Madeleine McCann: Kate McCann Becomes Mum
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE – I CRY EVERY DAY SAYS KATE”
“For the first time she reveals her torment” – Kate gives the papers what they want: tears
Pages 6 and 7: “Madleine’s mum: I can’t stop crying” – Kate McCann is no longer Kate McCann; she is above all things Madeleine’s mum
“Obviously nothing can compare with the night Madeleine went missing,” says mum. And Gerry – dad’s – worst moment? “I think when we were made suspects in our own daughter’s disappearance – when the inference was that Madeleine was dead and that, somehow, we were involved…”
Yes…
“But, no it can’t get any worse than that first night…”
DAILY MAIL page 7: “Some days I just can’t stop the tears, says Maddie’s mother”
“Second police chief quits the case” – Tavares Almeida has followed his boss Goncarlo Amaral and left the business of Madeleine McCann to another lucky Portuguese cop
DAILY MIRROR front page: “KATE McCANN SPEAKS AS NEVER BEFORE..Every day felt like a week”
Page 5: “Being named suspects, the idea that we were involved, was terrible. But NOTHING can compare to the trauma of the first night our Madeleine went missing”
Kate is a “locum GP”. Gerry is a “heart specialist”. These are the facts. And they remain unaltered
The couple give an interview as they visit the offices of the Leicester Mercury newspaper, where they are presented with a cheque for £57,000 from the sales of the Madeleine wristbands
THE SUN front page: “KATE’S MADDIE ORDEAL – NOTHING’S AS BAD AS THAT NIGHT. Mum tells of torment”
Page 6: “I weep for Maddie…but we still have hope”
Says Kate McCann: “I’ve had days when if I wasn’t crying for Madeleine, I was crying from the messages people have sent us”
The McCanns “say their lowest point…was when Portuguese police declared them ‘arguidos’ – formal suspects over their daughter’s disappearance”. So not the night Madeleine disappeared, as the Express says?
Gerry is a “cardiologist”
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE – Kate: I cry for my daughter every day”
Page 8 and 9: “Finding Maddie had gone was far worse than being named suspect in killing”
THE TIMES page 14: “The twins are the only part of our lives that are normal”
Kate McCann says: “There is a semblance of normality returning. It’s more normal than it was three weeks ago, Amelie and Sean can see that. But really how can it be normal without Madeleine?”
THE INDEPENDENT page 8: “Second officer steps own from Madeleine inquiry” – Tavares Almeida. Bad Times, as Tavares were wont to say
THE GUARDIAN page 15: “Sacked Madeleine detective’s deputy seeks leave” – Senor Tavares. (Heaven Must be Missing An Angel)
DAILY TELEGRAPH front page: “KATE McCANN: THE DAILY TORMENT OF LIFE WITHOUT MADELEINE”
Page 3: “The McCanns have kept Madeleine’s room the same as it was. The twins are allowed in for a few minutes - “Otherwise, the door remains closed most of the time”
Detectives make notes.

186 - Stevo. RE NPD. Not sure if Fred and Rosemary West were actually classified as psychopaths, but more than likely. Psychopathy usually includes NPD characteristics. It is rare for two psychopaths to hitch up, but when they do - and when their condition is as extreme as being killers - the results are catastrophic for their victims.
So, although not suggesting it applies in the McCanns case, I think there probably are instances of NPDs being able to maintain a working relationship.
This whole area of NPD and psychopathy is very interesting. I think more people should study the area because if you inadvertently tangle with either a NPD or psychopath you will never forget the experience.
Incidentally, Robert M. Hare, PhD is an American expert on psychopathy and he estimates that 1 in 250 people are psychopaths. However, it is important to remember not all psychopaths are killers, but a great many killers are psychopaths.

