Madeleine McCann: Kate McCann Becomes Mum
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE – I CRY EVERY DAY SAYS KATE”
“For the first time she reveals her torment” – Kate gives the papers what they want: tears
Pages 6 and 7: “Madleine’s mum: I can’t stop crying” – Kate McCann is no longer Kate McCann; she is above all things Madeleine’s mum
“Obviously nothing can compare with the night Madeleine went missing,” says mum. And Gerry – dad’s – worst moment? “I think when we were made suspects in our own daughter’s disappearance – when the inference was that Madeleine was dead and that, somehow, we were involved…”
Yes…
“But, no it can’t get any worse than that first night…”
DAILY MAIL page 7: “Some days I just can’t stop the tears, says Maddie’s mother”
“Second police chief quits the case” – Tavares Almeida has followed his boss Goncarlo Amaral and left the business of Madeleine McCann to another lucky Portuguese cop
DAILY MIRROR front page: “KATE McCANN SPEAKS AS NEVER BEFORE..Every day felt like a week”
Page 5: “Being named suspects, the idea that we were involved, was terrible. But NOTHING can compare to the trauma of the first night our Madeleine went missing”
Kate is a “locum GP”. Gerry is a “heart specialist”. These are the facts. And they remain unaltered
The couple give an interview as they visit the offices of the Leicester Mercury newspaper, where they are presented with a cheque for £57,000 from the sales of the Madeleine wristbands
THE SUN front page: “KATE’S MADDIE ORDEAL – NOTHING’S AS BAD AS THAT NIGHT. Mum tells of torment”
Page 6: “I weep for Maddie…but we still have hope”
Says Kate McCann: “I’ve had days when if I wasn’t crying for Madeleine, I was crying from the messages people have sent us”
The McCanns “say their lowest point…was when Portuguese police declared them ‘arguidos’ – formal suspects over their daughter’s disappearance”. So not the night Madeleine disappeared, as the Express says?
Gerry is a “cardiologist”
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE – Kate: I cry for my daughter every day”
Page 8 and 9: “Finding Maddie had gone was far worse than being named suspect in killing”
THE TIMES page 14: “The twins are the only part of our lives that are normal”
Kate McCann says: “There is a semblance of normality returning. It’s more normal than it was three weeks ago, Amelie and Sean can see that. But really how can it be normal without Madeleine?”
THE INDEPENDENT page 8: “Second officer steps own from Madeleine inquiry” – Tavares Almeida. Bad Times, as Tavares were wont to say
THE GUARDIAN page 15: “Sacked Madeleine detective’s deputy seeks leave” – Senor Tavares. (Heaven Must be Missing An Angel)
DAILY TELEGRAPH front page: “KATE McCANN: THE DAILY TORMENT OF LIFE WITHOUT MADELEINE”
Page 3: “The McCanns have kept Madeleine’s room the same as it was. The twins are allowed in for a few minutes - “Otherwise, the door remains closed most of the time”
Detectives make notes.

646 come off what keith,do you have any direct irrefutable evidence that implicates the PJ,no i didn’t think so,don’t believe everything that you read in the papers, sometimes it is better to listen to what is in the air, sometimes the truth is all around you if you know how to access it,the only people who think they benefited from that story was the mccann camp, but other people know better.for what it is worth unless the priest coughs and he wont, or they find Madeleine God protect her soul, which they wont,Madeleine will have suffered in vain, her young life used to fill internet forums some good some bad,her parents strutting like celebrities, and at the end of it all Madeleine and justice are the losers as we all are, another nail in the coffin of decency and the Lord said suffer not the little children, does anyone really think he meant it.

Simple take 4 pigs and see what happens when you try and dipose of them - say one at see, one incinerated, one buried and one in an acid bath. See if anyone spots you or anything suspicious.
Everyone should try it.

Here’s a question to pro-McCanns.
Why did the family release a photo of Madeleine taken on May 2 on May 27?
The picture was released shortly after it was revealed that Gerry and Kate McCann are to meet the Pope.
Why wait 25 days to release that photo? (the one of Gerry with the 3 kids and the stranger in sunglasses standing behind them all).

