Madeleine McCann: ‘Bad Dad’ Gerry McCann, The Psychic Barber And Drugs
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “Madeleine was drugged but it was by kidnapper says her grandmother.”
Page 9: “Madeleine’s family: She was drugged…but not by parents.”
Eileen McCann, Gerry’s mother – says: “I really believe they [whoever took her] gave her a drug. There is no way they carried her out of there without her waking. If she was taken when she was sleeping by somebody she did not know, she would have screamed the place down.”
Alternatively, she was taken by someone she did know? Or Mrs McCann is just speculating.
“’BAD DAD’ GERRY” – Carlos Anjos, head of the Portuguese Police Federation, says Gerry, “a heart consultant”, is a “negligent father”. This is his “astonishing rant”.
THE SUN front page: “Mystics hunt for Maddie.”
Around 150 leads provided by mystics have been followed up.
Page 6: “ASK PSYCHIC BARBER TO HELP FIND MADDIE” – Clairvoyant Gordon Smith has been contacted by the family. Smith hosts TV’s Most Haunted show. He says he can tell if Madeleine is alive or dead. Mick is nicknamed “THE PSYCHIC BARBER”.
DAILY MIRROR front page: “McCANNS: SHE WAS DRUGGED.”
Page 5: “‘Madeleine must have been drugged..she would have screamed place down’” – GRANDMOTHER EILEEN McCANN YESTERDAY.”
“Couple call on psychic to help” – Ex-hairdresser Smith is a “wacky medium”.
Says he: “In order for it to work I need to sit with the closest relatives who would be the parents. Then I’d tune in and see what I can pick up. But I would always warn them that there’s a possibility nothing might happen.”
Best to warn them of that first…
DAILY MAIL page 5: “Now police leader mocks ‘negligent’ Gerry McCann over his fears that an abductor was in Maddie’s room.”
“Call for the ‘psychic barber’” – “Despite both being strict Roman Catholics, the couple have already made contact” with Gordon Smith.
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE I’LL FIND BODY IN DAYS. Parents call in psychic.”
Page 7: “MADDIE’S PARENTS CALL FOR PSYCHIC BARBER” – “I have offered my help for free,” says Smith. “I never charge for private readings. I have already assured them I will say nothing to the press.” Indeed, not. Best save it for the book.
DAILY TELEGRAPH page 15: “Police chief accuses McCanns of hindering inquiry” – Carlos Anjos accuses McCanns of using “diversion tactics”.
THE TIMES page 27: “McCanns ‘considering psychic help’”
THE GUARDIAN no Maddie new today.

(705). “Amaral is swarthy skinned; drinks delicious wine; probably has a mistress and likes to make love in the afternoon; he says how he feels without shame or fear; he eats sumptuous nourishing food; he was raised by parents who loved him and brought him and his adorable siblings with them when they went out socialising.
Of course the British hate him.”
Exactemento!

745 - Yeah, bound to be a few old wire coat hangars around in the Algarve. Apparently, that’s all you need. As I said yesterday, any real psychic would find Maddy and claim the reward. Of course, real psychics would also win the lottery every week, not to mention the Grand National.
Are the McCanns/Team McCann themselves spreading this crap or is it the tabloids entirely on their own?

487 Dont blink,
Such a scenario is, I think, possible, but very unlikely.
Suppose you’re driving down the higway and a small stone shatters your windscreen. This could be
(i) a loose chipping thrown up by a passing car
(ii) a small asteroid falling from space.
(i) is overwhelmingly more likely, (ii) is still (however remotely) possible.
Statistics alone are unreliable, DNA evidence alone is uncertain, sniffer dogs alone are unreliable, impressions that the McCanns are lying and evasive are just that, impressions.
But the weight of all this taken together convinces me.

Yes, grandchildren of Old England… and , even worse, grandchildren of Old Germany. There’s an awful lot of that Germanic severity in the Midwest. Ick. I live in a region that is not very Anglo, though, much more brown, and we like boozy, sweaty investigators, for sure.

749. Only one John this evening? Or will you be leaving us again for another 30 McCann minutes?
October 2nd, 2007 at 7:57 pm
I like the posts about the guilty people acting so “guilty” not showing emotion etc. Are there any cases of the guilty, looking innocent and acting normal, and the normal innocent people acting guilty?
The last case would be most interesting.

746. I did notice a faint smell of very greasy fish and chips? Or was that my imagination running away with me?
October 2nd, 2007 at 7:55 pm
maybe some of the plonkers who were fooled into contributing to the find maddie fund but now realise their mistake could claim a refund through “paypal” and put their money to better use now. What do you all think?
October 2nd, 2007 at 7:55 pm
712 - creepy!!! Going to dig around that site a little.
716 - fascinating!!!

