Madeleine McCann: 20 Years Of Fury, Kate And Gerry McCann Prime Suspects, Robert Murat Says Nothing
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY MIRROR front page: “YOU’RE STILL PRIME SUSPECTS – McCanns’ fury at police chief warning”
“Kate and Gerry McCann were furious last night after learning they are still prime suspects in daughter Madeleine’s disappearance”
It is now the 105th time Kate and Gerry have reacted with fury of been furious in a tabloid setting
“The couple’s hopes of being cleared today were crushed when police chief Paulo Rebelo asked a judge to extend their arguido status because detectives are sticking to their belief that they accidentally killed the four-year-old”
This was predictable. Robert Murat also remains a suspect
Says McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell: “They are frustrated and angry. Frustrated because, yet again, there appears to be no movement in the case when they know they are innocent. They will continue to push for their arguido status to be lifted”
The Correio da Manha newspaper “claimed Kate and Gerry, of Rothley, Leics, could be charged with perjury and wasting police time”
But don’t the police waste enough of that themselves?
“They have been warned by their legal team they may have to go to the European Court of Human Rights to get their arguido status lifted”
Human rights? What of Madeleine’s rights?
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE - McCANNS ARE MAIN SUSPECTS SAY POLICE”
“Kate and Gerry McCann were dealt a crushing blow last night when a police report accused them of killing their daughter Madeleine”
Says a friend: “They are not the prime suspects. As we understand it, the report talks about the police’s continued belief that Madeleine died accidentally in the apartment and that is why Kate and Gerry remain arguidos. It also talks about Robert Murat remaining an arguido and it discusses the possibility of her being abducted. Well, they can’t have it both ways”
No..?
Says Clarence Mitchell: “Throughout 2007 we have declined to comment on speculation in the Portuguese press. We will follow the same policy in 2008. If this report is true, however, and this interim police report exists, then we believe it contains nothing new. It is simply a restatement of the current position of the police. And we note that it not only discusses Kate and Gerry as arguidos, but also continues to name Mr Murat as an arguido. Crucially it also accepts the possibility that abduction took place”
The green shoots of hope…
THE SUN front page: “McCANN AGONY GOES ON – 246 after Maddie vanished, cops name Kate and Gerry as…PRIME SUSPECTS”
“ANGUISHED Kate and Gerry McCann are facing up to living as suspects over their daughter’s disappearance for another TWENTY years, it emerged yesterday”
Maybe…
Kate and Gerry are “both 39-year-old doctors”
Fact!
DAILY MAIL: “Police ’still think McCanns killed Madeleine by accident’ - and they will be suspects for 20 years”
“A secret police dossier has accused Kate and Gerry McCann of accidentally killing their daughter and hiding her body, it was claimed yesterday. The couple faked four-year-old Madeleine’s abduction, according to a leaked report on the eight-month police investigation”
Lawyer Edward Smethurst, who is co-ordinating the McCanns’ defence, says: “Any report about the leaked document we believe is completely without substance. We think it arises out of pure speculation on the part of the Portuguese papers”
Kate and Gerry McCann are “doctors”
THE SCOTSMAN: “Madeleine’s parents could be under suspicion for 20 years, says judge”
“The prospect of the case dragging on for years was reinforced yesterday by the president of the National Union of Portuguese Judges, Antonio Martins, who said: ‘No-one knows what type of crime was committed. If it was homicide, the investigation can only be shelved after 20 years; if it was kidnap, 15 years’”
On we go…
THE OBSERVER: “After a year in which the torment of Madeleine McCann’s family has dominated the British media, the trials of the Lees - and the hope the new image has given them - seem particularly acute”
The story: “Katrice disappeared on her second birthday from a supermarket in Germany, where her father was serving as a soldier. Her mother turned away for a few moments to fetch a pack of crisps for the girl’s party and when she looked back Katrice was gone”
Twenty six years ago…
FOX NEWS: “Missing Madeleine McCann: Irish Witness ‘Clears’ Murat”
Says Martin Smith, who was on holiday in Praia da Luz: “I told police it was definitely not him because the man wasn’t as big as Murat - I think I would have recognised him because I’d met him several times previously. He was wearing beige trousers and a darker top. We all put him in his early 40s and I didn’t think he was Portuguese”

It can only get worse before getting better IMO. If the McCanns are charged then all those people who supported them and said it was ok to leave kids alone because “everyone’s done it…” will be eating lots of humble pie. That’s a hell of a lot of pie and there will be pandemonium. Assuming charges are raised and a trial ensues, I’m surprised because Mr Branson may feel echoes of his support coming back to haunt him via his Virgin Empire. I’ve flown them many times but I vote with my feet and wallet and will give a wide berth to any public supporters of whoever did Madeleine wrong. I’m sure others will as well.

involvement in the case.

