Madeleine McCann: 20 Years Of Fury, Kate And Gerry McCann Prime Suspects, Robert Murat Says Nothing
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY MIRROR front page: “YOU’RE STILL PRIME SUSPECTS – McCanns’ fury at police chief warning”
“Kate and Gerry McCann were furious last night after learning they are still prime suspects in daughter Madeleine’s disappearance”
It is now the 105th time Kate and Gerry have reacted with fury of been furious in a tabloid setting
“The couple’s hopes of being cleared today were crushed when police chief Paulo Rebelo asked a judge to extend their arguido status because detectives are sticking to their belief that they accidentally killed the four-year-old”
This was predictable. Robert Murat also remains a suspect
Says McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell: “They are frustrated and angry. Frustrated because, yet again, there appears to be no movement in the case when they know they are innocent. They will continue to push for their arguido status to be lifted”
The Correio da Manha newspaper “claimed Kate and Gerry, of Rothley, Leics, could be charged with perjury and wasting police time”
But don’t the police waste enough of that themselves?
“They have been warned by their legal team they may have to go to the European Court of Human Rights to get their arguido status lifted”
Human rights? What of Madeleine’s rights?
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE - McCANNS ARE MAIN SUSPECTS SAY POLICE”
“Kate and Gerry McCann were dealt a crushing blow last night when a police report accused them of killing their daughter Madeleine”
Says a friend: “They are not the prime suspects. As we understand it, the report talks about the police’s continued belief that Madeleine died accidentally in the apartment and that is why Kate and Gerry remain arguidos. It also talks about Robert Murat remaining an arguido and it discusses the possibility of her being abducted. Well, they can’t have it both ways”
No..?
Says Clarence Mitchell: “Throughout 2007 we have declined to comment on speculation in the Portuguese press. We will follow the same policy in 2008. If this report is true, however, and this interim police report exists, then we believe it contains nothing new. It is simply a restatement of the current position of the police. And we note that it not only discusses Kate and Gerry as arguidos, but also continues to name Mr Murat as an arguido. Crucially it also accepts the possibility that abduction took place”
The green shoots of hope…
THE SUN front page: “McCANN AGONY GOES ON – 246 after Maddie vanished, cops name Kate and Gerry as…PRIME SUSPECTS”
“ANGUISHED Kate and Gerry McCann are facing up to living as suspects over their daughter’s disappearance for another TWENTY years, it emerged yesterday”
Maybe…
Kate and Gerry are “both 39-year-old doctors”
Fact!
DAILY MAIL: “Police ’still think McCanns killed Madeleine by accident’ - and they will be suspects for 20 years”
“A secret police dossier has accused Kate and Gerry McCann of accidentally killing their daughter and hiding her body, it was claimed yesterday. The couple faked four-year-old Madeleine’s abduction, according to a leaked report on the eight-month police investigation”
Lawyer Edward Smethurst, who is co-ordinating the McCanns’ defence, says: “Any report about the leaked document we believe is completely without substance. We think it arises out of pure speculation on the part of the Portuguese papers”
Kate and Gerry McCann are “doctors”
THE SCOTSMAN: “Madeleine’s parents could be under suspicion for 20 years, says judge”
“The prospect of the case dragging on for years was reinforced yesterday by the president of the National Union of Portuguese Judges, Antonio Martins, who said: ‘No-one knows what type of crime was committed. If it was homicide, the investigation can only be shelved after 20 years; if it was kidnap, 15 years’”
On we go…
THE OBSERVER: “After a year in which the torment of Madeleine McCann’s family has dominated the British media, the trials of the Lees - and the hope the new image has given them - seem particularly acute”
The story: “Katrice disappeared on her second birthday from a supermarket in Germany, where her father was serving as a soldier. Her mother turned away for a few moments to fetch a pack of crisps for the girl’s party and when she looked back Katrice was gone”
Twenty six years ago…
FOX NEWS: “Missing Madeleine McCann: Irish Witness ‘Clears’ Murat”
Says Martin Smith, who was on holiday in Praia da Luz: “I told police it was definitely not him because the man wasn’t as big as Murat - I think I would have recognised him because I’d met him several times previously. He was wearing beige trousers and a darker top. We all put him in his early 40s and I didn’t think he was Portuguese”

