Madeleine McCann: Oprah Winfrey, Barbara Walters And Rape
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY EXPRESS: “MADELEINE: £1M WAR FOR MCCANN INTERVIEW”
“AMERICA’S top chat show hosts are locked in a bidding war for an exclusive interview with the parents of Madeleine McCann. Oprah Winfrey and Barbara Walters have each pledged £1million in an attempt to get them in front of the TV cameras, it emerged yesterday”
Winfrey and Walters - the Pope and Queen Mother of Ameican TV chatter…
Do those shows take advertising? They do. What will the ad-breaks induce viewers to buy? What is the point of the interview? The McCanns cannot discuss the case.
Says the McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell: “We are not in the market for selling Kate and Gerry’s story to the highest bidder. And we are not impressed by big names. We talk to media from all over the world”
But money is important. The fighting fun is running low
DAILY MAIL: “Kate and Gerry McCann in £1million deal to tell all to Oprah Winfrey”
“Kate and Gerry McCann are at the centre of a bidding war between Oprah Winfrey and Barbara Walters.
“Both celebrities are desperate to land an exclusive deal for the couple to talk about their missing daughter. If it goes ahead, it will be the largest publicly-known amount ever paid for a broadcast interview”
Says Clarence Mitchell: “We have been approached by representatives for both Oprah and Barbara,” he added. “They want an exclusive interview with Kate and Gerry. We are discussing it but it doesn’t mean we are definitely doing it. Nothing has been agreed”
Why wouldn’t they do it?
PRESS ASSOCIATION: “US chat shows approach McCanns”
“Kate and Gerry McCann have been approached to appear on the Oprah Winfrey show and for an interview with American network ABC, their spokesman has confirmed.
It was reported that the McCanns were at the centre of a bidding war worth £1 million between Winfrey and ABC star Barbara Walters who both want an exclusive interview with the couple.
THE SUN: “Maddie sketch farmer raped girl”
“The gun-toting pig farmer quizzed in the Maddie McCann hunt was once jailed for raping a British teenager — in Praia da Luz. Joaquim Jose Marques, 31, who bears a resemblance to the sketch of a mystery suspect, served five years. Portuguese cops who grilled him twice at his ramshackle farmhouse nearby are now convinced he is NOT the man in the drawing”
NOT the man. So why is he in the papers?
“But we can reveal Marques and a pal carried out a brutal attack on two British girls, aged 17 and 18, after prowling the beach in July 1995 at the resort where Maddie vanished”
A heinous crime for which he was punished. But what has it to do with Madeleine McCann?
DAILY STAR: “MADDIE WEIRDO RAPED TEEN BRIT”
“The gun-toting Portuguese pig farmer quizzed over Madeleine McCann’s disappearance raped a British teenager yards from where the four-year-old vanished. Joaquim Jose Marques put his 18-year-old victim through a horrific late-night sex ordeal while an accomplice targeted her pal”
Eighteen..
“Now locals fear he is the same man pictured on a ‘wanted’ poster issued by the McCanns as they step up the hunt for their daughter”
Local residents, or local reporters? And is “fear” really “hope”?
DAILY MIRROR: “Madeleine McCann suspect spotted ’spying on little boys’”
“Five women holidaymakers - three British and two German - have seen the “strange and disturbed” man in Altura, close to the Portuguese-Spanish border, in the past two weeks. One of the British witnesses noticed him on the beach on January 21 bending down to talk to the boys, aged about four or five.
“Clearly worried, one of the youngsters started shaking his head mid-conversation. Then a woman ran out of a nearby villa, shouting in alarm. She scooped the children up and hurried them away.”
Adults. children. Run, children, run!
DAILY TELEGRAPH (Aus): “Oprah’s $2m bid for Maddie chat”
“Mr Mitchell said the McCanns would only agree to a deal which would widen the search for their daughter. The couple, both doctors, also want to campaign for a better Europe-wide alert system for missing children, based on an American model”
A campaign

