Madeleine McCann: Amaral Policing, Secrets Out And EastEnders
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE: PORTUGUESE POLICE CHIEF IS SACKED AFTER AMAZING OUTBURST.”
Page 9: “Madeleine detective kicked off case after blasting British police” – Chief inspector Goncalo Amaral says: “The British police have only been working on what the McCann couple want them to and what suits them.”
Says Amaral: “The Ocean Club is in Praia da Luz, not in London…It won’t be an email, and an anonymous one at that, which will distract our line of investigation.”
Mr Amaral is making reference to the email sent to the official website of the Prince of Wales last week claming a vengeful nanny had abducted Madeleine.
Pages 30 and 31: “HAIR-RAISING TRUTH ABOUT THE PSYCHIC BARBER – During the day Gordon Smith cuts hair, at night he claims he communes with the spirits. So does he really think he can help the McCanns find Madeleine?”
THE WORLD’S GREATEST NEWSPAPER confirms that former EastEnders actress Michelle Collins is a “BELIEVER”.
DAILY MAIL page 7: “Off the case. Madeleine police chief demoted after amazing rant against McCanns and British detectives”
Say Amaral: “They [the English] have been investigating tip-offs and information created and worked upon by the McCanns”
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE: CHIEF COP SACKED.”
Page 10: “INSPECTOR CLUELESS GETS THE BOOT”
Page 11: “If Maddie IS dead she will tell me where he body is” – Says Gordon Smith
DAILY MIRROR front page: “Maddy copper is axed”
Page 7: “OFF THE CASE – Boozy cop is demoted after furious outburst against the McCanns”
THE SUN page 7: “MADDIE COP FIRED FOR McCANNS RANT – storm as bungler says family duped Brit police”
Comments Clarence Mitchell: “I can confirm that Kate and Gerry are aware of this development but we cannot comment”
THE GUARDIAN page 7: “Detective leading hunt for Madeleine sacked after blast at UK police” – Mr Amaral is 47. He has been demoted. He is 48 in the Sun. Such are the facts
Carols Pinto de Abreu, the McCanns’ Portuguese lawyer, says: “The McCanns cannot confess to something they did not do and cannot and should not lie to please the police”
THE INDEPENDENT page 8: “Detective leading Madeleine hunt dropped from case after outburst” – Amaral is being investigated over an alleged attack on the mother of a different missing girl. Read about that here
THE TIMES front page: “Detective in charge of McCann case sacked”
Page 9: “Madeleine detective sacked after outburst”
Alipio Ribeiro, Amaral’s boss, says: “The police should be discreet and keep quiet, but there is always someone who talks” – So much for those secrecy laws
DAILY TELEGRAPH page 15: “Madeleine inquiry chief sacked after attack on British police”
A “family friend” of the McCanns says: “What he [Mr Amaral] is saying is just plain wrong. Leicestershire Police are not doing anything on Kate and Gerry’s behalf. They are simply there for liaison. There is certainly no strategy to distract form the Portuguese investigation”
What investigation?

612 Yes it was reported by a few sources Kate had been reading a criminal book with the title of ‘No Stone Left Unturned’ as holdiay reading. However, this is like everything else, specualtion and rumour. And since I can no longer find any reference to these reports it appears this part of the story was more than likely not true at all and has subsequently vanished from public view. If anyone has evidence to suggest otherwise I’d be interested to hear as I thought if Kate’s holiday reading choice were true it would be very important to the investigation.

609 - Peter O
I personally don’t think any of the Tapas 7 are personally responsible for Madeleine’s disappearance. Notice I said “personally responsible”. I mean - if anyone was responsible for the death of your own child, you’d want them locked up and crucified wouldn’t you? So to me, they can only be involved in a cover-up sense or as accessories to some act. It makes no sense whatsoever for one of those people to have been the villains here. If so, I think we’d have heard the McCanns say as much - especially now they are suspects.
Which leads me to think that yes, perhaps there is some collusion between them all because they are doctors and there has been wide reporting of tranquilizers and a syringe being found in the bedroom. I deduce that perhaps the reason they don’t want anyone to find a body is because of what is inside Madeleine’s body.

This May 18 article states that Portuguese law requires waiting 48 hours before beginning searches for missing children and complains about the high media profile of the Madeleine McCann in comparison of little notice taken to resident children. The article also claims that 31 children (19 girls and 12 boys) were declared missing last year (new cases opened) in Portugal. However, no information is given to report how many of those children were eventually located.
http://ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=37797
Another interesting statement from that article:
“According to UNICEF (the U.N. children’s fund), 1.2 million children are trafficked every year around the world.”
Someone posted yesterday that the official record of current open missing children cases in Portugal as of this week is only Madeleine’s case, per checking some official website online. However, when I went to the PJ’s website page for missing persons, I counted a total of 7 children’s photos, including Madeleine’s.
I will post the link to that page in a separate post (to avoid being delayed for moderation).

