Madeleine McCann: The Nanny Suspect, Amaral Policing And Jail
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
SUNDAY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE MYSTERY. BRING IT ON.”
The Sunday Express is not the Express, which has form some weeks led with the front-page banner “MADELEINE”. The Sundays Express goes its own way.
“McCanns remain defiant as they face 40 questions from UK police this week”
“Kate and Gerry’s fury as new sighting in Morocco by businessman is ignored”
SUNDAY MIRROR front page: “MADDIE HUNT: THE TRUTH.”
The truth… At last…
“DISGRACE.”
A picture of Madeleine McCann (on the right). A picture of Portuguese copper Goncarlo Amaral (left).
“Police have ignored 250 sightings of her” – and have investigated how many?
“Cop leading police probe works four hours a day” – Amaral’s not overworked and fresh.
“He has three-hour boozy lunches with pals” – Amaral holds lengthy meetings to discuss and masticate over the case with team.
“Puffing on a cigarette and knocking back beers, the man leading the world’s biggest missing child inquiry enjoys yet another long, boozy lunch.”
Good to know that the Mirror is not wasting its time and watching him.
STAR ON SUNDAY: “THREATS TO McCANNS.”
“Friends say the couple are ‘extremely concerned’ by the nature of the threats and are considering hiring extra security.
Last night a spokeswoman for the McCanns, both 39, confirmed that they had been sent what she described as ‘negative letters and fear mail’.”
INDEPENDENT: “Maddie ‘kidnapped by maid’, says email.”
“The McCanns’ spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, said they were ‘encouraged’ by the development.”
SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: Kate McCann will risk jail to find Madeleine
Kate McCann has been told by her legal team that she faces jail sentence if she flouts Portuguese law to discuss details of the four-year-old’s disappearance in a high-profile television interview.
She tells a “close friend”: “I will do what I must. What does any of it matter if it helps find Madeleine?”
“It is what Kate thinks will help,” a close friend tells the paper. “What choice does she have? Unless Kate and Gerry ignore the law and speak out, their chances of finding Madeleine will dwindle further. Better to risk prison if it helps find her.
“Will the Portuguese police really prosecute a mother whose sole aim is to find her daughter or at least, God forbid, discover the whereabouts of her body? Kate, most of all, believes risking a jail sentence is nothing compared to finding Madeleine.”
Who needs an interview with Kate with friends like that?
THE OBSERVER: “This limbo that lasts a lifetime,” writes Carol Sarler.
“The McCanns are said to be devastated by dashed hopes; if so, they must get used to it, for there will be more sightings, more dashing and, to add to their misery, more harassment of more innocent families. I know this because, having investigated the disappearance of Ben Needham on Kos in 1991, the unfolding of the McCann case has felt like one long, wretched, groundhog summer.
“Ben, recapped in a nutshell: his grandparents, Eddie and Chris Needham, moved from Sheffield to Kos with their teenage son Stephen, daughter Kerry and her boyfriend and their son, Ben…
“…The singular difference between the Needhams and the McCanns is, crudely, class. Eddie has homemade tattoos on his knuckles, Chris was a grandmother at 38, Kerry and her boyfriend - a man known, as they say, to the police - lived in a council block. Perhaps this explains why, throughout their ordeal, nobody from the British consulate in Athens once got off their butt or went to Kos to help or support; surgeon Gerry McCann, by contrast, mobilised the world.”
“Arabic adverts aid Madeleine hunt”… “Despite the disappointment of last week’s misleading sighting of a blonde girl in the Moroccan town of Zaio, the McCanns believe that their daughter might be somewhere in the country.”
TIMES: No Madeleine news today.

Agreed. I just can’t fathom how you can be in a frame of mind to even function less than 24 hrs after a child is abducted. And wouldn’t you be absolultely shattered physically if you’d been up till 4:30am? I don’t even know how you’d decided to stop searching at that time. Wouldn’t you be functioning on auto-pilot? If so, how could you make rational decisions like getting your haircut?

Does anyone remember that not so long ago British sniffer dogs had “discovered” the scent of MM:s corpse in her bed in the flat?
How did the stairs get into it?

“im trying to work out in my theory why a cuddle cat might need washing. It doesnt fit my theory for it to need washing, why would it need washing (if one parks the iodea of ’smell of death’ for a moment).”
Covered in sunscreen I believe.

