MADDY WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE – 70% DON’T BELIEVE McCANNS”
The McCanns are on the TV in Spain. The show is followed by a phone vote. The people vote, at least some of them do; how many, we are not told. One, two, three..? Gerry is a “cardiologist”
Pages 4 and 5: “Police: Parents are hampering probe.” Angel Galan, head of the Spanish National Police’s kidnap, extortion and murder squad says: “There is no real information to indicate that Madeleine could be in Spain although Mr and Mrs McCann might think so. I think the question is why couldn’t she be in France or in the UK? Why does it have to be Spain, Portugal or Morocco?”
“Drawing that could catch her abductor” – an artist’s impression of a man carrying a child in the vicinity of the McCanns holiday complex on May 3. The man is of average height, of average build, with dark hair and with his facial features not filled in. Do you know him?
The artist was commissioned by the McCanns in light of a person their friend Jane Tanner said she saw on the night Madeleine disappeared
THE SUN front page: “PICTURE SENSATION. He took Maddie – MAN SEEN BY McCANNS’ PAL ON FATEFUL NIGHT”
A drawing of a man. The caption: “Hunted…a drawing of man with child in his arms as seen by Jane Tanner”
Page 13: “MADDIE IN ARMS OF SNATCHER. Pyjamas ‘prove it is her’” – The man is 5ft 6. He is 5ft 10 in the Express. He is “slim”. The girl is wearing pink and white pyjamas. The man is in a maroon shirt, camel coloured trousers and black or brown shoes
Says Clarence Mitchell: “We hope this will go a long was to proving the independent eyewitness account that she was taken by someone and the police’s focus on Kate and Gerry as potential suspects is wrong”. See drawing of a man seen by McCanns’ friend
And: “We believe it does show Madeleine in his arms. The description of the pyjamas is accurate enough to believe that is the case.” The McCanns’ friend sees the girl wearing pyjamas like those worn by Madeleine, whom she knows
“GERRY BACK AT WORK” – Gerry McCann is a “cardiologist” – lest we ever forget
DAILY MIRROR front page: “This is the man who took our Madeleine. PARENTS RELEASE SKETCH”
Page 11: “’He was slim with untidy black hair, plastered back. He was hurrying with a child in pink pyjajmaas’” (No songs please)
“’KIDNAPPER’ SEEN BY KATE’S PAL”
Paul Routledge: “All I want to do is put my arms around her and say: ‘there, there’ while she sobs out her grief on my shoulder”
DAILY MAIL front page: “Friends’ fears for ‘increasingly fragile’ Kate”
Pages 8 and 9: “Is Kate at breaking point?” – If she cracks up will the papers like her better? “Friends fear for Maddie’s mother after TV ordeal”
“SPANISH EYES” – The McCanns have launched a private “proxy investigation” in Spain. Under Portuguese law it is illegal to use private detectives while an investigation is ongoing
The mystery man who may have taken her” – Mrs Tanner sees the man. She is later “racked with guilt”
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE PARENTS ‘HIDING TRUTH’ – 70 per cent of TV viewers thinks McCanns are lying”
Pages 4 and 5: “BODY LANGUAGE SPECIALIST GIVES HIS VERDICT ON KATE – ‘MUM WOULD BE VERY GOOD POKER PLAYER’.” Robert Phipps watches the interview with Kate McCann on Spanish TV. She is frowning, and expert Phipps says this is indicative of “pain” and stress. Who knew? We do not know if he then voted in the subsequent poll
THE TIMES front page: “Madeleine ‘abductor’” – The white man is of “medium build”
Page 9: “’This is the man who took Madeleine away’” – The Times says the new picture bears “no resemblance to Robert Murat”. The picture has been handed to the McCanns’ detectives who are operating across Europe and North Africa
DAILY TELEGRAPH front page: “Madeleine ‘abductor’” – This is the man Jane Tanner says she saw at 9:15pm on May 3

462 Karen, spot on.
Notice they dont show which way this mystery person is going - that would be too difficult to alter later.
Anyone got the original claims from Tanner?
October 26th, 2007 at 2:59 pm
482 reinforces my point which i didn’t even research. I just used my american TV cop hunch

