Madeleine McCann: The Age Of Jose Anes, Gerry McCann’s Fury And Murat’s Nannies Know Best
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
THE SUN: “No one will ever stand trial”
Because no one has been charged with any crime?
Or: “NOBODY will EVER stand trial over missing Madeleine McCann because cops made so many vital blunders,” says the Sun. And so too says Jose Anes, 62: “Mistakes in the early hours demolished the entire case”
The ex-director of Lisbon’s police lab is “Portugal’s top forensic expert”, a billing the lab’s current director may dispute
Mr Anes says: “If the scene is not preserved in the first hours, all the hours of effort that follow are useless. I am utterly convinced — unless some new, concrete evidence suddenly emerges — the case will never reach trial”
But what of the evidence gathered so far, like the DNA samples found in the McCanns’ hire car?
“Maddie sniffer dog ‘was rigged’” - Gerry McCann is “FURIOUS” – as often he is. He “believes sniffer dogs used to find Maddie clues in the family’s hire car were MANIPULATED by cops”
Says a “source close to the couple”: “Gerry says a dog went up to the Scenic, sniffed around and went to head off. He watched the dog being brought back to the vehicle. Finally, it reacts around the boot area. Gerry was open-mouthed at that, he feels the dog was manoeuvred into a position where it could react”
And smell
“Murat pals ’saw him near flat’” – “SUSPECT Robert Murat was PALS with British holiday nannies who say they saw him the night Maddie vanished, it has emerged”
Good friends? “And at least two of the girls knew him well enough to be on first name terms”
That’s close, eh
“A source confirmed yesterday that he did befriend several girls, adding: ‘A lot are attractive and he made a beeline for them. When they were asked who was near the apartment that night, several mentioned Murat”
DAILY MAIL: “Madeleine: Forensics expert says inquiry is ‘complete waste’ because of police blunders at apartment”
Says Jose Manuel Anes: “Huge amounts of money were spent but if, in the first hours, the due precautions for the preservation of the crime scene were not taken, all this hard work goes down the drain. We can spend rivers of money which will all go down the drain if the crime scene is not properly isolated”
The McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell says: “It is alarming to hear that Mr Anes has this view. All we want, and have done throughout, is to ensure the operational police side of this has been done in an effective and efficient manner as possible”
And why is Mr Anes – “the 62-year-old” - speaking out now? Because he’s making his comments known in a book called The McCanns’ Guilt – not that the case will ever, come to trial, you understand
“Madeleine: Gerry’s fury at ‘bungling’ dog handlers” – More Gerry McCann fury
DAILY STAR: “MADDIE COPS HIDE WITNESS”
Says the paper: “The key witness in the Madeleine McCann inquiry was in hiding last night after fleeing Portugal” – Jane Tanner? Kate McCann? Gerry McCann? No, the unnamed Portuguese tapas waiter…
“Pals say he is terrified his identity is about to be revealed and claim he is also scared of British and Portuguese government influence in the probe…Friends add that he is worried about the private eyes hired by Gerry and Kate McCann, both 39, to help find their daughter”
One former work colleague of the waiter says: “He does not want to be involved in any of this. Through no fault of his own he finds himself at the heart of this worldwide mystery”
DAILY EXPRESS: “MADELEINE: WITNESS GOES ON THE RUN ‘TO PROTECT HIS EVIDENCE’”
“THE key witness in the missing Madeleine McCann case was in hiding last night after fleeing Portugal”
“POLICE WERE ‘SIDETRACKED’ BY MCCANNS” - Former police crime scene chief Jose Manuel Anes is “ONE of Portugal’s top forensic experts”
The WORLD’S GREATEST NEWSPAPER investigates. Mr Anes is “71”
And “last night hinted that Kate and Gerry McCann were partly to blame for the flawed investigation into their daughter’s disappearance”. Although the Sun says it was those bungling Portuguese police (see above)?
“They should not have been thinking of the poor little parents but I understand the human dimension and the pressure which immediately involved the investigators. Sometimes the police are too human. The police must be absolutely objective. Somebody’s suggestions and complaints connected to a person’s disappearance should be set aside while the evidence is being gathered. In the moments immediately following the occurrence the goal is to gather everything and preserve everything”
Not bungling, rather too caring; too human
DAILY MIRROR: “McCann DNA clue ‘useless’”
Jose Manuel Anes is 62. He is the retired head of Portugal’s police science laboratory.
He tells the Mirror, and everyone else: “I fear the case will never reach trial” - and even if it did, no jury would be able to convict anyone.
BBC: Audience for BBC News 24 peaked in 2007 at 8.2 million in the week ending 1 July for the bomb attack on Glasgow Airport and at 7.9 million for the story of the kidnapping of Madeleine McCann in the week ending 13 May

