Madeleine McCann: People Smugglers, A Small Fridge And Child Alerts
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE - STOLEN BY PEOPLE SMUGGLERS.”
“Missing Madeleine McCann may be in the hands of North African people smugglers. Police in Morocco, investigating a reported sighting, believe they have identified a link with a ruthless gang of traffickers.”
Remember when Madeleine was in “the clutches” of Moroccans, and how the gang turned out to be a couple of farmers and their daughter?
Now: “The breakthrough came a few weeks after Madeleine went missing when a Spanish tourist reported seeing a blonde girl matching her description being dragged along by a scruffy, Arab-looking woman in the town of Zaio.”
Spanish tourist Isabel Gonzalez has told the world how she saw a blonde toddler in Morocco. Not Bouchra Benaissa. Another blonde Moroccan.
“The alarm was raised in May by 60-year-old Spanish tourist Isabel Gonzalez who said: ‘The girl I saw was blonde, with pale skin, whereas everyone else in the area is dark-skinned and dark-haired.”
Well, not everyone. Remember Bouchra Benaissa..?
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE BODY KEPT IN FREEZER.”
THE SUN front page: “MADDIE COPS IN SICK SLUR.”
“COPS MOST SICKENING SLUR YET” – “MADDIE’S BODY KEPT IN FRIDGE.”
“Maddie parents mark 150 days”
“McCann’s gagged by cops” – “A friend of the McCanns said: ‘It is madness. We are being forced to inhabit a fantasy world in which we can increase public awareness of Madeleine’s disappearance and urge the public’s help through a poster campaign, but her own parents cannot help in this because of the legal status attached to them. It is so frustrating - Madeleine’s own mum and dad are not allowed to speak about her.’”
So they have anything to say that is not said through their spokesman, Gerry’s blog and friends, and to the police?
DAILY MIRROR front page: “MADELEINE SENSATION – NEW SUSPECT IN STAIRWELL.”
“A British tourist seen ‘hiding’ in a stairwell outside Madeleine McCann’s apartment on the night she disappeared was being investigated last night.
“The new suspect, stocky and wearing two-tone glasses, was spotted by an Ocean Club worker just 12 metres from the flat. The employee, who did not want to be named, exclusively told the Mirror: ‘I’ll never forget him.’”
DAILY MAIL: “McCanns gagged from answering claims they dumped Madeleine’s body in Spain.”
•Portuguese papers claim Kate McCann killed Madeleine while Gerry played tennis
•Couple ‘then hid the child’s body in a fridge and later disposed of it in Spain’
•McCann spokesman Clarence Mitchell said the reports were ‘utterly ludicrous’
These are the “latest lurid allegations”.
“A family friend ridiculed the suggestion that Madeleine’s body could have been stored in a fridge, saying: ‘Have you seen the size of the fridges in those apartments? Of course they did not stuff her in a fridge.’”
THE TIMES: “Kate and Gerry McCann’s friends refute ‘missing hours’ claim as smears continue.”
“The parents of Madeleine McCann have pleaded for an end to the distressing smear campaign that has suggested that they may have killed their missing daughter…
“It was claimed yesterday that police in Portugal believe that Kate McCann killed Madeleine while putting her to bed at their holiday apartment in Praia da Luz between 7pm and 8.30pm on May 3 and then hid her corpse in a fridge, with the help of friends.
“The respected Diario de Noticias newspaper said that officers believed that Mrs McCann accidentally killed Madeleine while her husband was playing tennis.”
Stop the smears. But read all about them first.
THE GUARDIAN: “EU plan for missing child alerts.”
Oh?
“Portugal will next week call for the creation of an EU-wide alert system for missing children, five months after Madeleine McCann disappeared from a holiday resort in the south of the country. The move has been welcomed by the McCann family.”
So she was taken across boarders?
“In a statement released through Clarence Mitchell, the McCanns’ spokesman, Madeleine’s father, Gerry, said: ‘If this is true, we would very much welcome it as it would be a major step in the right direction. We feel it would be vital in protecting other children and their families. Kate and I have consistently campaigned to effect change throughout the EU to help protect children.’”
But Madeleine McCann might not have been stolen. Is this just another instance of people jumping on story to promote their pet cause?
DAILY TELEGRAPH: “Madeleine McCann’s parents may face jail.”
No, not for child neglect.
“Kate and Gerry McCann could face 12 months in prison if they speak out to defend themselves against a slur campaign in Portugal because of the country’s strict secrecy laws, it is claimed.”
Says Clarence Mitchell: “Each and every one of these nonsensical allegations causes real pain and hurt for both Gerry and Kate.
“We just hope that everyone can see these ridiculous rumours for what they are.”

