Madeleine McCann: Gerry McCann Talks With Vanity Fair
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY MIRROR front page: “MADELEINE: THE BIG INTERVIEW”
“Our regret”
“GERRY: I wish we have never gone to the tapas bar”
“KATE: I wish I’d seen the stranger watching us”
“READ THEIR HEARTBREAKING WORDS INSIDE”
Voyeurs, campaigners, police and handwringers come see the pain, the suffering the agony. Prepare to be heartbroken!
“Riddled with guilt, the distraught” Gerry will tell all to the Mirror. Well, not to the Mirror, rather to Vanity Fair magazine. Journalist Judy Bachrach spoke with Gerry in October near the family home in Rothley, Leicestershire
And the interview is not with Gerry and Kate. Only Gerry McCann was interviewed, says the Mail. Kate McCann’s words come via friends and family
Pages 4 and 5: “I WISH”.
It reads very much like a prayer, or a camping speech by Barack Obama. Says Gerry McCann:
“I wish I hadn’t gone to the tapas bar.
“I wish I’d have stayed in the apartment that night
“I wish I’d stayed in the room when I checked on her five minutes longer”
A wish…
Says Gerry McCann: “”At the time we did it, it was not irresponsible. Of course we feel guilty about not having been there and that is just something we have to deal with for the rest of our lives. You are not asking anything we don’t think about on a daily basis. We live this 24 hours a day”
Gerry says his world went “all black, with maybe tiny points of light” in the days after Madeleine vanished. “We can’t cry our eyes out every day because that’s not helping. So after three days I picked myself up…quicker than Kate could. Grief washes over you. It’s like a big wave, mostly I was able to beat it back”
And the Madeleine ‘Look into my eyes’ campaign? Says Gerry: “We thought it was possible this could hurt her. Her abductor might do something to her eye. But in marketing terms it was a good ploy”
THE SUN: “Life’s bleak but I cling to hope”
Says Gerry McCann: “People can support you in your darkest hours and in our case the darkest hour was of course when Madeleine went missing. Now it is just bleak”
In next month’s Vanity Fair: “The interview with Gerry came as it emerged GORDON BROWN has snubbed the McCanns’ request for a meeting; furious Kate EXPLODED when cops first told her she was a suspect; and family spokesman Clarence Mitchell has given a university SPEECH on the topic Missing Maddie McCann — the perfect PR campaign
“A pal of the McCanns said Kate, 39, believes the family were STALKED by Maddie’s kidnapper in the days before she went missing”. WOW
COUPLE hit back on film. Says Clarence Mitchell, the spokesperson: “It is not us being greedy. It is us being needy“
DAILY MAIL: “It’s all my fault, admits Maddie’s father”
Well, not quite. Gerry McCann is making no confession. He maintains that the fault lies with a kidnapper. Says the Mail: “Gerry McCann is tortured by guilt that Madeleine’s disappearance is his fault”
Will he tell all? Mr McCann tells Vanity Fair’s Judy Bachrach: “I can’t talk to you about the details of what happened. I live under threat from the Portuguese - if I do talk - of two years’ imprisonment”
“THIRD POLICE SUSPECT BREAKS HIS SILENCE” – Says Robert Murat to Vanity Fair: “All I can say is that I am innocent”
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE - MOTHER IS SHUNNED BY PRIEST”
Page 9: “KATE’S SCREAMS AS POLICE TOLD HER: YOU’RE A SUSPECT – KATE McCann screamed when told by police that she was a suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance, it emerged yesterday. Opening the door of her rented villa to a Portuguese officer the family had come to know, Kate, 39, shouted: ‘Do you honestly believe that I would murder my own child?’”
Gerry McCann is a “39-year-old cardiologist”. Facts!
On the speculation: “Gerry says bitterly: ‘Yes, yes, I know. Kate killed her in a frenzy, Madeleine was sedated by us, she fell down the stairs – in which case you would have thought they’d have found her body. I’ve heard all of that. There are a huge number of theories in the media. But what I want to know is, who told them all that?’”
DAILY STAR: “Anguished and painfully thin, his wife Kate was too upset to answer even a single question during the interview with glossy US magazine Vanity Fair. Gerry revealed in the 7,500-word magazine article he had to be coaxed by a counsellor into talking publicly about his daughter in the days after she disappeared”
DAILY RECORD: “Maddie’s Dad: Slim Chance Of Getting Her Back”
“Distraught Gerry McCann has admitted the chances of him seeing his missing daughter Madeleine again are ‘slim’”
VANITY FAIR: “Unanswered Prayers”
“After three-year-old Madeleine McCann disappeared on a family vacation in Portugal, her parents pursued a high-stakes strategy: media saturation. It succeeded beyond their wildest imaginings—winning the aid of everyone from J. K. Rowling to the Pope—and failed miserably. Getting the first in-depth interview with Gerry McCann since he and his wife, Kate, were declared suspects, the author re-traces their footsteps to their daughter’s empty bed”
And then a policeman appeared. His name Ricardo. “Because for months they used to have regular weekly meetings with the Portuguese police, and then they stopped,” recalls Gerry’s older sister Trish Cameron
“Do you have something to tell us?” Ricardo asked.
“No,” Kate replied. “Do you have something to tell us?”
“He nodded. “Yes. You are being made arguidos”…
Eight months of talking - read it all…

The idea if the film is at least immoral.
Make money using their dead child.
A little part of the money will go to the fund. The rest to a Swiss bank, if the investiment will come from the US.
Why people of the UK don’t organise a legal silent protest march in front of their home?
Asking for the truth.
There must be a way to do it.

