Madeleine McCann: Amaral Policing, Secrets Out And EastEnders
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE: PORTUGUESE POLICE CHIEF IS SACKED AFTER AMAZING OUTBURST.”
Page 9: “Madeleine detective kicked off case after blasting British police” – Chief inspector Goncalo Amaral says: “The British police have only been working on what the McCann couple want them to and what suits them.”
Says Amaral: “The Ocean Club is in Praia da Luz, not in London…It won’t be an email, and an anonymous one at that, which will distract our line of investigation.”
Mr Amaral is making reference to the email sent to the official website of the Prince of Wales last week claming a vengeful nanny had abducted Madeleine.
Pages 30 and 31: “HAIR-RAISING TRUTH ABOUT THE PSYCHIC BARBER – During the day Gordon Smith cuts hair, at night he claims he communes with the spirits. So does he really think he can help the McCanns find Madeleine?”
THE WORLD’S GREATEST NEWSPAPER confirms that former EastEnders actress Michelle Collins is a “BELIEVER”.
DAILY MAIL page 7: “Off the case. Madeleine police chief demoted after amazing rant against McCanns and British detectives”
Say Amaral: “They [the English] have been investigating tip-offs and information created and worked upon by the McCanns”
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE: CHIEF COP SACKED.”
Page 10: “INSPECTOR CLUELESS GETS THE BOOT”
Page 11: “If Maddie IS dead she will tell me where he body is” – Says Gordon Smith
DAILY MIRROR front page: “Maddy copper is axed”
Page 7: “OFF THE CASE – Boozy cop is demoted after furious outburst against the McCanns”
THE SUN page 7: “MADDIE COP FIRED FOR McCANNS RANT – storm as bungler says family duped Brit police”
Comments Clarence Mitchell: “I can confirm that Kate and Gerry are aware of this development but we cannot comment”
THE GUARDIAN page 7: “Detective leading hunt for Madeleine sacked after blast at UK police” – Mr Amaral is 47. He has been demoted. He is 48 in the Sun. Such are the facts
Carols Pinto de Abreu, the McCanns’ Portuguese lawyer, says: “The McCanns cannot confess to something they did not do and cannot and should not lie to please the police”
THE INDEPENDENT page 8: “Detective leading Madeleine hunt dropped from case after outburst” – Amaral is being investigated over an alleged attack on the mother of a different missing girl. Read about that here
THE TIMES front page: “Detective in charge of McCann case sacked”
Page 9: “Madeleine detective sacked after outburst”
Alipio Ribeiro, Amaral’s boss, says: “The police should be discreet and keep quiet, but there is always someone who talks” – So much for those secrecy laws
DAILY TELEGRAPH page 15: “Madeleine inquiry chief sacked after attack on British police”
A “family friend” of the McCanns says: “What he [Mr Amaral] is saying is just plain wrong. Leicestershire Police are not doing anything on Kate and Gerry’s behalf. They are simply there for liaison. There is certainly no strategy to distract form the Portuguese investigation”
What investigation?

599. Stevo had you posted the photo showing the steps outside the McCann apartment a few days ago?
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:33 pm
What about the mystery DNA that was found on the window sill, not the McCanns, not the children, whose DNA is it? Mr. Lust?
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:32 pm
569. I don’t by this theory that they handed Madeleine off. Sorry. Not because Madelein is so prettty or because she is an IVF child (I think it’s weird people measure a child’s worth with those kinds of statements) but because I don’t think anything was pre-meditated.
I’m not sure what happened but I’ve felt that O’Brien is a very important person in this mystery. His partner too - Jane Tanner.
So he had his own car? Gerry didn’t share his hire car with O’Brien? Gerry claims he shared the hire care with something like 20 other people? Ludicrous is right.

500 - Andy
Thanks for the link. It’s pretty clear on it for all those doubters out there.

548 - Maicen
I think that too - but only because of what you said - minimal evidence.
Police are learning all the time and I think in this case they are making sure all the i’s and all the t’s are crossed properly before charging anyone.

Andy 585:
Damn good question - I’ve wondered about that for ages.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:28 pm
(587) I haven’t heard which one! Anyone else?

However, I think it IS likely that the paragraph was changed. Someone else posted the original article as the original postin a thread named ‘parents to apply for lifting of ’suspect’ status - The Times’ in the same forum.
http://forums.mirror.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=18703&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
Does anyone else remember reading the original version of this article?
Any comments?

Elliot - give us priest timepoints tomorrow.

576. Jolie that is interesting thanks for pointing it out.

Sorry, not ‘on’, but ‘associated with’.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:24 pm
I haven’t yet seen a picture of the 10 steps (maybe someone could post a link?). However, if these lead to the patio, how could the McCanns (or whoever found her lying there) not have known someone in the upstairs apartment might have seen something?

Spanish is beatiful. For a example:
Alguien sabe algo?

I am sure that Madeleine’s medical records will show if she had any special condition like autism, CHARGE. If she did, then it is even more outrageous that she was left alone with her twin siblings.
Leaving aside all the forensic evidence (and accepting her parent’s story) there are many reasons why it makes little sense to ‘target’ abducting Madeleine.
Why would an abductor think it safe to go into an apartment which (as the McCanns claim) was in full view of the Tapas Bar?
Why take a child who was in a room with two others? There would be one hell of a racket if they all woke up and saw a stranger in the room. Very risky.
Why take a child who is being so regularly checked by so many people?
It is unlikely this was a ‘walk-by’ abduction because the shutters were down, so we have to assume an abductor had been carefully watching for days. So he/she would have known all the above problems.
And, those questions are excluding all the forensic stuff.
Also, it is not just the anti-McCann nutters who think she died in the apartment/on the stairs that night, so do
The PJ
The British Policy
The independent Strongwood Report.
Only people favouring the abduction theory are those who probably made it up.