A couple of thoughts in passing…
This 5-minute abduction window has bothered me and a few others, such as Ian, for some time. Why have team McCann made this window so small?
My best guess is that the “abduction” was supposed to have been discovered at 9.30, 15 minutes after Gerry had opened the shutters from the outside and put Madeleine into a neighbouring apartment. Unfortunately for him, Jes Wilkins appeared. Gerry kept with him so that he was not caught in the act with the shutters but eventually gave up on the attempt at 09.25 and went back to the Tapas bar.
It was then left for O’Brien to do what Gerry had intended to do. O’Brien, not knowing how to jemmy shutters, opened them from the inside and waited for Kate to arrive at 10.00.
If Kate shouted, “They’ve taken her” from a balcony, then it was probably not meant to be heard by a Portuguese waiter who understood English. It was meant to inform those of the Tapas 9 who were at the bar that the abduction scenario was about to be put into place.
Smith says in his article that Tanner informed the police straightaway about the eggman and this seems likely. Unfortunately for her, she did not adjust the time of the sighting to take into account that Jes Wilkins would witness that Gerry left his apartment at 0910.
As I say, this is pure guesswork but I can’t come up with another explanation that fits the facts nd I haven’t read any other explanation from anyone else.
Also, has anyone considered that Madeleine may have been in a coma on Wednesday/Thursday and so, although they had time to think of a “What if…” scenario on these days, they would also be thinking that the worst wouldn’t happen. This could be why the resulting explanation that they gave was less well thought out than if she had actually died earlier.

“My best guess is that Madeleine left PDL dead or alive very shortly after she initially arrived there.”
Agreed.
As your theory about a possible hoax abduction for some kind of financial reason makes a lot of sense, it also neatly explains all the evidence. The PJ were clearly in some kind of confusion about what Madeleine actually looked like because of Ms O’Donnell’s article. It’s not surprising - none of us know what Madeleine looked like in the week in PDL because there’s a dearth of photos and none with her siblings.
Wouldn’t a last photo of all the kids be one to treasure?

Incorrect. Its about you maybe, but to me and many others who post here, its about a precedent being prevented - we cannot sit back and allow this appalling leverage of money and position to win. We have no other outlet than to share frustrations here - and possibly to do our little bit to make sure that the alternatives to the controlled media view get some ‘airing’.
At the very least we can let the people who post here blindly supporting their heros know that not everyone is blinded by money and politics and celebrity.
December 18th, 2007 at 4:58 pm
Brandon Flours excellent point:
I have asked the PJ to check for the existence of CCTV cameras within the complex and, if they be there, to enquire as to whether by chance any footage from the night in question has been retained for viewing.
I have also asked that they invite those in residence during the first week of may 2007 May, both staff and guests, to turn over any photos for analysis.
Breaking new ground or what what what.
I am assured that these suggestions will be the subject of careful consideration, at judicial level, and a response is to be expected within the next 6 months.
I therefore confidentially expect plodo to make a break through in or about May 2008

Matt, Stevo.
What if the pictures referred to are the last photo and the playground photo restored to their original state?
What if this is the reason that the McCanns lawyers raised the issue recently of modified photos?

“What can be ‘madder’ that a child going missing and her parents doing all in their power to screw up any police investigation?”
By confusing the police with the suggestion that the child has been abducted, as we have learned today.
“You are absolutely right - it is madness and it is creepy.
But I know you will agree with me that for poor Madeleine none of this has been enjoyable.”
This forum is not about Madeleine, it’s about us.

Its about the McAlledgedChildKillers called by their first name like they are some kind of first name basis with the public while Murat’s last name is used, it’s….foreign…skeery…the kind of name an oily sardine munching paedo would have.
It’s about the way the press portrays the 3 arguidos.

Unfortunately, yes, I think they are.
When the child or her body had not been found, even as early as June, I knew that, if a body were to be found after so long, it would be unlikely to show conclusive cause of death.
I believe strongly that the initial failure to alert the police and encourage others to search, and the subsequent media campaign and touring and failure to appoint investigators until four months down the line were all delaying tactics to ensure that, if anything were found, it would be too late to fully incriminate those responsible.
If there is a body down that well, the remains will not tell enough to identify the killer, abductor or otherwise, and even if the towel came from an NHS hospital and the phone records say someone relevant was at the location, it’s probably not enough.
But truth will out. And there are possibilities. Someone might talk, either idly or sensationally, a divorce (as someone else suggested), a breakdown and confession, a suicide…?

Just a reminder:
The skill of the magician is to make people look in the wrong place at the right time.
Team McConn LOVES us to focus on that narrow time-scale. Wonder why????

409 Mary, dear insidious Mary.
We have no evidence that Madeleine was alive on 3rd of May. I have no sympathy, the last leaked away like blood under a tile when I read about the ‘Stars’ Madeleine was awarded for not bothering her parents when she woke at night.
Surely even you can see that was horrible cruelty - she must have sat alone in the dark weeping - wanting the comfort and protection of her cold and callous parents, but knowing that it would cost her the smiles and the ’stars’.
How can you protect these people? Did you not read the article ‘defending’ the McCanns and published in the Times online on Sunday?

Which ?
I really haven’t a clue. But..certainly something got them very rattled
re pictorial evidence already in the PJ possession early September.
Hope it continues to derail the fibbers.

