MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE: PORTUGUESE POLICE CHIEF IS SACKED AFTER AMAZING OUTBURST.”
Page 9: “Madeleine detective kicked off case after blasting British police” – Chief inspector Goncalo Amaral says: “The British police have only been working on what the McCann couple want them to and what suits them.”
Says Amaral: “The Ocean Club is in Praia da Luz, not in London…It won’t be an email, and an anonymous one at that, which will distract our line of investigation.”
Mr Amaral is making reference to the email sent to the official website of the Prince of Wales last week claming a vengeful nanny had abducted Madeleine.
Pages 30 and 31: “HAIR-RAISING TRUTH ABOUT THE PSYCHIC BARBER – During the day Gordon Smith cuts hair, at night he claims he communes with the spirits. So does he really think he can help the McCanns find Madeleine?”
THE WORLD’S GREATEST NEWSPAPER confirms that former EastEnders actress Michelle Collins is a “BELIEVER”.
DAILY MAIL page 7: “Off the case. Madeleine police chief demoted after amazing rant against McCanns and British detectives”
Say Amaral: “They [the English] have been investigating tip-offs and information created and worked upon by the McCanns”
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE: CHIEF COP SACKED.”
Page 10: “INSPECTOR CLUELESS GETS THE BOOT”
Page 11: “If Maddie IS dead she will tell me where he body is” – Says Gordon Smith

Page 7: “OFF THE CASE – Boozy cop is demoted after furious outburst against the McCanns”
THE SUN page 7: “MADDIE COP FIRED FOR McCANNS RANT – storm as bungler says family duped Brit police”
Comments Clarence Mitchell: “I can confirm that Kate and Gerry are aware of this development but we cannot comment”
THE GUARDIAN page 7: “Detective leading hunt for Madeleine sacked after blast at UK police” – Mr Amaral is 47. He has been demoted. He is 48 in the Sun. Such are the facts
Carols Pinto de Abreu, the McCanns’ Portuguese lawyer, says: “The McCanns cannot confess to something they did not do and cannot and should not lie to please the police”
THE INDEPENDENT page 8: “Detective leading Madeleine hunt dropped from case after outburst” – Amaral is being investigated over an alleged attack on the mother of a different missing girl. Read about that here
THE TIMES front page: “Detective in charge of McCann case sacked”
Page 9: “Madeleine detective sacked after outburst”
Alipio Ribeiro, Amaral’s boss, says: “The police should be discreet and keep quiet, but there is always someone who talks” – So much for those secrecy laws
DAILY TELEGRAPH page 15: “Madeleine inquiry chief sacked after attack on British police”
A “family friend” of the McCanns says: “What he [Mr Amaral] is saying is just plain wrong. Leicestershire Police are not doing anything on Kate and Gerry’s behalf. They are simply there for liaison. There is certainly no strategy to distract form the Portuguese investigation”
What investigation?

I wouldn’t have a clue about all that as I do not make it a habit to follow such cases in detail so I am not fit to comment.
However, as a reply to my post the tone strikes me as somewhat hysterical, it does nothing to address the apparent bruising on Ciprianos trunk, which was the issue of my post.

It isn’t PC to use the word retarded where?
Timothy Evans was mentally retarded and Reginald Christie exploited that to shift blame.
If you think the word “retarded” is outdated or not PC, you’re mistaken. Here is a quote from the Fragile X website:
(FXS), the most common cause of inherited mental impairment. This impairment can range from learning disabilities to more severe cognitive or intellectual disabilities. (Sometimes referred to as mental retardation.) FXS is the most common known cause of autism or “autistic-like” behaviors.

35 - If you are american could you please answer me a question? Do forensic officers in Miami really get to drive around in Hummers as in CSI Miami?
No Will. That’s only on TV.
You like David Caruso over here don’t you? LOL. He doesn’t move much on the show in case you hadn’t noticed. He has about 5 different stances. He was on Letterman, revealing them for us.
1. Puts glasses on, pushes back hair
2. Tilts sunglasses over the nose and looks up at facing person
3. Turns head and body at 45 degree angle, head tilted and stares
4. Folds arms across chest, touches nose with index fingers, reveals slight smile.
5. Places both hands in pants pocket.Looks at the ground, mumbles “I doubt it”
Back to #1.
That’s it!! Very small gestures, limited movements and a few buzz words. Presto - you’ve got a hit TV show around the world! Of course the South Beach backdrop is also pulls in a big crowd. Cool, hip, and laid back just like the guys on the show. It’s the Miami Vice of the 31st century. Personally, I liked MV much more.