Washign the cat has always perplexed me. I have a friend who’s dad died a year ago and after the first few days and the funeral were over, she made a point of getting his favourite shirt, unwashed, and keeping it under her pillow so she could smell him for as long as possible.
Washing the cat seems on the face of it, contrary to the sort of ‘closeness’ that a mother would want to have with a missing daughter. If I were tryin gto find a reasonable explanation, I would go with the fact that she has all of Madeleine’s clothes and toys. If she wanted to be able to smell Madeleine, she could do it with any one of a number of items, whilst using Cuddle Cat as a sort of symbol and taking it everywhere with her. If as a result, the Cat needed a wash, ok. Perhaps not what I’d do, but hardly a pointer towards foul play.
There are a number of possible reasons for the cat on the shelf. Maddies was naughty and it was put there as punishment. Kate knew Maddie was going to be taken and wanted to make sure the cat wasn’t. I still don’t have a persuasive argument one way or another on this and as it isn’t on the critical path, I don’t see us coming up with anything compeling around the cat on the shelf incident.
If I were trying to find a readon for foul play, I would question why Kate would want to hang onto the cat, making it less easy for the police to take it. Even then, the police and the UK police have had every opportunity to seize it and run tests. The portuguese have already taken it once and found nothing sinister on it.
Bottom line, I thing the cat is a red herring.
P.S. I am not hell bent on anything. I just find the anti-McCann convictions of accidental death on here ill-thought out and laughable. I await serious attempts to find the mcCanns implicated. I am not holding my breath.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply to my previous questions. What you say seems to all make sense and tie in with my own depth of feelings about the case.

You seem hell bent yourself - but on proving - well, not quite sure what.
We dont know what the police actually think. They are trying to work out what might have happened and are likely to try lots of scenarios.
Like me, I too keep adjusting my suppositions and theories - for example cuddle cat. Why on the shelf? Didnt fit my theories until I thought, hey - maybe cuddle cat was infused with some sedative and one of the people checking Maddie put it on the shelf, Maddie woke up and wandered out …..
Lets face it, Maddie either didnt wake up as she was sedated so they knew she wouldnt wander out of the unlocked doors or she wasnt sedated so she did wander - or she woke because cuddle cat was on the shelf and not where it ought to be.
Why would kate wash this cat unless it was to remove something? We have children of our own and never washed any of their soft toys - some got pretty grubby!

Couldn’t agree with you more.
Although I do think the media play a large part in this too. And indirectly I suppose we all do too as we discuss the facts/slurs here…

Where can I read the whole blog?
September 30th, 2007 at 9:50 pm
680. Yes Wendy, the logic is none of us know the truth. Not even The Big Stig, Maria or Moderation. Not even the UK Press/Media. Well actually UK media does know some facts but have been warping facts and conjecture because sensationalised stories make better copy than cold hard facts. (Meaning: They can sell a shitload more papers; gain a larger tv/radio audience and attract much more advertising revenue.)
September 30th, 2007 at 9:50 pm
Ian - I wholeheartedly agree with you on the fact that the McCanns should be charged for child neglect. It has been repeatedly said that, had they not left the children unattended, Madeleine would be here today if one is to believe the abduction theory.
I read Gerry’s blog today in its entirety and found it unbelievable that, on his travels after Madeleine’s disappearance, he met so many officials working in the child protection sphere, and from his rambles, it appears he really thought of himself as an equal and as a campaigner for the rights of vulnerable children. Admitting that they had been neglectful parents would be the first step in the right direction but, sadly, he considers himself to be more of a victim than Madeleine and I doubt he will ever stand up and admit that their actions of that night were not exactly parent of the year material.
September 30th, 2007 at 9:49 pm
Watching sky tv’s special on the Madeleine story it is as if there are two parallel universes when you compare what this site says and what they said.
The people called the Tapas 9 on here were only mentioned in passing as ‘they dined with friends’ The main focus appeared to be on the bad job that the local police had done (and it did appear that way)
The falling down stairs sounds very like the case of Kian Williams, age 3.5 who fell down some outside steps at his school and died. The court case was this week and the headmaster was fined for negligence I believe.
September 30th, 2007 at 9:48 pm
660 willo, the suggestion of sexual abuse within the T9 is a dark but necessary step if we really are to “leave no stone unturned”. I myself tried unsuccessfully to air this on the sky news forum. It’s just an idea and I’m not convinced yet. I have heard of children being drugged and then raped. Until the truth is known it has to be considered a possibility even if rather distasteful.
I still think it more likely that the T9 were complicit in the drugging of their children and are just protecting their careers and reputations. Some people (especially people who are supposed to be clever) find it very difficult to admit they made a serious mistake.
But then again ,why blood? Seems to suggest a violent death.