In my case I simply flatlined emotions, and did what had to be done. So I do not hit on them for seeming cold etc. My 2 ( of 3 sons) were not kidnapped due to my being out to dinner. I was widowed at 24 with 3 small sons, and got a job transfer.I had to go 2000 miles up to Johannesburg to find accommodation for said transfer..My 2 eldest.( I took baby with me as I was breast feeding still) were left for a week plus/minus with casual acquaintances ,I had worked with wife for about 6 months then she left job, recommended at that, by child welfare as excellent foster parents !!!! . My father ( who ran/ owned hotels so could not take them at that point) popped over once a day to see my sons.I was phoning 3 times a day.One day no answer ,called father after 10 failed calls to these people, and he shot over to their home .. they had bunked- with my sons…. bear in mind SA is like 10 times the size of Portugal or UK…….. made one announcement only to press and TV..police advised us NOT to alert them with a snowmail of news ( unlike McCann’s advice) …then the search began….7 months it took .You have no idea how traumatic that was ..but I was used to political trauma of detention without trial in SA see other posts…so I was psyched to handle a lot without breaking.
I had a baby, and a job, and a new home, and had to move into it….. I kept my head in public all the time……like McCann’s………….doctor had me anyway on amphetamines, and so baby who was 9 months went off breast feeding because of the pills !!!
However I have other serious misgivings about them being entirely innocent or truthful here.Right from beginning it always seemed to be more about them and an image they were trying to present, than about Madeline, which as a parent I found odd to say least. The many many versions of their movements. The stuff usually posted here as questionable leading to a ??? about them.
But I do not compare them and me, or the situations ,as they are quite quite different.

Portia 272. I know many people with much loved IVF children of all ages.
IVF between two parents is acceptable to the Catholic church. AID is not, nor is destruction of embryos.

Of course, if the McCanns are guilty, it most definitely does benefit them to have the investigation halted or tampered with. Dealing with the public’s neverending suspicion of their guilt is still a superior situation to being found out to be guilty of a crime/coverup and fraud and locked up in prison for many years.
That’s why all this appearance of obstruction and interference with the investigation makes it look more likely the McCanns are guilty of something serious.

Only my second post and already I have to complain about abuse from another poster. Moderator, please take action against Susan’s post no. 276 which is undoubtedly insulting and unnecessary.
Rather disappointing from a fellow Glaswegian - NPD anyone?
October 5th, 2007 at 4:30 pm
(116) Slyfox says:
“Alarm bells went off when I heard them say they felt guilty for not being there “at the moment she was taken” as with a few other things they have said.
What they are actually saying is they might of been there at her death but they weren’t the ones who removed her from the apartment. And that’s where the accomplice comes in. I think that the accomplice knew that if they waited to remove the body - as per planned with the McCanns, then the McCann reaction would not come across as authentic.
My interpretation is that they are sticking as close to the truth as they can - best thing to do when you are lying - there are a number of clues to this in their interviews. One I remember clearly is where they’re asked a question/presented with a statement, they both hesitate, Kate looks at GM and says ‘I think that’s true isn’t it” They visibly relax and respond.”
Absolutely my view too: “they might have been there at her death”….Hence the reported shout of Mrs. McCann’s,when she ‘rushed back to the Tapas bar’ - “They’ve taken her!” And it also accounts for the obvious lie she was tricked into (by Jenni Murray’s careful, and killer, questions on ‘The Woman’s Hour’ radio
interview on August 8th) when Ms. Murray asked her - subsequent to them talking about Madeleine’s last day - “Was she asleep when you left” to which Mrs. M replied…”Erm…4 second delay and clicking or sucking of teeth……Yes, she was, Yes!”(impatiently). I’m posting the link again because I think it is so significant. This question is about one-third of the way through.

October 5th, 2007 at 4:30 pm
My theory on why the McCann’s are not liked:
“IVF violates the rights of the child: it deprives him of his filial relationship with his parental origins and can hinder the maturing of his personality. It objectively deprives conjugal fruitfulness of its unity and integrity, it brings about and manifests a rupture between genetic parenthood, gestational parenthood, and responsibility for upbringing. This threat to the unity and stability of the family is a source of dissension, disorder, and injustice in the whole of social life.”
http://catholicinsight.com/online/church/vatican/article_475.shtml
Most people are not Catholic but most people would still be able to recognize the violation of human rights.

