Sir: The resurgence in calls for a return to the death penalty, largely from reactionary, populist journalists is typified by Jon Gaunt’s appearance on the BBCs “This Week” show (28/02/08). This self-professed ‘man of the people’ began his spurious argument by labelling MPs, presumably both those in favour of and against his sensationalist opinions, as “self-serving pigs”. This erudite evaluation of the political classes set the tone for the rest of his embittered argument.
The crux of his reasoning was that society should be able to seek revenge for atrocious acts perpetrated by serial killers, paedophiles etc. His analogy of destroying dogs that attack humans clearly demonstrates that proponents of capital punishment lack a sophisticated enough world view to understand such acts as ills of society, and so prefer to label them ills of individuals. This way society as a whole bears no responsibility, and leads to a belief that we can distance ourselves from the darker side of humanity by seeking revenge. On the contrary, such motivations are clearly embracing the malicious aspects of human nature that they claim to abhor. A man who condemns violence in one breath, and argues for a sadistic practice such as hanging in the next is so self-contradictory as to be a living paradox.
“The British public wants this…There’s fear out there!” claims a man who has helped to fuel ignorant, fear-driven responses to modern societal problems. By his own admittance, arguments of prevention and making the populace safer do not hold any weight, and it is a purely punitive and revenge-driven agenda.
Admittedly, one does not expect any less from such so-called ‘journalists’, but these harbingers of doom and fear, masquerading as the informed right all have one characteristic in common. This is a clear inability to view the problems of society in an objective, holistic, and informed manner. Instead they allow their confusion over such complex issues to regress them to a lower intellectual state, dependant on the baser emotions and instincts of the unenlightened human mind. The more concise and considered the opposing information, the more angry, confused, and incomprehensible they become, and the more they seek to propagate their views in order to justify their beliefs.
Two telling facts about those fervently preaching for the death penalty are that they either deny that any miscarriages of justice could occur or that so few innocent people would be executed that it would be justifiable, and that such punishment should be extended to young men, that is to say, children. What sort of society abandons troubled young men who do not willingly conform, then puts them to death when this abandonment manifests as violent crime resulting in the death of others?
A more analytical approach, such as that of Joan Smith’s article in the Independent (28/02/08) is what is required, and should be expected.
To sum up using pedantic semantics, revenge is something harmful done in return for an injury or wrong, and the meaning of harm is a bad effect. Ultimately, spiteful little men such as Jon Gaunt are advocating bad effects in order to redress bad effects, by their own definition.
If the majority of voters really do want the death penalty reinstated, as is claimed, then for once I am glad that the politicians are not acting on the wishes of the people.

Hving read many forum posts about gaunt its hard to fathom out why he is still employed by talk sport the entire output from day to day seems to be illegal immigrants paedofiles feral youths add nausium his insults to callers makes the show unlistenable and no matter how many times he utters the words “I AM NOT A RACIST” the more it incites racial tension if ever anyone had a face for radio its gaunt its just a pity he hasnt got a voice to go with it

John Gaunt is a very shrewd and a clever peron.Is he is a bigot and a racist?.
Don’t forget he presents a show on a right wing radio station and writes in a right wing newspaper.
His role is to appeal to the majority of people who listen to such radio stations (white working class white van drivers).
His sole aim is to be popular ,it is as though he transforms himself into a character to appeal to his listners.
The sad thing is he does’nt care that he is causing hatred and divisions between communities,for his own ambitions nothing will hold him back to be a controversial presenter.
So i dont think he is a racist,but without any doubt he plays with the narrow mind of his majority listeners,they consider him to be their voice on immigration ,assylum seekers and muslims.
Any excuse to muslim bash will see his studio telephone lines light up.
Dont forget John was once down and out as a failed business man,he has been given a second chance and he will not let anybody get in the way of his success.
I ask talk radio whether or not they have some resposibility for this presenter who can have listners ,who consider it perfectly acceptable to ‘wipe out a whole generation of families ‘ for the supposed wrong doing of one family member (those that listened to him today will know what i mean)>

Great site, glad I found it. So please to discover that I am not alone in despising th fat, loudmouthed, ingratiating (”I salute you”to every serviceman/woman)(sucking up to ex-cons), bigoted, talentless, rude, oafish little twat.
The late great Mike Dicken must be turning in his grave to see that his 1oam to 1pm slot has been given to such a no mark as Gaunt.
It would be nice to do a survey, show is on air 10am to 1pm, count up minutes of news, traffic reports and adverts, the incessant stories about him, his lifestyle and boring family (God help them!!!having to suffer this oik on a daily basis)leaving the remainder to gobshite v listeners, seeing as he always interupts and does not letcallers finish their points, the greatmajority of the show is loud mouth forcing his unwanted views and opinions on the airwaves.
Plea to Talksport directors - fofr the sake of the ntion, transfer Gaunt to somewhere well away from the UK, Siberia looks good.
Do us all afavour please, please, please.
Incidentally re viewing figures, from the metality of a lot of the callers; they are surely the feckless, feral yobs he claims to despise so much!!!!!!

What gets me about Gaunt is that he keeps saying he’s working class, but his dad was a copper and I didn’t think that was working class, and he could afford a nightclub, where did the money come from,(I had a friend who owned a small nightclub and it cost a million) and he went to Bluecoats, which is a posh school.
He brags he’s the most complained about, I made a complaint to Ofcom and they replied with complete nonsense, their description of events were wronge, their reply implied Gaunt committed a criminal offence but took no action.
It seems to me his style is to disclaim responsibility and then choose the callers to forward his views.
Finally its the pot calling the kettle black when he accuses some of lazyness when he is continually on holiday.

On BBC Radio Jon Gaunt attracted many racist callers. His follower on the programme Vanessa Feltz does not attract racists…ever. That says volumes about Jon Gaunt. As for the comments above that he made mincmeat of Ken Livingston on the londo show. Absolute nonsense! He like to think he did but Livingston can, and does deal with interviewers much more powerful than Gaunt. Gaunt was and is deluded. He is a sad little man, and I’m not referring to his body here, like all extreme right wing people. They work on ignorance and fear. British radio would be better of without him. Unfortunately radio stations such as TalkSport hire people on listening figures which has nothing to do with quality. listening numbers make them money so trash rules. Gaunt longs for the old values but in spouting his drivel helps to lose them.

When Gaunt yaps on and on about hating black people and immigration does he forget that for Britain to be called “Great Britain” was because of the contribution of immigrants, mostly black immigrants - to allow him the comforts that he enjoys today?

I just wish all the immigrants in this country could all leave Britain for a day, and see his face as everything will come to a standstill and fall apart. I cant really understand that some people are so short sighted in their racist minds that they cant see the truth for what it is. All this immigrant baiting makes me so sick. Its time it comes to a stop. Are the Dole Scum who walk around the streets with bottles of cider and pitbulls in designer gear prepared to go out and fill the jobs that the foreigners are doing and forsake their birthright of incapacity benefits and welfare benefits? You Jon Gaunt have no place to make comments about whether Lewis Hamilton is black. It hurts you to admit that black can be excellent. Of course he is black and more importantly, he classifies himself as black. Black people are happy to be associated with their mixed race children, which is not the case with most whites except when the person is exceptionally successful. Shame on you Gaunty I think all that fat surrounding your body is full of poisonous stuff and u spend all your energy creating hate among races. Unfortunately u cannot reverse the globalisation of the world - it is real and u gotta come to terms with it. There will never be a white Britain again, so get on with it!!