That is true, Steve, and that depends on what state, the recording is done in. Otherwise, doesn’t one have to announce to the other person they are recording the conversation? Oh well, carry on with your investigations but I think it won’t be for a very long time until the truth is known - if ever!

Stevo - not Ashington ,my place has a castle and a lovely meandering river. How was Norway? Please could you do a picture of OBrien next to Mitchell ?

Do you think that people would actually boycott Branson or not buy Rowling?
***************************
Somebody earlier said they would boycott Virgin. You’re right that the benefactors themselves will be mightily pissed off. Nobody likes to taken for a fool. As to ulterior motives, who knows? I would like to think not but these days everyone is so shallow. Initially, everyone must have felt their heartstrings pulled by this little girl but there are surely people looking to benefit from this tragedy.

EDIT: “Your writing is very interesting to me. Especially this part you wrote, that is so idiosyncratic and peculiar: “Your education is reflected in your prose. Sadly, you have somehow got the contentions in the post you are criticising twisted round your neck.”
“Twisted round your neck…” My neck? MY NECK? Perhaps that is exactly what happened to Madeleine McCann. It’s a really odd choice of words. You remember her–the helpless 3-year-old child of university-educated people like yourself. END
***********************************************
Your post speaks volumes about you. You really are a sad case. You should see a psychiatrist.

Quite sorry, luv, trying to work and read Anorak and contribute all at the same time.
I confused you with Judith C, the university-educated person, who did indeed threaten to strangle me. It was pretty vivid writing, so full of venom and hate that I have to ask whether she was in Portugal or Spain on the day/s in question.
Or perhaps she just has fond memories of the local Beltane festival.
But you do sometimes remind me of her, so I just got confused. I am sincerely sorry to have done so, and hope you will accept my apology.

Have you ever attended a Beltane festival - they have one in London every May -the Beltane Bash - no fleshly sacrifices. You are confusing with the Wicker man from Pagan days long ago. They used to have human sacrifice in London too, at Tyburn, but they were Christian

What absolute prattle you write. People caring more about money than about what happened to a child who is likely dead? I don’t think so. But, but, buttttttttt oh, oh, no! No! oh please, no, mommy, daddy, hhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeelllllpppp! Donnnnnnn’t STRANGLE ME! Don’t strangle me……please!!!!!!! I was just….just typing….something….to a university-educated person………..Help! Please let go! Please stop! Oh, it hurts…….!!
Oh, ah. yes, that is much better. Thank you so much for not strangling me.
Now, as I was saying, about the sacrifices of Beltane on or about May 1–a long, Scottish tradition I might add, it’s fair to say that people care about not getting murdered, or accidentally killed, and they do also care about not getting lied to and ripped off. It’s not quite fair of you to make the judgments that they care more than one than the other in THIS case.
If there’s no body (i.e. the little piggies’ acid bath), then there will likely be no prosecution for murder/homoicide. But if the McCanns are found to have lied, then there can be a prosecution for perjury, and a prosecution for fraud, and so the prosecuting state will take what it can get.
for now.

I contributed to the fund so I’m a customer. As a customer of a company I’m entitled to call the directors and ask whatever questions I like. And if that company fails to deliver I can tell them I’m not happy with it either. I suggest others do the same. Contribute $1 and it entitles you to talk to the company and express your disgust.

Hello Patch! Nice to read you. Do you think that people would actually boycott Branson or not buy Rowling? People have short memories, so maybe some would, for a while. But the benefactors themselves won’t like being linked to people who turned out to have been fooling them all along. But this is assuming there was no ulterior motive for the benefactors’ generosity. We don’t know what lies beneath the surface. Let’s hope we find out — because we’re nosy!

