He also sought to explain yesterday why sniffer dogs — trained to detect the “smell of death” — allegedly became so excited when shown the boot of the car.
“Kate and Gerry had to transport all their rubbish to a communal rubbish dump half a mile away,” the friend said.
“There was a regular run with the boot of the car being full of rubbish including bags of rotting fruit, rotting meat and soiled nappies belonging to the twins.”
The friend said the dogs would have been confused by the mix of smells. It is understood new DNA tests are being carried out by the Forensic Science Services in Birmingham and results could be passed to Portuguese authorities this week.
It was alleged that police in the Algarve believe the house in Rothley could hold the key to Madeleine’s whereabouts.
The Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha claimed a request to search it has been approved by the investigating judge Pedro Daniel dos Anjos Frias. Yesterday, it was claimed that fresh searches could take place in Spain after a request from Portuguese police.

Will, there are dumpster bins in Portugal and you take your rubbish to the dumpster. There is no house to house collection… sometimes the dumpsters are overflowing by lunchtime because there aren’t enough of them and the most hygienic way of handling it (in that heat) is to take it to the municipal tip. There are a lot of stray dogs also and if people dump their rubbish on the ground around the dumpsters the strays rip everything open.
Did they do that? I don’t know… but I can see how gunge from the skinny bags could leak….. leaky raw Meat? Yuk.. I’m a vegetarian!

Sunny 289 - if there’s a big paedophile ring in portugal now re-opened (???), why would they go and look for children in a relatively empty tourist resort in a small town of the algarve ? easier in a city like lisbon, porto etc.
Give me one example of a paedo that broke into a flat to abduct a child and then walked away with that child (as the egg-face theory of the McCanns friends suggests)/
sorry - paedophile ring theory - of all the theories that I heard in this forum is the least likely (in my opinion).
Even assuming that she was abducted, I just can’t believe on the paedo link.

Believe it or not, but I am not certain there is no Involvement of the parents in this. I fully acknowledge something might turn up that turns the whole thing around. But looking at everything, I see nothing to make me disbelieve their story.
My position is that I look at how they are being treated, imagine myself in their position and then think how I would like to be treated were I in their place. So I endeavour to treat them as I would hope others would treat me. Old fashioned concept I know, but there you have it.
I also lived through the Lindy Chamberlain case in Oz. The parallels to what is happening now are spooky. I had hoped people would have learned something from that tragedy, but unfortunately they don’t seem to have for the most part.

Amanda I disagree that they would have taken all three. I have never heard of a paedophile taking more than one child in an abduction. Also one person could not possibly carry out all three children. And even if there were two abductors you look very conspicious as you trod off down the road holding three children.

I actually doubt that the paedophile ring that was supposedly closed down in Portugal hasn’t reopened using other means. Just look at the Tomothy Cox from England who took over a site as the son of god when the initial guy that ran it was arrested. And apparently after Cox was subsequently arrested it wasn’t long before someone else tried to pick up where Cox left off (there was a big article on it in the Guardian supplement about a month ago). These sick men will keep finding loopholes in the system and ways of protecting themselves. I once read that leaders of child porn rings prefer to have high officials/celebreties and professionals involved because then it is harder for the police to bust them. So the big paedophile ring using the orphanage in Portugal may have seen some arrests, but what happens to all the others who used it, where do they go now. The problem won’t go away, someone else will find a way for it to continue, especially if high officials were involved as these guys always seem to think they are above the law.
Anyone one this site whether you are pro or anti mccann can not in all honesty defend Amaral. This guy is an arguido in a previous missing child’s case. He is being investigated for torture and falsifying documents. Who in their right mind can defend this guy and as someone mentioned earlier call him passionate. Give me a break, once he was made an arguido he should have been suspended. I really doubt a British police officer would be allowed to work under those circumstances. It is a complete an utter farce. I agree with Moderation that a completely new team should be appointed on both sides because there will still be tension there and distrust even if this bozo is off the case.

I think Maura is just being contentious. I bet she/he runs their entire life on that basis. It is a way of getting attention for people who would otherwise be overlooked. If you say it is black, she/he will say it is white. If you ignore her/his postings, you will be able to have a proper debate AND have the satifaction of knowing how annoyed she/he will be.

We are in agreement Peter, but unfortunately “semantics” does not help in a legal environment. To take action against the McCanns the authorities would need to demonstrate that they were intentionally negligent. By virtue of being shabby parents, legally they could not be taken to task.

I know people in Medicine Sans Frontier and Red Cross and other children’s charities and all express the same more or less viewpoint.( I used to work for children’s charity here in UK )
You are deliberately misreading what they mean…. What they mean : They cannot concentrate only on this ONE child, when millions are “missing”, and ALL are equally important, but do not have this hysterical media hype.