‘If’ these dogs can’t detect the difference between dead human flesh and that of a dead rodent/bird/pork chop … then they are of no use what so ever.
‘If’ the ’smell of death’ is transferable, everyone will (eventually) smell of death.
or are some people just guessing these ‘facts’?
… And on that bombshell.

That reads like a manufacturers glowing description of the wonderful product they want you to buy.
Maybe the dog did smell something - as judge dread pointed out yesterday, scents are transferable and it was hire car so maybe the local undertaker hired the car or was a passenger in it at some point.
Unless you hand Eddie the wonder dog over to an independent and trustworthy expert for an independent confirmation of his claimed infallibility - without his handler being present - I reserve the right to remain unconvinced that he is infallible.
A dog going woof is not proof, it is an indication to look further, if that investigation proves inconclusive or negative, turning back to the woof and saying ‘that should be enough to satisfy anyone’ is not on IMO.
I am not trying to say Eddie isn’t highly reliable and accurate most of the time, I am saying I doubt he is infallible.

Totally agree Stig. That’s what police & sniffer dog handlers have said themselves.

‘Let’s Get Out There And Find Madeleine’
Are the McCanns going to fly back to Portugal and help with the search? Are they going to fly to Morroco and follow up some of the sightings? Are they going to do anything other than sit at home and talk about spending money on shopping trollys, billboards and posters?
Are they f**k. The “US” in the headline refers to the Portuguese Police. The same Portuguese Police that the McCanns have let their family and friends taunt and slander in the press since day one of Madeleine’s disappearance. The same force they have so much faith in that the McCanns have brought in their own investigation team.
So it’s not a case of Let US Get Out There And Find Madeleine, rather a case of let them get out there while we stay in the UK and moan about not being able to appear on US talk shows or how innocent we are.

The only reason why the chief investigator was sacked is because the McCann’s have four or is it five lawyers who pounce on every statement made by the police.
It is obvious that if you get enough high paid lawyers, they can obstruct the direction of an investigation.
The sacking of the police chief may make the lawyers feel momentarily successful, and as much as they are being paid they need to declare some kind of success somewhere, but the public will deeply resent the intrusion of the McCann’s lawyers into the police investigation.

Any policeman is open to being accused of something because they deal with criminals as part of their job. If you suspended every policeman because of some accusation, half wouldn’t be working. You are entitled to think they should ALL be suspended but what you’re saying is totally impractical.
Gerry and/or Kate should be back at work. What’s stopping them? Other parents of missing children do. Are Rhys’ parents off work with some fund paying for their loaves of bread? I don’t think so.
Gerry didn’t commit malpractice - you’re right. But they are suspects of a missing child/manslaughter/murder case. That is most likely worse than Amarals case. He may or may not have beaten that woman but that’s the worse it can be - beaten. Gerry and/or Kate may or may not have killed their daughter - that is a far worse charge so I think they should be suspended from work based on your argument.

Elliot - I will too.
They found her daughter’s blood in her fridge! She didn’t report her missing for two days. She could not identify her attackers in a line up. Her brother confessed on tape. She probably got beat up in jail and is using the Madeleine publicity to cry wolf. Besides if PJ were going to beat her up I’m sure they would have gone with body punches.
************************************************************
Her brother was also beaten before his *confession* which he also later retracted.
The police in that case as with the McCann case, failed to seal off the scene for two days after they arrived, during which time family, press & police tramped through the house.
They had no evidence & no leads & suddenly decided that the mother & brother were having an affair, that the family chopped up the child’s body & fed it to the pigs. All this without *one shred* of evidence. There is actually no evidence that the girl is even dead. The mother’s sentence relies soley on her so-called “confession” which it is now clear is unsafe. And some dodgy forensics which claim her ‘blood’ was in the fridge.
A Portuguese lawyer wrote a piece for a British broad-sheet explaining how the police work in Portugal: they are more concerned with being seen to “solve” crimes rather than get to the truth - so if an answer is not forthcoming - they discredit the family of the victim/victims to get an end to a case.
The fact is that 3 police officers have been *charged* with Cipriano’s beating/torture, 1 with falsifying evidence, and 1 (Amaral) with attempted cover-up.
I don’t see how you could end up with two black eyes from “falling down the stairs at a police station”.

