Madeleine McCann: Oprah Winfrey, Barbara Walters And Rape
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY EXPRESS: “MADELEINE: £1M WAR FOR MCCANN INTERVIEW”
“AMERICA’S top chat show hosts are locked in a bidding war for an exclusive interview with the parents of Madeleine McCann. Oprah Winfrey and Barbara Walters have each pledged £1million in an attempt to get them in front of the TV cameras, it emerged yesterday”
Winfrey and Walters - the Pope and Queen Mother of Ameican TV chatter…
Do those shows take advertising? They do. What will the ad-breaks induce viewers to buy? What is the point of the interview? The McCanns cannot discuss the case.
Says the McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell: “We are not in the market for selling Kate and Gerry’s story to the highest bidder. And we are not impressed by big names. We talk to media from all over the world”
But money is important. The fighting fun is running low
DAILY MAIL: “Kate and Gerry McCann in £1million deal to tell all to Oprah Winfrey”
“Kate and Gerry McCann are at the centre of a bidding war between Oprah Winfrey and Barbara Walters.
“Both celebrities are desperate to land an exclusive deal for the couple to talk about their missing daughter. If it goes ahead, it will be the largest publicly-known amount ever paid for a broadcast interview”
Says Clarence Mitchell: “We have been approached by representatives for both Oprah and Barbara,” he added. “They want an exclusive interview with Kate and Gerry. We are discussing it but it doesn’t mean we are definitely doing it. Nothing has been agreed”
Why wouldn’t they do it?
PRESS ASSOCIATION: “US chat shows approach McCanns”
“Kate and Gerry McCann have been approached to appear on the Oprah Winfrey show and for an interview with American network ABC, their spokesman has confirmed.
It was reported that the McCanns were at the centre of a bidding war worth £1 million between Winfrey and ABC star Barbara Walters who both want an exclusive interview with the couple.
THE SUN: “Maddie sketch farmer raped girl”
“The gun-toting pig farmer quizzed in the Maddie McCann hunt was once jailed for raping a British teenager — in Praia da Luz. Joaquim Jose Marques, 31, who bears a resemblance to the sketch of a mystery suspect, served five years. Portuguese cops who grilled him twice at his ramshackle farmhouse nearby are now convinced he is NOT the man in the drawing”
NOT the man. So why is he in the papers?
“But we can reveal Marques and a pal carried out a brutal attack on two British girls, aged 17 and 18, after prowling the beach in July 1995 at the resort where Maddie vanished”
A heinous crime for which he was punished. But what has it to do with Madeleine McCann?
DAILY STAR: “MADDIE WEIRDO RAPED TEEN BRIT”
“The gun-toting Portuguese pig farmer quizzed over Madeleine McCann’s disappearance raped a British teenager yards from where the four-year-old vanished. Joaquim Jose Marques put his 18-year-old victim through a horrific late-night sex ordeal while an accomplice targeted her pal”
Eighteen..
“Now locals fear he is the same man pictured on a ‘wanted’ poster issued by the McCanns as they step up the hunt for their daughter”
Local residents, or local reporters? And is “fear” really “hope”?
DAILY MIRROR: “Madeleine McCann suspect spotted ’spying on little boys’”
“Five women holidaymakers - three British and two German - have seen the “strange and disturbed” man in Altura, close to the Portuguese-Spanish border, in the past two weeks. One of the British witnesses noticed him on the beach on January 21 bending down to talk to the boys, aged about four or five.
“Clearly worried, one of the youngsters started shaking his head mid-conversation. Then a woman ran out of a nearby villa, shouting in alarm. She scooped the children up and hurried them away.”
Adults. children. Run, children, run!
DAILY TELEGRAPH (Aus): “Oprah’s $2m bid for Maddie chat”
“Mr Mitchell said the McCanns would only agree to a deal which would widen the search for their daughter. The couple, both doctors, also want to campaign for a better Europe-wide alert system for missing children, based on an American model”
A campaign

The Portuguese authorities will bring charges if and when it suits them.
The many many people in the media to which you refer are presumably the same bunch who thus far haven’t had the moral backbone to unreservedly criticise the McCann’s for their own inability to accept that they are at best directly responsible for Madeleine’s disappearance?

‘If they had then surely they would have left it all low-key, crept home and let the generally inexperience local police deal with it. Easy to get away with.’
—————————————————————
This is a variation on Cheryl’s theme last night, though Cheryl provided rather more explanation than coolandcalm.
Interesting, however that CAC now claims that the local police were generally inexperienced.
It would be nice to have some support for that claim; the local police appear to have been experienced enough to gather the evidence to convict the pig farmer and his fellow rapist, and to have checked him out back in May as part of a programme of checking all potential suspects.
Perhaps the pig farmer thought it would be easy to get away with rape, as well.
Or were the McCanns under the impression that they were safer in Portugal, a very child centred country where people would assume, at least initially, that loving parents would never have exposed their children to danger?
In England the assumption of the police would have been the reverse…

This is probably the reason the haven’t been any “sightings” in Portugal.
Clarence Columbo’s plan seems to all go up in smoke because the article in Correiro da Manha.
They were not supposed to know about the real George Harrison that came to Coopers door.