And I thought you were in the USA as well. If you are then you’ll be perfectly well aware of Michael Moore. Since when did he get permission to walk on the streets and talk to people as part of his documentaries? I can’t believe you’re even questioning someone for calling a childcare authority. What do you think public bodies exist for? Martians?

I think you are on the right track - go right back to the beginning (and there is some very interesting stuff from the McCann camp through May and June which has later been ’streamlined’) and there are many ‘variables’ which still need to be clarified.

771 Cheryl asked: “I’m curious, Tony B., what if Mitchell is a Catholic - is that a crime in the UK that he could stand trial for?”
REPLY: No, of course not, but there is usually a shuffling of bottoms by Roman Catholics in the congregation when the new monarch of the United Kingdom is crowned and we get to this bit:
The Archbishop of Canterbury: “Will you to the utmost of your power maintain the Laws of God and the true profession of the Gospel? Will you to the utmost of your power maintain in the United Kingdom the Protestant Reformed Religion established by law? Will you maintain and preserve inviolable the settlement of the Church of England, and the doctrine, worship, discipline, and government thereof, as by law established in England? And will you preserve unto the Bishops and Clergy of England, and to the Churches there committed to their charge, all such rights and privileges, as by law do or shall appertain to them or any of them?”
The Queen: “All this I promise to do. The things which I have here before promised, I will perform, and keep. So help me God.”
The last time this was said was on 2 June 1953, the same morning that Sir Edmund Hillary became the first person to climb Mount Everest, along with the Sherpa, Tenzing.
Great day! I got a china Coronation mug and a silver spoon from my primary school headmistress to take home to my Mum and Dad.

If Team McCann encourages the public to call them, as they so often do, they have to imagine that they will receive an occasional call from a sincere Anoraker who just wants to solve the case! I mean, didn’t the late Princess Diana make thousands and thousands of nuisance calls? And what did Scotland Yard do to her?
nada. I think Stevo’s entitle to one or two direct dials, don’t you?

Taping a phone conversation is legal everywhere to my knowledge. Since when was having a recording something illegal?
In the USA, I have a case right now where recorded evidence is part of the evidence. Fortunately in the state of jurisdiction, single-party consent is legal. That means as long as one person gave consent then the recording is legal for purposes of evidence.
Cheryl you really are stupid. Who says a recording (mine or otherwise) is for “evidence purposes”. Anyone is entitled to hit the record button on their recorder and record ambient noise within their own home. How stupid is that to think otherwise?

I was not wasting time! I wanted to know if I could leave my 3yr old and two 18 mths kids alone whilst I went out on the piss to swinging parties in Portugal. I wanted reassurance that I would not be imprisoned for my actions! The McCs can do it, so why not me?
I asked for a list of their guide-lines - as a concerned member of the public - and they would not send me any.
___________________
REPLY: Coco, who was a half-wit? Don’t insult my intelligence on why you made that call. Frankly, I don’t give a tinker’s damn if there are laws for them to take action against such calls and you got found out. What my concern about such a questionable intelligent action on your part was you said it on here, an open forum on the internet. Now, since your questionable intelligent action someone is offering Clarence Mitchell’s cellphone number and someone is talking about having a copy of a conversation they had on the telephone with someone whose name I will not say. Is taping a telephone conversation legal in the UK?
Are these intelligent actions by supposedly intelligent reasoning beings on here? Then to state on here for everyone to read or pass on to others or onto other forums on other sites … for example…’did you hear what the people on the Anorak site are doing ….’ That is just what this site needs!

The telephone recording would not be made in the UK, but is it were so long as you state it will be - its legal. Half my phone calls are recorded anyway on the answering machine, and even it happens with my neighbour who works for the police.
