REPLY: Understand your point fully, but at the same time, to make any re-interview with a witness really effective, you need all the evidence you can muster, you need to prepare for it well, and you can’t just go interviewing witnesses and suspects when you feel like it. Things like DNA evidence and the other forensic evidence in a potential murder case take a great deal of time to build up, there will then be meetings to discuss and evaluate it, expert opinion may have to be taken and so on.
Stuart Lubbock died on 31 March 2001. Witnesses were interviewed over the next few months, and three people were arrested and interviewed under caution in August 2001.
There were then no more interviews under caution until the sensational arrest of Michael Barrymore on suspicion of murder in June last year (2007) - along with two others.
That was only possible because the police began to follow new lines of enquiry.
It could well be the same in this case. New evidence may turn up years ahead which means that it then becomes possible to re-interview and charge people.
Most of those (not you) who say ‘the police should have charged them by now’ are McCann supporters just trying to make the PJ look inefficient or incompetent.
I hope the PJ will prove to have been competent
