Madeleine McCann: Kate McCann Becomes Mum
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE – I CRY EVERY DAY SAYS KATE”
“For the first time she reveals her torment” – Kate gives the papers what they want: tears
Pages 6 and 7: “Madleine’s mum: I can’t stop crying” – Kate McCann is no longer Kate McCann; she is above all things Madeleine’s mum
“Obviously nothing can compare with the night Madeleine went missing,” says mum. And Gerry – dad’s – worst moment? “I think when we were made suspects in our own daughter’s disappearance – when the inference was that Madeleine was dead and that, somehow, we were involved…”
Yes…
“But, no it can’t get any worse than that first night…”
DAILY MAIL page 7: “Some days I just can’t stop the tears, says Maddie’s mother”
“Second police chief quits the case” – Tavares Almeida has followed his boss Goncarlo Amaral and left the business of Madeleine McCann to another lucky Portuguese cop
DAILY MIRROR front page: “KATE McCANN SPEAKS AS NEVER BEFORE..Every day felt like a week”
Page 5: “Being named suspects, the idea that we were involved, was terrible. But NOTHING can compare to the trauma of the first night our Madeleine went missing”
Kate is a “locum GP”. Gerry is a “heart specialist”. These are the facts. And they remain unaltered
The couple give an interview as they visit the offices of the Leicester Mercury newspaper, where they are presented with a cheque for £57,000 from the sales of the Madeleine wristbands
THE SUN front page: “KATE’S MADDIE ORDEAL – NOTHING’S AS BAD AS THAT NIGHT. Mum tells of torment”
Page 6: “I weep for Maddie…but we still have hope”
Says Kate McCann: “I’ve had days when if I wasn’t crying for Madeleine, I was crying from the messages people have sent us”
The McCanns “say their lowest point…was when Portuguese police declared them ‘arguidos’ – formal suspects over their daughter’s disappearance”. So not the night Madeleine disappeared, as the Express says?
Gerry is a “cardiologist”
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE – Kate: I cry for my daughter every day”
Page 8 and 9: “Finding Maddie had gone was far worse than being named suspect in killing”
THE TIMES page 14: “The twins are the only part of our lives that are normal”
Kate McCann says: “There is a semblance of normality returning. It’s more normal than it was three weeks ago, Amelie and Sean can see that. But really how can it be normal without Madeleine?”
THE INDEPENDENT page 8: “Second officer steps own from Madeleine inquiry” – Tavares Almeida. Bad Times, as Tavares were wont to say
THE GUARDIAN page 15: “Sacked Madeleine detective’s deputy seeks leave” – Senor Tavares. (Heaven Must be Missing An Angel)
DAILY TELEGRAPH front page: “KATE McCANN: THE DAILY TORMENT OF LIFE WITHOUT MADELEINE”
Page 3: “The McCanns have kept Madeleine’s room the same as it was. The twins are allowed in for a few minutes - “Otherwise, the door remains closed most of the time”
Detectives make notes.

I’d expect a woman to want to look decent on telly. Who wouldn’t?
But where did Kate get her huge wardrobe from? I mean, how many different outfits do you need? If they used a low cost airline, they’d not have more than about a 15 Kg allowance per passenger. Kate didn’t go back home for months and yet it’s difficult to find her wearing the same clothes on different days.
I’m not reading anything into that other than saying that for someone who has openly said she hates being on TV and in the spotlight, she has rather hypocritically lived up to the cameras don’t you think?

Former Scotland Yard detective John O’Connor told CBS’ Early Show Wednesday that the Portuguese investigation was “grasping at straws” by focusing on the evidence found in the car.
Here’s where he criticizes the PL: “You don’t have a body, you don’t have a cause of death, you don’t have any witnesses, you don’t have a confession, you don’t have a murder weapon, and you don’t have a motive. Now if anybody thinks they could bring a murder charge with all those main ingredients missing, they’re on the wrong end,” O’Connor told Early Show co-anchor Julie Chen.
The former detective was highly critical of the Portuguese police’s investigation. “What they’re trying to do is to shoehorn the McCanns into the evidence that they have, and that’s not the right way to go about it.”
In the beginning, he supported the PL

Changing his tune didn’t strike me right at the time. Either the PL are doing a good job or not - or they are doing a good job as long as they believe an intruder is responsible and not the British parents.
That works.

