Madeleine McCann: Jane Tanner’s eFit, A Spanish Angel And Wearing Pink Pyjamas
MADDY WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE – 70% DON’T BELIEVE McCANNS”
The McCanns are on the TV in Spain. The show is followed by a phone vote. The people vote, at least some of them do; how many, we are not told. One, two, three..? Gerry is a “cardiologist”
Pages 4 and 5: “Police: Parents are hampering probe.” Angel Galan, head of the Spanish National Police’s kidnap, extortion and murder squad says: “There is no real information to indicate that Madeleine could be in Spain although Mr and Mrs McCann might think so. I think the question is why couldn’t she be in France or in the UK? Why does it have to be Spain, Portugal or Morocco?”
“Drawing that could catch her abductor” – an artist’s impression of a man carrying a child in the vicinity of the McCanns holiday complex on May 3. The man is of average height, of average build, with dark hair and with his facial features not filled in. Do you know him?
The artist was commissioned by the McCanns in light of a person their friend Jane Tanner said she saw on the night Madeleine disappeared
THE SUN front page: “PICTURE SENSATION. He took Maddie – MAN SEEN BY McCANNS’ PAL ON FATEFUL NIGHT”
A drawing of a man. The caption: “Hunted…a drawing of man with child in his arms as seen by Jane Tanner”
Page 13: “MADDIE IN ARMS OF SNATCHER. Pyjamas ‘prove it is her’” – The man is 5ft 6. He is 5ft 10 in the Express. He is “slim”. The girl is wearing pink and white pyjamas. The man is in a maroon shirt, camel coloured trousers and black or brown shoes
Says Clarence Mitchell: “We hope this will go a long was to proving the independent eyewitness account that she was taken by someone and the police’s focus on Kate and Gerry as potential suspects is wrong”. See drawing of a man seen by McCanns’ friend
And: “We believe it does show Madeleine in his arms. The description of the pyjamas is accurate enough to believe that is the case.” The McCanns’ friend sees the girl wearing pyjamas like those worn by Madeleine, whom she knows
“GERRY BACK AT WORK” – Gerry McCann is a “cardiologist” – lest we ever forget
DAILY MIRROR front page: “This is the man who took our Madeleine. PARENTS RELEASE SKETCH”
Page 11: “’He was slim with untidy black hair, plastered back. He was hurrying with a child in pink pyjajmaas’” (No songs please)
“’KIDNAPPER’ SEEN BY KATE’S PAL”
Paul Routledge: “All I want to do is put my arms around her and say: ‘there, there’ while she sobs out her grief on my shoulder”
DAILY MAIL front page: “Friends’ fears for ‘increasingly fragile’ Kate”
Pages 8 and 9: “Is Kate at breaking point?” – If she cracks up will the papers like her better? “Friends fear for Maddie’s mother after TV ordeal”
“SPANISH EYES” – The McCanns have launched a private “proxy investigation” in Spain. Under Portuguese law it is illegal to use private detectives while an investigation is ongoing
The mystery man who may have taken her” – Mrs Tanner sees the man. She is later “racked with guilt”
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE PARENTS ‘HIDING TRUTH’ – 70 per cent of TV viewers thinks McCanns are lying”
Pages 4 and 5: “BODY LANGUAGE SPECIALIST GIVES HIS VERDICT ON KATE – ‘MUM WOULD BE VERY GOOD POKER PLAYER’.” Robert Phipps watches the interview with Kate McCann on Spanish TV. She is frowning, and expert Phipps says this is indicative of “pain” and stress. Who knew? We do not know if he then voted in the subsequent poll
THE TIMES front page: “Madeleine ‘abductor’” – The white man is of “medium build”
Page 9: “’This is the man who took Madeleine away’” – The Times says the new picture bears “no resemblance to Robert Murat”. The picture has been handed to the McCanns’ detectives who are operating across Europe and North Africa
DAILY TELEGRAPH front page: “Madeleine ‘abductor’” – This is the man Jane Tanner says she saw at 9:15pm on May 3
THE INDEPENDENT and THE GUARDIAN: No Madeleine news today

Hi Carmen,
The essays went fine.
My philosophy lecturer normally rips me to shreds (thank God it’s only part of the course and not my degree) but he was almost complimentary.

I heard the Spanish interview was carried out in kennedy’s house (their sponsor) so in fact the bad case of tacky furniture would be down to him, if so? Nouveau’s seldom have taste IMHO and are usually way behind in design and try to recreate a stately home look to antiquefy themselves in their mind at least

Ian 589 says…..
Tell me, are you a mother?
Yep, son and daughter. Both hardworking upstanding adults, younger one still at home; oh and a foster son.
And I have a husband and an interesting career that I love and a cat and a kitten.

If Jane Tanner is so sure that she saw M being carried off by a strange man, is positive it was her, and even recognised the pyjamas, then is’nt it strange that she stood by and watched instead of taking action to prevent the abduction.

Coolandcalm.
You better tell the Prison Service - they think they have Forensic psychologists working with offenders.

