Madeleine McCann: People Smugglers, A Small Fridge And Child Alerts
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE - STOLEN BY PEOPLE SMUGGLERS.”
“Missing Madeleine McCann may be in the hands of North African people smugglers. Police in Morocco, investigating a reported sighting, believe they have identified a link with a ruthless gang of traffickers.”
Remember when Madeleine was in “the clutches” of Moroccans, and how the gang turned out to be a couple of farmers and their daughter?
Now: “The breakthrough came a few weeks after Madeleine went missing when a Spanish tourist reported seeing a blonde girl matching her description being dragged along by a scruffy, Arab-looking woman in the town of Zaio.”
Spanish tourist Isabel Gonzalez has told the world how she saw a blonde toddler in Morocco. Not Bouchra Benaissa. Another blonde Moroccan.
“The alarm was raised in May by 60-year-old Spanish tourist Isabel Gonzalez who said: ‘The girl I saw was blonde, with pale skin, whereas everyone else in the area is dark-skinned and dark-haired.”
Well, not everyone. Remember Bouchra Benaissa..?
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE BODY KEPT IN FREEZER.”
THE SUN front page: “MADDIE COPS IN SICK SLUR.”
“COPS MOST SICKENING SLUR YET” – “MADDIE’S BODY KEPT IN FRIDGE.”
“Maddie parents mark 150 days”
“McCann’s gagged by cops” – “A friend of the McCanns said: ‘It is madness. We are being forced to inhabit a fantasy world in which we can increase public awareness of Madeleine’s disappearance and urge the public’s help through a poster campaign, but her own parents cannot help in this because of the legal status attached to them. It is so frustrating - Madeleine’s own mum and dad are not allowed to speak about her.’”
So they have anything to say that is not said through their spokesman, Gerry’s blog and friends, and to the police?
DAILY MIRROR front page: “MADELEINE SENSATION – NEW SUSPECT IN STAIRWELL.”
“A British tourist seen ‘hiding’ in a stairwell outside Madeleine McCann’s apartment on the night she disappeared was being investigated last night.
“The new suspect, stocky and wearing two-tone glasses, was spotted by an Ocean Club worker just 12 metres from the flat. The employee, who did not want to be named, exclusively told the Mirror: ‘I’ll never forget him.’”
DAILY MAIL: “McCanns gagged from answering claims they dumped Madeleine’s body in Spain.”
•Portuguese papers claim Kate McCann killed Madeleine while Gerry played tennis
•Couple ‘then hid the child’s body in a fridge and later disposed of it in Spain’
•McCann spokesman Clarence Mitchell said the reports were ‘utterly ludicrous’
These are the “latest lurid allegations”.
“A family friend ridiculed the suggestion that Madeleine’s body could have been stored in a fridge, saying: ‘Have you seen the size of the fridges in those apartments? Of course they did not stuff her in a fridge.’”
THE TIMES: “Kate and Gerry McCann’s friends refute ‘missing hours’ claim as smears continue.”
“The parents of Madeleine McCann have pleaded for an end to the distressing smear campaign that has suggested that they may have killed their missing daughter…
“It was claimed yesterday that police in Portugal believe that Kate McCann killed Madeleine while putting her to bed at their holiday apartment in Praia da Luz between 7pm and 8.30pm on May 3 and then hid her corpse in a fridge, with the help of friends.
“The respected Diario de Noticias newspaper said that officers believed that Mrs McCann accidentally killed Madeleine while her husband was playing tennis.”
Stop the smears. But read all about them first.
THE GUARDIAN: “EU plan for missing child alerts.”
Oh?
“Portugal will next week call for the creation of an EU-wide alert system for missing children, five months after Madeleine McCann disappeared from a holiday resort in the south of the country. The move has been welcomed by the McCann family.”
So she was taken across boarders?
“In a statement released through Clarence Mitchell, the McCanns’ spokesman, Madeleine’s father, Gerry, said: ‘If this is true, we would very much welcome it as it would be a major step in the right direction. We feel it would be vital in protecting other children and their families. Kate and I have consistently campaigned to effect change throughout the EU to help protect children.’”
But Madeleine McCann might not have been stolen. Is this just another instance of people jumping on story to promote their pet cause?
DAILY TELEGRAPH: “Madeleine McCann’s parents may face jail.”
No, not for child neglect.
“Kate and Gerry McCann could face 12 months in prison if they speak out to defend themselves against a slur campaign in Portugal because of the country’s strict secrecy laws, it is claimed.”
Says Clarence Mitchell: “Each and every one of these nonsensical allegations causes real pain and hurt for both Gerry and Kate.
“We just hope that everyone can see these ridiculous rumours for what they are.”

