Madeleine McCann: The Age Of Jose Anes, Gerry McCann’s Fury And Murat’s Nannies Know Best
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
THE SUN: “No one will ever stand trial”
Because no one has been charged with any crime?
Or: “NOBODY will EVER stand trial over missing Madeleine McCann because cops made so many vital blunders,” says the Sun. And so too says Jose Anes, 62: “Mistakes in the early hours demolished the entire case”
The ex-director of Lisbon’s police lab is “Portugal’s top forensic expert”, a billing the lab’s current director may dispute
Mr Anes says: “If the scene is not preserved in the first hours, all the hours of effort that follow are useless. I am utterly convinced — unless some new, concrete evidence suddenly emerges — the case will never reach trial”
But what of the evidence gathered so far, like the DNA samples found in the McCanns’ hire car?
“Maddie sniffer dog ‘was rigged’” - Gerry McCann is “FURIOUS” – as often he is. He “believes sniffer dogs used to find Maddie clues in the family’s hire car were MANIPULATED by cops”
Says a “source close to the couple”: “Gerry says a dog went up to the Scenic, sniffed around and went to head off. He watched the dog being brought back to the vehicle. Finally, it reacts around the boot area. Gerry was open-mouthed at that, he feels the dog was manoeuvred into a position where it could react”
And smell
“Murat pals ’saw him near flat’” – “SUSPECT Robert Murat was PALS with British holiday nannies who say they saw him the night Maddie vanished, it has emerged”
Good friends? “And at least two of the girls knew him well enough to be on first name terms”
That’s close, eh
“A source confirmed yesterday that he did befriend several girls, adding: ‘A lot are attractive and he made a beeline for them. When they were asked who was near the apartment that night, several mentioned Murat”
DAILY MAIL: “Madeleine: Forensics expert says inquiry is ‘complete waste’ because of police blunders at apartment”
Says Jose Manuel Anes: “Huge amounts of money were spent but if, in the first hours, the due precautions for the preservation of the crime scene were not taken, all this hard work goes down the drain. We can spend rivers of money which will all go down the drain if the crime scene is not properly isolated”
The McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell says: “It is alarming to hear that Mr Anes has this view. All we want, and have done throughout, is to ensure the operational police side of this has been done in an effective and efficient manner as possible”
And why is Mr Anes – “the 62-year-old” - speaking out now? Because he’s making his comments known in a book called The McCanns’ Guilt – not that the case will ever, come to trial, you understand
“Madeleine: Gerry’s fury at ‘bungling’ dog handlers” – More Gerry McCann fury
DAILY STAR: “MADDIE COPS HIDE WITNESS”
Says the paper: “The key witness in the Madeleine McCann inquiry was in hiding last night after fleeing Portugal” – Jane Tanner? Kate McCann? Gerry McCann? No, the unnamed Portuguese tapas waiter…
“Pals say he is terrified his identity is about to be revealed and claim he is also scared of British and Portuguese government influence in the probe…Friends add that he is worried about the private eyes hired by Gerry and Kate McCann, both 39, to help find their daughter”
One former work colleague of the waiter says: “He does not want to be involved in any of this. Through no fault of his own he finds himself at the heart of this worldwide mystery”
DAILY EXPRESS: “MADELEINE: WITNESS GOES ON THE RUN ‘TO PROTECT HIS EVIDENCE’”
“THE key witness in the missing Madeleine McCann case was in hiding last night after fleeing Portugal”
“POLICE WERE ‘SIDETRACKED’ BY MCCANNS” - Former police crime scene chief Jose Manuel Anes is “ONE of Portugal’s top forensic experts”
The WORLD’S GREATEST NEWSPAPER investigates. Mr Anes is “71”
And “last night hinted that Kate and Gerry McCann were partly to blame for the flawed investigation into their daughter’s disappearance”. Although the Sun says it was those bungling Portuguese police (see above)?
“They should not have been thinking of the poor little parents but I understand the human dimension and the pressure which immediately involved the investigators. Sometimes the police are too human. The police must be absolutely objective. Somebody’s suggestions and complaints connected to a person’s disappearance should be set aside while the evidence is being gathered. In the moments immediately following the occurrence the goal is to gather everything and preserve everything”
Not bungling, rather too caring; too human
DAILY MIRROR: “McCann DNA clue ‘useless’”
Jose Manuel Anes is 62. He is the retired head of Portugal’s police science laboratory.
He tells the Mirror, and everyone else: “I fear the case will never reach trial” - and even if it did, no jury would be able to convict anyone.
BBC: Audience for BBC News 24 peaked in 2007 at 8.2 million in the week ending 1 July for the bomb attack on Glasgow Airport and at 7.9 million for the story of the kidnapping of Madeleine McCann in the week ending 13 May

