Madeleine McCann: ‘Bad Dad’ Gerry McCann, The Psychic Barber And Drugs
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “Madeleine was drugged but it was by kidnapper says her grandmother.”
Page 9: “Madeleine’s family: She was drugged…but not by parents.”
Eileen McCann, Gerry’s mother – says: “I really believe they [whoever took her] gave her a drug. There is no way they carried her out of there without her waking. If she was taken when she was sleeping by somebody she did not know, she would have screamed the place down.”
Alternatively, she was taken by someone she did know? Or Mrs McCann is just speculating.
“’BAD DAD’ GERRY” – Carlos Anjos, head of the Portuguese Police Federation, says Gerry, “a heart consultant”, is a “negligent father”. This is his “astonishing rant”.
THE SUN front page: “Mystics hunt for Maddie.”
Around 150 leads provided by mystics have been followed up.
Page 6: “ASK PSYCHIC BARBER TO HELP FIND MADDIE” – Clairvoyant Gordon Smith has been contacted by the family. Smith hosts TV’s Most Haunted show. He says he can tell if Madeleine is alive or dead. Mick is nicknamed “THE PSYCHIC BARBER”.
DAILY MIRROR front page: “McCANNS: SHE WAS DRUGGED.”
Page 5: “‘Madeleine must have been drugged..she would have screamed place down’” – GRANDMOTHER EILEEN McCANN YESTERDAY.”
“Couple call on psychic to help” – Ex-hairdresser Smith is a “wacky medium”.
Says he: “In order for it to work I need to sit with the closest relatives who would be the parents. Then I’d tune in and see what I can pick up. But I would always warn them that there’s a possibility nothing might happen.”
Best to warn them of that first…
DAILY MAIL page 5: “Now police leader mocks ‘negligent’ Gerry McCann over his fears that an abductor was in Maddie’s room.”
“Call for the ‘psychic barber’” – “Despite both being strict Roman Catholics, the couple have already made contact” with Gordon Smith.
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE I’LL FIND BODY IN DAYS. Parents call in psychic.”
Page 7: “MADDIE’S PARENTS CALL FOR PSYCHIC BARBER” – “I have offered my help for free,” says Smith. “I never charge for private readings. I have already assured them I will say nothing to the press.” Indeed, not. Best save it for the book.
DAILY TELEGRAPH page 15: “Police chief accuses McCanns of hindering inquiry” – Carlos Anjos accuses McCanns of using “diversion tactics”.
THE TIMES page 27: “McCanns ‘considering psychic help’”
THE GUARDIAN no Maddie new today.

INSUREANDGO somewhere else
They wouldnt cover the theft of my sons mobile on the final day of his holiday in Bulgaria by a pickpocket-wanted all original receipts etc sent by recorded delivery-then refused to proceed as he didnt manage to get a written report from the Bulgarian police(lol)-phone stunned that day by O2 not sufficient. Home insurer NU accepted claim over phone and paid out next day.
I wonder what proof would be required to claim for a missing kid!

Don’tBlink,
Who knows what kind of lies the media are feeding us. I’m just playing armchair detective and that makes the most sense to me.

Ian, the thing you dont’ seem to understand is that there is a BIG difference between a sin of ommission and a sin of commission. You’re absolutely right, the McCanns left their children alone when they should not have done so. If they had not done so, Madeleine might still be with us. THis is bad. Fine, call it a crime. However, this crime is far, far different than the crime of killing your daughter, chopping her up, storing her in a freezer, and burying the body later. These two things are NOT the same kind of guilt. They simply are not. You want to pretend they are, and they aren’t. To my mind, what we are discussing on this forum is NOT whether the McCanns are guilty of negligent parenting — that much is infinitely clear — but whether the McCanns killed their daughter (on purpose or on accident) and covered it up.

I agree that Kate’s yearbook entry is fairly innocuous and doesn’t mean squat. However…at the risk of sounding controversial in here…I hope the “lips” it refers to are facial (well…that guy in Portugal did say they were swingers!).

Excellent! Well said.

564. Sophisticated people can keep a pact. Please reserach the Thomas Ince murder. Another unsolved murder involving very wealthy famous people like Randolph Hearst, Charlie Chaplin, Marion Davies and Ince himself who was a famous old Hollywood director and studio head. If reading bores you then see the movie, ‘The Cat’s Meow’ by Peter Bogdonovich which is about this murder mystery.

Good question. Most postings in here are US or European based. For timings, I guess that 6pm GMT would be good. That coincides with approximately the last time Madeleine was seen by anyone other than her parents (if the high-tea restaurant staff are to be believed).

If I remember rightly, the university year book for that year said that Kate was known as “Hot Lips Healey” and enjoyed drinking.
WOW! A student who liked drinking? OBVIOUSLY a child-killer!! Hang her! Know any other students who like drinking? No, neither do I! But if you ever find any, arrest them at ONCE before they start killing children!
I think those reports were really pathetic. Have you ever actually student read year books?! The entry for Kate was terribly innocent compared with many. In any case, the friends still said how very popular she was. There wasn’t a single nasty comment. Someone said she didn’t have to work as hard as some. I have no idea whether or not that was true. Might have been said by someone less intelligent who had to work even harder to become a doctor. Might be a lie or a daft comment to or by a journalist. Either way, Kate graduated successfully as a doctor and later as a fully qualified anaesthetist. You simply don’t do both of those things without hard work and commitment. Incidentally, she gave up her career as an anaesthetist to be a part-time GP in order to have time to be with her children. Hardly the act of a money-grabbing, cold-hearted woman.

