Madeleine McCann: The Age Of Jose Anes, Gerry McCann’s Fury And Murat’s Nannies Know Best
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
THE SUN: “No one will ever stand trial”
Because no one has been charged with any crime?
Or: “NOBODY will EVER stand trial over missing Madeleine McCann because cops made so many vital blunders,” says the Sun. And so too says Jose Anes, 62: “Mistakes in the early hours demolished the entire case”
The ex-director of Lisbon’s police lab is “Portugal’s top forensic expert”, a billing the lab’s current director may dispute
Mr Anes says: “If the scene is not preserved in the first hours, all the hours of effort that follow are useless. I am utterly convinced — unless some new, concrete evidence suddenly emerges — the case will never reach trial”
But what of the evidence gathered so far, like the DNA samples found in the McCanns’ hire car?
“Maddie sniffer dog ‘was rigged’” - Gerry McCann is “FURIOUS” – as often he is. He “believes sniffer dogs used to find Maddie clues in the family’s hire car were MANIPULATED by cops”
Says a “source close to the couple”: “Gerry says a dog went up to the Scenic, sniffed around and went to head off. He watched the dog being brought back to the vehicle. Finally, it reacts around the boot area. Gerry was open-mouthed at that, he feels the dog was manoeuvred into a position where it could react”
And smell
“Murat pals ’saw him near flat’” – “SUSPECT Robert Murat was PALS with British holiday nannies who say they saw him the night Maddie vanished, it has emerged”
Good friends? “And at least two of the girls knew him well enough to be on first name terms”
That’s close, eh
“A source confirmed yesterday that he did befriend several girls, adding: ‘A lot are attractive and he made a beeline for them. When they were asked who was near the apartment that night, several mentioned Murat”
DAILY MAIL: “Madeleine: Forensics expert says inquiry is ‘complete waste’ because of police blunders at apartment”
Says Jose Manuel Anes: “Huge amounts of money were spent but if, in the first hours, the due precautions for the preservation of the crime scene were not taken, all this hard work goes down the drain. We can spend rivers of money which will all go down the drain if the crime scene is not properly isolated”
The McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell says: “It is alarming to hear that Mr Anes has this view. All we want, and have done throughout, is to ensure the operational police side of this has been done in an effective and efficient manner as possible”
And why is Mr Anes – “the 62-year-old” - speaking out now? Because he’s making his comments known in a book called The McCanns’ Guilt – not that the case will ever, come to trial, you understand
“Madeleine: Gerry’s fury at ‘bungling’ dog handlers” – More Gerry McCann fury
DAILY STAR: “MADDIE COPS HIDE WITNESS”
Says the paper: “The key witness in the Madeleine McCann inquiry was in hiding last night after fleeing Portugal” – Jane Tanner? Kate McCann? Gerry McCann? No, the unnamed Portuguese tapas waiter…
“Pals say he is terrified his identity is about to be revealed and claim he is also scared of British and Portuguese government influence in the probe…Friends add that he is worried about the private eyes hired by Gerry and Kate McCann, both 39, to help find their daughter”
One former work colleague of the waiter says: “He does not want to be involved in any of this. Through no fault of his own he finds himself at the heart of this worldwide mystery”
DAILY EXPRESS: “MADELEINE: WITNESS GOES ON THE RUN ‘TO PROTECT HIS EVIDENCE’”
“THE key witness in the missing Madeleine McCann case was in hiding last night after fleeing Portugal”
“POLICE WERE ‘SIDETRACKED’ BY MCCANNS” - Former police crime scene chief Jose Manuel Anes is “ONE of Portugal’s top forensic experts”
The WORLD’S GREATEST NEWSPAPER investigates. Mr Anes is “71”
And “last night hinted that Kate and Gerry McCann were partly to blame for the flawed investigation into their daughter’s disappearance”. Although the Sun says it was those bungling Portuguese police (see above)?
“They should not have been thinking of the poor little parents but I understand the human dimension and the pressure which immediately involved the investigators. Sometimes the police are too human. The police must be absolutely objective. Somebody’s suggestions and complaints connected to a person’s disappearance should be set aside while the evidence is being gathered. In the moments immediately following the occurrence the goal is to gather everything and preserve everything”
Not bungling, rather too caring; too human
DAILY MIRROR: “McCann DNA clue ‘useless’”
Jose Manuel Anes is 62. He is the retired head of Portugal’s police science laboratory.
He tells the Mirror, and everyone else: “I fear the case will never reach trial” - and even if it did, no jury would be able to convict anyone.
BBC: Audience for BBC News 24 peaked in 2007 at 8.2 million in the week ending 1 July for the bomb attack on Glasgow Airport and at 7.9 million for the story of the kidnapping of Madeleine McCann in the week ending 13 May

TB - I used to think of dear Maria as simply the resident nun (whatever happened to Mother oh-so Superior Bernadette aka Moderation?).
I now think of her as a resident Friend of Esther.

