Madeleine McCann: ‘Bad Dad’ Gerry McCann, The Psychic Barber And Drugs
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “Madeleine was drugged but it was by kidnapper says her grandmother.”
Page 9: “Madeleine’s family: She was drugged…but not by parents.”
Eileen McCann, Gerry’s mother – says: “I really believe they [whoever took her] gave her a drug. There is no way they carried her out of there without her waking. If she was taken when she was sleeping by somebody she did not know, she would have screamed the place down.”
Alternatively, she was taken by someone she did know? Or Mrs McCann is just speculating.
“’BAD DAD’ GERRY” – Carlos Anjos, head of the Portuguese Police Federation, says Gerry, “a heart consultant”, is a “negligent father”. This is his “astonishing rant”.
THE SUN front page: “Mystics hunt for Maddie.”
Around 150 leads provided by mystics have been followed up.
Page 6: “ASK PSYCHIC BARBER TO HELP FIND MADDIE” – Clairvoyant Gordon Smith has been contacted by the family. Smith hosts TV’s Most Haunted show. He says he can tell if Madeleine is alive or dead. Mick is nicknamed “THE PSYCHIC BARBER”.
DAILY MIRROR front page: “McCANNS: SHE WAS DRUGGED.”
Page 5: “‘Madeleine must have been drugged..she would have screamed place down’” – GRANDMOTHER EILEEN McCANN YESTERDAY.”
“Couple call on psychic to help” – Ex-hairdresser Smith is a “wacky medium”.
Says he: “In order for it to work I need to sit with the closest relatives who would be the parents. Then I’d tune in and see what I can pick up. But I would always warn them that there’s a possibility nothing might happen.”
Best to warn them of that first…
DAILY MAIL page 5: “Now police leader mocks ‘negligent’ Gerry McCann over his fears that an abductor was in Maddie’s room.”
“Call for the ‘psychic barber’” – “Despite both being strict Roman Catholics, the couple have already made contact” with Gordon Smith.
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE I’LL FIND BODY IN DAYS. Parents call in psychic.”
Page 7: “MADDIE’S PARENTS CALL FOR PSYCHIC BARBER” – “I have offered my help for free,” says Smith. “I never charge for private readings. I have already assured them I will say nothing to the press.” Indeed, not. Best save it for the book.
DAILY TELEGRAPH page 15: “Police chief accuses McCanns of hindering inquiry” – Carlos Anjos accuses McCanns of using “diversion tactics”.
THE TIMES page 27: “McCanns ‘considering psychic help’”
THE GUARDIAN no Maddie new today.

true
we should know that the papers are trying to sell a story to make cash.
they know which strings to pull with the british public to sell a paper-
in this case everyone wants to here that it isnt the parents and so on.
i hope it isnt too

261 - but you could use the argument the other way.
If the McCanns are intelligent people (aware of the significance of forensic evidence) and they were involved in Madeleine’s death, they would have made sure that all evidence is removed from the appartment. The fact that they found blood near the window suggests that’s not the case.
Personally and taking a factual and objective analysis of the information available so far, it looks very obvious that the McCanns will be charged by the portuguese prosecutor.
It sounds like they have established that the girl died in the appartment (but that in itself does not mean the McCanns were involved or suspects of anything).
Most likely it has also have been established that Madeleine’s body was in the hire car of the McCanns. If that’s the case, they may charge the McCanns with creating the abduction theory and moving the body. But again, that does not constitute evidence that they have killed Madeleine and it should be a light criminal sentence.
The police are now concentrating on finding the body, which would presumanly allow them to charge the McCanns with murder of manslaughter (negligent or intentional) depending on the cause of death.
Just a theory of course.

i’m just wondering what the hell is going on, and why all the secrecy, and why all these rich and powerful people (who must all be very clever and bright to have got to where they are) are all jumping on the bandwagon.
someone, somewhere, not counting the mccanns, has a very big interest in them not being found guilty.
i think the job of people on anorak ought to be to find out who, and why.
October 2nd, 2007 at 2:21 pm
So funny - I was just saying the other day how suprised I was that the Mcons haven’t said an abductor must have sedated Maddie before taking her - lo and behold they issue a statement through Grannie Mcon saying just that….LOL
This is a taster of their answers to evrything the court will throw at them ?
If sedatives are also present in the twins samples what will they say then?
That the abductor was planning to come back and take them too but had to hide Maddie in the Church first?
I agree with the PJ that Gerry is neglegent - lets get them for that - then lets get them for selfishness - arrogance and annoyance factors too - or are none of these things illegal?
What about killing your own child - can they get them for that?

i used to have loads of phd students that were training in research, and some post-doctors doing the same.
it may be say, but it definitely isn’ t true.
you get to be a cardiologist (who, i believe looks at test results, then sends people to a proper doctor)
by being able to afford to go to cardiology school.

I dont think he looks thick, I think he looks spiteful, like someone who could rip your heart out without flinching an eyelid
October 2nd, 2007 at 2:16 pm
Thick people are often the most cunning….

I have to agree
Everyone is only interested in either “virtually hanging” the Mccanns or proving/insisting that they are innocent.
October 2nd, 2007 at 2:15 pm
264 - I agree he looks thick in the photos but you don’t get to be a cardiologist without being bright. Sad but true.
October 2nd, 2007 at 2:14 pm

that’s the sad thing.
the missing child isn’t the issue anymore.

