Madeleine McCann: Gerry McCann Talks With Vanity Fair
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY MIRROR front page: “MADELEINE: THE BIG INTERVIEW”
“Our regret”
“GERRY: I wish we have never gone to the tapas bar”
“KATE: I wish I’d seen the stranger watching us”
“READ THEIR HEARTBREAKING WORDS INSIDE”
Voyeurs, campaigners, police and handwringers come see the pain, the suffering the agony. Prepare to be heartbroken!
“Riddled with guilt, the distraught” Gerry will tell all to the Mirror. Well, not to the Mirror, rather to Vanity Fair magazine. Journalist Judy Bachrach spoke with Gerry in October near the family home in Rothley, Leicestershire
And the interview is not with Gerry and Kate. Only Gerry McCann was interviewed, says the Mail. Kate McCann’s words come via friends and family
Pages 4 and 5: “I WISH”.
It reads very much like a prayer, or a camping speech by Barack Obama. Says Gerry McCann:
“I wish I hadn’t gone to the tapas bar.
“I wish I’d have stayed in the apartment that night
“I wish I’d stayed in the room when I checked on her five minutes longer”
A wish…
Says Gerry McCann: “”At the time we did it, it was not irresponsible. Of course we feel guilty about not having been there and that is just something we have to deal with for the rest of our lives. You are not asking anything we don’t think about on a daily basis. We live this 24 hours a day”
Gerry says his world went “all black, with maybe tiny points of light” in the days after Madeleine vanished. “We can’t cry our eyes out every day because that’s not helping. So after three days I picked myself up…quicker than Kate could. Grief washes over you. It’s like a big wave, mostly I was able to beat it back”
And the Madeleine ‘Look into my eyes’ campaign? Says Gerry: “We thought it was possible this could hurt her. Her abductor might do something to her eye. But in marketing terms it was a good ploy”
THE SUN: “Life’s bleak but I cling to hope”
Says Gerry McCann: “People can support you in your darkest hours and in our case the darkest hour was of course when Madeleine went missing. Now it is just bleak”
In next month’s Vanity Fair: “The interview with Gerry came as it emerged GORDON BROWN has snubbed the McCanns’ request for a meeting; furious Kate EXPLODED when cops first told her she was a suspect; and family spokesman Clarence Mitchell has given a university SPEECH on the topic Missing Maddie McCann — the perfect PR campaign
“A pal of the McCanns said Kate, 39, believes the family were STALKED by Maddie’s kidnapper in the days before she went missing”. WOW
COUPLE hit back on film. Says Clarence Mitchell, the spokesperson: “It is not us being greedy. It is us being needy“
DAILY MAIL: “It’s all my fault, admits Maddie’s father”
Well, not quite. Gerry McCann is making no confession. He maintains that the fault lies with a kidnapper. Says the Mail: “Gerry McCann is tortured by guilt that Madeleine’s disappearance is his fault”
Will he tell all? Mr McCann tells Vanity Fair’s Judy Bachrach: “I can’t talk to you about the details of what happened. I live under threat from the Portuguese - if I do talk - of two years’ imprisonment”
“THIRD POLICE SUSPECT BREAKS HIS SILENCE” – Says Robert Murat to Vanity Fair: “All I can say is that I am innocent”
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE - MOTHER IS SHUNNED BY PRIEST”
Page 9: “KATE’S SCREAMS AS POLICE TOLD HER: YOU’RE A SUSPECT – KATE McCann screamed when told by police that she was a suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance, it emerged yesterday. Opening the door of her rented villa to a Portuguese officer the family had come to know, Kate, 39, shouted: ‘Do you honestly believe that I would murder my own child?’”
Gerry McCann is a “39-year-old cardiologist”. Facts!
On the speculation: “Gerry says bitterly: ‘Yes, yes, I know. Kate killed her in a frenzy, Madeleine was sedated by us, she fell down the stairs – in which case you would have thought they’d have found her body. I’ve heard all of that. There are a huge number of theories in the media. But what I want to know is, who told them all that?’”
DAILY STAR: “Anguished and painfully thin, his wife Kate was too upset to answer even a single question during the interview with glossy US magazine Vanity Fair. Gerry revealed in the 7,500-word magazine article he had to be coaxed by a counsellor into talking publicly about his daughter in the days after she disappeared”
DAILY RECORD: “Maddie’s Dad: Slim Chance Of Getting Her Back”
“Distraught Gerry McCann has admitted the chances of him seeing his missing daughter Madeleine again are ‘slim’”
VANITY FAIR: “Unanswered Prayers”
“After three-year-old Madeleine McCann disappeared on a family vacation in Portugal, her parents pursued a high-stakes strategy: media saturation. It succeeded beyond their wildest imaginings—winning the aid of everyone from J. K. Rowling to the Pope—and failed miserably. Getting the first in-depth interview with Gerry McCann since he and his wife, Kate, were declared suspects, the author re-traces their footsteps to their daughter’s empty bed”
And then a policeman appeared. His name Ricardo. “Because for months they used to have regular weekly meetings with the Portuguese police, and then they stopped,” recalls Gerry’s older sister Trish Cameron
“Do you have something to tell us?” Ricardo asked.
“No,” Kate replied. “Do you have something to tell us?”
“He nodded. “Yes. You are being made arguidos”…
Eight months of talking - read it all…