Good points. Re:
“Even using a MAdeleine look-alike from one of the Tapas group it would be presumed that then someone else’s kid will not have been accounted for in the nursery records”
don’t forget that the O’Brien/Tanner child was supposedly ‘ill’ on 3rd. Was she ill during the day too? That would account for one less child in a big bunch of look-alike blonde children as described by O’Donnell.
December 18th, 2007 at 4:08 pm
Some posters still seem to doubt that Madeleine was alive on that “last” day. The twins were two years old at this time, and there seems to be no doubt that they, at least, were at the kids’ club that day.
Although they would not have been speaking in whole sentences, or even at a level understandable by those not in their immediate family, the twins would surely alert the staff to Madeleine’s absence, by calling her or looking for her, or something along these lines. It would be a hell of a gamble by the McCanns to send the two of them, even with a different little blonde girl. The staff may not have realised, but the twins certainly would.
Anyone care to comment?
Before I get flamed, I am not a pro-McCanner - I firmly believe they are guilty of something far more serious than simple child negligence. They appear to be a horrid, vile, unfeeling couple, and I personally do not believe anything which comes from either of them or their well-rehearsed choreographed partners-in-crime!

Are they going to get away with it?
Not been able to catch up on McScam news for a couple of days?
What’s the mood?

leslie - abduction hoax -
Just go around your office, family or any group of normalish people you are in contact with, and, as an experiment, put it to them that MM has not been abducted all at and it is all just a giant hoax, and then gauge the reaction.
The madness has not spread far beyond this cupboard.

Jez 354 IMO what’s going on is a lot of misinformation fed to the media by different channels and little (indeed total absence of) any will by british journalists to do their job correctly (by cross checking information).
What is increasingly clear to me (from various statements and pieces of info), is that Madeleine’s disappearance and suggested abduction was planned well before the McCanns travelled to PDL.
They have been able to launch (within hours) a well orchestrated set of actions that ranged from setting up companies to registering trade marks and calling in the media to strengthen a theory of abduction a de-rail the investigation.
If at the beginning the abduction theory sounded like the only possible explanation to what happened to Madeleine, after a few weeks many started questionning what was the role of the parents in this abuction. After a few weeks some started asking if abduction was really the only possible explanation. As early as June most international journalists present in PDL (and excluding portuguese and british press corps) had serious doubts that an abduction ever took place and were suspicious of the role of the parents. We have somehow been immune to some of the reporting in other countries (i noted with interest Sherlock’s point about international press).
It is unclear when british liaison offices started questionning the McCanns testimony of events. But the suggestion to use sniffer dogs clearly came from the Leicestershire liaison officers. This suggestion was certainly triggered by facts known to the police but unknown to us. The possible incoherence in the statements of the Tapas 9 will not have been at the heart of this suggestion - many police officers said that there’s never been a case when everyone gives the same account of what happened. The possible intervention of Murat as a translator to fake some of the witness statements is even less likely as british liaison officers (one presumes they speak english even if not from glasgow) are known to have followed several if not all interviews.
What is also increasingly clear to me is that Metodo 3 are the last step in the scam designed to find Madeleine and reap a fair share of the proceedings from the fund.
Thanks to Anorak and the work that Stevo and others have developed on the manipulated photography, it is now increasingly clear that the McCanns intention in possibly manipulating the photos was not to suggest Madeleine was alive hours before she was reported missing (the 6.30 visit to the room by the Tapas friend would have been sufficient). The only reason to mainpulate the pictures was to include Madeleine in a picture where she was seen in PDL.
My best guess is that Madeleine left PDL dead or alive very shortly after she initially arrived there.
Questions Outstanding:
- - I’m still not sure how / if there are any records from the children’s nursery in the resort that would confirm Madeleine’s presence on the 3rd of May. If that is the case how could these be explained? Even using a MAdeleine look-alike from one of the Tapas group it would be presumed that then someone else’s kid will not have been accounted for in the nursery records.
- -Why - accidental death (early in the holiday) or scam… the alleged DNA traces suggest the prior. However, the ease and speed of setting up the fund registering trademark etc. suggest the latter.It’s difficult to say at the moment.
But my best guess is that Madeleine was no longer in PDL on 3rd of May and Metodo 3 are awaiting the signal to go out and reveal MAdeleine (or her remains). The PJ are playing the waiting game.

Hope Branson agrees it was money well spent.