255 - Maura
Only found this place a week or so ago and in that time I have seen plenty of comment about the PJ, UK police, McCann’s, Sky, BBC and so on and so forth.
Surely the real story here is Madeleine

Another thing that bugs me is that the McCann’s are intelligent and educated people
that gerry looks thick as fuck to me.
and if they were that clever, they wouldn’t be in the mess they’re in now.
October 2nd, 2007 at 2:10 pm
257
of course, i may be wrong, perhaps they just needed a walk.
October 2nd, 2007 at 2:09 pm
Maura, why don’t you scrutinise the british police about the Rhys Jones murder and about the daily shootings, and stabbings of children in the street’s of britain (daily) performed in broad daylight and that british police is unable to solve?
Why don’t you scrutinise the role of Clarence Mitchell and some of his chums in making up stories that sell tabs and reinforce the abduction theory?
ANSWER: Because deep down, you really think that British police is better (except Leicestershire police that has been working on the case with the PJ and must therefore have been corrupted infectiously), because you think that the portuguese and spanish police are incompetent and because you think that all Moroccans are child-abductors.
October 2nd, 2007 at 2:09 pm
Another thing that bugs me is that the McCann’s are intelligent and educated people who would be extremely aware of what forensic science can achieve. Why did they compromise the crime scene? Why did she wash the cat knowing the abductor had touched it?
And if you thought your daughter had been abducted just minutes before, what sane mother would abandon her two remaining children while raising the alarm? (or did she scream through the window to the tapas 9??
October 2nd, 2007 at 2:09 pm

well, for a serious answer,
i think it was partly because our dogs seem to be the cruft’s supreme champions of sniffer dog world,
and partly so that the british govt didn’t want to look like it was sat on its collective expensively-suited arse while johnny foreigner made a bollocks of the investigation,
possibly coming up with the conclusion that two white, middle class catholic doctors with an un-catholic like interest in spiritualism had a hand in the naughty stuff.

And while we’re at it lets have a forum for the disgraceful pro McCann stance of the bbc but especially sky news……………

I don’t believe the PJ ever really bought the abduction theory, certainly not after the first 36-72 hours. If correct, that may explain their unwillingness to circulate the ‘picture’ of the ’suspect’ that McCanns eventualy circualted after someone in high places had a word with the Portuguese authorities.
What I find more interesting is when the McCann’s realised that the PJ had given up on the abduction theory. i.e. There was a period of time where the McCann’s incorrectly believed both they and the PJ were singing from the same sheet. which in turn is the period where tensions between the McCann’s and PJ surfaced.
None of the above should be taken to imply that Madeleine was or wasn’t abducted, just an observation about how the relationship between the McCann’s and the PJ developed over time.
October 2nd, 2007 at 2:04 pm
wasnt it after they found flecks of blood on the window / wall of the apartment
October 2nd, 2007 at 2:04 pm
254 firestar - seriously. I read that the portuguese don’t have these dogs that can smell death (??) they only have dogs that can smell dead bodies (not useful). Hence having to ask the brits to bring their pets in.
seriously, what made them think that they should try the dogs, and even more bizarre, why would they send the dogs on to the car that was being used by the McCanns? All these things suggest that even before DNA they already had some questions about the parent’s involvement. We just don’t know what is it that they knew.

It’s not about sitting on the fence, this story has enough angles and all could be covered.
PJ says, McCann’s say, portuguese press say, What we know, Don’t know and so on. Just as juicy and interesting and just as likely to sell newsprint. I know it’s mostly the tabloids but they are starting to look pretty stupid. I wonder if the journalists feel that way.

Mods and admin
Can I ask you why you have never ran a forum based on the Pj response and handling of this case? Is it just me or has there been a continual bias towards the worst things printed by the press about the Mcanns and not once have you introduced a forum to scutinise the PJ?

You want ‘keymaster’ for that, Maura.
October 2nd, 2007 at 1:59 pm
it was because the portuguese dogs were trying to frame them.
October 2nd, 2007 at 1:57 pm
Forgive my ignorance, but coming back to the sequence of events:
It looks like PJs theories are founded mostly on forensic / dna;
Allegedly the DNA traces were found in the appartment after british dogs were brought in to smell death.
Now, there’s a bit I miss here. Why / when did the pj or the british detectives think it was a good idea to bring in these dogs? Surely, the line of investigation was (from the start) focused on abduction, you can’t just wake up one day and say - “let’s have a look and see if the dogs can smell death…”
Does anyone actually know what has made someone call in these dogs?

118 The Real Stig…funnily I did not believe Joanna Lees and never did.
You only think you know they have this massive behind scenes veritable army ++ searching because UK press says so. No evidence of it. It is hearsay, like most of the stuff about this situation.

244. Sedation & Blood
I agree re the media, I’m also shocked that the media can be so easily manipulated and so off target. It would have been better if they had reported the whole McCann saga in a more balanced way and not so obviously taken sides re McCann versus PJ and Portuguese.
If this whole sorry media saga has done anything for me, it’s shown just how much we really cannot believe anything written in the newspapers - will never trust a story again.
In terms of going back to basics, I think it would be good to have a diagram of the apartment and the surrounding area with pinpointers of where it’s been claimed that sniffer dogs picked up scent and reported forensic evidence had been found/gathered.
Techies, nnyone up for that?