PPS: It was recently reported that Eddie had found ‘the scent of death’ on another member of the Tapas 9 back in England.
Wonder which one????

575. Thanks for clarifying Murder.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:22 pm
577. Murder.
What happened to O’Brien’s car? Was it ever tested? Has it even been looked at?
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:22 pm
Well pub time has arrived, nice fencing with some of you today albeit on such a heart rending subject, despite everything that my brain tells me I hope against hope that Madeleine will be found safe and well.We all have and are entitled to our opinions, mine I guess are like most other people just fishing without catching much, our resident Portuguese IT expert here thinks the preist knows what has happend,he has swayed me round to his way of thinking by pointing out checkable timepoints in the case, speculation I know, but it appears to stack up,when all put together. Well have a good night everyone, you to Maura, although not really religous,I will say a few words for Madeleine before sleep tonight.Good night all.

PS to 577:
O’Brien also stayed on ‘to help’ K&G after 3 May.
He had the use of their rental car while they were away on their European tour (having taken all the media with them).
Who says KATE AND GERRY put the body in the spare wheel well?
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:21 pm
576. Jolie.
The first was probably a draft that must have slipped past Mr Mitchell, who upon noticing it immediately rang the editor and said, “Remember that Portuguese newspaper we threatened to sue but never followed up on? Well that’ll be you next time pal! Oh and take the word “ridiculous” out or people will know it’s from me.”

“If you put the beginning phrase of the original sentence into your search engine (They hope to have this ridiculous situation sorted out long before Christmas), it will still bring you up to the same link it originally had, but now with the altered paragraph.”
Delete, delete, delete…
Sorry, brain is fried from reading so many posts on Anorak. Putting the phrase into the search engine just brings you to the Mirror forum post. Unable to verify that the words were indeed changed.

573. James P,
The McCanns & Tapas gang have changed their story so many times about the shuttered window I’ve come to believe there aren’t any windows at all. Just endless mazes of brilliant white passage ways the McCanns and Company lead me down with their tinkling elf-like laughter. Their shifting shifty descriptions and Korsakoff-syndrome memory recall are like the the very passage ways they guide me down - never ending and ever changing.

If we repeat lies over and over enough times, soon it becomes the truth.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:17 pm
Because I personally believe the dogs and the boot soup ‘evidence’ any hypothesis I come up with will have to at some point place MM’s body in the boot of the car.
No they did not have the time or tools to deal with the body. I think the body was hidden in a freezer in another apartment. (I prefer to believe in one piece) And we are talking about the body of a small child - not a 200lb man. Makes it much easier to deal with.
If they disposed of the body on the night of her disappearance they would then have had to move the body at a later date after they rented the car.
And this rules out my belief in Stranger Abduction all together.
But that’s just my opinion.

Sherlock 559: O’Brien had a car, which could have been parked about 2 metres from the kids’ bedroom window on the evening of 3 May. O’Brien was absent for most of the dinner.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:14 pm
A Times article on October 1 included the following paragraph:
[QUOTE]]
(The McCann’s) “They hope to have this ridiculous situation sorted out long before Christmas,” the source said. “It could be a quiet word in an ear; at higher levels it could be a direct approach to the judge or prosecutors saying, ‘This is the case as it looks from our point of view, we would urge you not to go any further’.
[UNQUOTE]
However, the next day this damaging language was altered to read:
[QUOTE]
Madeleine’s parents are preparing a fresh legal bid to have their status as formal suspects in the disappearance of their daughter lifted and hope to clear their names before Christmas. Kate and Gerry McCann — who were made arguidos, or official suspects, in the case nearly four weeks ago — have instructed their lawyers to “explore every avenue” to have the status lifted, a friend said yesterday.
[UNQUOTE]
I stumbled across this on another forum on the Mirror: forums.mirror.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=18541&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=90 to find the post from ‘twinkletoes1′ on page 7.
If you put the beginning phrase of the original sentence into your search engine (They hope to have this ridiculous situation sorted out long before Christmas), it will still bring you up to the same link it originally had, but now with the altered paragraph.

Interesting, isn’t it?

Anon 553:
I wasn’t taking up the ‘plea bargain story’.
As Pinto de Abreu pointed out, that was a misunderstanding by his client of the PJ’s discussion of alternative sentencing scenarios (based on standard tariffs) for different crimes. They weren’t ‘offering’ anything, just pointing out the likely consequences of
[1] confessing to manslaughter
[2] obstructing justice and facing a possible murder charge
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:12 pm
566. LOL- Oh lord I can hear the stories now: Maddie snatched by well known gypsy circus artist, No No Ningunas Manos. Iron clad reason for DNA absence says fingerprinting expert Sir Jeffreys.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:12 pm
Am I correct in remembering that the window had been forced, but not from the outside? But if the front door was unlocked, why did KM immediately assume M. had been abducted and not gone for a walk?
