The paper says the witness, Gail Cooper, was staying with her family 600 yards from the McCann’s apartment in Praia da Luz.
She told the police of a “creepy man” in the area. A picture of the man has been produced
Gary Thompson, an associate editor at the News of the World, tells the BBC the picture was being taken seriously. Well, it on the front page. “The picture has been passed to Interpol, police in Portugal and also in Leicestershire, so the important thing is - who is he? Where is he now?” he asks.
“We’ll be urging all our readers in the morning to get in touch with the authorities if they’ve got any information at all about this man”
Is he the man who abducted Madeleine McCann? Or was Mrs Cooper listening to The Beatles at the time?

The original photofit issued by Portuguese police showed only a round egg-shaped head and blank face and was widely criticised as being useless. The Sun had an eFit. Jane Tanner’s efit had hair and a jacket
The man is “thought to be aged between 38 and 45. He has sallow skin, lank dark hair, large teeth and a distinctive droopy moustache. The suspect, who is said to have spoken in broken English, knocked on the door of Mrs [Sarah] Cooper’s apartment claiming to be collecting for charity. Mrs Cooper says: ‘He made my blood run cold - he gave me the creeps. My judgment is that this man was very suspicious and could have been the kidnapper’”

The Spanish police are looking for Mari Luis Cortes. Says the Star: “Friends of Kate and Gerry McCann say missing Madeleine might have been found by now – if Spanish police had been involved”
Maris Luis Cortes has yet to be found
Says a friend of McCanns of the Portuguese police: “They acted like real amateurs, so it’s no wonder they don’t seem to be getting anywhere finding Madeleine”
The Portuguese police also named the McCanns as suspects
SUNDAY EXPRESS front page: “McCANNS SPLIT BY AGONY OF MADDY”
“The lives of Kate and Gerry McCann are moving in “opposite directions” because they have developed strikingly different ways of coping with the disappearance of their daughter Madeleine”
We are watching the parents

Gerry, meanwhile, has thrown himself into working full time as a heart specialist during the week, while running the campaign to find four-year-old Madeleine in the evenings and at weekends”
And Kate McCann: “Kate has abandoned the village routine she once shared with Madeleine. She no longer has her hair styled at Dawn Newcombe’s salon, which she regularly visited with Madeleine. Her mother normally takes the twins for haircuts when she is staying”
One of the stylists says: “She was almost in tears as she watched them and my heart went out to her.”

Facts? Lies? Suspicions? ….. what can we be sure of?
A group of British friends holidayed together in PDL.
The group included 8 very small children.
The adults in the group dined out together every night leaving the children alone in their apartments.
One couple was in possession of a baby monitor.
On the night of May 2nd the MW resort personnel had to search out the parents of one of the children who had been reported as crying for an extended period in their absence.
This child shared a bedroom with her twin siblings, - she in a bed, the twins in cots.
All three children were under 4 years of age.
On the night of May 3rd this same child disappeared while the adults in the group dined together at a tapas bar.
Initially the parents reported that the apartment had been left securely locked but that the shutters had been forced from the outside.
It has been since been confirmed that the police found no signs of forced entry and that the apartment was not securely locked.
The parents of the missing girl were quickly gained support from eminent individuals and a huge publicity campaign to find her was soon underway.
A massive fund was set up to fund the campaign, the money being generously donated by wealthy celebrities and the general public.
A firm of Portuguese private investigators were contracted to look for her.
The parents visited several European countries and met the Pope in their efforts to raise awareness of their missing daughter.
Biological samples taken from the holiday apartment and a car (hired by the parents over a month after the child’s disappearance) are undergoing extensive and prolonged DNA testing in the UK.
The group of British friends have all returned to the UK.
The parents of the missing child have been named as official suspects by the Portuguese police.
A British man, who was staying at his mothers villa close to where the child went missing, has also been named an official suspect.
The child’s name is Madeleine McCann.
She has not yet been found.
Facts? - I think that all the above can safely be viewed as ‘facts’ (but no doubt Sledgehammer will be able to put me right there if I am wrong) in that they can be verified and are not being disputed.
But as to lies and suspicions ….. everyone has their own concerns and ideas, and it is useful to be able to articulate them and discuss them here.

Well, the overall style of a mexican bandit last seen at a cinema near you in 1975 does tend to stretch the credulity somewhat.
And I personally find it difficult to regard walking in the rain as a clear indicator of moral depravity.
And then there’s the claim that Ms Cooper had never seen the Bundleman sketch; just what have Team McCann been doing if a woman who contacted the British police back in May about Madeleine’s disappearance hadn’t ever seen that sketch in all these months?
What happened to the shock and awe publicity campaign?
Admittedly, Clarrie now claims that: ‘A million posters appealing for information in English, Arabic and French about the suspicious character are now being distributed throughout Morocco and the Iberian Peninsula’ but does anyone really believe that?
After all, the Fund is said to be nearly exhausted; where is the money for a million posters coming from?
