Madeleine McCann: Jane Tanner’s eFit, A Spanish Angel And Wearing Pink Pyjamas
MADDY WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE – 70% DON’T BELIEVE McCANNS”
The McCanns are on the TV in Spain. The show is followed by a phone vote. The people vote, at least some of them do; how many, we are not told. One, two, three..? Gerry is a “cardiologist”
Pages 4 and 5: “Police: Parents are hampering probe.” Angel Galan, head of the Spanish National Police’s kidnap, extortion and murder squad says: “There is no real information to indicate that Madeleine could be in Spain although Mr and Mrs McCann might think so. I think the question is why couldn’t she be in France or in the UK? Why does it have to be Spain, Portugal or Morocco?”
“Drawing that could catch her abductor” – an artist’s impression of a man carrying a child in the vicinity of the McCanns holiday complex on May 3. The man is of average height, of average build, with dark hair and with his facial features not filled in. Do you know him?
The artist was commissioned by the McCanns in light of a person their friend Jane Tanner said she saw on the night Madeleine disappeared
THE SUN front page: “PICTURE SENSATION. He took Maddie – MAN SEEN BY McCANNS’ PAL ON FATEFUL NIGHT”
A drawing of a man. The caption: “Hunted…a drawing of man with child in his arms as seen by Jane Tanner”
Page 13: “MADDIE IN ARMS OF SNATCHER. Pyjamas ‘prove it is her’” – The man is 5ft 6. He is 5ft 10 in the Express. He is “slim”. The girl is wearing pink and white pyjamas. The man is in a maroon shirt, camel coloured trousers and black or brown shoes
Says Clarence Mitchell: “We hope this will go a long was to proving the independent eyewitness account that she was taken by someone and the police’s focus on Kate and Gerry as potential suspects is wrong”. See drawing of a man seen by McCanns’ friend
And: “We believe it does show Madeleine in his arms. The description of the pyjamas is accurate enough to believe that is the case.” The McCanns’ friend sees the girl wearing pyjamas like those worn by Madeleine, whom she knows
“GERRY BACK AT WORK” – Gerry McCann is a “cardiologist” – lest we ever forget
DAILY MIRROR front page: “This is the man who took our Madeleine. PARENTS RELEASE SKETCH”
Page 11: “’He was slim with untidy black hair, plastered back. He was hurrying with a child in pink pyjajmaas’” (No songs please)
“’KIDNAPPER’ SEEN BY KATE’S PAL”
Paul Routledge: “All I want to do is put my arms around her and say: ‘there, there’ while she sobs out her grief on my shoulder”
DAILY MAIL front page: “Friends’ fears for ‘increasingly fragile’ Kate”
Pages 8 and 9: “Is Kate at breaking point?” – If she cracks up will the papers like her better? “Friends fear for Maddie’s mother after TV ordeal”
“SPANISH EYES” – The McCanns have launched a private “proxy investigation” in Spain. Under Portuguese law it is illegal to use private detectives while an investigation is ongoing
The mystery man who may have taken her” – Mrs Tanner sees the man. She is later “racked with guilt”
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE PARENTS ‘HIDING TRUTH’ – 70 per cent of TV viewers thinks McCanns are lying”
Pages 4 and 5: “BODY LANGUAGE SPECIALIST GIVES HIS VERDICT ON KATE – ‘MUM WOULD BE VERY GOOD POKER PLAYER’.” Robert Phipps watches the interview with Kate McCann on Spanish TV. She is frowning, and expert Phipps says this is indicative of “pain” and stress. Who knew? We do not know if he then voted in the subsequent poll
THE TIMES front page: “Madeleine ‘abductor’” – The white man is of “medium build”
Page 9: “’This is the man who took Madeleine away’” – The Times says the new picture bears “no resemblance to Robert Murat”. The picture has been handed to the McCanns’ detectives who are operating across Europe and North Africa
DAILY TELEGRAPH front page: “Madeleine ‘abductor’” – This is the man Jane Tanner says she saw at 9:15pm on May 3

(864) Elmer …
Having listened to the darn’ thing about 20 times yesterday and another 10 today, I have reached the conclusion that you are right.