Obviously, people who believe this abduction hoax have a deep inner need to believe. They are definitely not using any critical thinking skills! Maybe Anorak should put together an on-line course.

I think we all know why they will not take a lie detector.
I think we all know why they left Portugal so quickly.
I think deep down we all know that Madeleine was never abducted by a stranger.
Even the pro-mccannics know, thats why they get so…furious.

But everyone is entitled to show their true character, in public or in private, so carry on.

Oh yes…that too !!

Ann, let me get this straight - you actually wrote to the Doctors about some psychic nonsense and then expected a reply.
I hope that this is a wind-up and that in the real world you have done nothing of the sort.
It is one thing for unhinged to swap insults and theories in a cupboard such as this - but to intrude into private grief in that manner is well outside the bracket of ordinary decent behaviour and into the realm of the derranged.
December 18th, 2007 at 3:34 pm
Salomon ES - when you look at the picture another question arises:
Is it confirmed that Jane Tanner suggested in her interview that the suspect was walking towards Casa Liliana?
How could someone possibly know that. As far as I can see there is a main road (where the suspected abductor was allegedly seen), and then there’s a junction. To the right you have Casa Liliana and to the left you have other streets and buildings. Why would Tanner know / think that the suspect was going to the right and not the left at the junction?

Have no idea what might be stated by each of the psychics.
Maybe they all give a different “picture” of event(s).
Btw…when you mentioned about the “light shining in Madeleine’s eye’s”
what reason did you give for that ?

Hideki and Lilith
“There does seem to be some confusing interpretations in press reports due to translation …So couldn’t the “balcony’ actually refer to the small platform at the top of the exterior rear stairs of the McCann,s apt?”
There is no visibility of the apartment entrance (ie. patio or platform– at top of stairs). The waiter made his observation from the restaurant. Thus, the fact that he could see her meant she was not on the ground floor but on a balcony.
Moreover, there is no confusion over such terms in Portuguese or English. Simply put, there was no balcony on the ground floor. Lilith correctly realized the significance of this.
December 18th, 2007 at 3:30 pm
Forgive my ignorance but there’s yet another thing that I don’t understand about the abduction theory.
If an abductor was to snatch Madeleine (and please note that a small 3 year old awake or asleep is not that easy to carry anyway) from an apartment next to a car park, would it not make a lot more sense to have the car outside and get her in the car and drive off?
Instead, it is claimed that this “possible abductor” was seen by Jane Tanner walking up the road. Which suggests that he actually walked away carrying the girl.
Please have a look at the photo below
http://bp3.blogger.com/_mXbRBcSh0gs/Rt0zOUsXNRI/AAAAAAAAAw8/l-VaRLfdmMc/s1600-h/001-OCEAN-CLUB-VIEW-02.jpg
Allegedly the suspected abductor was seen walking towards Casa Liliana (Murat family house). Just take a look at how long a walk this actually is and what is the risk of actually being seen by someone on the houses facing the road (let alone someone walking).
It’s just not credible - I’m really sorry. I would have found it more credible if Jane Tanner had not come up with the sighting of an abductor, and the possible suggestion would be someone making a move in the car. But walking??? Sorry not possible.

