Madeleine McCann: 20 Years Of Fury, Kate And Gerry McCann Prime Suspects, Robert Murat Says Nothing
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY MIRROR front page: “YOU’RE STILL PRIME SUSPECTS – McCanns’ fury at police chief warning”
“Kate and Gerry McCann were furious last night after learning they are still prime suspects in daughter Madeleine’s disappearance”
It is now the 105th time Kate and Gerry have reacted with fury of been furious in a tabloid setting
“The couple’s hopes of being cleared today were crushed when police chief Paulo Rebelo asked a judge to extend their arguido status because detectives are sticking to their belief that they accidentally killed the four-year-old”
This was predictable. Robert Murat also remains a suspect
Says McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell: “They are frustrated and angry. Frustrated because, yet again, there appears to be no movement in the case when they know they are innocent. They will continue to push for their arguido status to be lifted”
The Correio da Manha newspaper “claimed Kate and Gerry, of Rothley, Leics, could be charged with perjury and wasting police time”
But don’t the police waste enough of that themselves?
“They have been warned by their legal team they may have to go to the European Court of Human Rights to get their arguido status lifted”
Human rights? What of Madeleine’s rights?
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE - McCANNS ARE MAIN SUSPECTS SAY POLICE”
“Kate and Gerry McCann were dealt a crushing blow last night when a police report accused them of killing their daughter Madeleine”
Says a friend: “They are not the prime suspects. As we understand it, the report talks about the police’s continued belief that Madeleine died accidentally in the apartment and that is why Kate and Gerry remain arguidos. It also talks about Robert Murat remaining an arguido and it discusses the possibility of her being abducted. Well, they can’t have it both ways”
No..?
Says Clarence Mitchell: “Throughout 2007 we have declined to comment on speculation in the Portuguese press. We will follow the same policy in 2008. If this report is true, however, and this interim police report exists, then we believe it contains nothing new. It is simply a restatement of the current position of the police. And we note that it not only discusses Kate and Gerry as arguidos, but also continues to name Mr Murat as an arguido. Crucially it also accepts the possibility that abduction took place”
The green shoots of hope…
THE SUN front page: “McCANN AGONY GOES ON – 246 after Maddie vanished, cops name Kate and Gerry as…PRIME SUSPECTS”
“ANGUISHED Kate and Gerry McCann are facing up to living as suspects over their daughter’s disappearance for another TWENTY years, it emerged yesterday”
Maybe…
Kate and Gerry are “both 39-year-old doctors”
Fact!
DAILY MAIL: “Police ’still think McCanns killed Madeleine by accident’ - and they will be suspects for 20 years”
“A secret police dossier has accused Kate and Gerry McCann of accidentally killing their daughter and hiding her body, it was claimed yesterday. The couple faked four-year-old Madeleine’s abduction, according to a leaked report on the eight-month police investigation”
Lawyer Edward Smethurst, who is co-ordinating the McCanns’ defence, says: “Any report about the leaked document we believe is completely without substance. We think it arises out of pure speculation on the part of the Portuguese papers”
Kate and Gerry McCann are “doctors”
THE SCOTSMAN: “Madeleine’s parents could be under suspicion for 20 years, says judge”
“The prospect of the case dragging on for years was reinforced yesterday by the president of the National Union of Portuguese Judges, Antonio Martins, who said: ‘No-one knows what type of crime was committed. If it was homicide, the investigation can only be shelved after 20 years; if it was kidnap, 15 years’”
On we go…
THE OBSERVER: “After a year in which the torment of Madeleine McCann’s family has dominated the British media, the trials of the Lees - and the hope the new image has given them - seem particularly acute”
The story: “Katrice disappeared on her second birthday from a supermarket in Germany, where her father was serving as a soldier. Her mother turned away for a few moments to fetch a pack of crisps for the girl’s party and when she looked back Katrice was gone”
Twenty six years ago…
FOX NEWS: “Missing Madeleine McCann: Irish Witness ‘Clears’ Murat”
Says Martin Smith, who was on holiday in Praia da Luz: “I told police it was definitely not him because the man wasn’t as big as Murat - I think I would have recognised him because I’d met him several times previously. He was wearing beige trousers and a darker top. We all put him in his early 40s and I didn’t think he was Portuguese”

but may be related another CV entry elsewhere.

Sorry folks, have to go now.
mr Tony Bennet, I [like others] have had problems accessing the site yesterday. Posted my reply to you [re the twins at the creche] at the other thread. Bye, will be back in the evening.