UK Express, UK - Sep 23, 2007
In Portugal yesterday it was revealed that detectives have seized a British police manual from the McCanns. Officers believe the book could be used as a key …

610 Mod. I keep coming back to accident and cover-up. And you know, I think that if this is the case, it is not too late for them to hold their hands up and claim they have been in a prolonged state of shock or whatever. They would probably get a light sentence and although they would initially be despised by everyone, maybe people would actually come round to understand.
Throwing the gauntlet down (twice!) - Find the body - Put up or show up - was ill-advised.
For Madeleine’s sake I just hope there will be closure. Poor little girl, no matter what.

The Real Stig
Thanks for replying regarding Amaral and the Cipriano case (on yesterday’s forum). I replied there (as post 1214) but am reprinting it here for all to read:
1212 The Real Stig (Oct. 2 forum)
If the photo of the bruises on the torso of the woman in the photo (head not show) are of Leonor Cipriano, it does lend more credibility to a beating scenario. After reading some more articles on the subject, though, it seems that this photo evidence was just presented this year? And even though she filed a complaint about the beating before trial, these charges are now only being made formally against the police this year (I’m assuming after the McCann disappearance became public), as the police were only made arguidos this June (according to this article: http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/world-news/article2950729.ece )
If she knows that Mr. Amaral was the one there, always, watching as she was beaten, then she should have been able to identify at least him. If the PJ were corrupt enough to not include the suspected officers in any of the lineups, that would be the only plausible explanation why she could not pick him out. If she were afraid of recriminations for identifying her assailants, she would not have made the accusation/complaint in the first place, I think.
Human nature being what it is, it is very possible that Leonor’s claims are true, and if it were, that would be very disturbing.
The article you linked has the following information related from one of the key witnesses at the trial:
Joana’s stepfather, the key witness whose accusation had been essential to the condemnation, according to “the Resident”, has recently told the “Evening Standard”:-
“Joana’s mother never did anything and she was arrested. I am fearful the same thing will happen to Kate McCann. Whenever I watch the news it reminds me of Joana. It is hard.”
Is the stepfather to Joana (I couldn’t find his name in the article) willing to be held liable for perjury at court? Why is he casting blame elsewhere for Leonor’s imprisonment, when his testimony was key to putting her there?
Like I said, the PJ may have done wrong in the Cipriano case, but I am suspicious that the formal complaint and the reports of this is only being brought forward after the McCann case becomes a top media event. It is possible that Cipriano’s lawyers saw an opportunity to create reasonable doubt about the fairness of the investigation and took advantage of it by fabricating a story, hoping to get their client(s) released. Or if we want to be truly cynical, they could have been approached by someone related to McCann supporters and given some coaching…
I think it is healthy to look at all aspects of the McMcCann case. Certainly, nothing definite is known by us on either case. Without corpses, it is very difficult to know the truth.
Either way, it is good that Mr. Amaral is no longer heading the investigation, as his presence while still an arguido casts doubt on the legitimacy of the results of the investigation.
We do know that Kate was given her full rights with presence of counsel and the choice not to answer questions of which she availed herself.
Did you know the one of the rights of being an arguido allows for the suspect to lie during interrogation without legal penalty if discovered having done so? That’s what I read this past week.
Thanks again for providing further information to answer my post.

There’s some odd psychological event happening on this blog - people are getting a kick out of slicing and dicing the McCanns with inane theories as if the truth could be unmasked in the comment section. Why? Does it just feel good, getting your high for the day, feel superior by twisting the knife deeper?
I’d hate to have this blog in the jury seat. Tried, convicted, guilty, and death sentenced announced before the trial. Most here are petty minded and great time wasters and all of this verges on evil intent.

