by | 31st, October 2007

MADDY WATCH – Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann

DAILY MIRROR front page: “MADDY POLICE TO QUIZ MURAT AGAIN – He ‘has not been ruled out’

Page 7: “NOT WORRIED – Madeleine suspect shrugs off new police grilling.” Says Murat’s lawyer Francisco Pagarete: “He’s happy to co-operate with any further questions police may have”

DAILY MAIL front page: “MADDIE – First suspect will be quizzed again”

Hernanio Carvalho has written a book. Called Maddy 129, it covers the 129 days from May 3, (when Madeleine disappeared) to September 9 when Kate and Gerry McCann were named as official suspects

Says Carvalho: “What we want is to place doubts. Why do the couple’s friends’ statements and their own not tally? Why is it that the times which they say they went to check on their children in the apartment, when they say they were in the restaurant, do not coincide”

Senor Carvalho asks the questions. Look out for his next books – Maddy 150; Maddy 180; Maddy 200 etc. – in which he asks some more questions

DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE – POLICE TO TURN HEAT ON MURAT. ‘His story doesn’t add up’”

Police chief Paul Rebelo thinks there are inconsistencies in Murat’s story

Says Tuck Price, Murat’s friend: “Robert hasn’t heard anything from the police. He wants this cleared up. He’s in limbo”

“I saw stranger lurking near Madeleine flat” – An unnamed nanny tells police she saw a man “lurking” close to the McCanns’ holiday flat. Her initials are MH. In the summer of 2006, she was babysitting a six-year-old boy in the same apartment used by the McCanns in 2007. She “discovered the suspicious man lurking in bushes”. It was a Thursday. Madeleine disappeared on a Thursday. The Express says there are “marked similarities to the Madeleine case”

DAILY STAR front page: “I SAW MAN WHO TOOK MADDIE – Nanny tells of fiends in bushes”

Page 7: “NANNY: I CAUGHT A PROWLER OUTSIDE MADDIE HOL HOME”

The nanny has not been questioned by police. The McCanns’ private detectives call it a “solid lead”

“Cop blunders exposed” – Those “Bungling” Portuguese police again. Says source: “The crime scene was not duly isolated. It’s mess – chaotic”

THE SUN front page: “Murat ‘grilled again’

Page 15: “I SAW LURKER. Nanny tells of man in bushes outside Maddie flat”

DAILY TELEGRAPH page 11: “Madeleine police go back to first suspect”

Robert Murat is to be interviewed for a third time. Paulo Rebelo wants to go over all evidence gathered so far. Robert Murat lives with his mum