Gee, I wonder what Garth’s opinions will be?
Garth : The McCanns are great.
So unpredictable.

You made me smile!
We survived our parents drinking and driving and being left to play in the pub car park with lemonade and crisps (with salt in blue paper!). Sometimes we even sneaked off to nearby railways lines and put pennies on the tracks.
How did we ever survive?!?

Is it a coincidence that the planning officer for Rothley is a Sarah McCann? Maybe the clan are taking over every spectrum from medicine to local government

Well
Could the new directorships of the MF decide that the money - if they can raise it - can now be used for G & K and tapas defence? There was no legal barrier, just a “moral” decision not to use it. Now Mckvey’s gone.
++++++++++++++++
Extract:
With the sudden dramatic and unexpected turn of events at the weekend the directors had to consider whether legal defence costs could be paid for by the Fund.
The Board has taken advice from Bates Wells & Braithwaite London LLP and Christopher McCall QC. The Board has been advised that payment of Gerry and Kate’s legal defence costs would be legally permissible subject to conditions about repayment in the event of a guilty conviction.
The directors of the Fund discussed this today. The two family directors, Brian Kennedy and John McCann withdrew from the meeting when the decision was made. Esther Mcvey chaired the meeting.
The Fund directors realise that there is not only a legal answer and recognise the spirit which underlies the generous donations to Madeleine’s Fund, which it is the directors’ responsibility to steer.
For this reason the Fund directors have decided not to pay for Gerry and Kate’s legal defence costs. We stress that Gerry and Kate have not asked for these costs to be paid. However, people have already called in offering their financial support. Any such fund to pay legal defence costs would have to be separately set up and administered.
At the heart of this campaign and Fund is a little girl confused, lonely and in need of her parents. This Fund’s money will be focused on finding that little girl and leaving no stone unturned.

Interesting that disagreeing with the McCanns actions and saying their neglect led to this horrible situation is decribed as being “harsh”.
__________________________________________________________________
In the same vein, a recent news article described suspicion (by a proportion of the British public) of the McCanns as “deeply hurtful suspicion”. So it is “harsh” to say that leaving infants alone is dangerous and ” deeply hurtful” to suspect official suspects. Will these criteria apply to future criminal investigations one wonders?

“I agree. A person who has a car accident might say “I wish I hadn’t decided to use the car on that day”. It doesn’t mean that he thinks there’s any real reason for not doing it - simply that, if he hadn’t, he wouldn’t have had the accident.”
You’ve got it. We are all taking small risks every day. If something improbable but fatal happens we wouldn’t say that we are guilty of using the car, the train, the plane etc.

Gerry’s “regret” at having left Madeleine alone… it’s the kind of word used for declining a wedding invitation. But I suppose “sorrow” is not in his vocabulary - too close to “sorry”.

In fairness Ian, I’m gonna give you a bit of credit. At least you are prepared to look at other possibilities, even if you think there is very little chance of it happening in any other way than a cover up.
You wrote
If you recall, I accepted that the ‘man under the bed’ was a possibility, but the blood sinks it like the iceberg sank that big old ship. Also the 5 minutes remains 5 minutes, but the abductor has a little more of that ime as he wouldnt need to gain access, though the open door made that easy anyway!)
Incidentally, how long do you think that a potential abductor would need to open the said window and shutters and get out of the apartment? Bearing in mind of course, all he would have done is check Gerry was gone and then made out.
As for the blood? Weve still yet to see proof of this. And to add, if you remember in the panarama programe the forensic guy said that it bares no relevance whatsover. There are very many reasons as to how it got threre. And another thing to add……..do you honestly believe they took out a tile and discovered more blood below?

If you thought you were facing nth years in jail, would you care how moral you looked? Or would you want the best defence. They didn’t worry about getting an extradition lawyer for pinochet to represent them while they were saying they were prepared to go back to portugal.

I think I am going to win the prize for most ludicrous theory so far this year.
By the way Ade how is 17 cells coming along?
The theory is:
The night that Madeleine is found to be missing, Kate is genuinely distraught.
Absolutely.
Paulo Reiss, of Gazetta Digital fame, wrote then, that there was no way she was guilty, having been in the room and seeing the sheer rage in her eyes.
He was convinced.
Everything since then has unconvinced him.
Imagine if after that night, Gerry with his medical knowledge of drugs, begins to sedate Kate. Some wonderful combination that leaves her without a care in the world.
Her face is unfurrowed.
Her eyes and bright and shining.
She is even getting on beautiful clothing and jewelery.
She is truly a Stepford wive.
Holding his hand. Looking adoringly on to her husband, she grieved for three whole days.
Being left alone whilst he whored his ego in the States.
Looking out to sea, clutching the cat.
Perhaps before a show, her medication would change somewhat, which would make her stumble and look like the one not telling the truth.
And for the “teenie window of opportunity and clunk”
she could have got something completely different.
I am not feeling sorry for her but it has suddenly on me that Kate is being set up for the fall, and this could have been planned as an eventually many months ago. I will not be satisfied with her being punished and not him Gerry and O’Brien. And I think that is what is been spun so they are off. Fuck the McCanns -
I had better go and take my medication, none of this has any merit, just ramblings of a mad woman stuck too long in the African sun.