I have worked it all out.
We are definitely part of the largest human experiment ever recorded.
With information able to travel at the speed of we all have access to mulitple streams of information.
It is necessary for the ruling powers (give it your own name) to do a census on the people in their control.
How easy is it to bombard them with information so rapidly that the brain has to accept it as truth?
How easy is it to manipulate them with non stop photo opportunities to keep them engaged for ages.
How many of them can we catch their full attention, so they are completely blind to what else is happening on their doorstep.
How dangerous is this weapon called the internet and what could we do to make it SAFE (that European craving for safety).
My personal experience here on this forum has been fascinating.
Moving completely away from my usual news websites and blogs to this particular arena.
I declare that for 6 weeks I did not look up anything else.
I sat behind my keyboard, possessed, questions, questions.
I would wake in the middle of the night thinking about his saga.
It is said what you put your mind to is what you become.
And I saw that I was baying for blood. In my heart of hearts I believed them to be guilty because I wanted them to be guilty. I wanted to punish them and beat them up and make them suffer, because they had been fed to me by this propaganda machine in such large amounts that I hated them.
The Americans did this to the Russians during the cold war and vice versa.
This entire forum (the regulars) are mostly anti, with Stig and Cool and Calm being different.
It matters not what information we are given, we are incapable of seeing it.
So successful is the blasting that we remain in a state of hatred and in this way can fuel anything.
Let us put all our hatred and scorning onto this couple,
and yet we so seldom put it on our inefficient, crass governments.
So this grand experiment continues.
Last night I awoke and the African moon hung suspended in this beautiful night sky.
I asked myself if I could wave a wand and make something true - would I make them innocent or guilty .
I was so relieved to find that I had recovered my humanness.

Karen - agree with you 100% about ??? - obviously not what he/she claims, and certainly not adding anything worthwhile to our discussions here!
October 26th, 2007 at 2:58 pm
470 Garth, you cannot make up evidence to prompt responses, its farcical.
Maybe someone should draw a picture of Mccann carrying suitcases to the Scenic? Unloading something from a car with a spanish background?
They are trying to distract and divert, they are the cause of the confusion without a doubt, with all their ‘friends close to the mccanns’ rebuttals etc.
They need to be careful, there is a charge ‘Perverting or obstructing the course of justice/police investigation’. They wouldnt egt away with it if they had ‘lost’ their child in the UK, thats for sure.

One more the Daily Mail is spreading hate against the Portuguese… this is getting inhuman!
PURE LYES!!!
Check on-line the main portuguese newspapers and TV:
publico.pt, jn.pt, expresso.pt, sic.pt, rtp.pt, tvi.pt and see with your own eyes the Noticias (news) section!
The only one with McCanns news is the Correio da Manha, just citing a Spanish crime specialist comment about Kate’s tears, and the 24Horas that everyday has something about the McCanns. But these two newspapers aren’t very “famous” in Portugal!
And please do not confuse Portuguese press with Spanish press.

Kates crying.
My missus is not a hard hearted woman, in fact the opposite.
I have seen her cry 3 times in 8 years. Once was my fault when we had a row, another when we had a row and it was her fault and the last time when our cat died.
It took her and myself several weeks to get back to normal.
You cant fake that honesty and Kate is a bad actress.

???
I just looked up criminal psychology and you used the exact description that’s on Wikipedia. Busted.
I’m a student - you can’t fool us, we’re all over the damn internet stealing info.
October 26th, 2007 at 2:57 pm
i am a criminal psychologist NOT a forensic psychologist. 2 very different fields!

454 Good point Hutch.
But there’s a simple explanation.
Madeleine was dead when she ‘disappeared’, therefore everybody would be making things up so far as the pyjamas/nightdress was concerned.
Jabe Tanner would have been asked by the PJ: “Did you see anything of the child that the man might have been carrying”. She would have mumbled something like: “Well, not really, didn’t get a clear view”.
Only after she got her head together with ‘mastermind’ Gerry McCann could she be given - by him - the correct nightwear to mention in her statement to the PJ. Perhaps that’s why she came up with the ‘blanket’ idea - which has mysteriously disappeared from the artist’s impression of the suspect now that we are at Day 175 from her ‘disappearannce’

Very depressed with your post and I believe you. It is a sorry day for justice for Madeleine, if you are right.

As a kid, if I had lied and told stories to the extent of the McCanns, my parents would have leathered my arse…… Edit…..
+++++++++++++++++++
Careful Stevo… The psychobabble experts will soon be declaring that your ‘issue’ with the McCann’s is re-directed anger/unresolved issues regarding your own childhood!
October 26th, 2007 at 2:55 pm
474 - also Kate says to the twins,”everybody is looking for her” errrrr, hold on Kate, not quite everybody is it???
October 26th, 2007 at 2:55 pm
You are very abbusive. I thought this was a site where you can voice your opinions. God knows why I offend you so much. If only you knew!!!
October 26th, 2007 at 2:54 pm
448 Garth…you get real!
It should be what was ACTUALLY SEEN not someone making it up to suit the circumstance!
There was no mention originally of seeing clearly that the bundle was a child, now we have hanging legs! Its a farce and ALMOST everyone see’s it for what it is. I call it ‘perverting the course of justice’
Actually I believe someone else saw this guy earlier, and he was carrying something else.