653 Stig ….. Please dont embarass me here, that Fraud (with a capital F) comes from my country …….. NOTHING, but NOTHING that he has ever done has been conclusively proven …. the guy doesn’t even make front page news of our local paper!
One of our well-reputed magazine programmes got him in to try and solve a case of six young girls who’d gone missing within a fairly short space of time 18 years ago (their disappearances have all allegedly been linked to the same man and his girlfriend). This TV programme did this about 2-3 months ago (didn’t even bother watching it), and NOTHING but absolutely NOTHING that the guy supposedly did or found has revealed one snippet more of information as to what happened to these young girls.
Although at the time that he did his “investigation” all the newspapers had their ears pricked for a closing to this very sad case ….. it has dissolved as quickly as a piece of bone in acid!
I believe that the reason that the McCann’s agreed to let him come and do his THING was that he apparently funded his own expenses …. nothing came out of the Madeleine fund … I can almost guarantee you with absolute certainty that if he’d asked for coverage of his expenses, he would never have smelt Praia-da-Luz. Our own police do not have much faith in his “remarkable” discovery, and we are yonks behind the rest of the world. I cannot possibly believe that the PJ even shook his hand when he arrived there!
Sorry, just my personal opinion of someone who is trying to become rich on others sorrow …. don’t work that way in my books!

662. Will,
what have you got against the poor pigs that you want to pickle them in acid all the time?
October 5th, 2007 at 10:23 pm
653 Stig. Unfortunately I think it was an accidental death and for some reason they did not want Madeleine’s body found. I also think that Madeleine’s body has been disposed of - probably by an accomplice - so that it will never be found. By believing nothing will happen without a body the cries of ‘find the body’ can be confidently made. Experts could be drafted in and Lassie was not considered a threat…. because the McCanns believed there would be no body to be found.
So I think that any number of people can look for Madeleine, they will not find her. But I think I know who knows where she is.

I think I’d just ask you how you know.
The paper quoted a “legal source close to the Portuguese investigation” as having provided this titbit. (I hope those words are accurate. It was certainly the Portuguese but it may have said “police” not “investigation”. can’t be bothered going back to check now!)
It might be a clever spin EXCEPT that some people will only have read the original and never reach the amended version. Would the McCanns be happy with that?
There is another downside for the McCanns. It reminds one of the McCanns’ earlier assertions (correct at the time) that the official position of the PJ was that they were NOT suspects. Shortly afterwards they were made suspects. Would they want to remind people of this?
IF it was the McCann spin team, I guess they would not have done it unless certain the UK police do NOT accept the Portuguese suspicion!! They wouldn’t deliberately risk looking even more stupid if the police here did finally come out against them. They must be pretty confident that won’t happen.
Not that I think it WAS the McCann team who said this.
So go on!! How do you know?! Are you a Leicestershire police officer? Clarence Mitchell? A friend of the McCanns? G or K? A press person? A Portuguese officer? Amaral?

