Madeleine McCann: Praia da Luz Calls, Maddy Shunned And Portugal On The Edge
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY MAIL page 36: “Madeleine: Portuguese detectives trawl thousands of phone records”
Police are looking through phone records of Praia da Luz’a 27,000 residents at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance. They are looking for unusual call patterns. Bugging calls
A local resident of Praia da Luz says the police questioned her, saying: “We are investigating all calls made within Praia da Luz from 9.30pm onwards on May 3″
Says the McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell: “Any information could prove vital”
THE SUN page 15: “Maddie cops seize local phone bills”
“They are using a method of triangulation which pinpoints a person’s location via their mobile and are also checking land-line calls”
Can it work? Says the Sun: “Mobile phone evidence exposed holes in the alibi of Soham murderer Ian Huntley”. And that is similar to this case because..?
DAILY MIRROR front page: “MADDY – Blitz to fined phone clues”
Page 10: “COPS CHECK EVERY CALL ON DAY MADDY VANISHED”
Well, not every call. Just calls made in the area of Praia da Luz by those 1,000 persons on a police list
DAILY EXPRESS page 19: “Now Madeleine police seize all phone records”
The papers says the search is in light of talk of a “massive conspiracy”. The Express is belived to be fond of a conspiracy
Says Clarence Mitchell: “Kate and Gerry are encouraged by this police work because it shows the investigation is now active and thorough…Crucially they also hope it may lead to them being reunited with Madeleine”
DAILY STAR: “PARENTS SHY AWAY FROM NAME ‘MADDY’”
Or Madeleine, for that is her name
The name Madeleine is “now lower than at any time in the past five years”. It is now the 80th most popular name. Says a child psychologist called Ruth: “The majority of people who hear the name Madeleine automatically associate it with her”
What the top girl’s name is readers are not told, nor where Kate features. The Telegraph says it is “Grace”, as in Baby Grace
NEW YORK TIMES: “Portugal Polishes Its Image as the ‘West Coast of Europe’”
Portugal wants to reposition itself. Portugal is exciting, shiny, new and historical.
But: “The unsolved case remains a big story for the British tabloids, and there have been reports of declines in tourism from Britain, an important market for Portugal.
“Over all, though, tourism remains strong, Manuel Pinho, Portugal’s minister for the economy and innovation said. ‘This is a tragic case, of course, but it has not affected the numbers,’ he said. ‘It’s a very peaceful country, a very safe country’”

So….According to that little scenario…FM only gets approx £700,000 for his
“original contract”.
Yet….CM and GPMcC would have had already “let” him into the “Body” secret.
All this whilst a £2,500,000 Reward was available.
Hmmmm….. If I was FM in that case…..I know which I would have opted
to pick up. 2.5 million and bye bye CM and GPMcC. and long before Xmas
too.

If your child wakes in the night - you go check on them. My guess with star chart nonsense is that as parent’s they wanted to discipline Madeleine effectively for crying and being scared.
That is not what star charts are for. They are a reward system for good behaviour. Not for chastising a child for being scared.

Murat’s a curious character in the case isn’t he?
I can’t help thinking Mr Rebelo’s area of expertise is in conspiracies and that’s why he was brought in. He’s the type of guy that really doesn’t leave any stones unturned and that phrase is going to backfire on the McCanns.

Yes, that is my impression. They are waiting for Saturnalia to pass, because if the PJ busted the McCanns etc. over Christmas, then so many millions of people would whine that the PJ had ruined their holidays.
the new phone records news is probably just the PJs’ way of letting the McCanns know that at some point, they worked with a local accomplice/s.
I thought the REAL reason the McCann/Healey clans had cancelled their holidays is that they are struggling to deal with the fact that their loved ones will soon be in police custody in Portugal. How to deal with the shame of that? The encroaching sense of impending dread….
You know, with the Nattalee case in Aruba, they never found her body, but the PJ have WAY more circumstantial evidence in THIS case, imperfect as it may be, than the Aruban police EVER had to go on there. And good circumstantial evidence can result in a conviction without a body. It just has to be put together correctly.
The fact Madeleine’s disappeared for a long time, the fact that she is a very small child and unable to care for herself independently, and the fact that there is no evidence whatsoever of abduction, raises a presumption that she is dead. It would be different if she were a 14-year-old girl, capable of walking some distance on her own two feet, and feeding herself.

Yes Tinsel, it’s very odd that “everyone else” was checking the McCann children, yet the other children were not checked by Gerry. What was so important about the apartment that the McCann children were in? ….. apart from a wee bit of useless information that one of them was probably already “missing” and the scene was being set …………

Francisco is not such a fool after all. Just think about it:
- Gerry says: Francisco the plan is you get paid 6 months. Just make sure you find the body around xmas OK.
- Francisco says: Fine I’ll find it just before my contract ends.
Next month: Francisco to the press: “We’ll find her before christmas”.
Next day:
- Clarence to Gerry: That spanish tosser revealed our plan to the world. No way we can produce her body now… it’ll look too suspicious.
- Gerry says: You’re right - let’s just tell the bastard to shut up and pay him another few millions to pretend to be doing some work until May… he could then find the body.
Francisco get’s a few extra bob and no questions asked…
IMHO of course

I think the Tapas bar quiz night is as credible as the timeline i.e. it’s probably always been an invention.
If there really was a quiz taking place that night then where were the other guests? Wouldn’t the place be packed? Wouldn’t there be a quizmaster?