I totally agree that the PR is “making things worse and having the opposite effect”. Totally. I don’t know where it’s coming from but I wish it would stop.
Leave the PJ to make idiots of themselves, as Amaral today, but don’t join in this undignified game.
BUT where are all these leaks coming from?
October 2nd, 2007 at 6:36 pm
Ian — The statement “The McCanns are innocent of any crime” is not a rumor or innuendo. It is a statement of belief. It is not my belief, mind you, but it is nothing more than a statement of belief.
“The dogs found the scent of death in the McCanns hire car” on the other hand, SHOULD be a statement of fact. Instead, it is simply a rumor that h as been endlessly repeated as fact. (It may or may not be a fact. I have no idea. Neither do you.)
October 2nd, 2007 at 6:36 pm
567 - No I am not claiming that a dog that detects a transferred smell is wrong. In such cases they have done their job properly. However where there is a transferred smell, there is no factual evidence, and it is for the police to determine how a dog could find a smell without any factual evidence to support the finding.
However dogs do sometimes act excited for reasons other than detecting a correct scent. While it doesn’t happen often, it does happen, and thats when they make the mistake. Nothing on earth is infalible.
October 2nd, 2007 at 6:35 pm
Krissy -
ALL the evidence is from a leaked source and we really don’t know what ‘real’ evidence the PJ have. And I don’t see them letting us in on the scoop anytime soon.
But the leaked evidence is starting to take shape and make sense in my mind and everytime we get another leak from the PJ it seems to make the picture a bit clearer. IMO.

Tennis cancelled b/c of rain chaps - glad to see we are back with the barking cadaver dogs - the hounds of truth.
Maybe 3 cadaver dogs should be sent in independently and a conviction could be secured if 2 or more barked. A branch of jurisprudence known on the Iberian P. as the canine jury.
October 2nd, 2007 at 6:35 pm
There are increasing numbers of Mccann fans - people who will not discuss logically - even if based on information we know we cannot substantiate.
The Mccanns fans dont even try to discuss logically and without bias.
So, Mccann fans, tell me this, if Madeleine had not been left alone that night whilst their parents went ‘dining’, would we be discssuing her now? Yes or no?
October 2nd, 2007 at 6:34 pm
Aha. Now four words in all CAPS (out of 3 paragraphs) makes me “hysterical.” Who’s the weird one here? The person using a few all caps for emphasis, or the person translating that as “hysteria”? Sounds like the kind of person who would, say, take behavior they dont’ understand and translate it to mean “guilty of murder.”

The reason they say they don’t believe it’s a legitimate lead is because in the course of the investigation, they already followed up on all current and former employees at the resort, which would be a normal thing to do at the very early stage of an investigation of this sort.

I can post more often now. Yippee. I have broadband. Glorious day for this African babe.

568 Anonymous. Some of these things might indeed seem strange to you, but do not seem particularly strange to others. And, most certainly, even if they are “strange” and not quite “right” to my mind or yours, it certainly does not mean they are guilty. People are WEIRD, you know, and respond differently to tragedy/trauma/stress. But you cannot convict someone based on behavior that makes YOU uncomfortable. You ask why the McCanns didn’t go search themselves? A) What makes you think they did not? Were the cameras trained on them at all hours, and did you watch? B) What do you expect them to search? What would be enough for you? If they learned to scuba dive and searched the waters around Praia de Luz? If they knocked on Murat’s door themselves and demanded to see the basement? What, exactly, would constitute a “real” search by the parents to you?
These are YOUR judgments of the SMALL percentage of “Facts” that you know about the case, and are perfectly irrelevant to the McCanns innocence or guilt.

Would not even try..I have in fact never been there….!!!!!
Have you noticed how the rabid pro on here type every 2nd word in CAPS … they are hysterical. Why.? Not as if they know these McCann’s. Nobody, but nobody, gets as hot and bothered and rude as Team Supporters. Bit like Gerry Mc. does in fact.
October 2nd, 2007 at 6:31 pm
573 Krissie - here is more rumour and innuendo, the Mccanns are innocent of any crime (including negligence and failing in their duty of care).
Fillmybucket is a slim lady.
You are not biased.
Dreadful isnt it - all these untruths.
October 2nd, 2007 at 6:31 pm
I do trust the dogs and what they found. I do not trust what the media reports though - so how do we know what the dogs really found if we get our information from the media?

How do YOU know how good the email tipoff was? Email is easily checked for validity. It’s one of the easiest things to check. How do you know it’s not for that reason it won’t be looked into? You don’t, so don’t say ‘no wonder the McCanns feel stitched up’.
They’ve already stitched themselves up by failing to answer simple questions.

How do explain the smell of death in the McCann’s apartment at the resort, on the stairs outside of it, on Cuddlecat, and on Kate’s clothes? Do you really think Kate’s dealing with corpses before going on holiday satisfactorily explains that away?
The dogs were also taken to other apartments in the resort and were very calm and did not alert to anything unusual–only to the McCann’s apartment.
The history of that apartment has been checked with management and there is no record of anyone having died there before the McCanns rented it.
October 2nd, 2007 at 6:27 pm
561 - Please state the official source of these facts. A dog does not distinguish between the smell of death for one person and the smell of death for another because for logical reasons, what would be a personal smell in life, becomes a common smell in death due to decomposition.

Since when have you heard anybody speak on this forum?
October 2nd, 2007 at 6:26 pm
Maria, is your surname Mccann?
Why dont you provide some insight - logical and based on information we have available. All you seem to do is make defensive unsubstantiated statements.
Admit that we do not know if they are guilty of anything more than negligence OR NOT. They might be! I accept that perhaps they are not. Suggestions that they may be complicit in her not bein in their care anymore are not at all ludicrous or ridiculous.
One fact remains, Madeleine is missing and it is their fault. If they had not been ‘dining’ far enough away not to be able to see the entrances to the apartment where their children were abandoned, then Madeleine would not be known to any of us - now would she?