824 — muddywaters — “But the sketch, the sketch is important. I don’t think her friend would lie for her.” Isn’t the theory that Tanner’s lying to protect O’Brien, her common-law husband, who was away from the table for an hour and is suspected (by many of us) of disposing of Madeleine’s body? (Sincere question; not trying to give yuo a hard time.)

Is there really such a thing as Italian beer?
God bless your friend. I’m very familiar with the state of home schooling in Germany. In my view, German parents who home school are the bravest people on this earth. I would flee, it’s in my blood.

Please can someone put my mind at rest. In the Daily express yesterday is a photo of Kate and Madeleine on her second birthday.
Am I right in seeing kate with three hands. One hand to the right, one hand keeping Maddie at bay and the third hand pulling her towards her?
Please reply, this is bugging me.
Apologies for this post on no. 5, the picture was actually in yesterdays paper.
Is this another bungled attempt to impress us with the loving family look or has “Thing Adams” joined team Mccan now?

In reference to the Duke University rape case, three of the lacrosse team captains offered to not only give substantial, lengthy statements and interviews to the police, but also to submit to polygraphs. If you are confident in your innocence and want to be excluded as a suspect early on, the polygraph is the way to go.

I was under the impression that the McCanns, Oldfields and OB/Tanner were in the same apartment block.
Additionally it was reported (I agree that we can not necessarily give automatic credence to the media) that the Tapas members left through the main reception gate. Therefore, if McCann and Wilkins were talking outside the McC apartment Tanner would have had to have walked past them to get to the front door.

CoolandCalm: “Stevo…. no its the other way round. The patio doors ‘front’ onto the pool.
Jane T said that she went in and out of her apartment via the front door on the carpark side.
If both she and Gerry McC (eg) had left the Tapas bat at the same time they would have gone in opposite directions one left left left, the other right right right. If you look at the MW map you can see where the access roads go.”
Left and right? I don’t see how that is, they both went to their right and then didn’t Jane just walk past the alley and the gate to Gerry’s apartment and then corner to the front of the complex? I believe Jane and Gerry went the same direction to the apartments, if you believe Jane didn’t go around the side and to the front of complex, but cut through some other alley after going on the alley infront of the McCanns patio area, she would still be going in the same direction when she left Tapas.
The only way I can see your opposite routes making sense is if there is another gate in the pool area, one facing the complex. I thought the fenced in pool area’s nearest gate towards the complex (well the part where the McCanns were staying) was facing the public road?
I know you’re rushing and you don’t have to answer, I’m just more curious as you’ve said you’ve been there and I have wondered about this before.

We have a couple of planes where I fly that have “glass” panels and are loaded with electronics. I like them. Actually though, I’m a vintage plane enthusiast and own a 1946 plane with little more than compass and some basic instruments. It has no avionics at all - apart from my handheld GPS.
I agree with you about the drug problem. It is a big sleeping giant over there.

864 You’re right…..Gerry says “Do you want to say anything to whoever’s calling”
October 26th, 2007 at 7:26 pm
A lot of very tenacious journalists are giving this case a very wide birth, despite airing their views in private. Apparently it wouldn’t be a wise move to rock the boat on this one. Same seems applies to some very experienced cops in the UK.
This leads me to repeat - this is all bollox, there will be no body and no justice.

I still don’t get you. You said “Stevo…. no its the other way round. The patio doors ‘front’ onto the pool.”
In 848 I said “I’ve been calling the carpark the “back” and the poolside the “front”.”
Where are we getting at odds with each other? I said the pool was the front by my understanding and you say it’s the other way around and contradict yourself by saying the patio doors face the pool!!!
October 26th, 2007 at 7:24 pm
844 — Thea — “It is not the McCanns who are being protected by the British government - this is where most everyone has gotten the story very wrong.” Wow. This is something I had not thought of. What about what another poster asserted: that there will be at least a few journalists who want to expose the whole story behind the McCann case? I know that here in the US, there are many reporters who dream of being the next Woodward and Bernstein. (Hey, maybe it till be American media who end up telling the real story!) What do you think? Do you have hope that someone in the press will have a motive for finding out the truth?