I always remember that story about Amaral laughing and joking in a restaurant when the McCanns came on a TV in there. People said he was laughing with his colleague like it was an in-joke. I’m sure it was an in-joke. Behind the scenes I imagine the PJ have made many jokes about the McAlibis and McTales.
Ian
I love that description you wrote about the Tapas 9 getting up to watch their kids was like watching leaf-cutter ants. That’s hilarious and true!

I wonder what they could be ?CCTV stills?
If the CCTV of the restaurant is inline with the waiters testimony and they totally go against the Mc Canns version………..
or would they be other peoples photos?
December 18th, 2007 at 4:50 pm
hi bounty…
my lips are sealed. What excitement!!! Might be slightly difficult at first, but after one or two days I guarantee Mrs. B and your son will be completely hooked and devoted.
Better anchor your Christmas tree down firmly……….and be prepared for loads of cuddles!

But WAS it Madeleine? At least ten little blonde girls, remember?

403 Not as creepy as the star chart though is it!
These parents were abusing their child - you dont reward a child for not bothering you if they wake up in the night!
CREEPY!

Agreed. And also factor in the noise of a car. The apartments and walls around there would mean that you’d hear any car starting up down that road towards Murat’s place. Anyone decent abductor would be in a rush and not casually walking down the street carrying a child like a fireman. Madeleine would weigh in the region of 30lbs+ and carrying that kind of weight with outstretched arms would be pretty awkward to say the least.
December 18th, 2007 at 4:48 pm
386 The QC says (December 18th, 2007 at 4:26 pm):
“One of the star witnesses Miss Pennington claims to have given Madeleine her tea on the night in question at about 5.30 pm. or 6.00 pm”.
REPLY: The prosecution team will have fun unpicking her inconsistent statements, though. I only hope she wasn’t paid by anyone for her ‘evidence’
December 18th, 2007 at 4:47 pm
I dont know why people spend their time going over whether anyone should have sympathy with the family!!!
I cant believe the public actually believe far fetched stories about how this family found the time to murder their child, hide her body and have a two hour dinner between 7pm and 10pm!! Come on!!
This “missing” waiter - if it is Baptista - claimed in his very first story to the press (Daily Star) that he only emerged from the restaurant when only “the older woman” (supposedly one of the friend’s mothers) was left at the table. (i.e. everyone had run off to try find Madeleine).
So if it is him in “hiding” because of his SUPPOSED “amazing witness account” of seeing Kate shouting from the balcony “they have taken her” as she rushed out of the room - then he is CLEARLY contradicting himself.
Here is a guy who waitered the family four nights running - changed his story - has now fled the country because of all the “pressure”.
Plus there are a number of paedo networks - particularly one in Belgium, which should have been looked into and yet so much time has been wasted on pondering over the movements /behaviour of this family!
A lot of these networks keep children in basements for months as they sexually abuse them before finally murdering them !!! So could some of you out there stop wasting all our time mulling over the families movements and instead call for a NEW professional investigation into a number of potential suspects who slipped through the net because of all this pointless babble!

What can be ‘madder’ that a child going missing and her parents doing all in their power to screw up any police investigation? And what can be more creepy than parents who do not bother to physically look for their child on the very night she is missing? Or more creepy than parents who dress their younger daughter in their missing child’s clothes only weeks after she has disappeared?
You are absolutely right - it is madness and it is creepy.
But I know you will agree with me that for poor Madeleine none of this has been enjoyable.

Where have you been ? Lucky you with a kitten on your knee. Big, big secret I believe Mrs B’s sister is playing Santa and bringing little ball of fluff, from Cape Town whence Prince came, don’t know colour yet ! But it is a little boy, in the Bountyhouse all will be bliss and joy.

I presumed that the PJ had shown some pics while asking questions of
our “reluctant-to-answer” pair. Seems they must have been pretty
shocked at seeing that evidence. No wonder they shut up pronto.
As for the moans from their Legal’s now regarding the matter..laughable
really. Those pics must say a lot.

REPLY: Harry, I think that’s the first verse of the first hymn on the Team McCann hymn sheet, isn’t it?
Or is Hymn No. 1 that one that goes like this: “Tne Portuguese police are all incompetent and corrupt *******s”.
Ah yes, maybe it was that. After all, Team McCann asked us to pray to God on 3rd December against the (quote) ‘incompetent’ and ‘corrupt’ PJ - see the ‘Find Madeleine’ website.
Maybe one day there’ll be a Team McCann prayer book as well as a Team McCann hymn sheet.
And since the McCanns are reportedly ‘devout Catholics’, maybe a rosary bead bearing the legend: ‘All Hail Sir Richard Branson and Michael Caplan Q.C.’

Enjoyable, but the madness becomes also more and more creepy - which is in some way also enjoyable.

Lilith,
It is usually Murat, occasionally Robert Murat, but very rarely (by his girlfriend mainly) is it Bob, how he is known.
Maybe we should talk about Gerard and Katherine?
