Madeleine McCann: The Nanny Suspect, Amaral Policing And Jail
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
SUNDAY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE MYSTERY. BRING IT ON.”
The Sunday Express is not the Express, which has form some weeks led with the front-page banner “MADELEINE”. The Sundays Express goes its own way.
“McCanns remain defiant as they face 40 questions from UK police this week”
“Kate and Gerry’s fury as new sighting in Morocco by businessman is ignored”
SUNDAY MIRROR front page: “MADDIE HUNT: THE TRUTH.”
The truth… At last…
“DISGRACE.”
A picture of Madeleine McCann (on the right). A picture of Portuguese copper Goncarlo Amaral (left).
“Police have ignored 250 sightings of her” – and have investigated how many?
“Cop leading police probe works four hours a day” – Amaral’s not overworked and fresh.
“He has three-hour boozy lunches with pals” – Amaral holds lengthy meetings to discuss and masticate over the case with team.
“Puffing on a cigarette and knocking back beers, the man leading the world’s biggest missing child inquiry enjoys yet another long, boozy lunch.”
Good to know that the Mirror is not wasting its time and watching him.
STAR ON SUNDAY: “THREATS TO McCANNS.”
“Friends say the couple are ‘extremely concerned’ by the nature of the threats and are considering hiring extra security.
Last night a spokeswoman for the McCanns, both 39, confirmed that they had been sent what she described as ‘negative letters and fear mail’.”
INDEPENDENT: “Maddie ‘kidnapped by maid’, says email.”
“The McCanns’ spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, said they were ‘encouraged’ by the development.”
SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: Kate McCann will risk jail to find Madeleine
Kate McCann has been told by her legal team that she faces jail sentence if she flouts Portuguese law to discuss details of the four-year-old’s disappearance in a high-profile television interview.
She tells a “close friend”: “I will do what I must. What does any of it matter if it helps find Madeleine?”
“It is what Kate thinks will help,” a close friend tells the paper. “What choice does she have? Unless Kate and Gerry ignore the law and speak out, their chances of finding Madeleine will dwindle further. Better to risk prison if it helps find her.
“Will the Portuguese police really prosecute a mother whose sole aim is to find her daughter or at least, God forbid, discover the whereabouts of her body? Kate, most of all, believes risking a jail sentence is nothing compared to finding Madeleine.”
Who needs an interview with Kate with friends like that?
THE OBSERVER: “This limbo that lasts a lifetime,” writes Carol Sarler.
“The McCanns are said to be devastated by dashed hopes; if so, they must get used to it, for there will be more sightings, more dashing and, to add to their misery, more harassment of more innocent families. I know this because, having investigated the disappearance of Ben Needham on Kos in 1991, the unfolding of the McCann case has felt like one long, wretched, groundhog summer.
“Ben, recapped in a nutshell: his grandparents, Eddie and Chris Needham, moved from Sheffield to Kos with their teenage son Stephen, daughter Kerry and her boyfriend and their son, Ben…
“…The singular difference between the Needhams and the McCanns is, crudely, class. Eddie has homemade tattoos on his knuckles, Chris was a grandmother at 38, Kerry and her boyfriend - a man known, as they say, to the police - lived in a council block. Perhaps this explains why, throughout their ordeal, nobody from the British consulate in Athens once got off their butt or went to Kos to help or support; surgeon Gerry McCann, by contrast, mobilised the world.”
“Arabic adverts aid Madeleine hunt”… “Despite the disappointment of last week’s misleading sighting of a blonde girl in the Moroccan town of Zaio, the McCanns believe that their daughter might be somewhere in the country.”
TIMES: No Madeleine news today.

If you were at the top of the stairs when your daughter stormed off because she didn’t want to stay in (again) and she fell down the stairs because she was upset and didn’t want to do as she was told then that’s a different but similar scenario. Or…if she fell down the stairs and laid there unconscious in one of those half-hour spells between checking on the kids, it shows a lot of negligence if your 3 yr old was able to do that…then questions would be very difficult to answer if your kid was dead.

Did you read the comment at the foot of the page posted about that article?
“This now makes at least 4 ways she is supposed to have been killed and 3 different places where she is supposed to have been buried. I think the best thing is not to read any more newspaper fairy stories about this tragic case but wait to hear the real news on the radio or TV.”
The last bit made me laugh.

No, I very much doubt they have a body. Considering the McCanns haven’t been charged with anything it would be sick to know you have a body but not reveal it. I can’t remember the cops ever doing that and why would they? If they had a body and couldn’t ID it conclusively, it could be another missing child…they won’t do that.

If Madeleine had fallen down the steps and had presumably been discovered by Kate, why try to cover up an accident? Wouldn’t a doctor’s first reaction be to attempt to resuscitate the child on the spot - and if so, surely someone would have seen something. It doesn’t make sense.

I lack compassion for pointing out that kids get tired from normal holiday activities.
I feel like I am in the twilight zone here. I better go to bed now and re read your stuff in the morning and see if it makes any more sense then.