I think you are over-simplifyling things a bit - theres a helluva lot more to be asked. Working in an advocate’s office doesn’t make you an expert.

#262 Maddie could have fallen off the balcony or the wall (temptations that all of our children would not have been able to resist) early in the afternoon. The parent would then have brought her inside the apartment for medical care. At this point the statistics do not support the likelihood that a 3 or 4 year old would actually die from a fall. Most young children (and the statistics are different with older children) actually survive falls but suffer from serious injuries and paralysis.
One of the last reports out of Portugal stated that police were trying to determine whether the sedative was given before or after a fall. Very sad scenario.
Hope sedatives weren’t involved. Would be a horrible thing to have to live with.

To back up my suspicions from post 246/247:
This is from an article originally published in on October 2.
“The McCanns have engaged Rogerio Alves, president of the Portuguese Bar Association, to prepare a defence against allegations that they accidentally killed Madeleine and disposed of her body. A source close to the legal team said that Mr Alves and the McCanns’ British lawyers, Michael Caplan, QC, and Angus McBride, were trying desperately to expedite the legal process, which has the potential to last for up to a year.
“They hope to have this ridiculous situation sorted out long before Christmas,” the source said. “It could be a quiet word in an ear; at higher levels it could be a direct approach to the judge or prosecutors saying, ‘This is the case as it looks from our point of view, we would urge you not to go any further’.”
by October 2, the original article is no longer available in it original form. A different version appears with this more politically palatable expression of the original paragraph:
“Madeleine’s parents are preparing a fresh legal bid to have their status as formal suspects in the disappearance of their daughter lifted and hope to clear their names before Christmas. Kate and Gerry McCann — who were made arguidos, or official suspects, in the case nearly four weeks ago — have instructed their lawyers to “explore every avenue” to have the status lifted, a friend said yesterday.”
Luckily, interested persons on the forums had pasted the full original article in the forums and the original wording (and meaning) was able to be discovered.
http://forums.mirror.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=18703&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
This page linked above has the full article (posted on the forum October 1) and the link to it. If you click on the link at the top of the first post on the page, you will see a different article in its place.
In another post I will also immediately post a link to a newspaper (from Qatar) which has the full original article from October 1 intact. (I was able to find it by typing in some of the original article’s sentences into the search engine).

They do appear to mention, at every opportunity, their willingness to return to Portugal but they always add - if required or - if neccessary.
I remember them saying how they would never leave Portugal without Madeleine quite frequently too.

247 Thanks for the link. Interesting.
I have to repeat my question of yesterday?
Why on earth should the investigation NOT proceed? It ought to proceed. Who could possibly benefit if it doesn’t proceed?
The McCanns? No because, as you say, mud sticks. An investigation will either clear them as suspects or bring them to trial. If they are innocent a careful investigation is better for them. If they are guilty, it’s obvious that we need a proper investigation and trial.
The tapas friends? Ditto.
The freemasons, UK Govt, PM, Vatican, catholic church, anglican church, UK press, UK police, Portuguese press???!!! Noooo! I don’t think so! (But Dan Brown will make a mint with this one if someone isn’t already doing it!)
WHO could possibly benefit by this investigation NOT being continued in a thoroughly professional manner? I personally think it will continue. Far too high-profile to be dropped.
Of course, if it turns out there’s no evidence, that’s a different matter. But a thorough investigation should sort that out once and for all.
October 5th, 2007 at 4:13 pm
247. Jolie.
The “reporter” is obviously trying to spin the story in such a way as to make it sound like the investigation will suffer greatly because of this. I believe however, as do a few others, that the case against the McCanns is already quite substantial, despite the media reports, and that it is just a few odds and ends that need sorting out to satisfy the prosecutor, so fewer officers will be needed at this stage of the investigation anyway.
–
I did notice that Mark Williams-Thomas was again allowed to open his mouth as an “expert” although what being “a former police child protection officer” makes one an expert in is anyone’s guess;
He said: “The difficult aspect of that though is that whoever that is, do they have the qualifications and experience of investigating major crime?
“Portugal is not a big place so that does create a problem.
“It’s a bit of a poisoned chalice – who’s going to take over a role that other people are leaving in droves?”
Perhaps Mr Williams-Thomas should inspect his own “qualifications and experience of investigating major crime” and see how relevant they are to this case?