Ha Ha Chief Inspector Goncalo Amaral gets the sack, and what a sack of shit he was.
October 2nd, 2007 at 7:55 pm
Ian- so in that case you are actually with me, t hen, when I say there are really only two (reasonable, sensible) possibilities here: A) Abduction (due of course to Madeleine’s being sedated and The McCanns being negligent), or B) accidental overdose (without the participation of Friends)? So why are we arguing, then? I would not object to the McCanns ultimlately being prosecuted for criminal neglect. Although if A) is true, they have been punished enough already, in my opinion. If A) is true I cannot imagine their suffering.

Anti-bacterial stuff is for ignorant people. It does nothing more than to eventually breakdown the bodies own excellent immune system. And is very harmful to the environment. Your much better quaffing rioja and smoking an occassional cigarette .
I’m all for gruffy sleuths. I like Peter Falk, Humphrey Bogart, Johnny Depp messy lovable world weary types. Although, William Powell’s sophisticated ‘Thin Man’ was really nice too. And I loved Guy Pearce’s idealistic intelligent detective in LA Confidential.
So yes I agree! The Americans wouldn’t trust him anyway. Well specifically the Anglo-Americans would not like him but they are afterall children of the grand old England.

Amaral, Mrs Cipriano and the British Press:
Funny (quite funny) how the British Press always includes a photo of black-eyed Mrs Cipriano in every article about the “Joana” case.
Especially funny since that photo was taken several months into Mrs Cipriano’s incarceration, and released to the public after she weepily called a tv-station to report that the other inmates had beaten her senseless.
Subtle (very subtle) how the British Press always neglect to share that bitsy fact with us, and let us assume that the black eyes were a little “gift” from Amaral.
If I were Amaral, I’d be pretty “outraged”, by now, as well.
And since I’m in a giving mood, here’s a teensy thought: is it just me, or does Maura remind anyone else of Philomena?

Perhaps we should all go to Praia with dowsing rods. That’ll be next on the official agenda - after the psychic fails to locate Madeleine.
742 - yes, that fund would top it today I’m sure.

Kate’s total lack of any real, true emotions in 5 months is a giveaway. The only possible explanation is she’s drugged up on antidepressants. Sure, Gerry’s voice quaked one time when he spoke as they landed at EMA, but neither of them have shed a tear or had a quivery lip or chin. Neither are professional actors so my conclusion is that they’re not emotional because they had something to do with the disappearance and it isn’t going to be pleasant…hence their ease of not showing any emotions.

Mother goose, as a matter of fact, NO, I am not on drugs. Why would you ask? I do sometimes partake of a bit of red wine in the evenings; however, here in the USA, it is far too early for tippling.
October 2nd, 2007 at 7:50 pm
731 - That fund might actually top the pro-McCann fund.
October 2nd, 2007 at 7:49 pm
Maybe Team McCann is hiring more “side kicks”, not “psychics”.

You genius!
I’ll be the second to contribute.
Tony Bennett is a solicitor - Tony…any ideas?
October 2nd, 2007 at 7:47 pm
Well, it appears it is the truth, then. This is really interesting. I would bet it’s not really related to the Madeleine case directly but to all the ruckus over his alleged beating of the other mom (the one who’s in prison for killing her daughter).. Probably the Madeleine case was bringing too much attention to THAT ugly story (whether it’s true or not) and therefore they had to do some damage control.

“(…) the only time it looked like Kate was going to cry.”
What on earth has crying in public got to do with anything? And if it’s important to cry, why don’t you worry about not seeing Gerry cry either?
It’s fantastic how you can “know” what the parents would be doing if you were in their shoes.
I don’t know if the parents are guilty or not. But crocodile tears in public wouldn’t alter my hesitation.

I know. Employers who are deliberating over how to fire someone do that all the time.
But like all police - they always take care of their own don’t they? The headline says “sacked” but of course he’s only been demoted. Considering the charges against him I’d say he thinks he’s got a result.
I wouldn’t put it past him beating someone up though. He reminds me of Jack Regan in the Sweeney….only the Portuguese equivalent.

720 anonymous. Nice one! I completely agree.
The (anglo version) of Americans would hate him too. He’s too , I dunno, SWEATY. He’s not sterile enough for our liking. I bet he NEVER uses anti-bacterial hand wash.

I think his comments about the British police were probably a convenient excuse to remove him in view of the other matter.

I think the McCann team are afraid of spending it too quick because it’s not exactly getting topped up is it? It’s surprising how public opinion has shifted against them so quickly such that the money input has almost dropped off to nil.
I wonder how easy it would be to organise another Madeleine balloon race in the UK now?

721. Very interesting
October 2nd, 2007 at 7:42 pm
just wondering everybody this may seem a bit of a strange post but please bear with me. Does anybody know if it would be possible to set up a fund for kate and gerry. well similar to the find maddie fund. basically could a fund be set up guarantee the mccanns get prosecuted to the full extent of the law ie: get them charged with minimum of child neglect and manslaughter as it seems less and less likely to me that there is ever going to be any kind of prosecution and the more crap the mccann clann come out with the more i believe these vile creatures are guilty and are going to get away with it. if it is possible to do this i would be the first to contribute.
