Madeleine McCann: Danie Krugel Is The Locator, Gerry McCanns The Roof And Paedo Alert
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
NEWS OF THE WORLD front page: “Maddie was alive on beach”
“A renowned international manhunt expert, dubbed The Locator, sensationally revealed he has uncovered a telltale DNA trail left by snatched toddler Maddie McCann”
THE LOCATOR – in the papers and all over Praia da Luz from Sunday (see press for details). Anyone else see a made-for-TV series or a fly-on-the-wall documentary?
Ex-cop Danie Krugel has tracked the “forensic route” he believed her kidnapper took from her Madeleine’s Portuguese holiday apartment. It ends on the beach
Says Krugel: I spent four nights in July carrying out my searches. I’ve been able to trace where Madeleine was in the resort and have drawn a map which has been given to the police.
“I can’t reveal details as I don’t want to alert anyone who might try to disturb the scene. But I believe I’ve traced where she was taken that night and now it’s down to police to use their search experts to do the rest. The area to which my investigation led me is a difficult one to search”
Disturb the scene? The beach at a popular tourist destination made famous by the disappearance of a little girl? Yes, best not disturb that. And tell the wind and the tide to stop, too
A source “close” to the McCanns says: “The work of Mr Krugel should not be underestimated and gives great hope to Gerry and Kate. Many people have contacted the couple to try to help but while their hearts may be in the right place they just don’t have the expertise to be of assistance. But Mr Krugel has a proven record of finding people and his methods are extremely credible”
Like this credible helper. And this one. And this one. And this one…
SUNDAY MIRROR front page: “MADELEINE SENSATION – BOYFINDER CALLED IN”
• McCanns hire leading DNA expert
• He pinpoints area on local beach
• New cops urged to start digging
And fishing…
“Desperate Kate and Gerry McCann” sent a strand of Madeleine’s hair to South African police colonel Danie Krugel. The Locator has located the spot where Madeleine’s body is buried
SUNDAY PEOPLE: “WOMAN WHO COST MADDIE FUND £51K”
“Anguished Gerry McCann sensationally split from the expert masterminding the worldwide hunt for his missing daughter Madeleine after she put in a whopping £20,000 overtime and expenses bill”
PR Justine McGuinness charged Gerry and wife Kate £51,000 for 89 days’ work. “Her basic fee was £350 a day, making a total of £31,000. And the rest was made up in overtime payments and expenses - including bar and restaurant bills”
A source says Gerry saw the bill and “hit the roof”. He was “livid”
So she went. And was replaced by Clarence Mitchell
“Gerry was the only one who wanted Clarence,” readers learn. “He was determined to get him after building a strong relationship with him in Portugal. But nobody else wanted him because he had given Kate and Gerry - what some of the family thought of as - questionable advice”
Can the McCanns’ PRs get a PR before their names and sullied?
SUNDAY EXPRESS front page: “New police chief turns screw on McCanns”
MAIL ON SUNDAY: “MPs demand record of child-tracking devices over paedophile fears”
Oh?
“New laws to regulate the use of high-tech child-tracking devices are being called for by MPs amid fears they could be used by paedophiles and stalkers. The technology is aimed at parents wanting to keep tabs on their children after a series of high-profile child murders and the disappearance of Madeleine McCann”
Maybe all adults should be chipped instead? Or children paedo-proofed - why let it ruin your holiday?
THE TIMES: “Detective who suspected Kate and Gerry McCann may lead hunt”
Luis Neves, 41, is seen as a forerunner to replace Goncarlo Amaral as lead detective. He was seen by the McCanns as a “breath of fresh air” when he joined the inquiry team.
“But he later became convinced she had died in an accident in the McCanns’ apartment”
Or will it be Carlos do Carmo? He has no previous connection with the case, and was Amaral’s predecessor as director of the police in Portimao. The Times says he earned the respect of colleagues after bringing the killer of a police officer to justice
Who will it be: Carmo or Neves? Press your keypads now!
Or C: The British Supercop?
SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: “Police have open minds, insists Kate McCann”
“Kate and Gerry McCann are ‘furious’ at Portuguese police claims that British detectives believe their missing daughter Madeleine is dead”
Says Kate McCann to friends: “The police have told us they have an open mind. Of course we accept it’s possible Madeleine may no longer be alive but we don’t know and nor do the police, so we have to do everything we can to find her”
Clarence Mitchell refuses to comment on “the latest unfounded, unsubstantiated rumours”
A source says: “”Quite how any child would die falling off a sofa is beyond me”
She fell off the sofa? Really…
THE OBSERVER: “Forensic DNA tests ‘reveal traces of Madeleine’s body on resort beach’”
“Retired” South African police superintendent Daniel Krugel is on the beach
Are you?

