Madeleine McCann: 20 Years Of Fury, Kate And Gerry McCann Prime Suspects, Robert Murat Says Nothing
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY MIRROR front page: “YOU’RE STILL PRIME SUSPECTS – McCanns’ fury at police chief warning”
“Kate and Gerry McCann were furious last night after learning they are still prime suspects in daughter Madeleine’s disappearance”
It is now the 105th time Kate and Gerry have reacted with fury of been furious in a tabloid setting
“The couple’s hopes of being cleared today were crushed when police chief Paulo Rebelo asked a judge to extend their arguido status because detectives are sticking to their belief that they accidentally killed the four-year-old”
This was predictable. Robert Murat also remains a suspect
Says McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell: “They are frustrated and angry. Frustrated because, yet again, there appears to be no movement in the case when they know they are innocent. They will continue to push for their arguido status to be lifted”
The Correio da Manha newspaper “claimed Kate and Gerry, of Rothley, Leics, could be charged with perjury and wasting police time”
But don’t the police waste enough of that themselves?
“They have been warned by their legal team they may have to go to the European Court of Human Rights to get their arguido status lifted”
Human rights? What of Madeleine’s rights?
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE - McCANNS ARE MAIN SUSPECTS SAY POLICE”
“Kate and Gerry McCann were dealt a crushing blow last night when a police report accused them of killing their daughter Madeleine”
Says a friend: “They are not the prime suspects. As we understand it, the report talks about the police’s continued belief that Madeleine died accidentally in the apartment and that is why Kate and Gerry remain arguidos. It also talks about Robert Murat remaining an arguido and it discusses the possibility of her being abducted. Well, they can’t have it both ways”
No..?
Says Clarence Mitchell: “Throughout 2007 we have declined to comment on speculation in the Portuguese press. We will follow the same policy in 2008. If this report is true, however, and this interim police report exists, then we believe it contains nothing new. It is simply a restatement of the current position of the police. And we note that it not only discusses Kate and Gerry as arguidos, but also continues to name Mr Murat as an arguido. Crucially it also accepts the possibility that abduction took place”
The green shoots of hope…
THE SUN front page: “McCANN AGONY GOES ON – 246 after Maddie vanished, cops name Kate and Gerry as…PRIME SUSPECTS”
“ANGUISHED Kate and Gerry McCann are facing up to living as suspects over their daughter’s disappearance for another TWENTY years, it emerged yesterday”
Maybe…
Kate and Gerry are “both 39-year-old doctors”
Fact!
DAILY MAIL: “Police ’still think McCanns killed Madeleine by accident’ - and they will be suspects for 20 years”
“A secret police dossier has accused Kate and Gerry McCann of accidentally killing their daughter and hiding her body, it was claimed yesterday. The couple faked four-year-old Madeleine’s abduction, according to a leaked report on the eight-month police investigation”
Lawyer Edward Smethurst, who is co-ordinating the McCanns’ defence, says: “Any report about the leaked document we believe is completely without substance. We think it arises out of pure speculation on the part of the Portuguese papers”
Kate and Gerry McCann are “doctors”
THE SCOTSMAN: “Madeleine’s parents could be under suspicion for 20 years, says judge”
“The prospect of the case dragging on for years was reinforced yesterday by the president of the National Union of Portuguese Judges, Antonio Martins, who said: ‘No-one knows what type of crime was committed. If it was homicide, the investigation can only be shelved after 20 years; if it was kidnap, 15 years’”
On we go…
THE OBSERVER: “After a year in which the torment of Madeleine McCann’s family has dominated the British media, the trials of the Lees - and the hope the new image has given them - seem particularly acute”
The story: “Katrice disappeared on her second birthday from a supermarket in Germany, where her father was serving as a soldier. Her mother turned away for a few moments to fetch a pack of crisps for the girl’s party and when she looked back Katrice was gone”
Twenty six years ago…
FOX NEWS: “Missing Madeleine McCann: Irish Witness ‘Clears’ Murat”
Says Martin Smith, who was on holiday in Praia da Luz: “I told police it was definitely not him because the man wasn’t as big as Murat - I think I would have recognised him because I’d met him several times previously. He was wearing beige trousers and a darker top. We all put him in his early 40s and I didn’t think he was Portuguese”

Which was that, Matt? I don’t remember or maybe I didn’t see it. I know both her parents have referred to her as “my daughter”.
I THINK I remember the father saying on TV once,
“My daughter would never do that.”
Do you think you detect some sort of breach between them and KM and/or GM? Since when? Do you think they’ve become suspicious recently? They did go out to Portugal didn’t they? One saw them quite often, or at least, KM’s mother. I don’t know about GM’s mother.
If the McCanns’ parents suspected, that would put a different slant on things for me. I’ve always thought that if KM was likely to have harmed Madeleine, her in-laws would be the first to suspect!!!! But one of GM’s sisters was even with her at the big interrogation wasn’t she? I also thought that family members, in-laws especially, would know if GM had a filthy temper or might ever have hurt any of the children. One of the things that influenced my thinking was the way they stuck together through thick and thin.
If it was me, I’d still want to know the truth even if it involved my own flesh and blood. Especially if my grandchild had been harmed.

