Madeleine McCann: Jane Tanner’s eFit, A Spanish Angel And Wearing Pink Pyjamas
MADDY WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE – 70% DON’T BELIEVE McCANNS”
The McCanns are on the TV in Spain. The show is followed by a phone vote. The people vote, at least some of them do; how many, we are not told. One, two, three..? Gerry is a “cardiologist”
Pages 4 and 5: “Police: Parents are hampering probe.” Angel Galan, head of the Spanish National Police’s kidnap, extortion and murder squad says: “There is no real information to indicate that Madeleine could be in Spain although Mr and Mrs McCann might think so. I think the question is why couldn’t she be in France or in the UK? Why does it have to be Spain, Portugal or Morocco?”
“Drawing that could catch her abductor” – an artist’s impression of a man carrying a child in the vicinity of the McCanns holiday complex on May 3. The man is of average height, of average build, with dark hair and with his facial features not filled in. Do you know him?
The artist was commissioned by the McCanns in light of a person their friend Jane Tanner said she saw on the night Madeleine disappeared
THE SUN front page: “PICTURE SENSATION. He took Maddie – MAN SEEN BY McCANNS’ PAL ON FATEFUL NIGHT”
A drawing of a man. The caption: “Hunted…a drawing of man with child in his arms as seen by Jane Tanner”
Page 13: “MADDIE IN ARMS OF SNATCHER. Pyjamas ‘prove it is her’” – The man is 5ft 6. He is 5ft 10 in the Express. He is “slim”. The girl is wearing pink and white pyjamas. The man is in a maroon shirt, camel coloured trousers and black or brown shoes
Says Clarence Mitchell: “We hope this will go a long was to proving the independent eyewitness account that she was taken by someone and the police’s focus on Kate and Gerry as potential suspects is wrong”. See drawing of a man seen by McCanns’ friend
And: “We believe it does show Madeleine in his arms. The description of the pyjamas is accurate enough to believe that is the case.” The McCanns’ friend sees the girl wearing pyjamas like those worn by Madeleine, whom she knows
“GERRY BACK AT WORK” – Gerry McCann is a “cardiologist” – lest we ever forget
DAILY MIRROR front page: “This is the man who took our Madeleine. PARENTS RELEASE SKETCH”
Page 11: “’He was slim with untidy black hair, plastered back. He was hurrying with a child in pink pyjajmaas’” (No songs please)
“’KIDNAPPER’ SEEN BY KATE’S PAL”
Paul Routledge: “All I want to do is put my arms around her and say: ‘there, there’ while she sobs out her grief on my shoulder”
DAILY MAIL front page: “Friends’ fears for ‘increasingly fragile’ Kate”
Pages 8 and 9: “Is Kate at breaking point?” – If she cracks up will the papers like her better? “Friends fear for Maddie’s mother after TV ordeal”
“SPANISH EYES” – The McCanns have launched a private “proxy investigation” in Spain. Under Portuguese law it is illegal to use private detectives while an investigation is ongoing
The mystery man who may have taken her” – Mrs Tanner sees the man. She is later “racked with guilt”
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE PARENTS ‘HIDING TRUTH’ – 70 per cent of TV viewers thinks McCanns are lying”
Pages 4 and 5: “BODY LANGUAGE SPECIALIST GIVES HIS VERDICT ON KATE – ‘MUM WOULD BE VERY GOOD POKER PLAYER’.” Robert Phipps watches the interview with Kate McCann on Spanish TV. She is frowning, and expert Phipps says this is indicative of “pain” and stress. Who knew? We do not know if he then voted in the subsequent poll
THE TIMES front page: “Madeleine ‘abductor’” – The white man is of “medium build”
Page 9: “’This is the man who took Madeleine away’” – The Times says the new picture bears “no resemblance to Robert Murat”. The picture has been handed to the McCanns’ detectives who are operating across Europe and North Africa
DAILY TELEGRAPH front page: “Madeleine ‘abductor’” – This is the man Jane Tanner says she saw at 9:15pm on May 3

Forget the terms front and back for a moment as it’s irrelevant in this discussion.
1. To get to the Tapas Bar you MUST go through Ocean Club which is on the road running alongside the McCann apartment.
2. The McCann apartment is the FIRST apartment on the ground floor as you walk up the hill from Ocean Club.
3. They have said they left the patio doors open. Therefore, it is logical and obvious that they’d go in the apartment through those doors after walking up the steps. Either that or walk further up the hill to get to the door facing the carpark.
4. The alleyway running along the patio side of the apartments can be used to access ground floor apartments and probably 2nd and 3rd floor apartments. We do know for sure you can walk along the alley to get to ground floor apartments.
5. The others would have to walk up the hill to the car park and then walk along that side of the apartments.
To use your directions, I’d say that on looking out of the apartments towards the car park, you would turn right until you hit the street corner at the McCann apartment and make another right and go down the hill to Ocean Club.
Anyway, here’s a better diagram to explain:

874 — I’m sure you’re right. Hope I’m never wrongfully accused of something, because I’ve always thought (perhaps irrationally) that lie detector tests will read anxiety over the circumstances as lying!

Remigius:
“This whole argument assumes that Tanner isn’t lying. And if she isn’t, then why didn’t she scream “Stop! Help! Hand over wee Madeleine, you evil abductor!” and raise the alarm right then?
Or why not say, “Excuse me, sir, but I must ask for security purposes: Where are you going with this little girl?”
Hmm. I think it depends on the people, in determining if someone is likely to do that. With the doors unlocked and sleeping children, one could say she should have been more likely to do so, but she clearly didn’t for whatever reason (not paying attention and thinking about her own child? A bit tipsy?).
I don’t believe she saw everything she is describing. If she really did see all of this, I think she would have been more likely to say something. First I heard she just saw a man carrying something and a glimpse of possibly pink on a blanket, now the image has a good view of Madeleine’s pajamas and feet dangling. Just as the McCanns may have lied about the doors being unlocked or whatever it was they lied about to the police take abduction seriously. I think it is possible Tanner is elaborating a bit to deflect criticism of her husband, herself, and the McCanns. At least she isn’t giving either of the people a face though, and admitting she didn’t see things that clearly (as a proper face and knowing it was Madeleine would be more damning for both herself and whomever matched her description and doesn’t have an alibi).

I don’t think May can possibly be peak holiday season in Portugal. I would think peak sesason ran from mid-June to mid-September. There probably weren’t all that many people there in early May.

I agree. My family was considered upper middle class. Behind closed doors was a different story. I am now in therapy.

I agree with you I have to admit. But then sometimes I shoot before thinking about it. I think they have been advised the correct way to go about this whole fiasco. The trouble is we don’t know what goes on behind the scenes.

866. Uta,
I don’t know about investigative journalism anymore in the US or in the UK. I had thought its demise was a completely American thing but it appears that blurring the lines between fact and fiction and media and government is happening all over (sadly France and Italy).
I have my hearts set on a UK blogger or a Portuguese journalist coming out with the truth but I don’t believe it will happen for several years.
My theory is based on many inconsistencies in this story the very first being why would the government intervene in such a case regardless that it involves UK subjects abroad. As we have seen just from recent news events if the UK government was constantly involved with the crimes and misdemeanors and mishaps of their subjects abroad they’d be very busy indeed - they’d never have time for politics and governing and their favourite past-time: schmoozing at swank soirees.
Secondly, Gerry and Kate’s carerrs and connections - although impressive - do not have the prestige or makings of such high level involvement. There is a missing factor to this story which is imo another person or group of people who were involved in whatever happened on May 3rd. When Madeleine “disappeared” this person or persons were quickly removed from PdL before the police arrived. McCanns were promised assistance as a way to keep them quiet about the high ranking individual or individuals.
I don’t know if the McCanns killed Madeleine my opinion at this time is that they did not directly but that they know what happened and are being forced to keep quiet.
The support and assistance they are receiving is payback for their troubles at being a “beard” if you like for the powerful unknown person(s).

This is today’s headline from Portuguese Newspaper ‘24 Horas’ (their translated version)
“Parents of Maddie disseminate new portrait-robot of suspect”
(Gosh, I think they may just have worked out the identity of the abductor – so the colour of his clothing was shiny silver!!!)
October 26th, 2007 at 7:39 pm
just wanted to share a couple of personal stories about abused children, and things not appearing as they seem.
i am not saying the McCanns abused Maddie or had anything to do with her death, cos I just don’t know.
Anyway, when I was at secondary school, one of my school friends’ dad was (and I think still is) the principal of a very well respected, very high performing, sixth form college in the UK. The family were very middle class, lovely house, two very attractive and clever teenage daughters, and extremely high flying parents…etc, in essence, the ‘perfect family’ the McCanns claim to be. This schoolfriend, lets call her Sally. Well, Sally’s best friend came to me at school upset at what she had seen whilst at Sally’s house. Sally’s father, the very well respected professor had gotten angry and had had thrown (a tiny size 8, 5ft 14 year old) clean across the room. Now, I don’t know if that was a one off or a regular ccurance, but it happened. Maybe he was incredibly stressed and it was a one off. ‘Sally’ is now (thanks to friendsreunited) doing very well for herself like all good middle class girls. But just think how that could’ve gone horribly wrong? No one would’ve believed he would ever hurt his perfect family?
Another girl I knew was systematically abused (psychically) by her step father for about 4 years before a school friend noticed the bruises. But because she came from a ‘nice’ family, always had well fitting clothes, didn’t smell, looked well cared for, had birthday and xmas presents…etc, no one ever suspected anything was going on behind close doors.
Just wanted to share…..

You are measuring a system based on simple “licenses” . That is comparing apples to oranges. In America they have a population 5 times larger than the UK and greater diversity. I do not know where your friends/relatives fit into this hierarchical level based on education.Certificates do not measure ones intelligence. We have to educate many, and try to do just that. Everyone in America is entitled to an education. They may not be rocket scientists but they will have a level of education that will certainly increase their ability to succeed far beyond those in certain societies whose education does not go beyond HS. Because of a certain restrictions in education some will have to spend there adult life in positions that are beneath there potential. To base your opinion on simplistic certifcates leads me to believe you are not well informed.

At least your guy has a nose!
Tanner’s “sketch” is of an alleged evil abductor with no face–no eyes, no ears, no nose, no mouth, no chin, no forehead, no cheeks….
Tanner also presents a headless Madeleine. So neither the alleged abductor nor his alleged prey, Madeleine McCann, are identified in any way. And if Tanner herself couldn’t even recognize Madeleine at the time, how likely is it that the child she saw (if she did) is Madeleine at all?
This whole argument assumes that Tanner isn’t lying. And if she isn’t, then why didn’t she scream “Stop! Help! Hand over wee Madeleine, you evil abductor!” and raise the alarm right then?
Or why not say, “Excuse me, sir, but I must ask for security purposes: Where are you going with this little girl?”
Why not run and get help, then and there?
Since nobody’s reporting any other missing little girl in pink and white pajamas that evening, either Tanner saw nothing and is lying, or she saw something that was so inconsequential that it is extraneous to the case. Had she really seen an evil abductor kidnapping Madeleine, the whole scenario would be different.

865 — Ferdinand — “So on the other hand we do agree that if they won’t crack, then they are truely innocent?” No. it’s not that I believe the McCanns are guilty because I predict they will crack; it’s that I believe the McCanns are guilty AND I predict they will crack. Whether they are guilty and whether they’ll continue to deny that are separate issues. (Actually, I’d bet it’s Kate who cracks, not Gerry. Gerry strikes me as one of those stubborn, arrogant people who would lie in the face of incontrovertible evidence rather than admit in any way, “I was wrong.”)

Yes. It’s widely known. I’ve just drawn one to stop all the confusion…give me a minute or two to upload it.
October 26th, 2007 at 7:36 pm
There are numerous apartments at the Mark Warner resort. It was peak holiday season. There were probably 100 or more guests at that particular time. How come Tanner is the ONLY one who saw this guy carrying a child away? And how do you remember such detail if you actually placed no importance on the happening at the time?
It is just beyond belief!
October 26th, 2007 at 7:35 pm
877. I suppose if we are to believe O’brien helped but I doubt the friends did. Too much to cover up - lying makes one an accomplice and carries stiff penalties.

No I do not agree with the assessment that if they don’t crack they are innocent. I just believe one will crack by observing their demeanor with each other.
On the other hand, if they are innocent, they will survive the interrogation by using memory recall. They will answer consistently to all questions regardless of the order of events. You have not read my post (801) with full understanding of what I said. My belief of them cracking, was a personal opinion. The methods of police interrogation are fact. Many guilty have not cracked during interrogation, but if the interrogation is done by an officer who is pro at it, it will reveal dishonesty in their answers.

Sorry, James. I haven’t seen the picture. I’m sure Kate doesn’t have three hands though, it must be someone else who is hidden or cut out of the photo when it was cropped or something? Are you wondering about the identity of that person?
871
And a bit of an addition to this bit of my own post:
“The only way I can see your opposite routes making sense is if there is another gate in the pool area, one facing the complex. I thought the fenced in pool area’s nearest gate towards the complex (well the part where the McCanns were staying) was facing the public road?”
In pictures, I don’t see another gate in that location. So I suppose I didn’t have to ask you that, sorry.