It sounds like there’s a new batch of forensics due through sometime soon. I’m sure there’s a ton of evidence we don’t know about. I get the feeling they’re just making as good a case as possible given that they may never find a body.
If all this hinges on the McCanns’ arrogance and insistence on abduction but they concocted this whole thing, I hope they rot in jail. Before the Stigs and Co shoot me down in flames, notice I said “IF”.
October 1st, 2007 at 1:31 am
So they have been saying ‘cracked the back or her head’ in more than one article. Do you suppose they have found a body and are just waiting to confirm Maddies DNA.
I mean surely you can’t tell from cleaned up blood splatter on stairs if the ‘back of the head’ was the point of impact. Or if it was hit hard enough to cause a serious injury or death…. Can You???

“my kids have always been on holiday with me since they were babies and never woken up scared, your scenario makes no sense whatsoever.”
You chastise the McCanns - to the point you think they should be legaly sanctioned - because their kids might wake in a strange place and be frightened and then say your kids wouldn’t be under the same circumstances.
You are a scream.
Then you you accuse me of being Ian Huntley. This tag team insulting from you and Paulette, do you work it all out beforehand?

I know. They are like out of a horror movie and I hope they rot in jail. To those that don’t know what we’re talking about, here’s the case:

Well, stranger things have happened. This evening, the abduction theory is starting to look possible to me for the first time in a while.
If Madeleine had died as a result of falling down the steps, secondary to being sedated, the sedation would not have been discovered at the autopsy. If she had woken from the sedation, to have been able to walk down the steps, then the sedation would most likely not have been strong, ie, a narcotic, and would have been an over the counter type of paediatric medicine. Even if this had been discovered at an autopsy, it is not a crime to give your child an antihistimine, anti emetic or cough mixture.
If Madeleine was abducted, then possibly Gerry’s attention seeking narcissistic behaviour was indulged, hence the strange blog and the jet setting lifestyle. Even a narcissistic, seemingly cold blooded father can have their child snatched.
The dreadful moral dilemma - would you rather the world know that your child was missing, possibly dead at the hands of a paedophile because you went out eating and drinking with your friends and left your children alone in an unlocked apartment, or dead because you left your children alone in an unlocked apartment and the child wandered off and died due to falling down some steps? Neither scenario generates public sympathy, or shouldn’t, I should say.
Of course the press coverage of this case is slanted and who knows what to believe at this point. No one knows for sure what the physical evidence is, but the PJ must have something suspicious to make both Gerry and Kate an ‘arguido’. Without a doubt, they were rattled after the intense questioning.
Let’s hope that the truth comes out somehow and Madeleine finally gets justice.

Interesting article. Doesn’t Kate look anorexic by the way?

So much has been said and speculated. I may be wrong but was it reported the McCanns had a book about the law with them at the apartment? No Mills and Boon for them then.

Yes I did read it again. I said you weren’t very sympathetic when I mentioned that someone had impersonated me. Considering that, I said it served you right for being so obnoxious because someone may have impersonated you. What part didn’t you understand?
October 1st, 2007 at 1:18 am
So it was British Police all along who suspected ( and still do ) McCanns of faults and not PJ according to this.

I don’t know if Megan Williams is out of hospital yet. She had to receive surgery to repair the lacerations on her leg. It’s something out of a horror movie. A lot round here are complaining because the FBI and cops aren’t treating it as a hate crime. The reason is simple: a hate crime only carries 10 yrs in jail. Right now all 6 are charged with kidnapping and that carries LIFE!
NC is nice…I spent some time in Asheville and Charlotte a few years ago.

You may think I give you stick so don’t agree with everything you say. On this point, I agree with you. Kids get tired with the sea air and the mere fact of being abroad on holiday. I still think you lack plain compassion though.

I’d buy that…but I think the twins WERE sedated to prevent them witnessing anything.

“You have got to be kidding me!!!
I have not met a mum yet that would agree with you.”
I have children, so I am speaking from experience. My wife agrees with me - but in a way you are right because you have not met her. I have known kids to crash in the afternoon BEFORE bedtime in a hot climate.

then it would have had to be a planned accident.
or murder.
i cant see it.
i think she fell down the steps.

NC and I saw the lovely close knit inbred family group that kidnapped that poor girl. Is she out of the hospital yet?
firestar I’ll try to keep steady but I have had some really nice bruises this past year.

firestar - looking at what we know now, it’s easy to say they couldn’t have done this or that but we’re talking about them covering up a death (if that’s what happened) and being able to think rationally with two other infants around. I’m very suspicious of those reports saying the twins were so out of it they never woke up. I think Madeleine died from some kind of accident but the twins were possibly the only ones sedated - sedated to prevent them witnessing anything.

I know. I’ve always doubted the timeline because there’s too much conflict from everyone who was there. You’d expect some discrepancies but the timeline for that day is messed up. I’m certain the cops know the true timeline but that’s not evidence alone for a conviction.

and i think it would have had to have been put into place that night, not say the next night.
the police would have found it odd the kid’s weren’t at the creche the next morning.