Oh…you may like to know that Ian Huntley never did confess to killing Jessica and Holly…read the trial. Huntley MUST be innocent.
Add to that Reginald Christie in Rillington Place….remember the poor retarded Welsh guy that hung on Christie’s testimony?
And Myra Hindley and Ian Brady never could remember where the hid those bodies.
Hmmmm what about those poor 12 year olds that kidnapped James Bulger and were tried in an adult court? Oh that’s right, a lady judge thought that was inhumane and decided a miscarriage of justice had occurred so she set them free with new identities.
I know…they’re ALL INNOCENT!!! We don’t need jails anymore.
October 3rd, 2007 at 2:20 pm
Stevo,
yes any police officer who has corruption charges against him regarding a previous missing child’s case should be suspended until a conclusion. Of course he has the right to defend himself but until the trail comes to an end he should be suspended. A Police officer is suppose to uphold the law and protect citizens against crime so if he himself has been charged with a criminal offence, I would not want him on any cases until he proves his innocence.
You can not make a parallel example with regards to the McCanns. A parallel example could only be made if Gerry was charged with malpractise in his job as a doctor.

Paedophile networks are usually made of several gangs of criminals, and there are always one or two criminals who knows someone from another gang. Somehow, it is a mistake to talk about “paedophile network”, because child exploitation is now part of ordinary criminality linked to prostitution.
At the start, children abused where those of the orphanages, psychiatric hospitals, homes for adolescent who misbehave… either where they are guaranteed not to have problems with the parents, or that the children would not be believed. It required a staff ready to close its eyes, doctors that would not pretend to notice any abuse, judges ready to say children where liars when they grew old enough to complain, police who close the cases without inquiry, etc.
Then came a request for more and more sadistic stuff, pictures and snuff movies. It required kidnapping and “disappearances”, because the traces are too visible. The job was more dangerous, so it was more expensive and it requested the means to pay for it. The criminals where all assured to have the protection of the “clients”.
These networks are made at several levels: the hunters, the kidnappers, the producers of child pornography or snuff movie, the clients and the corrupted officials. Some do it by vice, others to be assured a good carrier, others in exchange of closed eyes on another corruption. That is how there is also a surprising number of women involved.
This leads to a situation described by UN, as such serious denial of justice for children victims of child abuse and those who tempt to protect them, that they advised an independent body to treat the cases.

October 3rd, 2007 at 2:16 pm
355. Who knows what any of us would be capable of placed under the kind of pressure that you would experience if your job was to save lives, but you accidentally killed your child. Once you begin to lie, it just goes on and on. If your job is to save lives, your profession, surely you then become more culpable than the ordinary “Joe” in the street.
Also, you seem to have an unhealthy obsession with paedophilia. Have you considered organised therapy rather than purging yourself on here?

Has there ever been any suggestion that Russell Obrien is a suspect in this case? i.e. He seems to have been missing for significant parts of the evening of May 3rd. From published reports it appears at least that no one actually saw Madeleine in bed for much of the evening (they listened at doors etc, etc.) and the exact times at which the children were allegedly checked appears to come under scrutiny in some reports?
This seems to be such a ludicrously simple idea that I would hope it has been considered and proven impossible?

He is being investigated for torture and falsifying documents. Who in their right mind can defend this guy and as someone mentioned earlier call him passionate. Give me a break, once he was made an arguido he should have been suspended.”
So to summarise what you’re saying:
1. Amaral shouldn’t have any defence.
2. Amaral should be suspended
Ok,
So by the same token and on balance of evidence:
1. Gerry and Kate McCann should have no defence lawyers.
2. Gerry and Kate McCann should be suspended from their workplace.

Hilarious…………
But the couple are said to be frustrated with the gag order and Mitchell said Monday that it was possible that they might give interviews to Portuguese and Spanish press as part of the new publicity drive.
“They have not said anything since being made arguido,” Mitchell said. “Both Kate and Gerry do find it frustrating, but they don’t want to make a bad situation worse.”

Stiggy and others - from what I’ve read on cadaver dogs, they should be able to distinguish human decomposition products (smells) from non-human decomposition smells. Apparently the smells used in training are synthetic, very specific, and kept under very tight security in the training facilities.
So like the ‘abductor-administered sedation’ - which wouldn’t explain traces of drugs in hair left in apartment 5a during or before abduction (or in any other samples found in the McCann’s villa or car) - the ‘rotting [non-human] meat’ wouldn’t explain Eddie’s reaction to the car boot. Like Maura, and so much else in the McCann campaign, it’s an unhelpful (but revealing) distraction.
I’ve also read that the decomposition smells that Eddie reacts to can be detected in some cases after only 1 hour, while in other cases they are not released in detectable quantities until about 4 hours after death, so the average delay of 2 hours so often cited and recited, like so much else in this case, shouldn’t be taken too rigidly.
