“Last night she said there are “strong similarities” between the man she saw and the new sketch.
“Nanny Charlotte Pennington’s description of a person she saw with Mr Murat also matches the man shown in the artist’s impression”

I think the news media are running the McConn story because it fills their pages and sells papers (despite what the London Evening Standard says). It is a bit of a bandwagon thing in that the vocal believers will sling mud at those that do not overtly ’support’ them (except for the Independent of course, the only paper that seems imune to trivia).
Also they are heding their bets. It will prove to be a good story for them no matter what. If NN is found then they will say its all because of the coverage they provided. If the McConns are shown to be Conns then they will have an even bigger story to run and to reflect how they were all taken in. Similar to the Iraq war fiasco, all the papers were gungho at the time but are happy now to bleat how they and the rest of the world were mislead.
Apart from ignoring the circus (as the Independent) it would be an extremely brave editor who published the stories but said they were fabricated. however, I have noticed recently the odd by-line creeping in that does not support the story 100% or casts some slight doubt on the authenticity.
Amongst my friends I dare not raise the issue any more after I tried to cast doubt some months back. I was shouted down as heartless by those who have blind faith, I can’t argue with blind faith so in order to keep some friends I don’t talk about it any more. maybe ‘polite society’ is like this and we no longer talk about it because the choices are so stark?

Not wishing to shoot the messenger… but isn’t that report complete er, well, small round hairy spherical things?
Firstly it repeats some incorrect rubbish about her having seen a man who abducted Madeleine. There’s no evidence that Madeleine was abducted nuch less that beatlemen himself exists.
However, the real “pearl” is that this women is seemingly flying out to Portugal to help police with their inquiries. Has anyone told Mr Rebello that she is inbound?