REPLY: It is a rather hagiographic entry about Esther McVey on Wikipedia which looks as though it is largely self-penned. Whatever good she has done in the past, I suspect her role in the ‘Find Madeleine Trust’ may cause her quite a bit of professional embarrassment in the future

That’s the point I was making. He seems to make these judgements based on his own scientific logic rather than the law of the land almost as if it is nature taking its course.
I’ve got a bee in my bonnet now. Another more analogous example concerning the same person - a dentist - was when he parked his car in a supermarket car park for about a minute and left his six-year-old son seat-belted in the car with it locked. Unfortunately he left the hand brake on and the car rolled into the kerb of the opposite bay.
Nothing terrible happened but several people saw it and it was reported to the police. They threatened to make charges but never did and he was warned.
What shocked me though, was his arrogance at why the police were involved at all and why people had poked their noses into his business. He felt that it was his mistake for which he had received adequate punishment for the shock it had caused him and was seemingly impassive to the law of the land. It was a matter for him and him alone. I remember also being astounded by his seeming ‘oh well accidents will happen but no harm done’ attitude.
It is not beyond belief to conclude that certain medical people may take the same attitude. Accident not caused by them in a foreign country. Quick huddle with friends. No point in getting the police involved. We can deal with this. We’re professional people dealing with death every day of our lives.

Yes, I saw that bit on Panorama you referred to and yes, it gave a very poor impression indeed. I was shocked. Bet she’s livid with the friend who made the video for not editing it out! Must have been dozens of off-the -cuff comments from the way it was presented. I was surprised they’d even let the programme maker use it, especially unedited.
I was referring to more recent stuff though. But anyway, whatever happened to Madeleine, she’d be in a pretty dreadful state of mind. Notice she can’t face working. Maybe GM finds it therapeutic, or it’s a desperate attempt to establish some sort of normality, whatever the truth of what happened. They need an income anyway. KM doesn’t seem able to do that. Maybe she never will. It seems to have taken her longer to be even able to face leaving Portugal. Press reports (so probably wrong!!) said GM and other family members wanted to come home much earlier to establish some sort of normality but she kept refusing. She doesn’t look anywhere near normal to me but then, the press manipulate photos to make her look distraught, desperate, ill, evil, thinner, wonderful, loving, ugly, attractive etc. just as they wish. Difficult tell.
Have a nice day. If today’s reports are true, it shouldn’t be long before we get a bit nearer the real truth.

I think that the “loss” of a child through neglect would lead to a more
serious charge/punishment that a similar kind of neglect but without
a child being lost.
Am no Social Worker nor a Judge though.

Does anybody think that this narcissistic pair would be able to ‘do bird’ if they were ever wrongfully imprisoned - because they did not kill their daughter? Neither do I.
My concern is that they would ‘do themselves in’ before they could be wrongfully convicted. I am concerned that with Kate’s mood swings from being ‘furious’ to being at ‘breaking point’ cannot be good for her mental health and I think she should be looked after 24/7.
I am sure that once the PJ have re-interviewed JT etc and they all have a giggle over a cup of tea and people like JT explain that the PJ jotted the wrong times down because of the language barrier then the McCanns will not be wrongly convicted and will live happily ever after in an even bigger house with lots of cash from suing everybody who has upset them. I hope they and their friends open their own hospitals and child-care centres everywhere. Like McCann Centres of Excellence.

Speculation has it that Mrs K McCann is setting up her own business called “Top Tottie Brass Knob Polishing Services”. All clients, however, must have government, business or media connections.

One of the many reasons that I got interested in this case was because of the help of the Consulate given to the McCanns.
Having lived and worked abroad for over 8 years, I saw first hand how our consuls ‘help’ Brits abroad.

Hi Matt,
{..}but the others didn’t “lose” any of their offspring…so a bit less
serious.
No, if it’s considered as neglect, then it’s not less serious, it’s a matter of principles IMO.
On the other hand if MM hadn’t disappeared [no matter how] then nobody would even know about this all.
I think they should have had a visit or two though.

Yes. And, as I said last night, I can understand the French government’s doing everything possible to help the French NGO people who tried to smuggle children out of Chad, even though they had obviously broken the law and nobody was denying it.
But Portugal is not Chad. It is a democracy and has been in the European Union since, I think, 1986. There is absolutely no reason for Britain to go meddling in Portugal’s legal system as far as I can see. And, as you say, there must be the hell of a lot of innocent (or guilty) people languishing in prisons less developed countries, where the whole concept of life is different, that are receiving no real help at all.

Just read the post about the McCs at the pantomime with the twins . Isn’t it strange how they want things to be “NORMAL” now. They should have thought about normality back in May and remembered that it isn’t NORMAL to leave little tots alone and crying in a strange apartment!

Yes, I should have said her connection was with the media rather than the Labour Party. For the record, here are some extracts from the Wikipedia article about her:
