Madeleine McCann: Amaral Policing, Secrets Out And EastEnders
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE: PORTUGUESE POLICE CHIEF IS SACKED AFTER AMAZING OUTBURST.”
Page 9: “Madeleine detective kicked off case after blasting British police” – Chief inspector Goncalo Amaral says: “The British police have only been working on what the McCann couple want them to and what suits them.”
Says Amaral: “The Ocean Club is in Praia da Luz, not in London…It won’t be an email, and an anonymous one at that, which will distract our line of investigation.”
Mr Amaral is making reference to the email sent to the official website of the Prince of Wales last week claming a vengeful nanny had abducted Madeleine.
Pages 30 and 31: “HAIR-RAISING TRUTH ABOUT THE PSYCHIC BARBER – During the day Gordon Smith cuts hair, at night he claims he communes with the spirits. So does he really think he can help the McCanns find Madeleine?”
THE WORLD’S GREATEST NEWSPAPER confirms that former EastEnders actress Michelle Collins is a “BELIEVER”.
DAILY MAIL page 7: “Off the case. Madeleine police chief demoted after amazing rant against McCanns and British detectives”
Say Amaral: “They [the English] have been investigating tip-offs and information created and worked upon by the McCanns”
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE: CHIEF COP SACKED.”
Page 10: “INSPECTOR CLUELESS GETS THE BOOT”
Page 11: “If Maddie IS dead she will tell me where he body is” – Says Gordon Smith
DAILY MIRROR front page: “Maddy copper is axed”
Page 7: “OFF THE CASE – Boozy cop is demoted after furious outburst against the McCanns”
THE SUN page 7: “MADDIE COP FIRED FOR McCANNS RANT – storm as bungler says family duped Brit police”
Comments Clarence Mitchell: “I can confirm that Kate and Gerry are aware of this development but we cannot comment”
THE GUARDIAN page 7: “Detective leading hunt for Madeleine sacked after blast at UK police” – Mr Amaral is 47. He has been demoted. He is 48 in the Sun. Such are the facts
Carols Pinto de Abreu, the McCanns’ Portuguese lawyer, says: “The McCanns cannot confess to something they did not do and cannot and should not lie to please the police”
THE INDEPENDENT page 8: “Detective leading Madeleine hunt dropped from case after outburst” – Amaral is being investigated over an alleged attack on the mother of a different missing girl. Read about that here
THE TIMES front page: “Detective in charge of McCann case sacked”
Page 9: “Madeleine detective sacked after outburst”
Alipio Ribeiro, Amaral’s boss, says: “The police should be discreet and keep quiet, but there is always someone who talks” – So much for those secrecy laws
DAILY TELEGRAPH page 15: “Madeleine inquiry chief sacked after attack on British police”
A “family friend” of the McCanns says: “What he [Mr Amaral] is saying is just plain wrong. Leicestershire Police are not doing anything on Kate and Gerry’s behalf. They are simply there for liaison. There is certainly no strategy to distract form the Portuguese investigation”
What investigation?

Spudgun.
I agree. I also feel that this case will never be heard in a court and that answers will not be forthcoming. Somebody, somewhere along the line should have questioned why so many political and rich people attached themselves to the McCanns but no one has. The reporting on this has been truly awful and incredibly xenophobic and I hope that once the story has disappeared that questions will be asked of the media, but I won’t hold my breath.

On the contrary my friend. I make sure I pop in every time I have a few minutes to spare. To be honest, I’m growing pretty disconsolate about the whole affair. I know enough people on both sides of the respective Judiciaries, and they have been telling me since mid May that political pressure was being brought to bear on this case. God knows why. Of course, if you buy into all the wonderful conspiracy theories around you can pick from Jewish supremece, Catholic secret orders, Masonic Rituals and even some strange garbage about McCanns alleged involvement with Nuclear influencing and lobbying!! I’m not even sure the McCanns DID play a hand in Madeleine’s demise, although given the ‘evidence’ you have to strongly suspect it. No, what gives me the hump is the obvious media bias. With very few exceptions, the British media has worked along a solid, rigid thread. Poor Kate and Gerry, lousy useless Clueless Porto Plod!! Given that it is the BRITISH involvement that has raised the suspicions around the McCanns, just confuses me further on this issue. It was the British Cadaver dogs and their British handlers that started alarm bells ringing. It was British Forensics that analysed DNA samples, and British detectives that suggested that maddy fell down the stairs and died.

MISS TAKE 1051
Hello there. My reaction to this is the same as it has always been. There have been a few commentators that have questioned Gordon Brown’s unusual and integral involvement in this, and I believe that his department was the one that strongly suggested to the Team McCann that the ‘Press Camapign’ be wound down somewhat. I also think that, as would be normal in a case like this, there are those pro-Labour supporters, movers and shakers who may be a little alarmed at Gordon’s obvious support of the McCanns, in case at some stage of the proceedsMr & Mrs McCann are shown to have not only been a little economical with the truth, but also a little outrageous in the direction that they took subsequent to Maddies demise. But then again, I have said for over 3 Months that the McCanns will avoid any charges or trial, and given that Goncalo Amaral has been given the boot for suggesting that the McCanns are influencing the daily running of the investigation, and have the BRITISH police running round at the behest of Clarence Mitchell, (as IF), then Ieven MORE convinced that the delightful couple arehome and dry.Whether Guilty or Innocent, we will never know, because they are unlikely to ever have to answer those questions that they avoided in the first place.

1111- as a longtime journalist, I agree completely. a lot of the problem is the major corporations that own ALL the media outlets. it’s crazy. there’s no independent, free-thinking journalism anymore. The Internet is also changing journalism , obviously, and it will be interesting in the long term to see what happens. Although the journalists are all crap t hese days, the Internet sure makes it easy for people who care to find out good information.

The way journalists are trained has gone downhill. It used to be a respected career path but in the last 15-20 years the basic requirement seems to be sales skills, an ability to sift through the press releases, and how to interpret stories spun by a thousand press releases every day.
Newspapers simply do not have the cash to pay for investigative journalism anymore, unless it is high interest and will sell massive amounts of newspapers. There are thousands of small stories of corruption and misuse of power untold in this country that go unreported due to lack of interest. This includes many stories of missing children and adults. It simply isn’t of any interest to the majority of people any more to find out these things and newspapers have to sell to make money.
The Madeleine Mccann story is very distracting but indicative of the way journalism is going. As far as I am concerned it is at the moment a ’story’ as there are no hard facts or evidence beyond the obvious. There is a slight public service element to it as obviously we are all supposed to ‘help’ find Madeleine, but the reality is that it is just another spectacle to amuse the tabloid buying public. So who is at fault - the journalists who write the stories, the people that buy the papers ?
It all feeds itself until you cut off the supply and that will only happen when either pople stop caring or the press releases stop and the story ‘dies’. I don’t believe it is in the interests of the parents to let the story die so they have to do what they have to, however, we can choose to listen or ignore it - thats OUR decision and not theirs