re: Vanity Fair and the docu/drama story ‘breaking’ yesterday…. I would guess it broke yesterday because the journos were all pointed to read it in Vanity Fair, jumped on it, and put it forward as news (despite it being old news as the original interview was months ago).
Yes, the news should have been the stepping-down of the Directors but as I’ve said Clarence is very good!
Esther mcVey will be fielding jounos as we speak…… I doubt she will talk about it until there is an imminent by-election or somesuch. The other one doesn’t need publicity so probably won’t speak. IMO of course.
Without getting into anything too deep, I keep reading about the cleaning of the apartment; way way back a big complaint from the PJ was that Mark Warner had allowed the apartment to be cleaned (by their cleaners) and forensic evidence was having to be collected from the cleaners hoover bags etc.
Fact? dunno.
I’m with Karen…. Catholics tend to avoid confessionals and Priests if they’ve been really bad. ‘A’ level guilt is an enduring qualification as Billy Connolly often says!

And which body of evidence suggesting that the McCanns (or any other British subject) have murdered Madeleine would be used by the British authorities to charge them with such crime under s9 Offences Against The Person Act 1861?
I’m willing to be convinced otherwise, but these charges in the UK are more likely to occur once a court in another jurisdiction (where the crime was committed) has already found them guilty of murder.
It’s not even clear that we have enough evidence to charge them with involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance, let alone charging them with MURDER.

According to a McVey statement…M3 were not being paid out of
the Fund.
B Kennedy was footing that bill.
No retraction regarding that statement has been made by McVey
as far as I can see….yet the Press now state that M3 fees are paid
from the Fund.
Query though….Was the full amount paid upon the taking up of
the 6 month Contract by M3….or is it being paid monthly ?

I understand annual payments and would suggest that any payments made to the McCs are capital payments (possibly paid in installments) and therefore not considered annual payments.

Christ, this board is busy again today. This thing is just not lying down is it?

I have to admit, the press are playing Clarences game arent they! Although I think he is crap at his job (hence he had been in the career backwater) as usual its not what, but who, you know!
Its very big news that two of the directors have stepped down, I’d dearly love to hear why the Lawyer has gone - Esther was obvious - wants to be a tory MP, knows cannot be tainted.
Jon Corner is most interesting to me - and has been all along. He definately see’s the career possibilities in all this - and stage managed those early video’s (remember the ‘normal family, kids toys all around’ - why did he mention that?).
Film maker - I wonder how we can find out what films he made before?

Thing is ‘the fund’ isn’t as transparent as they claimed they would be.
The payments on the mortgage may have been paid to G & K as a loan (unlikely) but we don’t know. The payments may have been made to the McCanns ‘gross’ with the tax responsibility resting with them. Remember G & K are not employed by ‘the fund’ but have (probably) been paid gifted donations.
Corporation tax would obviously be due on any profit, however the way it’s going they might attempt to show a loss lol

I say again, annual payments.