You may be right. However, many of the companies involved in ’specialist security’ are split into multiple divisions which will include close protection and investigation. Part of their marketing is to claim ex special forces (sounds more glamorous than ex plod) in the Uk this is inveriably SAS and in the USA Navy SEALS. To see how these companies operate it is worth looking at the world leader Blackwater. There is a good wikipedia page on them. Most of there contracts are with the US government.

yep makes good PR. that Iranian Embassy job was class PR and no mistake… Just compare that - live on the telly and for real - not some crap Hollywood history re-write - compare that with Clarrie’s efforts in this fiasco.
I’m stepping back from the detail and getting a mental picture of the whole mess. Do they do courses on PR at university? If so will this pantomime be used as the perfect example of how not to do it? A case study par excellence…

I am sure, though, at least from ALL the media reports, that the Portuguese collected the forensic samples from the car and apartment and sent them to the FSS in Birmingham for analysis.
I think a lot of this increased activity did follow requests from the McCanns who actually kept pushing for more thorough searches for Madeleine, from the early hours of 4th May, from all that I’ve read.
I suppose this constant pushing on their side is one of the reasons why I’ve doubted their guilt. Of course, if the evidence is to the contrary, I will have been wrong in that view!

Agreed - I didn’t suggest the SAS lot were doing the forensics I was making the point that whatever they were doing (in the pay of McConnSpin) had to be outside Portugal. Just like the forensic team lot (in the pay of McConnSpin) had to work outside Portugal. The “SAS” lot would be good at tracking people down and observing people unnoticed. Trouble is - tracking down dead people isn’t what they are used to I would think…

Ex-SAS covers a multitude of sins and makes for good advertising copy when seeking out potential clients.

I am not sure but I thought the Mccanns did hire him when so many people suggested he could help them. As you can imagine, they got hundreds of crank offers to find Madeleine but so many suggested this man that they agreed. I also read that it was the McCanns who suggested that sniffer dogs/UK technical help should be brought in from Britain to help look for their daughter.
What reports can one trust?
However, one of the posters here from SA (possibly Julie but not sure) told us that he is a total fraud. She feels really strongly about him.
I may be getting a few different stories mixed up here, though, so definitely not being dogmatic about it!
So basically……er…….don’t know but would like to!

The new style display works fine for me, on a Mac, I just don’t like the old-fashioned type face

Will- lots of us are having the same problem. My son, much more computer literate than me, tried last night to resolve the problem. Only thing that worked was using Opera instead of Internet Explorer, which is my normal internet option. When I went on Opera last night the blog numbers were there but when I tried to blog it took forever to send.

Cracks me up when I am called anti-McCann. I am not, but I am anti-parasitic spinners and manipulators.

I suspect Krugel is a fraud, they were set up - what revolutionary scientific technique, precisely does he use?:
The former South African detective has an amazing 90 per cent success rate in tracing missing people.
Speaking exclusively to the Sunday Mirror, he said last night: “I’m preparing to fly to Portugal again because the investigation seems to have come to a halt.
“I’m convinced Madeleine’s body is in Praia Da Luz.”
The McCanns turned to him in July to spend a week investigating Madeleine’s disappearance after being deluged with emails from members of the public recommending him as a “genius”.
He said: “Gerry sent me a strand of Madeleine’s hair for DNA purposes, which had been removed from her coat.”
Krugel became a household name in South Africa when he created a DNA tracking device which solved a 19-year mystery about the whereabouts of six schoolgirls snatched by a paedophile.
He told last night how he used the same method to track a potential burial spot for Madeleine on the beach in Praia da Luz.
The area was sealed off and Krugel suggested sniffer dogs be brought in to further pinpoint the spot where they needed to dig. Yet ironically, when the dogs arrived they were used by cops to turn the finger of suspicion on to Gerry and Kate.
Portuguese police were more excited about the dogs’ reaction when they searched the McCanns’ Ocean Club apartment and hire car.”
Having “located” Madeleine in the sand on the beach at Praia da Luz, they didn’t even bother to dig for her?
Really?

Back to this Daniel Krugel chap.
Who employed him? Was it the PJ or the McConns?
I think I read today that McConnSpin hired him - but surely that’s not allowed, just as their “SAS” people are not allowed to do investigation stuff in Portugal. And what about the “forensic team” who stripped the hire car. Were they in the pay of McCannSpin too? In which case that’s not allowed, surely. Unless they took the hire car out of the country.
What the hell is going on here?

