Madeleine McCann: When Waiters Attack, Kate McCann Childcare Inc. And Feudal Powers
MADDY WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE – ‘McCANNS OR A FRIEND MUST BE TO BLAME’. Tapas bar waiter’s astonishing attack”
Jose Batista served the McCanns and party on that night Madeleine disappeared. “I did not think she had been taken by an abductor,” says he. “I told them [the police] it had to be one of the family or a friend. It had to be someone close”
Mr Batista is a “crucial eyewitness”
Page 4: “Nanny would have cost just £10” – Batista is standing with his “partner” Maria Fernandes, who also works at the Ocean Club complex. She does not speak. She smiles for the camera. Why is she there? They are holding hands. He says the Tapas 9 did check on their children regularly: “I know that because I often took food to the table and found one of them not there. I would take it back to the table to heat it up. But it was always the men who went to check never the women.” Apart from the time Kate McCann went to check. So not always the men. Jose thought that strange. Why?
Says he: “They left heir children alone. If I had been in that position I certainly wouldn’t have done that.” Maria smiles
“Kate may be a child carer after ruling out GP work” – But would she make living at it?
THE SUN front page: “MADDIE EXCLUSIVE: WHAT WAITERS SAW. Kate left kids alone 3 hours a night”
It’s Jose Baptista, not to be confused with the Express’s Jose Batista, even if this waiter does look very similar and is seen holding hands with his “wife”, also called Maria
Pages 4 and 5: “The men normally checked on kids..Kate only went that one night”
Kate and Gerry are “doctors”. Says Jose: “They left their children alone for up to three hours every night.” Apart from when they all went out as family, with the “cranky” children
Maria speaks: “I definitely remember Madeleine. She was like a little angel, very quiet and good as gold. Just a lovely little blonde girl.” Blonde, you say?
“CAREER PLANS STILL ON HOLD”
DAILY STAR page 7: “holiday waiter describes horror night girl vanished – MADDIE: ‘ONLY PARENTS OR PALS COULD HAVE DONE IT’” – Jose Batista says…
“Kate wants job in child care”
DAILY MAIL front page: “I want to work in child care says Maddie’s mother”
Page 7: “Kate McCann ‘wants a job in child welfare’” – So it is “claimed”. So she ahs “told friends”
“FRIENDS ‘SHARED EIGHT BOTTLES OF WINE A NIGHT’” – Says Jose Baptista. Yes, eight bottles between nine Britons. On holiday. In the sun. Indeed, is that all?
DAILY TELEGRAPH page 9: “Madeleine’s mother ‘to as GP for a child welfare job’”
“One possibility is that she will set up a charity to raise awareness of the extent of child abductions across Europe, and help parents and children who suffer such an ordeal”
Fernando Jose Pinto Montiero, Portugal’s attorney general, says the country’s Ministerio Publico, likened to the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service, is a “feudal power”

And didn’t one of the Tapas 9 (David Payne?) say something just as odd, like ‘we were expecting something to happen, but not this’ ?

Slyfox, Brian has it enlarged (but blurry) on page 11 of the Madeleine section (or maybe page 10). But it IS hard to see. The first time I saw it enlarged I saw plain as day a guy with a camera lens. Other times I’ve looked, it feels too blurry to see anything with clarity. I’ve never seen a toddler, though.

753- I read that somewhere, too, that Kate cried something about how it wasn’t supposed to happen like this. I think there is absolutely no way of knowing what Kate said that night. One of the nannies insists she first said “Madeleine is missing, Madeleine is missing” and NEVER said “They’ve taken her.” So who knows what Kate said. None of what “Kate said” the night M went missing can be used in this case because it’s too uncertain. and at this point, the memory is too far away , we can’t rely on any witness testimony for that, really.

The bed was found undisturbed most likely because 1. Madeleine was killed before getting into bed, or 2. someone changed the sheets and re-made the bed to hide dna, etc. that would have been there, and in their haste and/or panic, forgot to “disturb” the sheets to make it look like Madeleine had slept there. This may be one of the questions the police have for the McCanns, and so the paid, pro-media McCann team is anticipating this, and has already leaked out its crafted answer. And so, they can also now measure how well their answer works on the general public.

No, no, no. If you look at the “charity’s” legal setup, you’ll likely find that the “charitable purpose” includes benefits that can extend to any member of the McCann family.
this is very typical in any kind of such a trust.
They’ve known this from the start. And no, if Madeleine’s found dead, or never appears again, they likely don’t have to give the money back at all. And it’s all perfectly legal.

706: “I remember that Mrs McS was quoted as saying, when she ran back to the Tapas bar: ‘It wasn’t supposed to be like this!’” I’ve read this before and wondered if it has been verified that KM said this. If she did, that’s very significant. Shouting, “They’ve taken her!” can reasonably be explained away as having been the raving of an hysterical woman. But “It wasn’t supposed to be like this” makes no sense at all if Madeleine truly had been abducted.