Gerry’s haircuts! These are clearly an important part of Gerry’s life, because on the very first blog of his, that I read, he mentioned having time to ‘get a much needed haircut’. If someone really wants a link to ALL of Gerry’s blogs I will post it later.
This blog thing and seeing the PayPal part of the website made me become very interested in this case. From my perspective the main emphasis was on Gerry and Kate and ensuring the funds kept come rolling in. The fish-smell-ometer went sky high! Glad to see Clarence got a handle now on our budding Jeffrey Archer.

Dora,
Ignore the ‘cheesey’, patronising and pointless insults. People resort to insults when they can’t come up with a reasonable argument. Your views make a lot of sense to me. Maria’s and Maura’s also.

Stevo. what is your problem dude..Y R U so obsessed w/ the Mccanns’

I don’t think there’s a case in history that’s like the McCann’s case.
I think I’m right in saying that in all previous child abductions/murders/kidnaps etc. the public support has been 100%. The closest to this are those cot death cases or that case with the UK nanny and the dead baby out here in the USA. Even that was supposedly cot death.
That’s why this case is so compelling and has people divided. There’s as much to say they killed their daughter as there is to say they didn’t.

I understand what you’re saying.
I think the McCann’s status has a lot (if not everything) to do with it. Had this been a couple from some rough council estate instead of Rothley, everyone would already have had them crucified after being hung, drawn and quartered.
I find it incredibly alarming that they play it all down so cool and nobody is challenging them. We see arguments about the distance from the room to the Tapas in minute detail. We see arguments about the number of minutes between checking the kids. Frankly those statistics don’t make one iota’s difference. In fact, the more talk about those actual measurements in time or distance are only more evidence of them trying to put a smokescreen over the real issue of leaving kids alone.

393 Stevo. Thx. Was beginning to wonder if she existed at all prior to the PdL holiday!

I think that there’s a massive difference between the Madeleine McCann case and the Rhys Jones case.
Sad that it was Rhys’ parents knew where Rhys was. They knew what had happened to him. They knew where when and how etc. They don’t know who?
Madeleines parents apparently don’t know anything about who what where when and how. How distressing must that be? I’m amazed that they function full stop even with help from their female friends.
If you look at most cultures dealing with the body of a deceased person is crucial to the healing of those left behind. Many people comment that they feel better after a funeral has taken place. The McCanns have none of that closure yet they began to feel better after 5 days! I find this fact incredible.
October 5th, 2007 at 6:07 pm
Then in another interview he had changed his tuned and I wondered if it was because the McCanns were suspects………I will try to find the links.
October 5th, 2007 at 6:05 pm
Initially former Scotland Yard Detective John O’Conner in a Sky News Video Interview, claimed the PL were doing a superior job, and he mentioned the scent trail to the market, and thought that Maddie was somewhere near the resort.

No it doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t true, you are right. But I also think that this case will carry a lot of idle gossip because there are many who will want to appear self-important claiming to have some extra information. hence gossip being spread by a friend of a friend. When people gossip, false and exaggerated statements are part of it.

Absolutely. I use the word “interesting” and someone has to make a big deal out of it. The whole case is “interesting” so what was the big deal krissie?

I was NOT comparing the cases in that way. What a silly thought!
Let me explain.
I was saying that the fact that KM later had her hair done nicely or changed her earrings (for which she was heavily criticised by a few people) does not mean she had no feelings.

Correct. He didn’t start it until about a week later. In fact he couldn’t have done it until then. The web domain name wasn’t registered until May 10.

Stevo re 287 Jo
Did I detect social services thinking in 287? My understanding of this is that if there is any ordinary reason at all that can be put forward to explain an incident, then any suspicions which may also explain the facts are immediately set aside. Even if their own explanation cannot explain a series of such incidents. You need direct evidence to convince Social services they do not operate any precautionary principle. A friend reported emotional child abuse to social services, it went uninvestigated. 4 years later he obtained direct evidence and it went before the High Court.
I think there is genuine problem with this methoodology of discounting worries where there is an ordinary explanation.
Can anyone put their finger on the problem?