If they caused Madeleine’s death they might have decided to cover it up to either save their jobs or to avoid admitting that they neglected their children by leaving them alone. We know that Gerry lied to his sister and said the shutter had been forced open - so we know that is something they worried about.
Gerry obviously loves the media, that kind of sympathy, support and attention is addictive. Also, by now they may believe they’re telling the truth.
Whatever the publicity has been about, it hasn’t been about finding Madeleine. The chances of a member of the public coming across her, even if she was alive, is remote. It would more likely be a police officer or other official coming in contact with the perpetrator over something else.
Their actions would be wicked if they’re guilty, but there’s something so pathetic about it, I would feel sorry for them.

I’ve been to Spain many times but the last time I set foot in Magaluf, Majorca, I was sickened by the sight of a huge TV screen outside a bar called the London Pub. Considering there was a family hotel across the street (Hotel Honolulu), it was an absolute disgrace to see porno cartoons as families with children walked past this place. Of course, this place was a hit with Brit lager louts.

314 I agree.
When I go abroad Im going there BECAUSE is different and I hate it when it isnt. Thats why I dont really like the European Union, not because Im anti Europe, but because they are making all the countries the same. I used to love getting the different foreign currencies and the fun of working it out if I was being ‘done’ or not!
I remember when I was 17 I first went to Calais all on my own (on the Hovercraft from Dover with the old day passport) as my first European adventure! I felt so brave and it was all so exotic - I had my first ‘escargot’ and tried frogs legs (as thats all I knew about French cuisine!).
Now its like going to Folkestone or Ramsgate!
One good thing is that the Parisians hate us (the English) and make no attempt to speak English - though I only have schoolboy French (and got chucked out before the end for mucking about!) it made me have a go, a lot of fun!

We don’t often get anything like 24ª. Either -8 or +40. Either a drout (spelling?) or pouring down every day, etc. Slight exaggeration maybe, but very extreme here in central Spain.

I know what you mean. The UK is incredibly damp with the cold and I think that’s why it feels so nasty. Surprisingly here, the cold somehow doesn’t feel half as bad as I remember from the UK. As it’s so dry, you can’t help generating huge sparks all the time…

Yeah…thanks. I tried it yesterday but as I’ve never done cropping in my camera, I couldn’t find out how to do it and I didn’t have my manual to hand. As I wasn’t able to modify the image in the camera I couldn’t tell either way. What’s interesting about my theory of them modifying the image inside the camera to tweak the date is that it could account for the bad cropping/composition of the pool photo.

Relatively speaking…yes.
But in reality here…is very Brass monkey weather.
January 4th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
Sorry Ian that is where we part company, imo the McCanns will never be charged with anything, Mr. Carvalho statement only reinforces that view. If the Police know what happend they should arrest the guilty now, as they have not arrested anyone I doubt they have any evidence or any idea what happend. The Hague will end up ruling on the validity of this case, as the Portuguese are plainly unable to do so.

274 Matt. Do you mean like the one they made up and dragged us into? lol McCanns World A world of make-believe and illusion? One minute it’s here and the next minute it’s gone. Watch my left hand and then you won’t know what my right-hand is doing. Especially my right-hand clan. McClanns World should be the name coz I think the others should get royalties from loyalties lol.
Watch me in Rome. Why didn’t you see much of me in Huelva? Watch us jog and play tennis where we know we’re not bugged so we can chat about things. What were the other clan members up to whilst we were being seen here there and everywhere.

I know. But isn’t it embarrassing to hear Brits abroad when you’re out and about? One reason I enjoy France so much is because they don’t pander to the wants of Brits like they do in Spain. I love Spain as well but it’s sad they’ve allowed resorts to become versions of Blackpool abroad.

Mrs Healy is dying to tell us all, in my opinion!
She is the ONLY ONE to have said openly ‘they made a mistake’ which is a definate step in the right direction and gains the sympathy the McCanns are dying for.
If the stupid fools just admitted that they had done the wrong thing in leaving their children night after night unsupervised and alone, not because they should have been worried about abductors, but because quite simply IT WAS UNSAFE PRACTICE.
Even now, I think, they’d gain back public sympathy and reduce suspicions.
The fact that they have never done this is telling, it tells us they were in self defence mode from the night they say Madeleine was ’snatched’. In fact it tells us that the whole 3rd of May story is a pack of lies (in my unsubstantiated except by video footage and newspaper reports opinion).
Last bit added for Sledgie.

throwing themselves on peoples mercy? IF they cleared the mud sticking to Murat first, but I think it would depend on the wherebouts of Madeleine, and the respectful condition of her whereabouts - there are two potential ‘victims’ here, one we know without doubt is entirely innocent whether alive or dead or possibly ina vegatative state somewhere

Yes…had to laugh one day when I was having a bit of a spat with stig.
He/she was insisting that the McCann’s should only be interviewed in
England where they could be asked questions regarding the case in
English. He/she was repeatedly averring that this was right and proper
and that an interview in Portugal would be wrong because of the language
“difficulties”.
He/she had no answer to being informed that Mr Rebelo speaks perfect English
and actually spent some of his early Police career in England.

We’ve been down to -8C at night, which is cold enough. Seems to have improved a bit now, temperature wise, but we’ve been getting some rain. Nice day today though. I’ve put the tortoises out to sunbathe.

I’ve been looking at Madeleine’s height versus the height of the “Madeleine” in the playground pic.
When you look how tiny Madeleine is on the video as she boards that plane, the girl in playground seems way too tall to be that same girl IMO. I’m 6ft tall and 35 inches comes up to my groin - virtually at the centre of a sporran if I wore one. From “playground” it looks like Madeleine would be a lot higher than this but then again, Gerry isn’t 6ft tall is he? What do you think? Playground Madeleine seems too leggy compared to the girl boarding that plane.