Kris (738) … don’t worry …. you’re not the only one who doesn’t see a “child” in that photograph, it also appears to me as if someone is crouching behind the climbing thing … I also get the chills when I look at that photo, I’ve tried to enlarge that particular section but it only gets more blurred.
C’mon Stevo help out here ?

745 Jolie, living expenses will, most probably, include the Mortgage.

Stevo, up to the age of 13, I was one of the tallest in my class. I remember being surprised when other girls who were significantly smaller began to pass me out as I grew older. I have 3 daughters . One at four was practically the same height as her six year old sister. Indeed truth be told she was one of the tallest in her class, in much the same way her sister was one of the smallest. Today they are young women and guess what ,we are all the same height, a common average5′6. My point? Children grow at different rates. It is not only silly but unfair to attempt to diagnose children on the basis of one or two features. There are experts better skilled at that. Furthermore I find the implication that some”difficulty” would constitute motive insulting to mothers in general. A mothers love or indeed a fathers doesn’t come with conditions. Quite the opposite.

Sorry. The last post should say:
Going out boozing without the kids being supervised. No one should take the kids out boozing…

Unless Team McCann is talking about an unregistered child care such as what you might run out of your own house, with no insurance or oversight, what Kate and her minders may be considering is to creat an offshoot “children’s charity” running out the million or so that is in the McCanns’ family charity. That money can legally be used to benefit Madeleine McCann, and also “members of the McCann family.”
Kate could legally pay herself a salary from these donations, and the donations themselves could be used to set up investment accounts in ordinary, say, hedge or mutual funds.
They’re leaking it out now, to see how this idea will “ride” with the public, who is donating the money. Kate could easily pay herself a “salary” of, say, $50 k a year, and the fund would just keep replenishing itself. She could do what Gerry did, junket around, attend conferences, lecture us all on our missing children, blah blah blah….
Yes, they are wiley critters, these McCanns.
Perhaps the PJ should start looking into how successful their medical careers really were, and not take anything at face value.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:54 pm
726 - bulldump - Why. The money was donated to help fund Madeleine not to finance the McCanns lazyness. If they were doing anything to help find Madeline then fair enough, but they haven’t done anything to that end yet. They are using the money under false pretenses.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:54 pm
Slyfox- He seems to now think it’s a big conspiracy, involving Murat, which is what some here are also suggesting this morning, including (possibly) Third Way. I would say this is as likely as anything. Gerry, O’Brien and Murat, all in cahoots. But the photo you mention is really bizarre- Brian did in fact post that and had it blown up on his site.
So who do YOU think the guy with the camera is?

I thought I had read somewhere that a donor was picking up the tab on the McCann’s mortgage payments but when I did a search, I couldn’t find it. Perhaps it was just a rumor. If the living expenses includes the mortgage–wow–that’s a lot of money being used from donations. I’m sure a lot of people who donated are sorry they did, by now.
I was aware of the family’s living expenses coming out of the fund, though; I just thought the mortgage payments didn’t come out of the fund.
Can anyone clarify that for me?
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:54 pm
Been trying to work out what it is about the parents that makes me suspicious of them. Although there are many things, it really boils down to something very simple:
The unlocked door of their apartment.
Going out boozing without the kids is horrendous enough. Going out and leaving the door unlocked…I don’t believe they actually did that. If there had been signs of a forced entry into that apartment I don’t think they would be where they are now.

735 maria, you seem to have a little bit missing in the perceptive area of your brain my love. One was talking about Gerry (who seems mostly to read written down notes) and the other about Kate (mother of the year nominee) who in the womans hour interview said ‘I mean’ as a gap filler a lot.

I tried to read Brian’s blog in the earlier days but I found it confusing plus If I remember correctly he seemed to be saying that…oh yes!…that Madeleine was abducted and that Murat was involved. Gotcha.
715 Rosemary
That is one odd photo isn’t it..I can’t thinbk of any good reason for the sneaky peek photo because there is no sign of a child playing inside that frame plus the camera seems to be aiming through the gap.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:50 pm
728, desperately sorry for a suspect in a child ‘abduction possibly worse’ case? What next!
I suspect her of direct responsibility - for a start, what kind of Mother leaves these little kids like that? Second, didnt you see the evil eye video?
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:50 pm
727- STevo. The guy taking the photo is behind the plastic castle. Funny you see a toddler with a lilac top. I see a face with a camera pointed right in the direction of Madeleine. When I saw this, it gave me goosebumps, it was clear as day. Others dont’ see the same thing, though.

Haha, just had to laugh at Edna’s post of earlier regarding the taxes in Portugal. She’s complaining they get taxed as high as 21 %! DON’T every move to South Africa then, our tax ceiling is 45 %, your middle class tax earner is on about the 41 % tax bracket!
