Madeleine McCann: Gerry McCann Talks With Vanity Fair
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY MIRROR front page: “MADELEINE: THE BIG INTERVIEW”
“Our regret”
“GERRY: I wish we have never gone to the tapas bar”
“KATE: I wish I’d seen the stranger watching us”
“READ THEIR HEARTBREAKING WORDS INSIDE”
Voyeurs, campaigners, police and handwringers come see the pain, the suffering the agony. Prepare to be heartbroken!
“Riddled with guilt, the distraught” Gerry will tell all to the Mirror. Well, not to the Mirror, rather to Vanity Fair magazine. Journalist Judy Bachrach spoke with Gerry in October near the family home in Rothley, Leicestershire
And the interview is not with Gerry and Kate. Only Gerry McCann was interviewed, says the Mail. Kate McCann’s words come via friends and family
Pages 4 and 5: “I WISH”.
It reads very much like a prayer, or a camping speech by Barack Obama. Says Gerry McCann:
“I wish I hadn’t gone to the tapas bar.
“I wish I’d have stayed in the apartment that night
“I wish I’d stayed in the room when I checked on her five minutes longer”
A wish…
Says Gerry McCann: “”At the time we did it, it was not irresponsible. Of course we feel guilty about not having been there and that is just something we have to deal with for the rest of our lives. You are not asking anything we don’t think about on a daily basis. We live this 24 hours a day”
Gerry says his world went “all black, with maybe tiny points of light” in the days after Madeleine vanished. “We can’t cry our eyes out every day because that’s not helping. So after three days I picked myself up…quicker than Kate could. Grief washes over you. It’s like a big wave, mostly I was able to beat it back”
And the Madeleine ‘Look into my eyes’ campaign? Says Gerry: “We thought it was possible this could hurt her. Her abductor might do something to her eye. But in marketing terms it was a good ploy”
THE SUN: “Life’s bleak but I cling to hope”
Says Gerry McCann: “People can support you in your darkest hours and in our case the darkest hour was of course when Madeleine went missing. Now it is just bleak”
In next month’s Vanity Fair: “The interview with Gerry came as it emerged GORDON BROWN has snubbed the McCanns’ request for a meeting; furious Kate EXPLODED when cops first told her she was a suspect; and family spokesman Clarence Mitchell has given a university SPEECH on the topic Missing Maddie McCann — the perfect PR campaign
“A pal of the McCanns said Kate, 39, believes the family were STALKED by Maddie’s kidnapper in the days before she went missing”. WOW
COUPLE hit back on film. Says Clarence Mitchell, the spokesperson: “It is not us being greedy. It is us being needy“
DAILY MAIL: “It’s all my fault, admits Maddie’s father”
Well, not quite. Gerry McCann is making no confession. He maintains that the fault lies with a kidnapper. Says the Mail: “Gerry McCann is tortured by guilt that Madeleine’s disappearance is his fault”
Will he tell all? Mr McCann tells Vanity Fair’s Judy Bachrach: “I can’t talk to you about the details of what happened. I live under threat from the Portuguese - if I do talk - of two years’ imprisonment”
“THIRD POLICE SUSPECT BREAKS HIS SILENCE” – Says Robert Murat to Vanity Fair: “All I can say is that I am innocent”
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE - MOTHER IS SHUNNED BY PRIEST”
Page 9: “KATE’S SCREAMS AS POLICE TOLD HER: YOU’RE A SUSPECT – KATE McCann screamed when told by police that she was a suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance, it emerged yesterday. Opening the door of her rented villa to a Portuguese officer the family had come to know, Kate, 39, shouted: ‘Do you honestly believe that I would murder my own child?’”
Gerry McCann is a “39-year-old cardiologist”. Facts!
On the speculation: “Gerry says bitterly: ‘Yes, yes, I know. Kate killed her in a frenzy, Madeleine was sedated by us, she fell down the stairs – in which case you would have thought they’d have found her body. I’ve heard all of that. There are a huge number of theories in the media. But what I want to know is, who told them all that?’”
DAILY STAR: “Anguished and painfully thin, his wife Kate was too upset to answer even a single question during the interview with glossy US magazine Vanity Fair. Gerry revealed in the 7,500-word magazine article he had to be coaxed by a counsellor into talking publicly about his daughter in the days after she disappeared”
DAILY RECORD: “Maddie’s Dad: Slim Chance Of Getting Her Back”
“Distraught Gerry McCann has admitted the chances of him seeing his missing daughter Madeleine again are ‘slim’”
VANITY FAIR: “Unanswered Prayers”
“After three-year-old Madeleine McCann disappeared on a family vacation in Portugal, her parents pursued a high-stakes strategy: media saturation. It succeeded beyond their wildest imaginings—winning the aid of everyone from J. K. Rowling to the Pope—and failed miserably. Getting the first in-depth interview with Gerry McCann since he and his wife, Kate, were declared suspects, the author re-traces their footsteps to their daughter’s empty bed”
And then a policeman appeared. His name Ricardo. “Because for months they used to have regular weekly meetings with the Portuguese police, and then they stopped,” recalls Gerry’s older sister Trish Cameron
“Do you have something to tell us?” Ricardo asked.
“No,” Kate replied. “Do you have something to tell us?”
“He nodded. “Yes. You are being made arguidos”…
Eight months of talking - read it all…