“Madeleine McCann: the key questions
Why are the “Tapas 9″ key to solving the Madeleine mystery?
The McCanns have engaged Rogerio Alves, president of the Portuguese Bar Association, to prepare a defence against allegations that they accidentally killed Madeleine and disposed of her body. A source close to the legal team said that Mr Alves and the McCanns’ British lawyers, Michael Caplan, QC, and Angus McBride, were trying desperately to expedite the legal process, which has the potential to last for up to a year.
“They hope to have this ridiculous situation sorted out long before Christmas,” the source said. “It could be a quiet word in an ear; at higher levels it could be a direct approach to the judge or prosecutors saying, ‘This is the case as it looks from our point of view, we would urge you not to go any further’.
“It could be a formal presentation of a file of information. The mechanics of that are down to the lawyers. They are working very hard, both here and in Portugal, and will be making representations at every opportunity to get this ridiculous situation sorted.”
Under Portuguese judicial secrecy laws the McCanns are forbidden from talking about the case, but they hope to get clearance from their lawyers to make the televisised appeal for the search for the four-year-old to continue.
The new poster and television campaign will be completed within the next ten days and will include Arabic adverts in Morocco, where several alleged sightings of Madeleine have been reported. The family is also in discussion with Spanish and Portuguese supermarket chains with a view to displaying Madeleine’s image on shopping trolleys.
Clarence Mitchell, the couple’s spokesman, said: “The key to this is getting the message out into the homes, the tiny places where they don’t see the wider media. We need to get to the village in the hills where they’ve never seen a television.”
Friends said that the McCann family are now so desperate for information about their daughter’s whereabouts that they are considering employing a psychic. Mr and Mrs McCann have already consulted a book by Gordon Smith, who claims to be Britain’s “most accurate medium”, and are being urged by other members of the family to seek his views directly.
It emerged today that family members have been in contact with Mr Smith — a Scottish psychic who goes by the name of “the psychic barber”, on account of his day job cutting hair.
Mr Smith, 45, said that a member of the McCann family had asked for help via his publisher. “I never charge for private readings,” he said. “I would really love to help the family in any way I can.”
A source close to the family, who are strict Catholics, said: “They are desperate for any help and would consider any credible information. It’s not quite as loopy as it might first appear. Some police forces do look at this sort of thing seriously.”
It was reported today that detectives in Portugal are waiting on the results of DNA tests on hairs found in the McCanns’ apartment. The newspaper 24 Horas reported that detectives believe Madeleine died by after down a short flight of stairs outside the apartment.
A friend of the McCanns said that the allegations were “nonsensical and contradictory”. The friend said: “There are only ten small patio steps at the back, because it’s a ground-floor flat. The idea that she fell down the steps and died is ludicrous, and she would have been found very quickly.”
Despite the constant leaks of information from sources within the inquiry, a senior Portuguese police officer has accused the McCanns of feeding stories to the media to distract the investigation.
Carlos Anjos, president of the Judicial Police Inspectors Union, said: “Since their daughter disappeared, Gerry and Kate have followed a strategy of almost daily announcements of new facts designed to distract and confuse the investigation.”
A friend of the McCanns said: “Everything that’s been reported was in Kate and Gerry’s witness statements. There should be no surprises for the authorities in any of this.”.”

I am sure I read somewhere that the PJ found a police manual in the McCann’s belongings. Can anyone confirm or dismiss this please?

Batman I keep hearing head injury (and even back of the head) but don’t know where it was coming from unless they have brain goo or a body they are not telling us about.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:42 pm
Batman, I think you’re looking at it as ‘any child’ my thoughts are that madeleine was targeted.
A bloke in a pub sees three young women and takes a fancy to ne… that will be the one he wants. Or vice versa of course, girl sees bloke… etc
A paedophile is the same. Its not just any child, its usually a specific child who takes his interest. Hence I still think, look at the staff more closely.
I also think that the McCanns are amateurs, if it is them they will slip up at some point. Human nature…..
If its abduction that will also come out because another child will go missing and the abductor will slip up.
I guess in a way I hope it was the parents and an accident…. for Madeleines sake.

577 Murder
How about starting with a completely different scenario? One in which the McCann’s themselves are not guilty of any real wrongdoing, save their choice of babysitting service and perhaps after the event trying to make it look like the children were checked more often than was actually the case.
Who then in the Tapas 9 needs to explain their whereabouts for much of the evening of May 3rd? Did they have access to a car or some other means of hiding a body temporarily? Did this person stay in PDL, or re-visit, after the events of May 3rd. Did this person have access to the McCann’s hire car? Did this person believe, incorrectly that the police had bought the abduction story and then felt it safe to start moving evidence relating to events of May 3rd?
In this scenario the McCann’s themselves would by unaware of any wrongdoing by any member of ‘friends’ but would inadvertently keep coming into contact with ‘evidence’ relating to their daughters disappearance.
Can’t prove any of this….

This is hilarious on http://www.madeleinemcann.blogspot.com
There’s a poll that asks “Do you believe the McCanns are innocent?”
It has YES=57% and NO=42%
It also states “Poll Closed”. I bet it was like watching the Clapometer in Opportunity Knocks and when it started shifting in the opposite direction, Clarence Mitchell closed it!

So, have I got this right? On 3rd May O’Brien had a hired car, but the McCanns did not. They only hired their’s on around 25th May.
Very interesting about whether or not it has been searched, and if so what might or might not have been found. Might answer a lot of questions such as why the British police are so specific about M dying of a head injury - or have I got that bit wrong.