I’d like to believe that the PJ has solid evidence that they are building a case on and not just taking an approach based on strong suspicion. If they are indeed purposely leaking information to the press to pressure the McCanns and thereby loosen up some tongues to release more information to firm up their case, that would be acceptable to me. But if they are unsure about the parents’ involvement in Madeleine’s death, they should not be releasing any of that information to the press, as it is damaging to their personal and professional reputations and cannot be completely undone, even if they are eventually found truly innocent (other than in the aspect of child neglect).
September 30th, 2007 at 9:46 pm
680 Wendy
The syringe was the tyoe that is used to feed medicine, such as calpol, to a baby orally. Not a needle. At least, that’s what we were led to beleive.
The change of story by the police is frankly amazing. They make the McCanns suspects based on the sedation theory. Now they seem to be shifting from sedation to fall. They have a fixation about pinning this crime on the McCanns at all costs.
Like some people on this forum.
September 30th, 2007 at 9:45 pm
672. Big Stig,
Supposedly PJ said this and that and supposedly the nanny said this and that.
You left out the most important gist of your argument which is that nothing you have stated has been confirmed as fact.
September 30th, 2007 at 9:44 pm
634 T.B.
so basically you are a garbage man (you did say you collect things) who once had big dreams of being a solicitor and now you chase tragic stories involving families who lose loved ones so you can set up a big piggy bank for yourself and claim that it is a campaign for justice. Get a life buddy and go collect money someplace else. Retired LOSER!!!
September 30th, 2007 at 9:44 pm
672 Stig.
We dont actually know what the PJ think.
I know some UK policeman and they are highly suspicious of the Mccanns account.
We discussed this and they were always of the opinion that the children were sedated. Tonight we discussed this report - the view was it might be possible that not quite enough was administered to Maddie (as she was a little hyper) who might have woken up, followed the light and sound out the back and fell down the stairs. The Mccanns would realise that they would be accused of neglect with a charge possible because Kate had been saying she was worried about some of the people around the place acting strangely. Whatever happened they are guilty of neglect but this needs proof that they realised there were risks.
September 30th, 2007 at 9:42 pm
Can anyone make logic out of this:
First the police say they found a syringe in the apartment and that MM died of an overdose. Now suddenly, they know she died falling down stairs. And that is without any witnesses or a body to prove it?
September 30th, 2007 at 9:40 pm
674. Chloroform is colourless but has an ethereal sweet odour.
September 30th, 2007 at 9:39 pm
672 I really love this stairs bit - First the PJ hypothesise an overdose of sedatives killing Madeline and now they say she died because she didn’t have enough sedatives. They are so brilliant.
Absolutey agree. The police are focused on convicting the McCanns first and getting to the truth second.

What I am trying to say is that I doubt the latest news from the PJ.
September 30th, 2007 at 9:38 pm
667.
It isn’t surprising that a mysterious email was sent to a royal. Last weekend several Anorak posters predicted that “mysterious” letters/emails would start being sent to the McCanns. I cannot recall if anyone predicted messages being sent to the rich, famous or royals for the McCanns - but this strategy flows with all the other over-the-top McCann-chicanery-ego-centric-narcissistic personality traits.
If HRH really did receive this mystery email message it would be very easy to trace the sender. I’ll believe it as fact when I hear something directly from Scotland Yard. Not saying it isn’t true just that like everything else in this case its verity is questionable.
September 30th, 2007 at 9:37 pm
666 Sly fox - in the event of a sedation overdose, the most likely cause of death would be respiratory depression, ie, you stop breathing. Madeliene would have been cyanosed which means her lips, nails, possibly her face would have had a bluish tinge to them, her pupils fixed and dilated and no evidence of respirations or a heart beat. She could possibly have had convulsions prior to death with a minimal amount of vomit and been incontinent of urine. In the event of a body being found in this state, a toxicology screen would have been carried out.
September 30th, 2007 at 9:36 pm
671 Wendy.
How do we know that - unless one of the contributers here is in the PJ!
Anyone know if its possible to infuse a cuddle cat with anything that might send a child to sleep?
Im trying to work out in my theory why a cuddle cat might need washing. It doesnt fit my theory for it to need washing, why would it need washing (if one parks the iodea of ’smell of death’ for a moment).

You say your main interest in this case is political. It’s mine too. I find it astounding that the British government is so openly protecting and supporting the McCanns and have done so right from the beginning. WHY? They are, ostensibly, just two ordinary leeches from Leicester.
Something is behind all this, there’s something rotten in the state not just in the boot of the car. What is so disturbing is the sustained and deliberate spin, lies and manipulation of the press which must be at the behest of their political spinmeisters. A free press? What a joke! What is the difference then between us in Britain now and Nazi Germany? They twisted, spun, manipulated and censored. They had one law for one and another for someone else. They suppressed all dissent. They lied through their teeth for their own political ends, to hold on to power at all costs.
I think this McCann case runs deep into the soul of Nu Labour. It is a party so riven with dogma and, despite its protestations otherwise, a spurious class consciousness, that it cannot afford - Brown cannot afford - to have these people found guilty. He is big daddy now. Bereaved daddy before. This is the new cuddly, warm, dribble down his coat lapels Gordie who we MUST all want to stay in power for ever. He’s like one of us. Just like us. So are the McCanns - just like us, lovely family, kiddies, family car, package holidays, family, friends…a mirror image of what Britain SHOULD be like (it isn’t). Don’t spoil things for Gordie. Nu Labour is the people’s party, the people’s princess, the people’s McCanns… If they are found guilty, Nu Labour might be finished. I don’t think Gordie will risk it.

The PJ made a big thing about the twins supposedly not waking up, hence their suspicion of sedation. However, in the recent interview with the nanny, she said she was one of the first on the scene, certainly well before the PJ. She said the twins had already been taken out by friends. Didn’t say whether it was out of the apartment altogether or out of the bedroom and plonked on the sofa.
My guess it was out of the apartment altogether - because they woke up. If they hadn’t woken up, why get them out of their beds?
So ho come the PJ mention them not waking when It seems possible they were not in the apartment at that time.
I really love this stairs bit - First the PJ hypothesise an overdose of sedatives killing Madeline and now they say she died because she didn’t have enough sedatives. They are so brilliant.