346 Stevo, yes I also think that Kate reacts more emotionally when the twins ask about Madeleine than more directly. That also came through in the interview on Woman’s Hour. Was Madeleine a loved child I wonder?
Her reply to their questions ‘We are finding Madeleine’ sounds like SPIN for her own children!. I have said she could be saying -We are FindingMadeline .com and if they do not find her, then will the twins be able to trust them. Surely ‘trying to find’ should be the message.
October 26th, 2007 at 2:53 pm
Michael sounds as angry as Dr G P McCann.
October 26th, 2007 at 2:53 pm
These “forensic experts” that come in here are just team mc cann lovers coming here to try and influence our free thinking. I’m afraid anyone can troll through the internet and quote text in a non contextual way and be found out as frauds for not understansding what they are saying… Move along, there’s nothing to see
October 26th, 2007 at 2:53 pm
Michael, how come you have time to read all the crap we write and comment on it?
October 26th, 2007 at 2:52 pm
Hutch 454
I don’t know what leaked information we’ve been given to be true or not. I thought initially she only saw someone carrying a blanket. And then it was possibly a child. If the truth be known I guess her initial sighting was of someone carrying a blanket. But after Madeleine went missing it became more apparent that it was actually a child. Not an accurate sighting maybe but putting together an image now with a person carrying a child with pink pyjamas with ‘frilly bits’ at the bottom just might open a new lead.
I’m totally amazed its taken this long to put it together. Personally I think its a bloody shambles.
October 26th, 2007 at 2:52 pm
Michael, why are you so bitter?
And who are you to tell anyone else what to do?
This case is so crippled by the parents who seem to have split personalities. If they are guilty of a cover-up, then they are enemies of our well-ordered society and must be taken care of.
GOT IT BUSTER???

And from Stig’s posting about that article, is Stig suggesting that Madeleine would be abducted from that apartment and half an hour later still be sleeping if she wasn’t sedated?
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Well, I don’t know what Stig thinks about it, I don’t think he’s commented about that?
If the alleged sighting is true, the child could be in any number of ‘states’ – asleep, sedated, comatose, dead, etc. Don’t think we can tell this from the ‘artists impression’
As other have noted, it’s quite an odd way to carry a child. A child who is not awake is quite literally a ‘dead weight’ (no, it’s not meant to be satirical!). I always carry my children with them resting/snuggled against my shoulder, one hand under them and one hand around them. But maybe I’m just ‘odd’.
October 26th, 2007 at 2:51 pm
???
That what are you doing interacting with the criminal justice system?
Sorry, ???, you were probably used as much by the police as your local Mystic Meg.
October 26th, 2007 at 2:50 pm
Garth, you might be correct in your thought that the PJ frills were added to “jog” people’s memories. But is there not a slight problem here?
If the sighting was real, shouldn’t they be sticking as close to the actual sighting so as to possibly eliminate the faceless man? Your idea only works if it was definitely Madeleine, and, as nobody is, altering the description could possibly be misleading.
What they have done is almost to conflate the description of the man carrying a kid with Madeleine’s last known appearance.

“how would the child usually react? would they hide under the covers and wait for their return or would it be more of an instinct to try to go find them? I still dont know what happened as none of us do, but wandering off seems odd to me”
I don’t believe in wandering off either. Don’t forget about the twins. The presence of her siblings would give the child a feeling that she is not completely alone, so she would stay with them.
October 26th, 2007 at 2:50 pm
459 - Michael, I’d love to go and find madeleine, unfortunately I have a child to look after here in UK….but, you seem to have free time so why no go yourself!
October 26th, 2007 at 2:50 pm
“do none of you work” Typical team mc cann slur when they can’t actually pick us apart logically. Hurl insults instead, that’ll do the trick!
I’m a retired 70’s TV cop, don’t you know ANYTHING?
October 26th, 2007 at 2:49 pm
I’m naive Garth? You’re saying they’re deliberately lying to give the impression that Madeleine was seen with that unknown man.
If that wasn’t Madeleine - it’s a false lead that could ruin the investigation or get an innocent person convicted (although - it isn’t credible enough, so maybe it’s only purpose is to make McCann groupies happy).
October 26th, 2007 at 2:48 pm
455 Jane Tanner may suffer from something called ’selective amnesia syndrome’.
There a known cause for it.
Lying

Reward Money.
I missed the first month or so of this case. Does anyone remember the exact terms of the reward money?
