Believe it or not, I’m not so “shocked” by the Huntley and Shipman cases, because they kept it quiet, therefore, it was more like a criminal would do. But in the case of the McCanns, if they are guilty of more than neglect, then the fact that they have drawn so much attention to them is what puzzles me.

They thought the creation of a Media Circus would draw attention
away from them personally….and focused on Madeleine.
However the monster they created gets ever more hungry…and

I suspect accidental too, but an accident is the result of the neglect - and if it was an accident, they’d be responsbile for the fraud of the century!
I know its very hard to believe, but there is so much that happens in the world which is hard to believe - who’d have believed the Shipman story, or the Soham murders? I find it utterly incredible that anyone could live with such crimes, yet they do!

On the distance thing, its not an ‘unhuman’ thing to do, to try to reduce the appearence of neglectful beahviour. As you know, this is my real issue with the McCanns! If not a lie (its only a word!) its certainly a candidate for the accusation of being a bending of the truth for PR purposes! We’ll have to agree to disagree on that one.

Good points, especially the thoughts about sedation being hindsight - though if it were me and they were my kids, it wouldnt have been hindsight but immediate concern. Im not sure Gerry is quite as close to the children as he would have us believe (not an uncommon position for a career minded ’sporting’ type guy - not exactly a ‘modern man’).
Actually, as he would have been wise not to have mentioned this, its a sign that he wasnt being advised very well (and the showing of this later was also a mistake - so the advice is not improved with Clarence!).

The police can go about their business on the assumption that you’re guilty until proven innocent. That is their job.
But by convention one’s personal standing, both in a court of law and in society at large, is surely that you are innocent until proven guilty.
Daisy is right to offer this and shouldn’t be abused for it. For that matte, she shouldn’t be abused even if she is a complete nincompook and is wrong.

I found a nice article on the Mail though:
‘We’ll stop you seeing your twins: Police threat which sparked the McCanns’ flight from Portugal

That has, of course, been revised to no desperate flight, intended all along.
And different stories from the two sides of the family:

But the positive message was a long way from other reports of the McCanns first night back.
Gerry’s mother Eileen McCann described heartbreaking scenes as Kate entered Madeleine’s bedroom for the first time in four months.
Presented with the empty bed, her daughter’s forsaken toys and tiny clothes, she broke down and sobbed inconsolably.’
So we have her uncle saying she’s fine and her mother-in-law helpfully flatly contradicting it with tales of her breaking down.
That was back in September….

Thus far they are saying they are innocent of her ‘total’ disappearance (not counting neglect is why I said total). However, I take note for a very long time now “we would all have a rest…” seems to be an erroneous statement!
