RUGBY World Cup: Letters to the Telegraph:
SIR - I believe the strange phrase “England flag” results from the inexplicable preference for emblazoning the English flag with the pointless word England.
Like all heraldic devices, flags are a language in themselves, designed for instant recognition in the field of battle and elsewhere. They may be understood even by the illiterate.
I have yet to see a tricolour with “France” written on it, or a stars and stripes with “USA”.
Graham Beard, Liverpool
