Madeleine McCann: 20 Years Of Fury, Kate And Gerry McCann Prime Suspects, Robert Murat Says Nothing
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY MIRROR front page: “YOU’RE STILL PRIME SUSPECTS – McCanns’ fury at police chief warning”
“Kate and Gerry McCann were furious last night after learning they are still prime suspects in daughter Madeleine’s disappearance”
It is now the 105th time Kate and Gerry have reacted with fury of been furious in a tabloid setting
“The couple’s hopes of being cleared today were crushed when police chief Paulo Rebelo asked a judge to extend their arguido status because detectives are sticking to their belief that they accidentally killed the four-year-old”
This was predictable. Robert Murat also remains a suspect
Says McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell: “They are frustrated and angry. Frustrated because, yet again, there appears to be no movement in the case when they know they are innocent. They will continue to push for their arguido status to be lifted”
The Correio da Manha newspaper “claimed Kate and Gerry, of Rothley, Leics, could be charged with perjury and wasting police time”
But don’t the police waste enough of that themselves?
“They have been warned by their legal team they may have to go to the European Court of Human Rights to get their arguido status lifted”
Human rights? What of Madeleine’s rights?
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE - McCANNS ARE MAIN SUSPECTS SAY POLICE”
“Kate and Gerry McCann were dealt a crushing blow last night when a police report accused them of killing their daughter Madeleine”
Says a friend: “They are not the prime suspects. As we understand it, the report talks about the police’s continued belief that Madeleine died accidentally in the apartment and that is why Kate and Gerry remain arguidos. It also talks about Robert Murat remaining an arguido and it discusses the possibility of her being abducted. Well, they can’t have it both ways”
No..?
Says Clarence Mitchell: “Throughout 2007 we have declined to comment on speculation in the Portuguese press. We will follow the same policy in 2008. If this report is true, however, and this interim police report exists, then we believe it contains nothing new. It is simply a restatement of the current position of the police. And we note that it not only discusses Kate and Gerry as arguidos, but also continues to name Mr Murat as an arguido. Crucially it also accepts the possibility that abduction took place”
The green shoots of hope…
THE SUN front page: “McCANN AGONY GOES ON – 246 after Maddie vanished, cops name Kate and Gerry as…PRIME SUSPECTS”
“ANGUISHED Kate and Gerry McCann are facing up to living as suspects over their daughter’s disappearance for another TWENTY years, it emerged yesterday”
Maybe…
Kate and Gerry are “both 39-year-old doctors”
Fact!
DAILY MAIL: “Police ’still think McCanns killed Madeleine by accident’ - and they will be suspects for 20 years”
“A secret police dossier has accused Kate and Gerry McCann of accidentally killing their daughter and hiding her body, it was claimed yesterday. The couple faked four-year-old Madeleine’s abduction, according to a leaked report on the eight-month police investigation”
Lawyer Edward Smethurst, who is co-ordinating the McCanns’ defence, says: “Any report about the leaked document we believe is completely without substance. We think it arises out of pure speculation on the part of the Portuguese papers”
Kate and Gerry McCann are “doctors”
THE SCOTSMAN: “Madeleine’s parents could be under suspicion for 20 years, says judge”
“The prospect of the case dragging on for years was reinforced yesterday by the president of the National Union of Portuguese Judges, Antonio Martins, who said: ‘No-one knows what type of crime was committed. If it was homicide, the investigation can only be shelved after 20 years; if it was kidnap, 15 years’”
On we go…
THE OBSERVER: “After a year in which the torment of Madeleine McCann’s family has dominated the British media, the trials of the Lees - and the hope the new image has given them - seem particularly acute”
The story: “Katrice disappeared on her second birthday from a supermarket in Germany, where her father was serving as a soldier. Her mother turned away for a few moments to fetch a pack of crisps for the girl’s party and when she looked back Katrice was gone”
Twenty six years ago…
FOX NEWS: “Missing Madeleine McCann: Irish Witness ‘Clears’ Murat”
Says Martin Smith, who was on holiday in Praia da Luz: “I told police it was definitely not him because the man wasn’t as big as Murat - I think I would have recognised him because I’d met him several times previously. He was wearing beige trousers and a darker top. We all put him in his early 40s and I didn’t think he was Portuguese”

Very little. They have made a couple of references but not of any consequence.
Did one last week…or the week before, I think.

Aardvarko made a post alluding to there being another Maria who was a lot more hostile than you and I replied and said “agreed”. I like your debates and I retract that I shouldn’t have included you with Sledgehammer and Stig.

Your thoughts on this?
from the MF/miguel5:
“I have heard that the post yesterday re the McCanns having to return to portugal is true . This has been confirmed by a friend in the pj . They dont want to leak to the press now due to pressure from the british govt . One of the tapas 7 has broken ranks and will return to portugal within the next two days in return for immunity. I dont know the details next but he says its curtains for the McCanns .Will post more when I get more info .”