Ive sat for hours thinking about this,I have many close friends and I couldnt cover/help them,no matter what……..not in a death of a child…
____________
I think we’ve all spent hours wondering what is behind it all. All I can think is that people who are so obsessed (that’s the key word) with being perfect in the eyes of others will do anything to maintain that. To admit a mistake of the magnitude of leaving your child alone for it to die is unbearably bad for the obsessive who can’t admit a mistake. That’s why their excuses always try to gloss over the mistake and they only ever regret not being there at the time she was taken. They don’t regret making a mistake or admit to one/any.

Good point but then if recreational drugs are involved, anything is possible.
How can 2 people earning household income of $240,000 a year be so hard up they need their mortgage paying after 2 months? Clearly there are some strange financial issues behind the scenes.

I think Kate has always been a high maintenance girl, clever in the science subjects which allowed her to qualify, and always considered attractive by those males who fancy the chiselled, stick insect type. Such a person is used to having their own way and being admired.
Gerry seems to be the kind of guy who thinks he can get what he wants, and he was successful in pursuing Kate to NZ. His vanity no doubt allowed him to believe they made the pefect couple, both being ‘professional’. Clearly G is avaricious, ambitious and eager for roecognition, perhaps in a political way or merely wanting a high profile in the public eye.
They required the ‘perfect’ family to complete the ideal image and, it is claimed, Kate alway wanted ‘a big family’. I know several people who have made a similar claim but have had a rude awakening with even the first baby. Such people are so often totally unprepared for how time consuming children can be. Kate no doubt found, even with a lot of help, that it was, and can be, stressful to have three young ones, who probably interferred with her sleep, jogging, gym activities, beauty routines and social life.
If Kate found Madeleine a handful, when the child was probably just high spirited and competing for attention with her twin brother and sister, Kate may have felt a failure, for the first time in her life, because she couldn’t keep control. It couldn’t be her fault, the child must have problems. She would no doubt have resented the freedom G appeared to have when he was able to vanish for three tennis lessons in a day or have a chat with the gymnast. Life can be so unfair!
Kate’s reactions to the whole drama are so untypical that I have wondered whether she is autistic, drugged or drunk. It seems almost unbelievable that she could make such a poor job of even appearing to be upset, distraught or remotely worried about the fate of her daughter. To be able to sleep well, after a day or two, defies belief, not to mention being able to pose with G in so many photo opportunities.
We hear of her being ‘incandescent’ with rage, if accusations are directed towards her, which proves she is capable of some emotion, but certainly not capable of any obvious concern for the fate of Madeleine, when the options are too awful to contemplate.

843 Delboy- Dr Obrien specialises in “acute medecine”. Maybe he was involved in dealing with an “acute”/ life threatening incident involving Madeleine and it all went wrong! Theywere involved in covering it up because it was unethical or possibly because if she had been taken to hospital tests would have revealed the presence of sedatives and the neglect issue would have been brought to light. All speculation of course.IMO
reply….I can fully understand what you are saying, but if o’brien was trying to save maddeleine wouldnt it be easier for him to play the hero bit and tell everyone he tried to save her, rather than cover up???