I thought that ‘non-posed’ picture was stupid, but I’m glad you found this one. Even that guy thinks she smells rotten.

Here’s another article from Sept. 9 that confirms the McCanns did leave the children alone every night to go to dinner. It also includes this following sentence, all under the subheading of ‘Bedtime.’
“Bedtime
Every night, say the McCanns, they would put the children down at 7pm-7.30pm, and at an unknown time leave them sleeping in the apartment. At 8.30pm on 3 May, they arrived for a meal at a nearby tapas bar with their friends. They chose not to use the resort’s crèche or a babysitter. The apartment’s French windows are believed to have been unlocked. There have been unsubstantiated suggestions that the McCanns sedated Madeleine, who was sometimes difficult at bedtime, and allegations that a syringe was found in the apartment. The family deny that. They say there was a dropper, used to give medicine to kids, and agree they sometimes gave the mild infant painkiller Calpol to the children. Reports, never denied, that the McCanns’ younger children did not wake in all the commotion after the raising of the alarm has fed suspicions that they might have been sedated. One piece of circumstantial evidence is the claim of a barman in Lagos, five miles away, that he saw the McCanns in the town one night without their children. The McCanns deny this.”
Note the last sentence refers to the time someone said they witnessed them 5 miles away from the resort having dinner without their children.

296 - True it was - they haven’t really explained the logic behind any of their childcare decisions.

The media really should have used this photograph of Nanny Charlotte instead of that “thinking on the bench” one:

Here’s a September 9 article that reviews the facts and speculation about the case up to that time, and it includes the following sentence:
“One piece of circumstantial evidence is the claim of a barman in Lagos, five miles away, that he saw the McCanns in the town one night without their children. The McCanns deny this.”
http://news.independent.co.uk/europe/article2944400.ece
This article also confirms that it was a regular practice to leave the children alone when the parents went out to dinner, as well as mentioning that Maddie was difficult to get to go to sleep and the parents did use Calprol for the children. This is all under the subheading ‘Bedtime.’

at the end of that report it says that 500 apartments had been searched…. well that screws the freezer in the next apartment theory…

I was wondering when UK psychics were going to begin investigating. Silly but some crime and kidnapping cases have been solved with the help of a US psychihc. This article is from September 5th:
Paranormal review reports that police in Portugal has confirmed that they are following up leads by psychic in their search for Madeleine McCann, who disappeared in the country four weeks ago.
Three British psychics, all of who claim previous successes in such cases, flew to Portugal in order to be closer to the place of the event. This, in their opinion, will help them to “sense” better information. The three psychic mediums are: Amanda Hart, Ben Murphy and Diane Lazarus.
The article then cites a long report from Amanda Hart, where she describes her vision of Madeleine, her abductors and whereabouts, including such claims that her hair was cut like a boy, that there’s a woman and two men involved in the kidnapping and that she gets two locations, one Mombassa and other Amsterdam. She furthermore describes the countryside where the child is held.

Here’s a link to a May 9 article that states it was regular practice for the McCanns during holiday (as well as other vacationers in the area) to leave their children alone in their rooms (see first few paragraphs):
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=453049&in_page_id=1770&ct=5
I had trouble accessing for the site awhile–sorry it took so long.
As I can only put one link at a time in a post without having it go through the mods, I’ll post more recent and detailed info. as I find it.

Here’s the link to the interview you wanted - right at the end KM is asked what she would say to Madeleine, and she looks down and around and mutters something about “She knows we love her”.

however, the service was good enough for them to dump the kids in it every day.
September 29th, 2007 at 9:03 pm
Thats the thing about these holiday resorts - you don’t know how qualified the ‘nannies’ or babysitters are. If you looked statistically at the risk of abduction versus the risk of harm to a child by a carer/babysitter/nanny it wouldnt surprise me if there were more cases of death due to negligence or harm of children by a so called employed carer.
I rang a reputable nanny agency a few years ago to get cover for the school holidays. They refused to let me meet the person they were recommending and also refused to provide proof of a CRB check. They said that most parents found this acceptable which surprised me

281. Agreed The McNotts.
I find it strange that Mitchell is STILL using the Portuguese silence law as a reason why the McCanns and friends cannot be interviewed? That’s a real laugh. They’ve said so much already without really saying much at all. But the fact is they may speak freely about the case except on sensitive investigative issues such as evidence.

275. I’d like to find this interview of Kate as well. A few of us tried last week and the video was no where to be found on Google or YouTube. I was told it had existed and several had watched it. I;ve only read the interview and would be very interested to see if Kate’s reactions were just as the reporters described, or if it was all bs.

91. As far as I know, the US is BIG on extradition for foreigners and citizens alike.
Here’s a list of countries (yes Portugal is one) with whom the US has extradition treaties:
