Madeleine McCann: Kate McCann’s Hairdresser, A Suspect Look And Amaral
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
NEWS OF THE WORLD front page: “MADDY’S KIDNAPPER – Beast who took McCann’s little girl”
A “WORLD EXCLUSIVE”
The paper says the witness, Gail Cooper, was staying with her family 600 yards from the McCann’s apartment in Praia da Luz.
She told the police of a “creepy man” in the area. A picture of the man has been produced
Gary Thompson, an associate editor at the News of the World, tells the BBC the picture was being taken seriously. Well, it on the front page. “The picture has been passed to Interpol, police in Portugal and also in Leicestershire, so the important thing is - who is he? Where is he now?” he asks.
“We’ll be urging all our readers in the morning to get in touch with the authorities if they’ve got any information at all about this man”
Is he the man who abducted Madeleine McCann? Or was Mrs Cooper listening to The Beatles at the time?
SUNDAY MIRROR: “THE MAN WHO RAN OFF WITH MADDY?
EXCLUSIVE Hunt for Madeleine: Day 262 First image of suspect”
Or the second image…
“This is the face of a stalker now believed to have snatched Madeleine McCann. The image is a former FBI artist’s impression based on a detailed description given by a key British witness. It clearly reveals the features of a moustachioed man - who was carrying a little girl in pink pyjamas, believed to be four-year-old Maddie”
It’s a photofit, an artist’s impression. Like this FBI picture of Madeleine
The original photofit issued by Portuguese police showed only a round egg-shaped head and blank face and was widely criticised as being useless. The Sun had an eFit. Jane Tanner’s efit had hair and a jacket
The man is “thought to be aged between 38 and 45. He has sallow skin, lank dark hair, large teeth and a distinctive droopy moustache. The suspect, who is said to have spoken in broken English, knocked on the door of Mrs [Sarah] Cooper’s apartment claiming to be collecting for charity. Mrs Cooper says: ‘He made my blood run cold - he gave me the creeps. My judgment is that this man was very suspicious and could have been the kidnapper’”
EXCLUSIVE – Picture of man who gave woman the CREEPS!
“262 DAYS MISSING AND.. MADDY’S BLUNDER COP BACK ON CASE – “Lazy Goncalo Amaral - fired from the investigation after the Sunday Mirror exposed his long, boozy lunches - has held a string of meetings with new chief detective Paulo Rebelo”
The Mirror is on the case. It got Amaral. It got “creepy” Robert Murat. But now Amaral is back. Says the paper: “The move will be a massive blow to parents Kate and Gerry.” It will be “heartbreaking for 39-year-old doctors Kate and Gerry”. Why? Was Amaral the casue of their problem?
DAILY STAR: “SPANISH COPS SHOW UP MADDIE FLAWS”
The Spanish police are looking for Mari Luis Cortes. Says the Star: “Friends of Kate and Gerry McCann say missing Madeleine might have been found by now – if Spanish police had been involved”
Maris Luis Cortes has yet to be found
Says a friend of McCanns of the Portuguese police: “They acted like real amateurs, so it’s no wonder they don’t seem to be getting anywhere finding Madeleine”
The Portuguese police also named the McCanns as suspects
SUNDAY EXPRESS front page: “McCANNS SPLIT BY AGONY OF MADDY”
“The lives of Kate and Gerry McCann are moving in “opposite directions” because they have developed strikingly different ways of coping with the disappearance of their daughter Madeleine”
We are watching the parents
“Kate is living the life of a semi-recluse as she focuses on being a stay-at-home mother, virtually shutting herself off from the supportive community around her. Gerry, meanwhile, has thrown himself into working full time as a heart specialist during the week, while running the campaign to find four-year-old Madeleine in the evenings and at weekends”
And Kate McCann: “Kate has abandoned the village routine she once shared with Madeleine. She no longer has her hair styled at Dawn Newcombe’s salon, which she regularly visited with Madeleine. Her mother normally takes the twins for haircuts when she is staying”
One of the stylists says: “She was almost in tears as she watched them and my heart went out to her.”
Such is the news in the search for Madeleine McCann
SUNDAY INDEPENDENT: “Maddy’s off the front page”
“Followers of the Madeleine McCann story have been able to depend on the ‘Evening Standard’ to clear the front page for any development. So how come a potential breakthrough, with police looking into the disappearance of another little girl near Praia da Luz, was buried on page 17? The answer is: sales fell by 10,000 the last two times Maddy made the cover, so the news desk have been told to curb their Maddy enthusiasm. If only they’d tell the ‘Express’ to do likewise”

Indeed it is!
As Peter O has said, there are many ‘tools’ in the parenting toolbox. Its appropriate use thats the issue.
Anyone who says he is ‘glad’ he can have dinner without the children whilst on a familyt holiday is, in my view, nto a great parent.
However, the key is the freedom with which the McCanns chose to discuss their child minding methods and how public this was BEFORE May 3rd. Laying the ground perhaps?