5 months on and out the blue we have a nanny and a guy putting something in a boat, and someone else also out of the blue ,who says there was a Crouching Tiger..opps sorry man on stairs outside apartment. My credibility is shot to hell and gone. I read the Spanish woman who gave the dodgy photo over from Morocco was paid by press and had a lawyer in advance next to her……why..?????
Express story today is from May 16th or so…er hello.!!!!!
Who is paying these sudden new folk, and have they been in a coma for past 5 months. No credibility in new stories after 5 long long months.
This saga gets more weird and bizarre by the day..It has become “ludicrous” and beyond logic, and sanity, or facts now.
Meanwhile back on the ranch on day 149 Madeline remains missing..alive or dead..abducted, sold, or sedated to death.Who knows in the blizzard of crap that gets printed in tabloids, and the Tsunami of disinformation from good old Clarence.?
Why have such allegedly “innocent” people got so damn much to say and why it is all a contradiction of what they said before.Or does Clarence suffer from spin- itus and creative literature.?

91. As far as I know, the US is BIG on extradition for foreigners and citizens alike.
Here’s a list of countries with whom the US has extradition treaties:

Not that we can count on what the media prints as truth, but today I read that the McCanns will still not be able to have access to the PJ’s evidence files. They haven’t been officially charged yet. I think once they are (if they are), then that would be the time they and their lawyers would be given that information, so that they can prepare their defense (at least that’s how it works in the US).

Could someone who is familiar with the law comment on the fact that apparently Kate and Gerry McCann have separate lawyers to represent each of them? Would that be a normal thing for a couple to do if they were both convinced of each other’s innocence?
I think its because they’re both being ‘looked at’ for different offences…… I think even here id husband and wife are charged they have separate legal preresentation.
Ya Boo 242. Take no notice. They just love a chance to act their shoe size!

During their entire holiday week, the McCanns did indeed leave their children in the apartment alone, unsupervised, while they dined away in the complex. One night, supposedly, they even traveled 5 miles (KM? — I can’t remember for sure, but driving distance) away for dinner at a restaurant, leaving the kids alone. Unbelievable, isn’t it?
Mr. O’Brien and Ms. Tanner left their daughter (same age as Maddie) alone unsupervised on May 3, also, even though she was supposedly ill and vomiting. One of the other couples used a babysitter provided by the resort (in their apt.) and the fourth couple used a baby monitor (portable listening device with the base located in the apartment).
I will look for links to back up that information, which I’ve read before.

I meant to post a link. Here it is: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/09/21/nmaddy421.xml
Here is an excerpt from the article, near the bottom of the page:
“It is understood the McCanns will have separate lawyers to deal with the allegations which have been put to them by Portuguese police.
Detectives in the Algarve are apparently working on the theory that Mrs McCann may have accidentally killed Madeleine and relied on her husband to help cover it up. The McCanns have vehemently denied the allegation.
The appointment of the two leading lawyers is thought to be one of Portugal’s most expensive defence teams for people who are only arguidos, or suspects.
Mr and Mrs McCann met the two men with their British lawyers in London yesterday.”