So the fund and the benefactor coming together huh! Interesting, so the money can get a bit mixed up now.
I thought the fund was used to search for Madeleine, yet the fund was not used to pay for M3 and it was the JW double glazing salesman, or was it?
I’m confused - deliberately being made to feel confused? Is this the ploy? Confuse to deceive?

I respect your thinking about not being accidental (due to the alleged dispersion of the blood traces). And frankly in this case we don’t really know what’s true or false.
But the police are the only ones who had access to the blood traces and they seem convinced it was accidental. And with accidental it is meant that they did not intend to cause death to the child. So this could include a fall from the sofa or eg taking any action that would lead the Madeleine’s death without her death being intended result.
Note also that any suspicious of non-accidental death (call it infanticide) would merit preventive arrest by the portuguese authorities when they were made suspects. This has not happened (and you could argue that at the time they did not have the evidence of the blood confirmed).
Even in the unlikely event that yes all those specks of blood in the apartment in the apartment are 100% sure to come from Madeleine, and it was proved beyond doubt that Madeleine died in that apartment, the courts would still have to assess if the McCanns did it or someone else did it. And secondly if the McCanns knew or not.
As you will imagine for the prosecution to grasp all these things without having access to the body can be a difficult and lenghty process.

Me too! But its how things get uncovered and the toads who seek to hide and benefit are exposed, of course there is always a risk.
So John Gaunt is a plant then by the sounds of it!

Smethurst is in-house lawyer for window guy Brian Kennedy

Nicking this all off the MF by the way. Thomlinson was the lawyer that Ed smethurst replaced.
Is Brian Kennedy worrying about the find madeleine fund running out.
Is he worried about money being spent unwisely
Is he worried trying to get his metodo3 money back.
etc. etc.
And what relation does Thomlinson have with the McCann’s and any of their benefactors.
dun dun dun - cup of tea.

Where was Dr K during this extended interview ?
In which room did Dr G P and CM have her tied up and gagged ?
Has Dr K and her lack of ability to string a proper scentence together
caused her to be silenced in case she makes any more clangers ?

I have a personal motto, always pursue that which you are told cannot be pursued.
Most of my life people have told me that ‘there isnt any point doing that, it will never work’ and similar statements.
Usually they had a personal agenda not visible to me at the time and just didnt want me poking around!
++++++++++++++++
Indeed… Another useful question to always ask yourself others is variations on….
“Now, why would they say that?” “Who benefits most if I go along with what they are suggesting?”
Mind you, asking that question(s) has gotten me into trouble once or twice!
January 10th, 2008 at 11:23 am
“But in marketing terms it was a good ploy.”
For recovering his wits and his acquisitive instinct so quickly; for trademarking his daughter fifteen days after her disappearnce; for having his “vision”, to set up his funds and accumulate millions during the long, hot hazy Summer of ‘07, Gerry McCann is nominated for the Institute of Marketing’s Award:
MARKETING MAN OF THE YEAR, 2007.

I thought it had all been cleared up yesterday.
“Jurisdiction
The current rule of criminal jurisdiction is that a British subject may be charged with murder wherever the killing took place and no matter what the nationality of the victim (see s9 Offences Against The Person Act 1861).”

Thankyou, absolutely correct.
I read it as if for some reason the Portuguese do not wish to hold a trial then the uk courts can do so. However Portugal has first option.

And you would be hard pushed to prove otherwise. That is the problem with going after the fund.

I don’t disagree, and in any case you wouldn’t know the scope of any impropriety around the Limited Company known colloquially as “The Fund” until the outcome of criminal proceedings relating to Madeleine’s disappearance. Would still love to know the real reasons why two directors have resigned though!

231 - Salomen. It’s the big question that no-one has ever asked on TV or in the media: “Can you confirm or deny that you ate at Chaplins on the 2nd May and left the kids alone in the flat?”
Why would they not answer? It’s (in the abduction theory) not related to the night of the 3rd, so is not covered by secrecy law. If they did not eat there, they can deny it right away and move on. So why has it never been asked?