BRIEF ANSWERS (AGAIN) TO MARIA
===========================
Maria wrote: “I think it’s important for me to say that I also find it disturbing that a formal campaign should be started to bring down the McCanns”.
REPLY: Once again, Maria, you have added your own inflammatory spin. I do not want to ‘bring down the McCanns’. There are a group of us who feel (1) that the McCanns should be prosecuted for child neglect (1933 Children and Young Persons Act) and (2) that, in order to counteract what I would describe as the ‘Team McCann propaganda machine’, there should be a rival group set up to, inter alia, persuade the McCanns to answer the PJ’s questions - to help the PJ solve the case. For the nth time - never answered by you, Maria, nor any Team McCann supporter - why should an innocent parent who has genuinely lost their chid to an abductor not want to answer every question the police puts to them? The silence from Team McCann and their supporters on this point is deafening
=========================================
Maria wrote: If they are innocent, a campaign such as your could help to make mud stick, Tony. A few “boring ranters” on Anorak, to use Judith C’s term, probably won’t make that much difference and, in any case, opposing views can be expressed on this forum even if some people don’t like that!
REPLY: Given that in a recent YouGov poll, only 1 in 5 of those polled thought the McCanns were innocent of involvement in their daughter’s ‘disappearance’, I doubt very much if any campaign we might mount would make mud stick more than it has already. Much of the mud is of course coming form the PJ. The McCanns, unfortunately for them, made it look like good quality mud because they kept on providing ever more unbelievable explanations in response to all the leaks of the PJ evidence. Once again, I have never yet seen on Anorak a convincing explanation by a McCann supporter of why they did this. All we get is mud being slung at the PJ who are constantly portrayed by Team McCann as blithering idiots or involved in a malicious stitch-up. And mud being slung at those of us McCann-sceptics who do not buy the McCanns’ version of events
========================================
Maria wrote: Tony, on your website, which I haven’t visited, do you invite open discussion or is it only for those who wish to campaign against the McCanns?
REPLY: There is no such website. All I’ve done is given another website address for contact. If it is set up, it will have as much room for pro-McCann comment as the Team McCann website has for McCann-sceptical comment
========================================
Maria wrote: Are you preparing a book on this subject?
REPLY: No. As I have already said. See previous answer a few days ago
========================================
Marai wrote: I don’t wish to be rude, and you have every right, given the law at the moment, to set up your site/campaign but I also have the right to say I find it distateful at this stage of the proceedings.
REPLY: Many many people think the McCanns were involved in the disappearance of Madeleine. Many also think that they should be prosecuted for very significant child neglect. Many are concerned that they have set up a private company, with funds of well over £1 million, not so much to find Madeleine but more to pay for a massive self-defence and promotional campaign. Others are concerned that the Find Madeleine Fund was supposed to be used to help other abducted children, but not a penny has been spent on that to date AFAIK. Still others want to know why the Head of the Media Monitoring Unit of the Foreign Office was despatched to Praia da Luz to spend ‘14 hours a day’ (his words) helping the McCanns and has now been allowed to retire from his civil service post to run the Team McCann media machine. Many of us want to know why our Home Secretary Jacqui Smith - who is there to promote justice - recently called for the PJ to re-focus on the search for Madeleine, when there is no evidence of an abduction apart from what has come out of the McCanns’ own mouths, and the McCanns are official suspects. We think a more appropriate staement under all the circumstances would have been: “I urge the McCanns to fully co-operate with the PJ”. We need a forum in which to discuss these views, especially as the mass media are on the whole denying us a voice at the moment.
I appreciate Maria that, in the eyes of some, to try to set up a campaign of the sort I have described appears vindictive. But I’ve carefully thought out my assessment of this situation and will just have to weather the flak. I want to know what REALLY happened

This is wacky. Remember Kate’s reaction on the radio interview? Listen to what they told Schindler of CBS:
What, Schindler asked, was the first thing that crossed their minds when they came back to the room from dinner and realized that Madeleine wasn’t there?
“I knew straight away she’d been taken,” Kate replied.
“At the first moment?” Schindler asked.
“Well,” Kate responded, “put it this way: I mean, she hadn’t walked out of the apartment.”
“When I got there,” Gerry said, “and Kate told me, and when I looked at the scene as well, I had absolutely no doubt. But, you know, our immediate reaction was to double and triple check, and we did do that, both in the apartment and in the vicinity. And then we said, ‘Call the police.’ And one of our friends alerted both the resort manager and the police.”