Yes, amazing how that magnificent tabloid escaped my ordinarily very diligent research.
And now, on to my donut…with a fresh, hot coffee!
Now THAT is something to be jealous of not having!
——————————————————————————-
You know perfectly well that I am desperately endeavouring to get the kitchen ready before Christmas, and yet you callously taunt me with tales of fresh hot coffee.
You swine, you unspeakable swine.
Just remember not to standard too close to a precipice on a dark night…

“Maria confuses me…”
REPLY: I think she is more than a tad confused herself. Assuming she is not on a pro-McCann mission, her comments can be interpreted as deriving from some genuine fascination with the case, but who is reluctant to criticise someone without good reason and likes to think the best of other people.
So she will take much persuasion, argument and facts to convince her that Team McCann are not telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth about what went on in Praia da Luz.
Her incessant doubting of almost all that I say, and apparent ignorance of a lot of what has gone on in the case, gets me searching for the source material, which is quite useful.
I doubt if she got a Grade A for ‘Precis’ at school, though. ‘Brevity is the soul of wit’

Hmm….I was just reaching for my delicious donut, when I read your post.
I am not sure I understand. But anyway, I do hope you are not being threated with litigation, libel actions, etc., as the rest of us are routinely when we write such stuff here. Godspeed, and i do appreciate your work, Annie.
If I had an extra donut and could fling it your way, I’d be only too ready to cheer you up.

Ah, News of the World! How could we have missed it?
But I don’t think the baby is mentioned at all in the Panorama special. I shall have to re-view it, in between the Python and the donut.

Probably by failing to google; it’s amazing what 2 minutes research will do.

A leak from the PJ claimed that Gerry McCann had sent 14 text messages on his mobile ‘phone BEFORE 10.00pm, when an hysterical Kate McCann raised the alarm.
This has been much discussed here on Anorak.
Given that the McCanns and the rest of the ‘Pact of Silence 9′ were supposed to be taking part in a quiz that night, some posters on here have made the observation that perhaps these were made as part of a ‘phone-a-friend’ plot to win the quiz.
It’s also been pointed out that - given that Gerry was away from the Tapas bar/wine/quiz from before 9.05pm to 9.25pm, allegedly checking on his children, failing to notice if Madeleine was there, and failing to sense an abductor behind the door in the apartment, and then chatting to Jerry ‘Jes’ Wilkins for 15 minutes about tennis and future ’social tennis events’ (version 1) or about child care arrangements (version 2) - Gerry must have missed quite a few questions that evening. We are not sure if the ‘joker’ was played during a round while he was absent.
The McCann-supporters on the forum here did not see the funny side of all this satirical scepticism.
And they maintain that the 14 text messages are ‘only a rumour’

You’re right–runners would need to hydrate very frequently, especially in hot summer months. Vigorous physical exercise such as the mcCanns weirdly took back then would involve a lot of sweating….Haircuts….Your points also explain jane Tanner’s very dramatic phsyical transformation–get clean, get hair cut, wait half a year to let hair grow out nicely, give interview…
It is an interesting, very interesting, take you have on it. So interesting that I cannot help but wonder: Have QC, Kris, or any promaccannite threatened you with litigation yet?

“by British diplomatic staff……staff from Bill Henderson’s office suggested the name of Robert Murat as a reliable translator who could be used in the police inquiry, in the days following Madeleine McCann’s disappearance. Murat was already known among diplomatic staff, as he had recommendation letters from Norfolk police, where he worked for ‘Bernard Matthews’, one of the largest poultry farm companies in the UK, which employs hundreds of Portuguese workers.
The fact that Robert Murat has acted, before as translator for Norfolk police, and the recommendation issued by Bill Henderson’s office, at the time the British Consul in Algarve, took police to accept the suggestion, according to PJ sources. After Murat was named a formal suspect, police went through all translations he had done, checking accuracy, but no problem was found, according to the same sources. Bill Henderson retired from his diplomatic post and went back to the UK in August.”