Uta Hagen Says:
801, 760 — Stevo and Canada — “I really believe the British interrogation will crack them. No interuptions to translate.” I agree. I think Kate McCann is on the edge and won’t hold up under much mroe pressure.
So on the other hand we do agree that if they won’t crack, then they are truely innocent?
October 26th, 2007 at 7:21 pm
Apologies folks if this has already been covered….
I am anything but a McCann fan, but it is clear that Gerry McCann was misquoted yesterday at the end of that interview: he did NOT say to Kate “Don’t say anything until your mic is off”, at all:
Check this out here:

Has there been a diagram of the room etc. published that we can access?

842. I meant avionics - some pilots like to make special requests.
About schools - drugs are also an issue. Within five years, I think England will have a bigger problem with drugs in the 12-17 age group than America has.

However although I know the layout I only ‘know’ the directions they took from reports!! and we all know all about reports!
And yes I know I’m not explaining well but am rushing!

I’d do the same…and more. It’s like when someone asks directions and they are so far from where they want to be and you reply “well, if I was going to xyz, I wouldn’t start here”.
The McCanns have dug the most enormous hole and instead of climbing out, they keep on digging. Not with shovels…these guys are using JCBs!
October 26th, 2007 at 7:18 pm
827. Thanks coolandcalm. But I think in some ways since the villas are owned by MW doesn’t that make it easier to get access to adjacent units? I think even though there are alleyways and pathways and it’s not a restricted gated community it is easier to petition off and gather evidence than in a city crime scene?

The polygraph may not be admissible in European courts, but I doubt there’s a detective in the world who would refuse to give one if a suspect agreed to take it.
If the suspect successfully passed a polygraph administered by the investigating police themselves, he’d likely lose his “arguido” status pretty quickly!
In the JonBenet Ramsey murder case, the lead detectives asked Patsy and John Ramsey whether they’d agree to be polygraphed, since other suspects had already taken and passed such tests, and had been removed from the suspects’ list. Detective Steve Thomas says that Patsy said, in theory, she’d take 10 of them, so confident was she of her innocence. And John Ramsey at first insisted he’d pass one IF he took it, but that he “would be insulted if you asked…. I mean, if you haven’t talked to enough people to tell you what kind of people we are….”
By then, like the McCanns, the Ramseys had “lawyered up,” and so they refused to take all polygraphs until much, much later, and then only took the test administered by their own, paid operators, and only released the one result that said “inconclusive.”

Yes, I’m a bit confused, I know Tanner/O’Brien lived in the same general area as the McCanns while they were at MW. I know that the Paynes had an apartment in a bit of a different area, is that the other way you’re speaking of?
October 26th, 2007 at 7:15 pm
817 — MichaelRob “If I happened to be so stupid enough to land myself in the position they are in now with fingers being pointed and eyebrows raised and I knew 100 per cent i was innocent I wouldn’t give a rats ass what the PJ charged me with.
I would go straight to an independent, professional who could make available a lie detector test.” Well said. You know what I’d do if I were in the McCanns’ sitution and I were innocent? I’d call a press conference and say to the reporters, “YOU be my lie detector test.” Then, I’d answer any question they had. When people are accused of something horrible, and they didn’t do it, they couldn’t care less if people find out about their mere peccadillos. If you spend hours answering tough questions, and you answer without equivocation, you will be believed. In the US, within a few days after the Duke rape story broke, it was very clear the allegations were completely false because the three students accused said, “We never touched this woman. We’ll take any type of test you want. We’ll take the stand. We’ll never plead to a lesser offense. We have nothing to hide.”

Next time I go to Holland I’ll let you know. Probably we can meet up and have a beer or two. There’s always some good bands there so I like to go see live music there. Do you watch any yourself? I grew up on Dutch bands of the 70s - Focus, Supersister, Golden Earring, Kayak.