I just phoned Clarence Mitchell.
The voice message says that the number is no longer in service and it gives his mobile number. I guess that’s because he can then look at the caller ID and screen calls.
The Madeleine Fund is a complete disgrace.

There is a very interesting shift in the Pro-McCanns in here. The distinction now being between Murder and other possible charges.
It seems that now it is OK to suspect the McCanns of anything except murder.
So it looks like something has ‘happened’ out there!
Even the friend close to the McCanns was talking as if they were suspects because the police think Madeleine died in the apartment, or are they saying that in the incredible window of opportunity the abductor also KILLED her and cleaned up the mess?!!!
Or maybe the McCanns and their pals were telling very big lies about the ‘regular checks’?
Something tells me that soon someone is going to be slipping out a significantly different timeline!

Do you reckon that they could have disposed of the body then? lol I’m not 100% that they disposed of the body. The time-wasting, fraud and abandonment definitely but not sure they disposed of the body. Bet they know who did though lol

Stevo I am simply stating that which has been reported from official sources and widely in the press, all suspects were interviewed separately and on different days. Because people of whatever side of the fence have differing views and I am firmly on the fence, it does not make their opinion any less valid than their opposite number. I suggest to you that the vast majority of posters described as pro are like me fence sitters, due to lack of credible evidence.

This is about as ’state of the art’ you can get but it still only has a range of 100m underfavourable conditions. It would struggle at the Tapas bar, let alone Chaplins.

Another poster here, Ade, is a regular Private Eye reader and he has often commented about the lack of comment about the McConns.

In case any one is curious…
Edison Carter (Matt Frewer) was a hard-hitting reporter for Network 23, who sometimes came close to uncovering things that his superiors in the network would have preferred to keep private. Eventually, one of these instances required him to flee his workspace, upon which he was accidentally injured; Bryce Lynch downloaded a copy of his brain into a computer, giving birth to the character Max Headroom.

Just a question… does ‘Private Eye’ (the Londoncentric satirical magazine for those non-Brits) have any stance or any comment on the McConn affair. I might buy a copy this evening - they are usually pretty irevent about this osrt of thing and says how it is.
(OMG - that was poor English, and it’s supposed to be my native tonggue)

Of course the McSnakes are guilty of criminal neglect and Social Services know that.
I think they won’t comment because they cannot do anyting until they are charged under Portugese law.
What I would like to know of they can be charged with child abandonment, illegal disposal of a body, wasting police time, perjury and fraud and put in jail for that while the actual murder/manslaughter case is still going on.
That would be, as Ad puts it, Great Fun!

489 Hi Brandon
Just reading the blurp at the top of the page again. Don’t understand why people keep referring to M as a 4 year old. Do you?
Maybe it makes leaving her in charge of the twins sound more responsible!!
January 4th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
Hi Cheryl: Did you get me mixed up with somebody else in recent post that you replied to. I admit that I am not pro-McC but I couldn’t work out your reference. However we don’t need evidence and proof in cyber-space. Unlike a court of law we can use our gut instincts - similar to Morse or Miss Marple. I am sure that the police are onto something as of Christmas week.

We dont know if that happened or not, we only have newspaper reports as you say. Or are you now saying other surces do exist so I theorising isnt quite so wide of the mark?

Re: Noseycow’s “Could I lose my job over this?”
Firstly, no-one knows who noseycow actually is.
Secondly, Noseycow is under no obligation to keep silent over any rumours she hears. Unless she reveals information, eg about patients, that would be considered as being in breach of patient confidentiality, or about staff whose private details she is privy to as an express part of her official employment capacity, then I doubt very much that there is anything that her employers could do. After all, she has only repeated commonly heard rumours, and she has not said they were definitely true. How could someone lose their job by gossiping about something that hundreds/thousands of others are also gossiping about?

I take your point and I’ve said in previous posts, I’m not disrespecting you. I’m just fed up of people who on the one hand say we know nothing but yet your comment about the interviews implies you know something we don’t. How do you know the police didn’t do the interviews like you described? Just using logic, you seem to defeat your own arguments.
January 4th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
What is you opinion?
Kate seems to look more haggard and sick in her latest photos. Do you think this is a late reaction to the crime on May 3, or to being named Arguido? Or is it being faked for any reason?
I am one of the people who were offended that she was soaking up the sun in her white bikini, jogging and posing for photos, and obviously spending much time in front of a mirror every day, when her child was either tradgically dead or being tortured somewhere. It seemed disrespectful to her daughter and I didn’t buy the excuse that “that’s the way some people handle it.” BS!
also,
What is your opinion?
Do the PJ have anything to gain from reinterviewing? Would the PJ be in a stronger position to use original sworn statements, against any changes the Tapas put forward in court? Do you think that the PJ will have a stronger case if they document changes in statements before hand?
Do you think they are setting a trap with the reinterviewing process, or heading down a slippery slope since the Tapas have pre-prepared themselves with their lawyers?
January 4th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
483 Daisy…whose statement are you agreeing with?
