Banning Horse-Drawn Carriages In New York
IN New York: NEW YORK (AP) - The horse-drawn carriages that clip clop around Central Park could be banned under City Council legislation to be introduced at the urging of animal advocates who say the horses are treated inhumanely.”
Who takes a horse-drawn carriage in New York, aside from parents who want to bring deep shame on their children - that is the inhumanity.
Councilman Tony Avella, who plans to introduce the bill next Wednesday, said the horses that have entertained tourists and New Yorkers for decades are exposed to cruel conditions and are at risk of injury or death as they weave through city traffic.
In September, a horse died after it was spooked by street musicians with drums and bolted down Central Park South. It was the second such incident in less than two years.
“This situation is only getting worse - the animals are not being treated properly, and enough is enough,” Avella said. “Horses are incompatible with traffic - especially midtown traffic.”
Ever been in a horse-drawn carriage?

They used to have dray horses in London, but the last lot were retired early as traffic is just so heavy.

It’s impossible to keep the horses out of of traffic because the horses live in warehouses up to 2 miles away from Central Park. They travel through heavy traffic every day back and forth to the park. Central Park is a preserved landmark, so the stables could not be relocated there. Also, there have been many accidents in central park and on the hack stand, which is just outside of the park. During 2006-2007, 4 of the 7 accidents during this period happened in central park or on the hack line. A 71-year-old bicyclist was hit by a bolting horse and broke his hip. Two of the horses in the accidents died. A third died after she collapsed. She was estimated to be in her 20’s. These horses live cramped stalls, some so small they can’t turn around or lie down. They go from the shafts of their carriages (9 hours allowed by law) to the stalls without turnout or any socialization with other horses. It’s a miserable life and it’s time for the industry to be put out to pasture!

Agree, the horses should be taken off the roads and if they think hard enough, the authorities should see that trotting through central park will be excellent for the horses and nice for their hoofs as well. Poor horses, always thought they were pushed too hard for hours on end. In central park their droppings can go on the gardens. Think about it New York!