Looks like Sean or Amelie to me.
I have no idea how old Madeleine is on that photo. Why are you asking?
October 5th, 2007 at 5:57 pm
382- NO, no, I wasn’t accosting you over grammar. I was wondering why you think it’s interesting that some baby pictures of Madeleine had baby pictures of Madeleine in the background.
October 5th, 2007 at 5:55 pm
I think the Find Madeleine website wasn’t started until at least a week after her disappearance. Gerry’s blog began to post within a couple of days after that.

So, what is this? You’re an English Professor now huh?
Go call the Grammar Police and have them arrest me.

And how old Madeline was on this picture when she was sitting next to fire?
Who was sitting next to her? How you know that this was her home and Kate’s + Gary’s home?
October 5th, 2007 at 5:54 pm
I don’t think it matters much if someone claims to be an attorney etc. on this blog, they do not have a corner on the truth or even on logical thinking, infact sometimes being over educated can narrow one’s vision, sometimes (I say this because my ex was such a person). Sleuthing out information that could be relevant is much more important and that knows no profession.
Now, a former Scotland Yard Dectective may add some special insights we are missing, but somehow I doubt it. We’re not missing much. Even opposing view can be helpful.

I am wondering if all your kids are overweight since you mention all the baking going on in your house? Could be viewed as child abuse so be careful. If you wish to defend TB that is your right, I personally think he is a very jaded and needs to focus on doing some real good in the world. Charity work is good for the soul.
October 5th, 2007 at 5:53 pm
And I thought it would be tomorrow before the Leicestershire police issued a denial that they believe Madeleine died in the apartment!!!!!
I knew as soon as I read the article in the online daily Mail this morning (later in the London Standard) that it was likely to be rubbish but I thought we mightn’t get the denial right away. However, we didn’t have long to wait!
When will these ridiculous leaks stop?! This one was clearly NOT from the McCanns’ friends!!
I thought it was hoped they’d stop with Amaral gone?!
By the way, we must assume the PJ have SOME sort of reason for having him an arguido in the torture cover-up case……..er…….mustn’t we? Do they normally make people arguidos without anything more than a vague suspicion…………?? Well, maybe they do.
The man is a suspect protesting his innocence, as are the McCanns. All three must be presumed innocent until charged and convicted by due process of law.
By the way, I do not know how anyone can know if GM had his hair cut on 4th May. I would doubt it.
People have commented on Kate’s appearance at times. I know Rhys Jones’ mother had her hair cut and coloured the day after Rhys was shot because I saw two different interviews/videos over a couple of days. She also wears jewellery, at least when on TV. I imagine female relatives MAKE her do this as it’s one of human beings’ pathetic little attempts to make unbearable suffering just that little bit more bearable and to make the poor woman feel a bit more “normal”, “better” in some way. Most of us would accept that as very understandable and NOT indicative of lack of feeling. I’m sure Kate’s female relatives/friends did the same for her. It’s the way people are, especially women. She could not possibly have continued as she was in the first few couple of weeks. It was unbearable even to see her suffering and it was disgraceful of the TV cameras to show that agony in close-up in the church for example. Arranged interviews were different because they wanted to us ethose to spread the message to look for Madeleine.
Who cut GM’s hair? WAS it cut? HOW do people know?
October 5th, 2007 at 5:51 pm
OK, if Gerry started a BLOG the day after Madeleine disappeared, that is easily more weird than getting a haircut. I think you’re chasing wild geese, Stevo.
October 5th, 2007 at 5:50 pm
370 STEVO, why is that “interesting”? I don’t understand.
October 5th, 2007 at 5:50 pm
357 Stig. You were missing a large part of yesterday - the Cipriano case, Amaral, the PJs incompetence and the slating they have taken - were all discussed at length yesterday. Not being rude, but you may find a lot of your questions and concerns addressed there.