I’ve spent entirely too much time on this site ever since the PJ leaked that they suspected the parents’ involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance/death. One of the side effects of this was a couple of nights ago, I was driving about and I could feel myself in the McCanns shoes and became overwhelmed and deeply despondent by what they are facing, particularly if they are guilty–they are in a huge trap of their own making and there’s no way out. If they are guilty and want to stop this monstrous publicity, they’ll have to confess to what they’ve done and go to prison, not only for what happened to Madeleine but the additional charges for fraud. If they’re found not guilty, there will always be a large percentage of the population who will still believe they are, unless an abductor is proven to exist without a doubt. At the very least, life will be unpleasant for them from now on.
If one of the parents accidentally killed Madeleine, I would have had sympathy for them, if they admitted it immediately after the act. Raising children is no easy task, particularly if a child is a handful and uncooperative. Kate has said that from a very young age, Madeleine was an independent child and had bags of personality, which could be translated into Madeleine is/was very strong-willed. My own daughter was almost impossible to live with at the ages of 4 and 5–she still thinks she should run the world at age 7, but does listen better and is more reasonable now. If Kate lost her temper and flew into a rage, I could understand how it could happen. I’m more suspicious of family/friends’ comments that Kate never even raised her voice to the kids–how many parents can say that truthfully?
Even if it were a death due to mistakes in sedation, I could sympathize with the parents for allowing their own pursuit of pleasure and freedom from their parental responsiblities cloud their judgement, although I would be angry with their behavior (I already am angry at their known irresponsibility of leaving their small children unsupervised).
In both cases, it would be important for the parent(s) to be held legally accountable for their actions.
I can understand someone being frightened to stand up and take responsibility when a terrible tragedy occurs and pay the high price for it. What the world will not forgive this couple for, if they are found guilty, is misleading and manipulating the public afterward with their gigantic publicity campaign and the lie after lie that have been told.
I can only say that I am glad that I can turn away from this tragedy and not have to face it day after day, if I choose to. They never will be able to.
Anyway, after that feeling of doom and gloom, I’ve managed to tear myself away from Anorak for large chunks of time during the last two days and I feel much better–I recommend it highly to everyone here. I don’t think I can stay away forever, though, until the case is resolved or at least stops being a constant in the media’s coverage.

Did the McCann’s always leave the doors open and the kids alone when they went out before May 3. Was it general practice to leave kids alone at the resort? Were the friends equally carless?
Do we know whether the McCann’s were doing exactly what everybody else was doing?

248 et al. Well that’s the main thing. Having a laugh isn’t it. Especially if it is at the expense of people who do not fit your cultural stereotype of how a person should look.
I needed somthing like this to prompt me into getting away from this site.
260 No - I have been a regular poster (v “anti-McCann” if you must call it that) but could forsee the vitriol which would be typed should I protest at the tone of the comments about Aunti P. My motivation for posting my comments? I work in child protection and advise an anti-bullying programme in schools for a local authority. One of the problems we have is the anti-fat brigade of young people literally making life a living hell for those they consider unworthy. So, whenever in ‘adult’ life I come across the same comments, I try and challenge those comments, or at least register that they are not endorsed by everyone.

Carmen,
With all due respect you should see a therapist. We were discussing a psychological profile. And people DID answer your question, or at least tried to.

“Well it’s gone quiet again and I’m having another slow period - just like with the synonym word game for “ludicrous”. So on the same tack - and we have a poster by the same name phrases - it’s time to turn our attention to a nice little grouping:
hurtful
pain and hurt
unhelpful ”
What about ‘Harrowing’? No, too obscure for the apparatchik.
‘Distressing’ — this is a very useful word because it can encompass
the twins feelings too considering they are always asking about Madeleine (when instructed to, if anyone from the media is around)
‘Anguish’ - or, if Mitch says it ‘Anguishing’ (as he’s illiterate)
‘Heartache’ - Mmm — this could be useful considering Kate’s skeletal appearance and assumed break in that area of her chest.
‘Torment’; ‘Torture’ — these are more threatening words and could be applied to Anorak posters in relation to the effect they are having on the royal couple.
‘Sadden’ — this is the word I would advise Mr. Mitchell to use over and over again. It implies saintliness and forgiveness. “Kate and Gerry are saddened to hear this…” “Speaking for Kate and Gerry I am saddened that….” Very very useful word for his purposes.