I don’t believe either in a conspiracy. From the start, the little girl’s disappearance shocked everybody, and everybody wanted to help.
The media, called by the family, made a big story out of it, earned a lot of money because of it, and managed to bring more and more new episodes to the suspensefull story, with the help of the public who consumed that TV reality show greedily (me included).
***************
I can understand this way of thinking, but I see it differently. Mainly because I don’t think it is a case of “The media, called by the family, made a big story out of it…” The person who contacted the media was Jill Renwick, who was said to be on holiday with the McCanns. The publicity schemes, and plans to make money emerged from the PR expert Mr Woolfall, called in by the Mark Warner resort.
The McCanns did not create the “circus”. All they did was to neglect and abuse their children, so that one of them was killed. Immediately after this, there were others willing to step in and “make a big story out of it”. Of course , once the circus was created, the McCanns were willing to be clowns jumping through hoops, and sadistic lion tamers whipping their critics. They will probably eventually claim that a circus magician made Madeleine disappear.

Carrying on from your very well put post regarding the media, etc in this case (with which I agree 100 %).
I have in the past referred to the ever-growing media interest (and I believe it is STILL growing) in this case as starting as a little lapping wave at the sea-shore, developing into a wave that will knock you over, then into a wave that you can surf on …….. and eventually turning into a tsunami - it cannot be stopped once it’s started!
Another thing that springs to mind is a dung beetle rolling a ball of shit, it just gets bigger and bigger until eventually it is bigger than the beetle itself! Only problem here, is I fear that the ball of shit is going to explode in the faces of those who started it! IMHO

Chenier… there is a big difference between the local police in PDL and the big guns from Lisbon.
Bit like Mr Plod from a small village in (say) Cornwall and the Met. the word ‘inexperienced’ was NOT used as an insult.
—————————————-
Since you claim that the local police in PDL were dealing with it, am I to assume that your knowledge of Portugal is limited to a very short period of television viewing?
The PJ were not based in PDL.
The PJ were based in the regional headquarters.
That point has been made clear at considerable length throughout the investigation.
Specialist officers from Lisbon were also dispatched to PDL at the outset of the enquiry.
You claim to have expertise about the investigation, and yet you make statements which are easily refutable.
Over and over and over again…

That would be damning (regarding her reliability) as she has since said she doesnt think it was this man!

Bishop Brennan Says:
It’s hard to know what they hope to achieve. The PJ will ultimately arrest the McCanns if they find enough evidence to bring it to court, and the millions donated will have been utterly wasted.
***********
Hard? Damn near impossible. Even to know who “they” are exactly! At least we can feel good knowing something, even if it is only that the people who donated money were swindled. We don’t even need an arrest to know this much. I’d like to know how much more we can expect to know…

137 Man on a Hill
I don’t believe either in a conspiracy. From the start, the little girl’s disappearance shocked everybody, and everybody wanted to help.
The media, called by the family, made a big story out of it, earned a lot of money because of it, and managed to bring more and more new episodes to the suspensefull story, with the help of the public who consumed that TV reality show greedily (me included). The media (some media to be honest) were very clever in creating two camps from early on : the pros and the antis. It ensured that we would all get emotionnally involved, and having taken a stance, would fight for it.
Now what was, and still is, a tragedy has turned into a comedy, a joke, a circus - whatever the conclusion will be. If the parents are really fighting for their daughter, they haven’t been successfull. If they are fighting to prove their innocence, they are creating more and more doubts about their good faith, with what seems to be the help of their PR machine.
We are left with very important questions, as how do we wish to bring up our children, how do we care for them, what attention to their real needs we are ready to give them. Questions about how far we are going to help the media go in their inaccuracy, disrespect of the readers, and marketing approach to information. Questions about justice, its indepedendance from the media pressure and establishment pressure. Etc…
As regard that aspect at least, the little girl’s suffering will maybe have served to make us more responsible, if we all agree not to play the role of a stupid audience but of grown ups, eager to understand the facts, and to fight for more justice, more safety for our children.
I like the silence of the PJ. I support them, as well as the British police whom I trust to do their job with integrity.