But they can’t sue you for saying their are guilty of neglect and failing to meet their duty of care. Its a fact.
Otherwise they have to admit that it couldnt have been an abductor. Its why they accept this position. Rock and hard place, Abduction with neglect ot no abduction with serious questions!

Sledgehammer,
I’m afraid the majority of saddo’s on here tend to believe that anyone who isn’t attacking the McCann’s or believe in innocent until proven guilty MUST agree with the McCann’s neglecting their children and defend what they did.
Unfortunately our fellow posters are incapable of separating the two issues.
Guilty of child neglect - absolutely, throw the book at them.
Guilty of harming Madeleine - erm, who knows so INNOCENT until proven guilty.
January 20th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
‘McCanns: This is the face of the man who snatched Madeleine’
That’s the ‘This is London’ headline on Google news search.
It’s a clear claim that the McCanns have identified someone as a kidnapper.
Where would the libel liability arise on this?

Why do people keep talking about the McCanns as if their guilt is in doubt? Edit…

Probably because, if we are sensible, it avoids some numpty trying to have forums like this closed down for allowing the posting of unsubstantiated claims. Remember, their real purpose is probably not suing individual posters, that just so extremely unlikely, it’s about preventing and/or limiting discussion/debate, in my opinion.
Boring as it may be, in my opinion and allegedly are very pertinent words.

Well, possibly the sheer horror of the face forced her to suppress the memory until reminded by another unfortunate who saw the same face but whose mental wellbeing consists of sterner stuff! Mind you, on the basis it’s taken her eight months to discuss it, perhaps not.
PS For all the watching numpties. Yes I know it has been alleged that this person told the PJ ages ago and the PJ allegedly failed to act upon the information.

Well, according to the Standard:
‘Witness Gail Cooper reported the man to police and gave a statement after she had returned home to Nottinghamshire.’
The Times has her last spotting the man at the beach again on April 22 :
‘She said she called police on May 7 and was interviewed on May 21, but has not been contacted since. ‘
The unfortunate failure to get a sketch drawn would appear to be down to the Nottinghamshire constabulary.
Though no doubt Clarrie would regard that as an unhelpful comment…

I also need a ticket but I can’t do nice.
Doesn’t anyone sponsor unworthy people for things such as this, an Anorak gathering.
Anyway Julie we will be noticeable immediately, both of us will be suntanned, not through lying in the sun but just by always having to go out in it.
Also we will definitely have noticeable accents, no matter how well spoken we are.
I think the Brits will be the most difficult .
Brandon Flours any guesses to colour of hair, lipstick or not, well groomed or sloppy.
Chatelaine - any guesses?
Actually for once my attention has gone off the mcs and onto my fellow posters. Who are these people actually that I have dialogued for many months now. I would not even recognise their voices, only their writing style.
I must say it would be a very interesting gathering. I gather even to make it larger and include Mirror Forum members as well.
Two groups very much sharing the same energy and vitality in finding out the truth.
OK I am off to do job a bobbing. How much do the paid pro’s get paid? Just joking….

Perhaps the way the McCanns responded to Madeleine’s waking at night was not appropriate. We cannot know for sure how they handled it. Did they check on her if she called out in the middle of the night to be sure she was okay? Many parents try to get their children to self-comfort themselves and learn to put themselves back to sleep from a very early age. Some have better luck than others with that.
My oldest child, now in high school, as an infant and toddler, hated to be by himself during the night (and day, too). We found it impossible to force him to stay by himself crying, when he was very young, as some experts suggest to do–let them cry it out, after checking to see that their basic needs are met–as we think love and comfort is a basic need, too. He had spent the first week of his life in intensive care and was only fed through IV for the first four days–a very unnatural and insecure way to start off life. We felt this contributed to his wishes to be close to us once we brought him home. It was years before he regularly slept by himself in his own bed. It was not a situation I preferred, but a good night’s sleep (for everyone) was more important to me than doing things ‘the right way.’
I think the star chart idea on its own is not a bad idea. I think your perception of the McCanns using it is most definitely influenced by what we know of their other parenting shortcomings.
January 20th, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Right good people…..and Sledgehammer,

What a sensible thought (sorry I do not recollect the name of the poster):
Haw dare BBC to broadcast a sketch of a “suspect” released by the suspects?
Why do not BBC show some drawings by Ian Huntley as well ?
- paid for by the taxpayer…

You’re right. Even if Amaral was guilty of any wrong doing before, what does it matter? It doesn’t negate all the good work he did. It’s like pro-McCanns who claim that the evidence was contaminated because people walked into 5A.

I agree with you. What works for one parent might not for another. Even within a family, one technique will not succeed with every child and an assortment of methods should be available to choose from.
Edit…
+++++++++++++
As Ian himself has commented above, it’s all about the “context” in which any reward system is used. Any system/approach is capable of being used in an inappropriate/abusive manner. The real hard part about whatever approach you employ is ensuring that you always frame it in a positive and encouraging way for the child concerned.