Yes, she’s an interesting one to analyze. She’s the last person in the frame in the tram video. I think she may have been the one to post it on YouTube in June 2007.
She was the one who stated firmly, “everyone was responsible for their own kids that evening.” Which is the only Tapas to verbally try to separate themselves from the group.
And yet, as someone on this forum pointed out before, the Tapas were checking on the McCann children. However, Gerry, did not, in turn, check on their children in the further away apartments.
She sat at the table when everyone left, as if she didn’t want to be including in the production.
I think she disapproves of what’s been going on.
If this was a mystery novel, she’d be the next to be knocked off.

I think you’re probably right that Murat was at chaplin’s on the 2nd but I’m not sure that’s how they met him. Assuming that Madeleine died of an accident and Murat played a role in disposing of her body it would be unlikely that the McCanns would confide on someone that they’d met some hours before.
In fact, I think that the suggestions made by the McCann’s lawyers that digital pictures could be altered came just a few days after news in the portuguese press suggested that the PJ (with the help of the British police) had compiled significant evidence (possibly even PHOTOS) that Murat and the McCanns had met well before the holiday in PDL. (IMO those are the pictures the lawyers will want to challenge in court).
I still think that there’s something a lot more sinister to this. Murat and the McCanns knew each other yet they never admitted it. Yet, Murat is very likely involved in disposal of Madeleiene’s body. What’s in it for him? What’s the gain or the fear that made Murat help out the McCanns?

Their denials are amateurish and almost remind you of children and the way they lie to prevent a telling off. I’ve experienced a few compulsive liars in my time and the way you can confront them with evidence and watch them still talk their way out of it is really unbelievable.

Agree with you on that in the light of Gerry’s infamous ear-tugging denial of sedating the children !! All of the videos which are readily available on YouTube etc, are so incriminating as to be almost laughable, that and the “Clonk - and she’s gone ” one of course !!

Why fake an abduction?
The money…. Did you notice how, in the Corner film footage on Panorama, Gerry points to his poster and metions “J.K. Rowlings?” She sent in the big bucks. That must have really been an eye-opener to the McCanns. And then suddenly, they are flying all over the globe, for free, telling the world how to take better care of children.
You know, I could be wrong on this (so feel free to correct), but I was surprised that GM met with Walsh, the “Most Wanted” guy. I don’t think it was ever proved that Walsh’s son Adam was killed by a pedophile, was it? But Walsh made a career out of this claim. It may seem cynical, and I do pity anyone who loses their child for any reason, but what if Adam had been killed by someone else? Perhaps someone who bore a grudge to the Walshes, or someone who owed them money or to whom they owed money….has the crime of Adam Walsh ever been solved?
My point is that here, you have two doctors who obviously don’t care very much about practicing medicine, or that’s what they would be doing in the first place. Gerry is making political moves long before he goes to PDL, and Kate is switcheroo on her specializations, tangled up in complicated IVF pregnancies, and not working very much at all….
And then suddenly, in the wake of great tragedy, they both find something to do.
Within the confines of their new PDL quarters, they call friends in media and, within hours of Madeleine’s disappearance, have launched new careers for themselves as child-hunting, child-protecting celebrities. And they make millions of pounds in, well, weeks.
Serious docs wanting to do good for children might say, well, let us take off for the Congo and ministrate to the truly destitute….
Instead, the McCanns have truly helped themselves financially, and not only is it odious and unattractive, but it makes the public question their true characters.

Yes, I get that impression. I think Mr Rebelo was brought in because of his experience dealing with large groups of people who conspire to commit crime. I think also that he has tightened everything up to make it watertight.

“Here’s the Times article talking about the Millenium - it was Tinsel who mentioned that restaurant.”
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article2414796.ece
“At the Ocean Club all four families had apartments in Waterside Gardens Block 5, which overlooked one of two pool and restaurant areas on the resort. It was not a gated site and Gerry’s and Kate’s ground floor apartment, 5a, was on a street corner. The group occupied two of the neighbouring apartments, 5b and 5d, and another on the floor above. ”
I had been led to believe that 4 apartments were ground floor. Whose apartment was on the floor above? THAT must be the apartment from which Kate shouted her warning on the balcony. Seems to me this article mentions 5a (McCanns on the corner) and “neighbouring apartments, 5b and 5d”. What the hell happened to 5c?
This seems like a deliberate attempt to avoid saying that there are FIVE apartments involved. Or am I wrong that other sources listed the 4 apatments as 5abcd?
“On the first night, Saturday, April 28, the adults and children all ate together at the Ocean Club’s other location, some 10 minutes away, the Millennium Restaurant and Terrace.”
10 minutes by car?
“But the next night, and for all the nights thereafter…”
Note the odd phrasing. Why not something like, “but after that…”? Why distinguish “the next night” AND “all the nights thereafter”?
BECAUSE “the next night” was different, that’s why.
“…all four families settled the children in their apartments and then walked down to the nearby Tapas restaurant with its open air tables offering a clear line of sight to the apartments, about 50 metres away. ”
This article is Sept9 2007 and yet it STILL contains the distance lie propagated by Gerry McLiar. The spin is sweet — on the next night they “walked down to the nearby Tapas restaurant” but it is not said that they ate there. It’s just cleverly implied.
Damn, if you want to get some simple straight facts from these people, well, it’s like pulling teeth…

To me it feels like they are now only giving the final touches ie. who else knew and who else was actively involved in the plan.