‘………if they came through that, would Anorak thaw and warm to them?’
Maybe …………………………………………… maybe not!.

I’m not being aggressive. I don’t think he or she is believable.

What IS even weirder, about this story..is that Tanner appears to be O’Brien’s alibi.!.after all HE was missing from the tapas bar closest to the time when the abduction took place in the so-called timeline…if we can believe it…O’Brien leaves table around 21.30…returns 25 mins later at 21.55..2200 Kate McCann leaves table…..She claims to have seen the greasy haired man with the bundle at around 21.15…so that by the time O’Brian goes to check on the vomiting child, it’s AFTER the sighting! So it could look like the alleged abduction occurred BEFORE O’Brien left the table…..The changing of the story…if that can be believed…by Tanner…connected more with that aspect of the drama, when I first became intrigued with this case. And the determination to point the direction of suspicion at Murat…if Tanner had suspected Murat immediately, why did she go with the greasy haired guy?………..I don’t get that part….Didn’t they have a confrontation with Murat when they returned to give evidence? ….Now that the drawing of the so called abductor is out there….according to her description, we can say that is what she is claiming, not merely what she is reported to be claiming. So why point at Murat earlier on? If that’s what she did!

268 Tony Bennett
“202 The Real Stig “Funny how every positioning of knees, tugging of earlobe and blink is significant, but a man seen carrying a blonde child at the right time isn’t.”
REPLY: Er, The real Stig, with the first, we have the benefit of unlimited ‘action replays’. Agaisnt that we have an Irishman who stepped out of ‘Kerry’s Bar’ at 10.00pm - with no action replays possible”
Being a lawyer Tony, which of the two would be admissible in a court as evidence?
October 26th, 2007 at 4:16 pm
???
That you write so unscientifically for someone with 20 years experience who went to one of America’s top universities and you don’t know forensic and criminal are used as interchangeable terms, and aren’t 2 separate fields.
October 26th, 2007 at 4:16 pm
520, ???,
Who would do this to scare Gerry and why?
October 26th, 2007 at 4:16 pm
Karen 590
Criminal is to do with the person and Forensic is to do with the evidence. Two different profilers doing two different jobs but often working alonside each other.
(Though not always. Criminal Psychologists will work with convicted offenders, the Forensic Psychologist works to prove a case and is not interested in the aftermath)
But really really really, there’s no need to attack a newcomer personally, or anyone actually. Why so aggressive??

The Doctors McCann appear to be having some presentational difficulties.
It may be that the current PR team will have to stand down - so I can hit the ground running if called to step into the breach, I thought I would take some soundings from Anorak, possibly a tough audience for the McCanns.
What would the view here be if the Doctors McCann agreed to a no holds barred interview by a professional brusier etc John Humphrey’s; Paxman, may be that Jermey Kyle, and wired up to a lie detector - if they came through that, would Anorak thaw and warm tothem?

I went to university over 25 years ago in stanford! What is your problem!
October 26th, 2007 at 4:11 pm
Probably had heard of her “hotlips” nickname….wanted to test.
Dr G P McCann didn’t look very happy about it.
October 26th, 2007 at 4:10 pm
Lets look at the changing stories.
Heres one from May 5
Madeleine, who turns four next Friday, was last seen by her father at about 2100 local time.
When Mrs McCann went to check on her about an hour later, she found the bedroom’s outside shutter and window had been opened and her daughter missing.
In the same article
Mr McCann’s sister Philomena, criticised the Portuguese police for initially “playing down” their response to the disappearance.
She has been in phone contact with her brother.
Speaking from her home in Glasgow, she said: “He thinks it’s just too little, too late.
“It was hours before the local police turned up and we’re talking two bobbies that totally downplayed the incident and said that Maddie had maybe just wandered off.”
Now look at how the story has changed.

582 Portia, yes she would attract lots of men (ones who like the no breast hard faced types) and he looks the jealous type (and shoots blanks).

OK folks outta here….
Have a good ‘un….
October 26th, 2007 at 4:08 pm
???
Right, I did a quick check - it’s called Forensic psychology in America too.
But the media will more often refer to it as criminal psychology - probably because the public are more familiar with the term.
Give up - or write like a real professional.

Maybe he whispered “confess you murderer” in her ear?
October 26th, 2007 at 4:07 pm
If they are guilty I don’t think they would sleep good knowing what they did was wrong and the worst thing I can’t understand is that they are both helping eachother, at times I notice she afraid to speak, she afraid to tell the truth.

How about a little black ‘tache on that picture if you get my drift.
A long lost relation maybe?

Yes that rather obnoxious Michael was I thought more like an angry Dr G P McCann..
..but on reflection…I now think he gor his name wrong when signing in…forgot to use the proper one..Philomena.

561 that furniture. ditto.
My first thought.
Also, KM doesn’t have a good voice. That voice hurts her. She should say as little as possible.
GM looks like he has a wayward wife on his hands who has to be constantly kept in line.

Like I said, a peck is like a shaking of the hands in latin countries.
Or….. maybe he just wanted to brag “I kissed a murderer!” when he got home.