Like some other posters over here, I really can’t get it either why any of the friends and/or the granny [Dianne Webster] would help them to get rid of the body/do a cover up.
And I can’t understand why, after successfully hiding the body for over 20 days, they’d transport it to another place. And without being caught/seen!

Perhaps they are being bribed financially? I can’t fathom why either!
But as for the body hiding, the leaks coming out of Portugal PJ is that she was hidden on May 2/3 after midnight in another apartment and then …… no more information yet.
Later some other items — perhaps clean up items — where carried away in the hire car which is what caused the DNA transference.

Yes, I do think it is plausible that O’Brien and Tanner have ALLEGEDLY helped to cover up the death of Madeleine and that it is plausible that O’Brien was ALLEGEDLY the person seen/known/described by Tanner to have been moving Madeleine’s body from one of the front doors of apartment 5a or 5b that night.
I believe it is plausible that some or all of “the Doctors” ALLEGEDLY routinely put their kids to bed with sedatives/sleeping pills each night and Madeleine died as a result of that cock-sure solution to the medically-trained friends’ “me/our time” quandry - do we stay in with our howling brats who won’t be asleep till 10.00 or do we knock them out and nip out to the Tapas bar for free wine, a quiz and a bit of ‘adult time’?
Chillingly, I have been told recently that friends of a friend (not doctors) routinely gave their infants sleeping pills to make their trans-Atlantic flights more ‘manageable’ and that on one occasion this summer, the sedated infants have worried their sedators by not waking up, not waking up, not waking up, not waking up and not waking up until their sedators were having to consider owning up to what they had done and taking their infants off to a hospital to be revived. In this last instance the infants woke up and didn’t die and the friends of friends didn’t have to cart their lifeless infant off to an American ER and explain why their child couldn’t be woken. But it is clearly something that ‘hands-off’ parents who holiday without the live-in nanny are prepared to do and therefore I don’t think it can be ruled out as an element in the McCanns’ case. ALLEGEDLY.

seriously does anyone really believe that ..tanner and o’brien really helped cover up a childs death, especially a child they knew,,,the mind boggles,Ive sat for hours thinking about this,I have many close friends and I couldnt cover/help them,no matter what……..not in a death of a child,
what on earth could be more serious than that, to warrant a cover up..drugs no,they are rife everywhere, sex no, jobs no. ex consultants could work in other parts of the world…….not a mccann supporter, so dont get on my case…just dont believe someone would help cover up………not to this extent……
I will go for the gerry rage thing, maybe they had a fall out and she went to murat and gerry found out….and poor madeleine got in the way…… or he lost at tennis…

From ‘Vanity Fair’
“Gerry told how he sank into a depression after his daughter’s disappearance from a resort villa in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on May 3. He said the world then seemed “all black, with maybe tiny points of light”.But the consultant cardiologist said he pulled himself out of the “darkest hours” by throwing himself into the campaign to find his daughter, adding: “Grief washes over you - it’s like a big wave, mostly I was able to beat it back.”
I found that the best way to beat it back was by using my tennis racket. So I played tennis three times a day, just to SMASH that wave. Kate tried it, but could only manage a ‘whoosh, clunk.’ She was naturally disappointed, but I persevered and found tennis gave me the willpower to SET up the fund to SERVE a ‘common purpose.’ I know we have had to face a VOLLEY of abuse about the fund, but I would like to make it perfectly clear that we did not take ADVANTAGE of the NET proceeds in any way. I would also like to emphasise that we did LOVE Madaliene and that in no way is it our FAULT she is missing. One day, the faceless abductor will get COURT. The PJ are merely playing the blame GAME and say it was Kate and me what did it, but they can’t deDEUCE anything and are no MATCH for Clarence and Metodo3. So, to all those people who think we were in some way involved in Maddie’s disappearance, I would just like to say ‘BALLS’ to the lot of you. To those who have been conned and think we are innocent; please keep sending in the PRIZE MONEY.
