and others presented, in the manner I described. If you would like to follow up on this - the endgame of the matter, as far as I am concerned, is here:
Post 1097 in this thread:

If you want to followup the original posts leading to this - on this occasion - the sequence is all messed up for some reason - they are currently posts 986 - 1000 - 1010 - 1097