I came across something new and interesting - to me anyway. There is often a lot of criticism for the McCanns supposedly not doing stuff to find Madeline.
Well apparently, the McCanns brought in a South African former detective and psychic Danie Krugel who supposedly has a reputation for finding missing children. The McCanns got him to come to PDL before the British police were called in. Supposedly his ‘results’ were influential in the PJ decision to get assistance from the British Police.
I have read stuff that suggests Krugel is a fraud, in terms of his psychic abilities anyway. But I think the interesting thing is that they got him in at all. I would have thought that if they were somehow involved in Madeline’s disappearance that they would not have got in someone who might uncover their involvement. It strikes me as being more consistent with parents who were genuinely hoping to find her and were willing to try even bizarre approaches.
http://tinyurl.com/2z9f8d
The Article also alleges that the British police did not make the suggestions that caused attention to be focused on the McCanns. The PJ had their own suspicions as early as two weeks after Madeleine went missing.
October 5th, 2007 at 10:10 pm
TO ALL THE DEFENDERS: just take a step back, the Pj are rubbish and they are setting the mccanns up, british police dogs (even though highly trained and used around the world) are not to be relied on-DNA means nothing it could be confusing and be from other members of the family-with most of these comments we are not putting the portugese police down we are putting our own police down, plus i dont recall harold shipman having a PR rep or gordon brown making a comment,or richard branson trying to bail him out, he was a trusted doctor BUT HE WAS GUILTY……which ever way we look at it the fact remains they left their kids on their own in a strange unlit apartment while they went to self indulge, now if I was a police man where would I start to look? so come on take the blinkers from your eyes and start to look at the facts…..just like policemen/women do…….as I have said before something big is gonna come out question: why are the portugese government not coming out in defence of the nasty little portugese police….because they are laughing at us they know what we dont………
October 5th, 2007 at 10:10 pm
Then Gerry continues:
“We’re clearly biased,” Gerry admitted, “but Madeleine is as close to the perfect child as you could get, you know, for someone who is so young, less than four when she was taken. She really is amazing. Nothing like this has ever happened — and I mean, going with anyone she didn’t know, for example.”

Portugal awakens to horror of abuse
2003.7.26
Portugal is in the grip of a paedophile scandal involving state-run orphanages, politicians, and TV stars. The allegations involve the organised abuse of children and stretch back 30 years - there is talk of a widespread cover up.
Some social commentators say it represents the greatest upheaval in Portuguese society since the revolution in 1974.
A man, who was a trusted employee at what was one of Portugal’s most respected institutions, is now under arrest after a police investigation launched last November.
Famous names
Casa Pia was founded in 1870 and has cared for some of the country’s most vulnerable children ever since. It now has more than 4,000 pupils, including the deaf and the blind.
But the scandal goes far deeper. Police have questioned a senior socialist politician, two of the country’s most famous TV stars, doctors and lawyers. Almost every week the media reports other famous names alleged to have been involved with the organised abuse of children.
The affair has shocked Portugal - insular and traditional, which emerged from half a century of dictatorship only 30 years ago. “We had the revolution - that was a shock. But the second shock was the Casa Pia case,” says Marcelo Nuno Rebelo de Sousa, a professor of law and social commentator. What is at stake now, he believes, is faith in the rule of law. “Portuguese society looked in the mirror and said we are ugly,” he says. “It is not just solving the Casa Pia case, it’s believing in democracy. It is believing we belong to Europe not just because we are in the European Union, but because we have a democratic system where justice works.”
Reform opportunity
The scandal has also seen an awakening to the wider problems of sexual abuse. The country’s victim support organisation, APAV, has been running TV adverts. Calls to its helpline have significantly increased. “Before Casa Pia” admits APAV’s Claudi Belchior “it was something that would be kept silent for years and years… nowadays they are coming forward to report sexual abuse”. Pedro Namora, a successful lawyer, remembers his days at the Casia Pia orphanage.
Bagao Felix, the government minister responsible for Casa Pia, says it is time for root and branch reform. “When there is a crisis there is always an opportunity - a new way of protecting and educating these young people,” he says.
As for Pedro Namora, asked what he wants for the future he has a simple answer - “Justice”.
October 5th, 2007 at 10:09 pm
Here’s what was said on the CBS Special:
“Madeleine is “pretty,” Kate said. ” … She’s very sociable, very engaging. She’s bright and funny. She does have a sense of danger there.”
“Mm-hmm,” Gerry agreed.

Interesting to re-listen - I was away at the time…
The reporter says that the McCann’s informed the media of their travel plans… Wonder why? Answer to self…. So as to ensure that it didn’t look like they have ’sneaked’ off in the dead of night? Though a quiet exit may have been preferable for the twins? (As and aside, always wondered why they make use of the private jet?)
Gerry said “.. they had played no part in Madelleine’s disappearance.” Splitting hairs here, no mention of her death/demise etc..?