Its the publicity they went for which also brings with it responsibility - also suspicion.
Please do not underestimate the career impact in the NHS and the medical profession that leaving your child alone to be ‘abducted’ or more likely to have accidents would have.
Regarding suspcion, the most suspicious (to me) incidnet was the payment of mortgage from the fund. Why would they need to do that?
Many years ago I found myslef embroiled in a national industrial dispute. We (many thousands) were suspended without pay for refusing to work overtime to cover strikers. I went along to discuss the situation with my lender of the time. They agreed to suspend payments for an undefined period, to be reviewed each month.
Why didnt the McCanns do that or something similar? But, more interestingly, why would a well palce consultant be that short of cash?
All these things and many more feed suspicions, they are bound to.
My advice to them would be, come clean, ditch Clarence, speak the truth, face the consequences. Did you really check the kids as regularly as you say?
Oh, and lets see all the holiday photos - there surely must be more than we have been shown.

qq chose! = something
January 26th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
coolandcalm - you make a good point about the media circus that they have created - logic says that if i found myself in this situation I would let it all die down. - here comes the but..
But what if - when they initially shouted ‘abduction’ (say for example to cover for some ‘incident’ that may be damaging to themselves) they never expected any media coverage. Then their friends/ family sitting at home in the uk, feeling helpless, involved the media to a wider extent perhaps than would normally happen in a case such as this?
On day 1 the media came out in force and G & K - tried to play it down. Meanwhile, well meaning friends & family are getting out their phone books and contacting anyone with connections, pushing this horific story of a little girl being taken from her bed.
Realising that they had lots of media interest in the case, they can not logically turn down the help and advice provided by the Uk government without appearing ‘guilty’ - so they arrange a spokesperson and hope that it all goes away.
Within a week someone from home has suggested a website - and started the ball rolling to develope it, and someone else has suggested the idea of a fund and contacted a company to protect its copyright. Can they pull out at this point? It would look very strange if they turned round and said - well thanks but no thanks, wouldn’t it?
And so the ball continues to roll - and G’s reality becomes a place where they are actually victims.
Later it seems that G starts to like the media attention, and begins to play to the audience - through his blog/ interveiws/ trips etc etc. Kate is still uncomfortable about it all but, as usual goes along with Gerry.
So my point is this. If they did not start the media circus themselves - at what point (before G started liking the fame) could they have ‘retired’ from it without it looking suspicious to their friends/ family etc?
January 26th, 2008 at 12:18 pm
Method 3 is sensible TO FACE THE WORLD seek to be paid for Maddie. But they did not another activity, such as “bank or savings account? In these 70000 euros in M3, paid too much, there would not be much use in ‘investment’ by officials of the Fund into an account (which earns interest), and that they could recover for PAY MORE DISCRETEMENT support of a different kind? I find it difficult to believe that they are helped as much as ordinary citizens, or else the government hides qq chose!
I am void in this area, but in this case the ‘marketing’, the worst shameful thoughts pass through me to try to explain that it is not possible that McCann and spend that M3 pocketing it for ALL THERE!
Mr. Levy, help .Thank you for your courage, we expect the truth and justice for Maddie, for all those who love him for all donors …
What a relief when the parents are innocent, but if they are only friends of the Group who are in the picture, why parents constantly reaffirm their full confidence in them, and continue to look elsewhere?
It seems to me that if a body out, I would have proposed a donation to the PJ even if not intended, I insisted my daughter disappeared, McCann did, I hope!
As for our comments monitored, the height is that we all can be found in prison, EXCEPT CONVICTED! LOL LOL

Edit….
IMO of course!!! But I know many many people in the media who share that opinion. Right or not.
++++++++++++
The Portuguese authorities will bring charges if and when it suits them.
The many many people in the media to which you refer are presumably the same bunch who thus far haven’t had the moral backbone to unreservedly criticise the McCann’s for their own inability to accept that they are at best directly responsible for Madeleine’s disappearance?
—————————————————
Er, yes.
So far the reservations expressed have come from people like David Brown who appear to have reached the point of no return having sweltered through the long hot summer.
But it is notable that CAC simply claims that lots of unidentified people agree with her…