I can’t see Dave Snooty and his Pals hiring Comical Clarrie for Tory spinning. What’s the point of spending good money on an arse? More likely he’d pay the comic to spin (incompetently) for Gordie Broon…

Does that possible appointment reassure you that the investigation will be properly pursued? I gather from that report that it’s not yet certain but, if it comes about, it would indicate that the Portuguese have no intention of being deflected by any supposed view in Britain, wouldn’t it?
As you know, I’ve always been sceptical about the view that there is some sort of conspiracy, or, if you don’t like that word, concerted effort among disparate elements of the establishment, to cover up what actually happened. If the McCanns were royalty I might believe it but, as they are just two docs who were on holiday with their kids and afew friends, I really can’t see why there should be political influence to stop the investigation proceeding in a professional manner.
I can certainly see that there might be a concern about some of the ALLEGED methods used to gain confessions, given that Amaral is an arguido suspected of being involved in covering up the torture by some of his colleagues of a woman whose child had disappeared. One must assume that the PJ had SOME reasons for making him a suspect. So, yes, I can see why there might be justified concerns here about his involvement in the Madeleine case.
What I still can’t see is any reason why the British police or politicians might wish to cover up the truth, however unplatable it might be.
Neither can I imagine that our press or other media would really wish to do that. It’s true that most of the “serious” reflective articles have suggested that the Mccanns are innocent and most of but, as you well know (!) most of the papers have been only too happy to cash in on reporting the suspicions of the Portuguese that they were in fact involved. I really don’t think the media will be bothered if the evidence now points to their guilt. In fact, I think they’ll have a field day and if the Pope even remembers (?!) he won’t be in the least bit bothered.
BTW, are you watching the programme on TV now about creationism in schools, ie. whether or not it should be taught alongside the theory of evolution? (Only just started but I think that’s what it’s going to focus on.)

was there any specks of blood?
October 7th, 2007 at 10:06 am
Is Clarence on leave??
Or has David Cameroon hired him to increase the Tory PR spin exponentially now that there is a feelgood factor amongst the Tory grandees?
Anyway, it leaves the door open for Justine to return although her expenses may still be questioned.
57 pounds per hour would make 120K p.a. would be similar to GM salary therefore pay her out of fund.

It’s not just money left in the unlocked apartment. It is passports, plane tickets, contact details for cancellations, spare cash, jewellery, camera, video camera, portable computer.
(Oh, yes, and three small very portable children)
No one ever, anywhere, except by accident, leaves a door in an apartment in a foreign country unlocked and accessible to any passer by.
UNLESS, as I said in a previous entry some time ago ..
The door has no outside handle, and “unlocked” means something different to the Brits from what it does to the Portuguese.
In Spanish for example, the word for closed and locked is the same - cerrado
Open and unlocked are the same - abierto
you have to add “with the key” - con llave - to make the meaning as precise as it is in English.
And as we know a door can be “closed” in english, but “open” as in “Come on in , the door’s open” = not locked.
Do we know anything about the doors ?

I think we are justified. they have shown little sign of repentance or remorse over this matter; but simply they have made e xcuses. If it was you or me I am sure we would be blaming ourselves to everybody.
Edit….. And there is a public interest element in deterring others from doing it.
I think the practice is in fact not illegal and is unregulated. And these are reasons for going on so much about it.
++++++++++++++++
REPLY - Roger, I’m probably closer to you and many others in terms of my feelings about this aspect of the case. I was just trying to make the point to The Real Stig that even if you placed the most generous interpretation possible on events of May 3rd the response/attitude of the McCann’s since is largely what wrankles with many.
Had they themselves dropped out of the limelight, by all means keep Madeleine in the limelight, then I doubt it this aspect of the case would have been receiving so much debate. i.e. They/we/the general public would understand that they were paying a high price (Madeleine’s disappearance) for a baby sitting decision that a significant number of people would never have taken in the first place. There is no real public/society interest served by further pursuing grieving parents in this scenario I would suggest. In fact, and assuming the most generous abduction scenario possible, if a negligence case was ever brought to court, I for one would hope that any sentence would be wholly suspended. i.e. All you need to do is lay down a marker for others (the parents are already suffering enough) that whatever the McCann’s/their supporters may think, their choice of baby sitting service for children of that age is not acceptable.
Instead, one of the family went from grieving parent to world wide spokesperson on child issues in what seemed like less than a heartbeat. Now that really does take some chutzpah in my book!
I’m also not a supporter of the “take the twins away” faction - again, based on the most generous interpretation of the abduction scenario. I was utterly shocked when details emerged of their baby sitting service. I couldn’t believe that any parent would think it acceptable to leave two two year olds and a three year old alone in an unlocked apartment. From comments here and elsewhere it appears that what the McCann’s did was more widespread than I might ever have thought. So, I don’t agree with their baby sitting service, but that on its own does not make them negligent parents. As others who work in the child protection arena have attested to, far worse things happen that go unpunished.
I do agree that once you start getting in to other scenarios, like this being their regular baby sitting service night after night which would open up the possibility of a planned rather than a chance abduction, and some of the other allegations being made (no charges yet), then yes it does become difficult to be so understanding of the McCann’s plight.

“if you have a million quid would you leave in on your bed in an unlocked room”
Interesting question… If the answer is no but you’re quite happy to leave three kids there then there’s one simple conclusion. Three kids are valued at less than a million quid.