OK. Will look out for signs. I do remember the grandparents saying they were going to leave presents under the tree for Madeleine.
A breach would be significant. I will look closely at reports involving family from now on. You can’t judge others by yourself and you never know how you’d react in certain circumstances but I don’t think I’d defend even my son or daughter if they did something such as the McCanns are suspected of doing. I think I’d have to tell the truth.
KAREN
I know what you mean about it being “pathetic” as you say but I would still think of all the suffering they’d caused their family and friends in addition to whatever happened to Madeleine in the first place. If they turn out to be guilty, I’m afraid those will be the thoughts uppermost in my mind. I’d be less forgiving than you, at least in my feelings.
STEVO
Why the personal abuse? I am NOT sledgehammer and nor do I try to stir any pot. I have as interest in the case and would like to know the truth. Nothing that I have ever said has had ANY other motive than looking for the truth. That sometimes involves pointing out what I consider to be possible errors in other people’s arguments.
I am particularly sorry for your comment given that I always tended to see you as similarly motivated even though your hunches are, at the moment, different from mine.
Ironically, if I had had time yesterday, after Ian’s uncalled for rudeness (even though M and A had asked him to stop), I was going to suggest he adopt your courteous method of real debate, well demonstrated when you pointed out why I might be wrong in my interpretation of GM’s “No comment” comment. After reading your reply to me I actually went back to look at the clip again and reconsider. (Undecided, by the way.)
Good job I didn’t, apparently.
Perhaps there really is no hope of vigorous but civilised debate here.

As I recall Stevo you are the one who declared the McCanns guilty your evidence must be better than the Police have, why dont you send it to them, case closed. You presume any who are not of your mind set to be pro McCann, try pro justice, or do you like to dispense your own American style.
________________
1. You recalled wrong. Show me where I declared the McCanns guilty.
2. I never said I had evidence the police don’t have. You talk stupid.
3. I don’t know what mindset I am and have no problem with other people thinking what they want. I do object to stupidity though.
4. Pro justice doesn’t mean coming in here and telling us all the police are useless and have done everything wrong.
5. What is American style justice? It’s closer to Portuguese justice than the UK system which allows double jeopardy.
If you have anything sensible to debate then fine. If you want to ram stupidity down our throats like we’re as daft as you then expect this kind of reply.

Precisely! Two daffodil doctors are not doing the UK any favours. This has caused more harm than we could have dreamed about 8 months ago. This must be anathema to the government - something not seen since the likes of Jack the Ripper methinks!

Philip Tomlinson, 76, a lawyer HM Coroner for Leicester North

Michael Linnet - one of the Fund directors is in the top 120 richest in the UK. The people involved here are not just rich - they are off the scale rich:
Michael Linnett, a retired accountant - Linnett made to 120th place on the Sunday Times Rich List in 2001 through his marriage to wife Freddie, who inherited a large stake in Charles Street Buildings (Leicester) from her uncle in 1991. Profits fell by £10m in 1999m but the company still has net assets of £223.3m, the Sunday Times reports, and the Linnetts have £40m of family assets to shelter them from the whims of the property market. Freedie Linnett (a former secretary) was once the second richest woman in Britain after the Queen. Educated by nuns in a convent, she learned shorthand and typing and joined her Irish uncles Hugh and Paddy’s property firm in Leicestershire. Recent accounts show that the business made a profit of almost £32.3m and its net assets had risen to £264m. Between 1995 and 2001, Linnett and the Murphy family received dividends of £47m.

Someone mentioned the other day that Gordon Brown alluded to the fact that he had to prepare people for the shock.
Several posters said they had no idea what could be so shocking that us jaded posters would need to be prepared.
I just had a rather strange vision.

What’s funny about your posts is that you say things you have no idea about. You weren’t there at any interviews so have no idea of the methods used. Basically you have your own vision about everything and base your ideas on that. That’s nothing new. It’s called “prejudice”.

January 4th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
The Police made a serious a very serious error of judgement, with regard to their questioning of the suspects. If they indeed suspected both parents of complicity, they should have questioned both at the same time in different parts of the Police station, this would also include Mr Murat if the Police suspected his involvement, the fact that they questioned all separately and on different days beggars belief, amateurish at the very least and a cock up whatever way you look at it.

John McCann June 11:
Madeleine’s uncle, John McCann, said: “Someone out there knows a sliver of information and we may change our strategy over the next couple of weeks.”
The Find Madeleine Fund now stands at £700,000 and business, sports stars and celebrities have put up a reward of more than £2.5million.
A team of trustees, including parents Gerry and Kate McCann, control how the fund’s cash is spent.
John, who is a trustee, said they were reluctant to go give crooks money.
He added: “We have the compassionate world on our side. Anyone with a shred of decency is on our side.
“The question is, how do we compel a heartless criminal to do some good? We don’t know the answer but we are working on it.
“We may make more use of the reward money. Someone may then turn him in. Money is what these b******s listen to.

Why would the PJ not take all the time they are allowed to take, and make the most of it ? Time is on their side. Their silence and the way they take their time is rather impressive I think, and strategically speaking (is this good English???), it proves enfuriating for those who are under scrutiny.