Miacen:
I haven’t been reading all the posts but since you have experienced this, and i am very sorrythat you have:
“long story and not about to written here though positively my 2 sons, aged at time 2.5 and 4 years of age were found, alive and unharmed, some 7 months later by Police and PI, with help from child welfare”
Then does the demeanour and behaviour of the McCann’s ring true.
(Apologies for asking again if you have laready expressed your view)

257 Portia.
But if she feel off balcony and died from head injuries where on earth is the body.??? The many people there that night would have found her in minutes, possibly before the police even arrived.
The UK police state she died “inside” apartment in Mail and Sun stories today…..agreeing with PJ it seems.
October 5th, 2007 at 4:10 pm
Still going round in circles ,I realised that I was looking at this case from an emotional point of view, not very wise ,when justice is involved,so lets take an impartial view,as my old boss used to say, rule nothing in and nothing oot lassie. (1)Was a crime committed and is there any evidence to the crime,(2)Are there any suspects to this crime,(3)Do the suspects or suspect have a motive,or could it be an unpremeditated act, which led to the crime(4)Is evidence if any, in a fit state to be presented at trial,is it dubious of a circumstantial nature, damaged or less than will stand up to severe cross-examination.(5)Who are the witnesses if any, what is their relationship to the accused or victim(s)(6)Are there any significant deviations in witnesses statements, enough to cast doubt on their testament or their status as a witness.(7)If a homicide is there a body or evidence of a homicide or a death having taken place,at the alleged scene of crime(8)Finally and some times crucially, has any one, suspects or witnesses refused to answer questions relative to their involvement or non involvement in the alleged crime,do they have good reason for this,or is it a mechanism to avoid implicating themselves in the crime. See how many you can honestly answer, your conclusion may surprise you.

176 m.e.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought the site was for discussion of all opinions?
Some of us would like to get at the truth. We may have a belief more one way than another but there is plenty to discuss, I think?
I realise that there are a multitude of different guilt theories, conspiracy theories etc. etc. whereas most of us who think the evidence, at the moment, does not indicate guilt, tend to take the view that Madeleine was taken from her bed, as her parents have said all along.
However, by whom, and if and where and how she died, or of she is still alive, and crucially, how the investigation is being carried out, are all valid topics for discussion.
Although I currently cannot see any way in which the McCanns could have been involved (other than by leaving the children asleep in the apartment while they ate at the tapas bar), I would be perfectly ready to change my view if and when evidence was put into the public domain to indicate that they were.
I am interested to read the views of those who believe they are definitely or probably guilty. I haven’t been convinced yet but I’m still interested, and VERY interested in the investigation.
I hope m.e. you’re not attempting to get rid of anyone who isn’t a rampant supporter of the “hang’em high” brigade?! Free speech and all that!

funny you should say that. I just realised I haven’t followed newsrounds for a couple of days now..

I have never been abusive to anyone here ,or anywhere else on internet.
And, as I have told you before, I enjoy your posts.
All the babbling about NPD does my head in. There is no evidence of this psycho analysis. Nor do I hold such stock as others here on their cold demeanour, being a person who is very good in a major crises, but falls apart over petty nonsense.
But there are some rather serious inconsistencies that do bear scrutiny and do cause people to speculate about McCann’s and possibly OB and Tanner. Not helped at all by all the hysterical daily outpouring for 6 months and 2 days in press a lot of it from them one way and another. via a massive PR express train
But since both UK and PJ believe she died in that apartment I remain sceptical about McCann’s,and abduction theory, even if I did not wish to be back in May ‘07… I have been in a similar situation myself, years ago now ( long story and not about to written here though positively my 2 sons, aged at time 2.5 and 4 years of age were found, alive and unharmed, some 7 months later by Police and PI, with help from child welfare )