No psychic worth their salt would ever say anything like that !! That is just so bad…obviously a crank and the better ones do NOT hold meetings and “show-boat” in people’s houses like that. This is why no-one takes anything of that nature seriously and why the Police never say they use Psychics and Mediums. I have been to some meetings like that and have walked out they were so crap. 186 Maria says (December 18th, 2007 at 11:22 am):
REPLIES INTERLEAVED
Maria: Oh I haven’t rejected all theories, Tony, I’m not daft, as you correctly say. I know very well that a few minutes is a very small window of opportunity.
REPLY: It is helpful that you acknowledge that. But that ’small window of opportunity’ is multiplied many times over in its ’smallness’ (to pursue the metaphor) by all the other improbablities with the abduction scenario
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Maria: I KNOW that intelligent people make mistakes, Tony, and I have considered seriously whether the McCanns might have been stupid enough to think they could fake a break-in from the INSIDE. It just doesn’t seem to me like a detail these people would overlook. I could be wrong. But it would be a very basic error to make, wouldn’t it?
REPLY: On the contrary, I think in a panic, and having worked out a smokescreen hoax that an abductor ’stole’ Madeleine at around 9.15pm, it is an obvious thing for the McCanns to have suggested from the outset
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Maria: Most people seem to think I’m too ignorant or stupid to understand the details of the case. Thank you, at least, for not entirely sharing that view! I don’t know why you don’t believe me when I say I want to know the truth.
REPLY: Maria, at times, it seems like you are an advocate for every McCann point of view on the case. I am sorry if I have misunderstood you, but I see few if any concessions from you that the McCann-sceptics might be right and that the McCanns might be lying. I also see you denying some of the known facts in the case
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Maria: You have to get rid of the rubbish before you get to the truth. That’s all I’m doing.
REPLY: Noted
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Maria: A faked break-in would be central to their case, wouldn’t it?
REPLY: It would make a small contribution to it. By no means ‘central’
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Maria: Isn’t it the oldest game around to fake a break-in?
REPLY: It’s been done many times before. There was a bloke in the papers a few weeks ago who admitted to shooting himself with a shotgun in order to pick up some insurance money. And women have faked rape ever since Potiphar’s wife (Genesis Chap 39). There’s a lot of liars about
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Maria: I’ve thought of every possibility. Possibly Tanner DID see what she saw but wasn’t meant to?
REPLY: Maria, can you explain Jane Tanner’s change of story? - yet another change of story by the ‘Tapas 9′. White man becomes ‘Mediterranean’. Short hair becomes long. Egg-head becomes normally-shaped head. And most of all, blanket man becomes man carrying child in ‘fire-rescue’ position wearing pink pyjamas - oddly enough NOT the ones the McCanns said Madeleine was wearing that night. Seriously, Maria, I’m listening to what you say - but *please*, how do you account for these remarkable changes of detail? Memories fade, they don’t ‘freshen up’.
And while I’m asking questions, I hope you won’t mind answering another one. What precisely was the purpose of issuing a drawing of the abductor, done by a ‘top FBI forensic-artistic expert’, nearly *six months* after Madeleine ‘disappeaered’? If you don’t know, then I’ll be pleased to tell you
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Maria: But then, who would be carrying away the child on GM’s orders? Wasn’t O’Brien in the Tapas bar at that time?
REPLY: No. He has made the interesting claim that his child was vomiting, he had to attend to her, and had to ask for a change of sheet. Witnesses seem to agree that ‘the tall man’ [O'Brien] was away from the table all or most of the evening until 9.55pm. He could well have been driving Madeleine’s body to a safe location. And her poor little body might have been wrapped up in a couple of Mark Warners sheets - hence his having to explain why he needed a replacement
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Maria: Did GM just ask some helpful passer-by, or hard-up MW staff member, to dispose of his child’s body for him? (As you do!)
REPLY: No, he asked one or more of the ‘Tapas 9′ ‘Pact of Silence’ group to help him develop the abduction hoax. Allegedly. What precise roles they actually played will probably only come out if they start telling the truth
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Maria: I know you think JW was also involved but, sorry, to me that IS a nuttier-than-a-fruitcake theory!!
REPLY: I think JW’s involvement *in some way* is a possibility (especially in relation to the cover-up) given what I consider to be a number of seeming half-truths and omissions in his partner Bridget O’Donnell’s account of the events of 3rd May. I am not convinced by the idea that he needed to wheel his baby around in a pushcahir for a whole hour, 8.30pm to 9.30pm, to get her to sleep.
As I have a little bit of experience in bringing up babies, I would have thought that walking her around the room making quiet sooothing noises, humming or gently singing while perhaps patting her gently on the back at the same time, would be sufficient in most cases to settle the baby in no more than 5 to 10 minutes. I think it was quite a young baby
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Maria: Can I assure you AGAIN that I have no reason not to want to know the truth. What I do NOT like is seeing speculation and obscene innuendo for which there is no evidence. I do believe lies may have been told about the McCanns to make them look as bad as possible in an effort to prejudice the case. If that’s true, and they are guilty, nobody will be more pleased than the couple themselves.
REPLY: Noted. I have answered now, I think, all the core questions in your posting
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Finally, you say: “…for which there is no evidence”.
ANSWER: The changed stories of the McCanns re the shutters and Jane Tanner’s ‘bundleman’ are evidence in this case. And I should add, good evidence, from which we may reasonable draw inferences
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Maria: BUT, if they are guilty, it would have the HUGE plus of meaning that there is no wicked/crazed person still out there who committed this crime. There would be a very positive side indeed.
REPLY: I note what you say
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Maria: I know nothing beyond newspaper stories about the Michael Barrymore case and can’t judge the correctness or otherwise of anything you’ve ever said about it.
REPLY: The Coroner’s comment that the 8 witnesses were guilty of a ‘wall of silence’ is on the public record and was quoted in hundreds of newspaper and media outlets worldwide. You don’t need to read a single word of what I’ve said about the case
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