However, that still does not alter the probability that the McCann’s, and/or their friends and possibly by now some of the their family, know rather more about the events leading up to and following Madeleine’s disappearance than has currently come to light, in my opinion.
—————————
Well lets go with that one then…….. so what do you think it could possibly be?
++++++++++++
It would be completely unsubstantiated speculation if I responded to that question in detail, and you know it. There are an extensive list of possible scenarios that have been discussed in here, a lot of which may be feasible. However, only the PJ really know where any evidence may point. Notwithstanding that, I still am of the opinion that the McCann’s do know a lot more about events than has yet come to light.
January 26th, 2008 at 11:53 am
Blimey Carmen… that was a bit OTT!
I have said categorically from day one that I have no interest in mr and mrs mcCann. If I met them I doubt I would like them… not my sort of people at all, and I’ve also always said I agree that they should never have left the children.
However, that doesn’t mean that they had anything to do with Madeleine’s disappearance and I don’t think they did. If they had then surely they would have left it all low-key, crept home and let the generally inexperience local police deal with it. Easy to get away with.
So, again to my mind, the broo ha ha they themselves made is not logical. The being so high profile is not logical… the fact of a large group of people ALL keeping silent is not logical, nothing is logical to me except my old favourite… spotted, stalked, snatched.
Yes, that would still be their fault, yes they would be basically responsible for whatever happened to her, but I don’t think they actaully did anything to her other than place her in danger. If they were proved guilty I would be surprised but also pleased that they had been brought to justice. I just wish the PJ would get on with it. If they are NOT guilty then a lot of time has been lost in searching for a small child, or a small child’s body that deserves a decent burial
IMO of course!!! But I know many many people in the media who share that opinion. Right or not.

Actually I dont know if they are guilty of anything beyond being neglectful of their children and trying to hide that.
But once someone tells a lie, their integrity is damaged - if they tell a lie in these circumstances, its enormity is magnified proportionately and the damage to their integrity follows along.
‘Methinks do protest too much’
When someone pointedly and repeatedly tells me to look ‘elsewhere’ I can’t help but look the opposite direction - its in my nature! I havent had a particularly soft life (nothing too bad, I hasten to add, but not always a bundle of fun) and have experienced human nature at its worst (and its best!). As a result I can be a little suspicious of people, especially when they are in their professional roles, where common humanity sometimes gets taken off at the door of the office, so to speak!
I dont trust them, though I have never met them, because they have not admitted the basic error - if it were me and I were the type of person who ‘campaigns’ rather than searches for my missing child, then I would at least be launching a parental responsibility awareness campaign - you know, for gods sake dont do what I did!
We will never agree on this, but if I were the police, I’d pursue the lie first. I think the Portuguese have done a splendid job against all the odds.
After all, our police and the Home Office dont seem to be doing a lot in this case do they - neither are they doing very well in controlling UK crime or immigration or data protection or ……its a bloody long list.
I’d not blame the portuguese if they shelved the case leaving the McCanns as suspects for life.

Ian Says:
To me, the main point here is that Clarence responded too quickly, he should have let the witnesses speak.
****************
I agree completely. Clarence betrayed his agenda by instantly denying that the pig farmer was the man. Not only is that an affront to the police, it makes no sense from other angles, as you point out.
But I was yet again startled to see the British press providing spin that supports Clarence. For example the claim (quoted in Anorak above) that PJ have said that the pig farmer was “NOT” the man in the sketch. In truth, the PJ said he IS the man Cooper met!
Who the hell knows who the man in the sketch is! If you define him as the “abductor”, then yes, the police have said the pig farmer is not the abuctor. This kind of spin is a mixture of sleaze and subtlety. It is a clever kind of apparent sloppiness that is actually very contrived. I find it very unsettling. It is a sure sign of a fairly deep and wide conspiracy, IMO.

Best wishes for your recovery.
I love doctors. Father, brother, and sister-in-law all in the trade. Particularly love the language.
Idiopathic = we don’t know what caused it
Iatrogenic = we admit we caused it
You go in with a black eye and your GP inspects it and he gives his considered diagnosis of a “traumatic periorbital haematoma”.
“What does that mean, Doctor ?”
“It means you’ve got a black eye.”

I agree. But the answers to the conspiracy theory IMO do not all lie in the M case. Only the study of mass psychology can yield the answers you crave.
January 26th, 2008 at 11:42 am
Saturn - I missed the fact that the pig farmer agreed that it was him who approached GC - thanks for that - do you have a link? please
January 26th, 2008 at 11:39 am
Ian. I think you’ve hit nail on head there. Clarrie’s current tactic is to set up the impression of a parallel police investigation. Whilst the PJ “waste their time” on the McCanns, the noble Clarence becomes the police chief of the ‘real’ investigation - looking for the abductor. He has his private police force in Metodo 3, they have witnesses, and now FBI sketches. It’s a desperate ploy, especially as every person they stumble across has already been investigated and ruled out.
It’s hard to know what they hope to achieve. The PJ will ultimately arrest the McCanns if they find enough evidence to bring it to court, and the millions donated will have been utterly wasted.
January 26th, 2008 at 11:39 am

The pig farmer told the police that he was the one who rang the doorbell at Gail Cooper’s villa. His story matched Cooper’s , and this is the only way the police could have confirmed definitely that it was him. They had confirmed this last May, but did so again recently and announced it. For Clarence to insist that this is not the man who was at Cooper’s door, is for him to declare the PJ liars or utterly incompetent. This is absolute logic and fact. imho
Next point, I think the high-power extradition-expert lawyers hired by Team McCann have been used not so much to prevent the McCanns’ extradition, but as to prevent Team McCann members’ extradition. That is why Clarence and Metodo3/Marcos have felt free to cross the line over into “obstruction of justice” — it has been researched and they know they cannot be charged as long as they stay out of Portugal. This part is my guess only though, as I do not know the law. Correct me if I am wrong, please.
